Lagging internet

Hey everyone, I've got this weird problem that has cropped up in the last 2-3 days. First of all, Safari started laggin, not being able to connect, having to refresh etc. Then it continued yesterday with when I tried replying to facebook message, I would be typing and then all of the sudden the spinning beach ball would show up, then it would catch up maybe 30 seconds later, then be normal, and act up... rinse repeat. Now it's also including any internet connection. I'll be playing minecraft and I'll be able to play for a few minutes online smooth, then all of the sudden, online game play stops (blocks don't drop, no AI interacts, etc.) then it catches up instantly and half the time drops me, just like the facebook message. I just updated to 10.8.2 tonight, but problems persist. Any ideas or anyone else experiencing this? Different software (Safari & Minecraft), and different internet connection (home & work) tell me it's software/hardware related to the Mac. Not sure if it might be the issue, but I got a base 2012 13" MBP, 4gb ram, and replaced HDD w/ Vertex 4 SSD, no trim.

Wow, I didn't know about that tool. Looks like the GUI hasn't changed from the OS9 days. Anyways, not a thing in the quick or extended tests. I just don't get it. I know if I bring it in to the Apple store it'll just be a waste of time since it's intermitent. Hate to reformat and reinstall but I might have to. Was also thinking it might be fixed in an update. Safari 6 has been a disaster for me. New tabs constantly crash the browser. I originally thought it was just the browser, because I don't experience it in other browsers to extent that Safari does it, but it's still there. Also it happens in any games I play.

  • My Lagging internet.

ok this is my first time with just about everything that has to do with apple discussions, so be easy, your dealing with a virgin...I have a MacBook running on the newest OS. I have a time capsule.
My problem is that time to time my wifi will simple suck. It begins to load and the blue status bar stops right about the end of the "http://w..." I have ruled out all the obvious problems that could be to blame, because my gf's pc will always runs perfectly. So it has to be MY MacBook or some settings i have. The only relief i can get is when i reset my TC and create a new network. Just want to know if there is anyone who has the quick fix for this or if its a common problem or if i'm crazy.
Thanks and feel free to advise me with any apple discussions etiquette.

Hi Mike, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.
    https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/device/apple-osx-tiger
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.251.200.70 behind the scenes.
How much Free space do you have on your Hard Drive also?
If that doesn't help, get back.

  • Premiere Elements 12.1 Constantly Connecting To The Internet When Running

    Hi there!
I have an issue with Premiere Elements 12.1 constantly connecting to the Internet when running... it looks like it is either trying to connect to something or downloading something.
Premiere runs OK, but it is very slow: this is due to it trying to connect. (We've proved this by running the program without the Internet disabled... it sits at about 13,000K in memory... and works fine).
Anybody got any idea why it is connecting to the Internet in the first place and how we can stop it doing it.
We believe this issue started when we updated to v 12.1... but can't be sure!
We have tried uninstalling and re-installing it... same problem. We're virus checked till all night... nothing found (no root kits, nothing etc.)
We're running Win XP Service Pack 3, 32 bit... I know 'Windows XP is old etc. etc. etc.'. Yet it still works great and is nice and fast for us here.
    Any advice/suggestions greatly received!
    Thanks in advance,
    GRBaker

