Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

Hello to all.
I'm having similar problems like this one, here using a Dell Vostro 3460, maybe is just some non-windows OS unfriendly hardware. Battery last like 5 or 6 hours on Windows, and just like 2 or 2 and a half on Arch. Will remove battery until there is a solution, and use the laptop only on my workplace.
I have to admit that, I don't know how to disable the discrete video card, I just blacklisted nouveau.
LCD is not hot, there is just constant flow of heat by the ventilation gap (maybe the CPU dissipator?) brightness settings are ok. On windows that heat flow sometimes just stops.
Any help is very appreciated.
Thanks.

@lahwaacz,
Could you point me to documentation regarding bugs/problems with laptop-mode tools? I'm using that right now and it has always worked pretty well but I'm currently seeing higher temperatures (~10C higher on average) and trying to figure out why.
My fan operates continually but not, I think, very aggressively. But it has always done that so I assume it is normal for this laptop. (Have no idea really but it doesn't seem out of the way - it is a laptop, after all...)
I don't know anything about fan control, my laptop controls fan speed automatically, I can't even get current fan speed.
The main problem with laptop-mode-tools is that it's very huge, and the bigger the program is, the slower is the execution. Another problem is that it's connected to both battery and AC adapter ACPI events (see /etc/acpi/events/lm_{ac_adapter,battery}). On my laptop, those events are sent at the same time, resulting in running laptop-mode-tools twice. Most people once configure laptop-mode-tools to their liking and their hardware, so I think there is no need for such an extensive software like laptop-mode-tools, if something simpler does the same (or better) job.
Also laptop-mode-tools can conflict with pm-utils (which are installed on many systems as dependency for some packages):

While on Youtube, my touch screen stopped responding. So, i charged it to full. Then, it still wouldnt work or unlock. So, I restored it. After this, the screen didnt work, and the battery depleats 5X as fast as normal. Hard reseting doesnt work. What happened, what do i do?

You may have some corruption that is now in your backup.  I would restore to factory defaults/new iPod and see if that fixes the problem.  If not I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Is there any app that indicates how each app consumes battery or any way of knowing?

downloaded a lot of apps and I think decreased battery performance, I want to know what to remove to improve

Generally to save battery you can do any of the following:
    Reduce the screen brightness
Turn off bluetooth when not using it
Turn off wifi when not using it
Turn off LTE when not using it (if it's an LTE enabled device)
Close any apps that are running in the background
Disable any use of current location based services
Set fetch notifications to a wider timeframe of manual
All of these actions consume battery life and if they are all enabled it can drain your battery pretty quickly. Hope this helps.

Sounds to me that there is a process stuck and that is what is causing your battery issues. You say that you have restored to factory settings twice in the last 6 weeks. Were those restores from a backup, or a restore as new? If you restored to a backup and the issues are still there, then there is something wrong in your backup. Try restoring the device as new and not add anything to it right away and see if that improves the battery life.
I have a 5S with a push account for work and am dealing with email constantly during the day. I use my phone for upwards of 16-18 hours of the day, including web browsing, iMessages and phone calls. My battery is usually around 65-70 percent at the end of the day, which is only about 2-3% per hour of usage.
The echo deal is a carrier issue, and can depend on towers. I've seen it in the past, but it generally doesn't last long and corrects itself. The voicemail password might require you to contact AT&T to get them to reset your password. If you updated the software on the phone, it can sometimes require that reset. Are you still receiving your voicemail?
The Yahoo thing is Yahoo. I'm certainly glad I don't use if for all the stuff I've read.

  • The battery is consumed too fast

Problems with the battery, is consumed too fast since version 6.1.3 update. How I can fix

The location of the phone is working in the background, so the phone being standby, the battery is drained and heated terribly
    Fix:
Disable the location in the app's in which it has been used the last 24 hours, also on the same screen, at the option system services, disable also the location.
Now, with 12 hours of standby and 3 hours of use, I have 70% battery!!!!.
I pass another link with other solutions, I hope they serve:

  • IPhone 4 battery drains really fast and phone gets really hot

I have an iPhone 4 and since November 15 my battery has been draining really fast and gets really hot when I use the phone. When I try to charge the phone with my computer it doesn't charge, but only charges with the wall hub. I have tried deleting the email accounts, deleting all apps, restoring with the backup, restoring without the backup, and still no luck. I went to the Apple store and they briefly looked at it and said it had water damage by looking at the water damage indicator in the charging port. They told me I needed to pay $150 for a new phone. I don't recall getting my phone getting wet and it seems to work fine except for the battery drain and the computer charging problem. iTunes still recognizes the phone. I thought it was a battery problem so I ordered a new battery and replaced it myself and the battery was still draining fast. When I had the phone open the other water damage indicators were still white (no water damage), it was just the charging port indicator that was red (water damaged). Also, when I charge my phone with the wall hub it charges very slowly. I have ran out of ideas and I could really use some suggestions. Thank you.

i looked on the right there is no solution to my problem.i charge my phone to 100% after 2 hours with no usage at all of the phone with 3G off with wifi off with all applications shut down all notifications and locations off battery goes down to 50% when it was running on the older ios never had this problem in my iphone.when will this problem solved

  • Iphone 4 battery draining fast and yellowish blobs on the screen

So I got my iphone 4 today. 32GB. Came home charged it full powered down for battery memory and left off for a few minutes like instructed.
I have not done much with the phone and I am already at 85% within an hour of using it for texting. maybe 30 texts so far. Wifi off, no tethering connection made, Brightness turned to max push every 15 minutes 3G on. For a battery that is 40%n bigger it is really draining fast.
Now I am noticing yellowish blobs on the right side vertically and a few on the top horizontally. I read in a post that it was because of not cured residue and should go away in a few days. DOES this make sense to you folks. Where does it say that on apples site.
I am about to call a tech about this and have them send me something in writing.
This is just frustrating as I was hoping for a great experience this year. From the let down from the white iphone to my battery being drained to now yellow blobs..man can anything else go wrong.
What say you??????? any of you have battery issues yet

If my past experience with iPhones and iPods is any indication, you'll find that over the next couple days as you use your iPhone the battery indicator will become more accurate. My habit (as I've done with my new iPhone 4) is to use it until the indicator shows red and then charge it fully and then do that twice more. At that point the indicator should be 'calibrated' with the battery and be more accurate. Yesterday I used my phone for about 5 hours before the battery indicator gave me 20% warning. Today I've used it as I normally would in a day and, as I always did with my G3S, I'm currently home from work with a 40% charge showing. Guess I'll have to play a little Angry Birds tonight
I've seen nothing official from Apple about the yellow splotches but I read either at Engadget or Gizmodo this morning that a worker experienced with this process claims it is the bonding adhesive which hasn't finished curing. It has been widely reported second hand. Don't know if contacting AppleCare this early in the game will get you anywhere. Since iPhones are in short supply at this time and you have a year's warranty, I'd wait a couple days and see if the report is correct. If the yellow defect goes away it was true.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

You can call Verizon to replace it or go to an applestore to replace it since it won't even power on with multiple chargers.

  • Consumer/producer fast AI and AO.

I made a routine for fast DAQmx (PXIe-6124) acquisition in two while loop (consumer and producer).
Currently it can be run by pushing run-button.
But, I would like to one more while loop (totally 3) for user-friendly interface and integrating sub-program using event structure.
Among troubles I thought, these three loops can affect the acquisition speed of DAQmx.
For example, if I send a "Acquire" signal to producer and consumer of DAQmx from event loop,
this mean I also have to send "Stop" command.
This requires more functions in every real-time acquisition iteration.
-conditional state loop and cluster bundle of 2D(500*500 DBL array) and variant of command enum or data to control consumer loop in producer of DAQmx.
-conditional state loop for next step and cluster unbundle of data in consumer loop.
    My question is...
Are there some special or rule-of-thumb techniques for continuous, fast and large data DAQmx acquisition in producer and consumer using three while loops?
Instead of this, do I had better use call-by-reference under other main program?
    labmaster.
*)I am sorry I can't post my code because of modifying and hidden subVIs.

You will need some logic in your producer loop to execute the stop command sent by the first while loop but won't need one for the consumer loop since it can stop on error when the producer loop is stopped and the queue you are reading from is destroyed.

Hi, I had my iPhone 4S and I'm recently upgraded it from 7.0.5 to 7.0.6 and I found the battery drain up very fast if compare to iOS 7.0.5. Besides, I also unable to fully charger my phone to 100% now - max is 85% with phone either in airplane mode or switch off totally
May seek help from your advise on above case.
    Thank you
    Best regards,

Try killing the battery (Let it drain---turning on all the settings, playing a video, and having the brightness up kills it faster), then let it fully charge from there. Let me know if that works.