    Hi Steve,
Thanks a bunch for the post... we're certainly experiencing no other issues besides the 'downloading' issue on Premiere... various virus/spyware etc. scans have revealed nothing. There's nothing odd in the Startup or process list...
PC operates entirely as normal... no unusual performance lags/Internet disconnections etc. No issues with other software, so far, after installing Elements.
So we're currently leaving the program on to 'download' (or whatever it is doing), so it could be that it will eventually stop constantly accessing the Internet.
We are already in contact with Adobe and they are keeping pretty tight-lipped about what it might be doing... saying (so far) only that Photoshop Elements/Premiere 12 does connect to CloudFront to 'download fonts'... (they were also basically indicating they thought it was our PC/a faulty install until we mentioned we knew it was CloudFront it was trying to connect to...)
...if the applications need to download stuff, then all Adobe has to say is 'it's perfectly normal, just wait for it to complete' then we would not be worried! All it needs is a simple notice to say that 'some additional downloads are required': give us a progress bar or something... no problem!
I can't think why else it would be connecting to the Internet???? (Well, a couple do come to mind..!)
We did pay for the download version of the software (we don't have physical installation DVDs) from one of Adobe's Registered resellers, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I suspect you are 100% correct and that it isn't in fact a bug, bit simply some additional data/content that needs to download etc. If this is the case, then maybe it is related to our broadband speed (which can variable as we live in a rural location).
As you say, if it was a bug everybody would have it! There is that thread I mentioned above, but that's for a previous version of elements I think... to me, as the user experiencing the issue, it definitely looks like a bug as it's rendering the software unstable!
Most likely it's just our bad luck and there's something specific to my installation that's tripping the software and causing the issue. I suppose it depends how you define 'bug'... if it's a normal operation of the software that just happens to disagreeing with my system... than Adobe would say 'that's not a bug'... but I would say 'it's a bug as it causes this problem'. It simply a question of perspective!
Anyway, it's mystifying to me: the software runs GREAT, when it's not trying to access the Internet. It's weird. You certainly can't complain, for price, it really is excellent software!
    Cheers,
    GRB

  • Can i run any diagnostic test on AEx 2nd gen?

For some months my airport express is giving me a lot of connectivity problems. i get the wan ip from my isp but the internet seems to keep on dropping. my isp has checked the connection from their side and so has my cable operator. they have checked the cables several times, and also the switch they have installed in my building. they have even changed my cable's port on the switch. everyone else seems to have no problems with the connection in my building. its only me.
i believe there is some issue with the firmware 7.6.4 and 7.6.3. i have downgraded to 7.6.2 now to see if that works.
can someone confirm if there is any issue of lagging internet or freezing aex 2nd gen on these firmwares.
is there a way to run a diagnostic test on this router?

  • IOS 8, how to rip it apart, anyone? Please?

How do I get rid of this piece of trash update? Not trying to offend whoever created IOS 8, but it is a piece of trash, i hate it, and its causing my iPad to no longer function properly, such as type lag, app lag, Internet lag( my wifi is good), freezing of apps, and apps shutting down. I just want to take my iPad mini, and throw it away, and never look at it again, but then I remember I bought it, and I don't like throwing away money.

  • Netzwerkanschlüsse TC/AE warum gehen die nicht?

    Hallo,
    Danke..

Sometimes things get lost or garbled in translation, so let me be sure I understand correctly:
    1) You have a Time Capsule. An Ethernet cable connects to the WAN port of the Time Capsule. This is how the Time Capsule gets its internet connection.
    2) If you connect one computer to a LAN port of the Time Capsule, then the computer will be able to access the internet.
    3) If you connect other computers to the other LAN ports of the Time Capsule, only one computer will be able to access the internet.
    4) You know that the hardware is working correctly. A green light appears in each connected Ethernet port.

  • Strange system lag & network/Internet

I couldn't find a post about this being asked, I might be wrong. I apologize for asking this again but I don't know how to seach to explan this problem..
I am not sure if it's becasue I am using Mavericks because I rarely noticed this issue before but I realized two problems with my Macbook Air when running:
    1) If the Wifi is connected to one that's not really "connected", (for example a nearby network or one that it cannot connect to), the MacBook SLOWS down like crazy. I'm not talking about the Internet speed, but I'm talking about the system. Anything from opening files to programs would lag extremely like something is eating the system resources. If I disconnect from that network (the one that doesn't really connect), all together, the computer is fine again.
    2) When I'm uploading something like onto Dropbox or photos onto eBay, the system also slows down like crazy. Again, I'm not talking about the Internet speed, but the system itself would slow down. For example, if I move my cursor, it would delay or would just slide really quickly and go out of control when I make movements.
Is there a solution to this problem or something I could disable?
    I am running OS X 10.9 with a 1.8 ghz i5 processor and 8GB ram.
    Thanks a bunch!

    Ok - long-shot here...
I recently started having problems with my macbook pro dropping internet (connected via Airport to TC). My iMac (also connected via airport to TC) had no issues.
I run 2 wifi networks using TC, a 'full-up' network and a guest (internet only) network. So I tried switching to the internet only network - hey presto! no probs...
So what is different between the 2 networks - well, I had started messing about with Back to Mac and remote login/file sharing between the laptop and imac. Although I had given up trying to make it all work, it was clearly trying to establish connectivity in the background, thus presumably interfering with the connection for internet that I was using actively on the laptop.
After turning all file/screen sharing and back to mac off the problem was resolved. Luckily I am still able to access my TC as network storage between both my imac and laptop and I have moved back to my 'full up' wifi network......touch wood, problem resolved.

  • When i play a game or video my mac lags, and m sure its not the internet,

First, when i play a game(like wow and wot stuff) my computer lags, but the ping is fine( like 120ish) and the fps is fine too( like 100 ish). Also when i watch a video( like on hulu, youtube ect.) its loads slowly, and my internet speed is fine, the download is like 11.5 mbps, and up load is 4 mbps.  My mac is also new, got it like 3 month. i have radeon HE+D 6770M with 1 gb mem, i just want to know whats the problem.

You can't have iOS 7.0.4 connected to a Mac OS X 10.3 system.  Please tell us what web browser you have, go to the web browser's help menu, and select About web browser name.  That may also be in the browser's own menu name.   Once we know the browser, we can help you find the "purge."  Usually the function is known as emptying the browser cache.  Do not attempt to empty system caches.

  • Mac book air connects to internet w/ lag and drops

my macbook air has been working for the past year, but recently my internet has been lagging and disconnecting by itself every 30 seconds. all my computers connect through a router and modem but only the mac air is having internet problems. it keeps saying "the page cannot be displayed" even though airport shows that it is connected to the internet. (note: the mac air works flawlessly when I connect to other wifi locations outside of home)
    router: netgear
    all the things I've tried.
    -editing keychain settings
-deleting my network and creating a new one
    -resetting modem and router
    -resetting airport
    -changing dns and ip settings
    -resetting the mac air
    -turning off bluetooth
    -changing browser settings
    -smashing the router around
    nothing has worked....
p.s. there was one day where I changed my router and it worked for one day, the next day it didn't work again.

What are your wireless encryption settings? WEP, WPA2? Have you tried it with no encryption? Was it faster? Sometimes if you have rearranged the room or moved the router, interference can start. I also would download istumbler and see if you have neighbors using the same or adjacent channels. It will also show you the noise on your Netgear. Maybe this will bring some ideas to you:

  • I play a game called airwings, which is a multiplayer game.  Especially since ios8. Many of the players are experiencing lagging, skipping issues which make playing difficult if not impossible.  These are people with excellent internet connections.

Someone at Apple please explain to us or even explain to the game developer, Brian Greenstone, why especially since ios8 there is terrible lag and skipping in this game making it unplayable for many players. These are often people with lightening fast internet speeds.  We have all tried deleting and reinstalling the game, rebooting routers, resetting network settings, etc.  The developer says he doesn't know why this is happening and he said Apple has no interest in fixing the problem.  He doesn't get "apple love".   .??

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Lots of internet lag with MBP

I have noticed that I'm getting tons of internet lag on my MBP 15". This is using a wireless connection with WEP through a DLink DI-614+ router. What usually happens is that every page I load in Safari will take awhile to get started, then will render itself at a normal pace.
What makes me think this is a Mac problem is that I am having zero problems with my Vista notebook running simultaneously.
What's more I don't remember having this problem upto the beginning of June (I was in a different country between now and then) - so perhaps it is related to an update since then?

Yes, looks like probably the same/similar thing as the above thread issues. In my case I'll mention that it has nothing to do with battery vs AC, and is reproducible every time.
Current solution - switched to boot camp and now working perfectly under XP ... .. hopefully Apple will fix this apparently fairly wide-spread issue soon.
Also on the assumption that it relates to the last update, which I think was not so long ago.. I don't think I can do an archive/install (or something like that..) because I don't have my setup disks in this country, and will have to wait until September to get them.

  • Computer lags while using internet

Recently, my computer has been lagging while I use the internet. It's not a significant lag, but it shouldn't lag at all given the processing speed of the computer. Here are some examples,
-Picture slideshow delays for 2-3 seconds when I click "next"
-Video picture freezes for 2-3 seconds while the audio continues
-As I type right now the cursor will stop for 2-3 seconds and then continue
This started recently. I noticed that Safari has less of an issue than Firefox, but both seem to lag. For a little while, Firefox wouldn't run any videos at all. I ran a virus check and nothing came up.
    Any thoughts?

Will I need to re-install anything if I run repair disk?
Running Repair Disk does not necessitate reinstalling anything. However, it is good practice to maintain an up-to-date backup, especially when you have difficulties which you are not able to identify. Indeed, many of us maintain two or three backups as a regular practice.

  • Extreme internet lag and inability to connect to other macs in network..

    Hi,
    My network is as follows:
Linksys AM300 half-bridge mode to Apple Airport Extreme (latest edition) routing to:
-1 Mac Pro (2008) via ethernet
    -1 iMac (2008) via wireless-n
-1 Mac Mini (2003) via wireless
-1 windows xp laptop via wireless
    -1 MacBook Air via wireless-n
The distance from Mac Pro to the Airport is relatively far but the signal is good and internet exhibits no lag whatsoever.
The MacBook Air is in the same room as the Mac Pro. Since the distance to the Airport only gives a mediocre internet connection I use my Mac Pro's internet sharing to enable its airport as an access point with WEP encryption then connect my MBA to the Mac Pro.
Until a couple of months ago everything was fine but now I suddenly cannot connect to the screensharing or filesharing services of the Mac Pro and the internet connection has become ridiculously slow. I experience a roughly 20 second lag upon EVERY request to any site (google.com for example) and using the terminal i pinged google which yielded an average ~300ms response.
My browser is a Firefox 3.0.6 btw, this is also the browser on the iMac and Mac Pro.
While the lag is annoying even more so is the fact that I cannot use the MBA to 'remote control' the screen of my Mac Pro. The Mac Pro has not had its settings or software changed between working and not responding.
Connecting to the Mac Pro from the MBA via the regular Finder -> Network dialog shows the Mac Pro but then responds with a basic "Connection Failed" message. The same happens when trying to connect to the Mac Pro from the iMac or Mac Mini. I haven't tried the windows laptop so far.
All other computers in the network (other than the MBA) have 'normal' fast internet speeds and no lag.
The lag is also present when sitting next to the Airport Extreme circumventing the internet sharing of the Mac Pro.
I have no clue what is going on and suggestion and help would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much for reading.
    M.

The first thing to do in this sort of situation is to use Network Utility to ping to/from the server and clients to see if they can reach each other. Network Utility will also tell you what IP address the Mac you are running it on has. If you are using a 192.168.x.x style address range as per your message then they should all be in the same block e.g. 192.168.1.x where x is unique per computer.
The next thing may be to look at your DNS settings. You don't say what services you plan to use on the Mac OS X Server, but if your going to use Network Login Accounts and Network Home Directories then having your Mac OS X Server as the (working) DNS server will be very important. This would involve normally telling the DHCP server to advertise the Mac OS X Server as being your internal DNS Server.
