Layout approaches

I have been attempting to put several objects on a window using various layout managers, but have had little success in what the objects look like visually, especially when the window is resized.
I have an object that, from top-to-bottom, is a JLabel, a JComboBox, a JTable, and another JLabel. This object (called ComboTable) will be on the left upper-most portion of the window.
Another object (RptButtonPanel) contains (again top-to-bottom) 4 JButtons that can be (in this case; it will be associated with other objects later) associated with the ComboTable
On the window, the object immediately to the right of the first ComboTable is a JTabbedPane. The first tab on this tabbed pane contains 2 more ComboTables (each of these with a RptButtonPanel)
The problem I'm having is with using the layout managers, particular how they behave when the windows are resized. I would like the combotables to expand appropriately when the window enlarges, and contract appropriately when the window shrinks. The RptButtonPanels should not resize/reposition. I would prefer that the combotables do not change position (e.g. huddle to the center) when the window resizes. In the case of the objects on the tabbed pane, the tabbed pane should enlarge to hold the 2 ComboTables appropriately, but the ComboTables should hold their position.
The lowest resolution for the users will be 800x600. Do I need to set a minimum size for all of the objects?
I have tried various combinations of BoxLayout, GridBagLayout, and BorderLayout, but each of them have their own issues. The ideas I have tried center around the following:
- ComboTable on a panel #1 using GridBagLayout; RptButtonPanel on a panel #2 using GridBagLayout; placed 2 ComboTables (with RptButtons) on a panel #3 using either BoxLayout (X_AXIS), BorderLayout, or GridBagLayout (whatever worked at the time); placed panel #1 and panel #3 on window using BoxLayout (X_AXIS).
Does anyone have any suggestions on a good approach to doing this? Admittedly, GridBagLayout seems to cause me some trouble, especially when it comes to specifying weightx/weighty and what happens during window resize.
Thanks,
Van Williams

Hi Shiv,
I didn't find any documentation related to this. However i would like to add my understanding
Note: As per the Sizing Guide, MDM Layout server should be installed on the m/c having min of 2GB RAM (4GB Recommended).
1. layout server as a central server with Multiple Publisher clients accessing common server
Advantages
1. Only one layout server needs to be installed and all the Clients i.e. MDM Publisher will access this centralized layout server.
2. It reduces Hardware cost since only one centralized m/c is required.
3. One layout server needs to be managed if any configuration changes are required.
Disadvantages
1. Simultaneous access of this centralized server affects the performance
2. Would be slow as compare to Approach-2 because of delay due to network.
2. layout server on individual clients system
Advantages
1. Better performance as compare to Approach-1 since no n/w connections are involved in communication between the Layout server and MDM Publisher.
2. No extra hardware is required for layout server installation since every individual m/c contains its own layout server.
Disadvantages
1. As per the Note above, individual machines should have min of 2GB RAM just because of Layout Server. Hence if the number of clients increases so does the cost of hardware as well.
2. Difficult to manage as compare to Approach-1 (Ref to Adv-3).
Based on above points, I would recommend the first approach since it is cost effective, easy maintainance. As far as performance goes, n/w speed could be enhanced even at the lower cost as compare to installing multiple layout servers on individual m/cs.

  • How to create 2-page parallel autoconnected flow tags...

FM10 (from TCS3), unstructured. Advanced user.
I want to create a chapter template with two flows that appear on either the left pages (only) or the right pages (only).
Currently, we have a number of conditional text content identifying audience-specific material. I am trying to set up a bilingual template with left pages French and right pages English (20% smaller text frame). We may use a text inset for English, and a text paste for French (to enable some fine-tuning page break adjustments.). At publish time, which will be fairly frequent for multiple reviews, I want to use a build expression in the conditional text to only show the audience-specific content... and, thus, the page range will vary and blank pages need to be removed. Ideally, I'd like to just re-generate the TOC etc., and print.
I tried to do a custom layout by connecting text frames manually, but it is too labor intensive.
I also tried a little trick by setting up L/R default master pages with a very, very small text frame on opposite pages (i.e., so the text flow would "jump" from the tiny text frame over to the correct page), but FrameMaker insists on keeping at least one character in the little text frame. Grrr.
    Looking for something more automatic.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the idea, but no luck.
I tried the graphic on the body page and the master page. I even tried embedding it in a anchored frame (Run into Paragraph and other flavors). The text would either seem to ignore these settings or just move a specified distance away from the graphic (Runaround properties) ... but always remained "linked" to the text box and hovered outside.
The image below shows the small border of the teeny-weeny text box in the upper left corner with some text extending beyond the text frame (the main text frame can just be seen in the lower right).
So far, my workaround involves overrides (ugh) on some paragraph styles to Start at Top of Left Page or Start at Top of Right Page. Not ideal, but works OK for now.
    Back to the grind...
Thanks for the example. Sorry to hear it's still not "fixed" back to earlier behavior. Please file a bug report/feature enhancement request here: Wishform
More thoughts, all untested, until you test:
    * If your formats don't need hyphenation, turn it off for all text formats; perhaps this might fool the system.
    * Try a new layout approach, something like creating the two-page spread as a single page, and using side heading paragraph formats for the left-hand page content, and "in-column" formats for the right-hand content. Apply French and English conditions appropriately, using find/replace. One problem here is that FrameMaker can't have two different page numbers on one page; in this case, it could be useful if your parallel texts are page-numbered identically. For example, page 10 French and page 10 English are both on the same spread, the current page-number system variable on each "page" is what you want. This synchronization might help during reviews. Hide one or the other language condition. Apply a different master page that uses a standard layout. NOTE: Side heading paragraphs don't break across text frame or column boundaries.
    * Find someone who can script connecting left-page text frames.

  • How do I fix my homepage for Internet Explorer use, when using dreamweaver?

    Hi,
I have recently created my first two webpages, and they looked like they were working when I was using Firefox. But when using Internet Explorer one of the pages drop the text down to an area of the screen where it's impossible to read it. Can someone please help me out? I am using Dreamweaver and I'm sure there is a basic problem I've created for myself, but I can't figure out what it is! This is the webpage I'm having problems with: www.haanshuus.no.
Thanks a lot for any help in resolving this problem!

I don't think this has anything to do with the conditional comments.
The problem is with your layout approach.  Trying to precisely fit content over a very large background image never works as planned.  If you increase text size in any browser (Zoom text only, Ctrl+++), your black content spills out of the gray box into the black region below.  Black text on black background becomes invisible.    Your approach works in Print design but fails on the web because web pages need to be flexible.
Remove your Body background image and notice how your page flows.  A different approach would be to slice your background into sections to create a flexible gray box.

  • Images in Table move on Mouse Over

    I made a simple table-based photo gallery.
On mouse-over, a coloured bar appears at the bottom of the selected image.  At the same time the image moves upwards slightly, presumably the same distance as the width of the coloured bar.
Depending on the position of the image within the table, either one or more rows within the table move at the same time.
I received some feedback from a viewer that they do not like this movement of the table
Can you suggest any way to make the table more stable, i.e. remain still during mouse-over.
    See: http://www.eyta.org.uk/photos.html

First, I don't like table-layouts.  They're last century's layout approach.  Nobody uses table-layouts anymore.  We use CSS floats now.
    Photo Layout example:
Alt-Web Templates :: CSS Semi-Liquid, Photo Proof Sheet
Secondly, if you're adding a border on hover, you need to add similar same sized border for the non-hover state.  Otherwise the jumping is inevitable owing to how the CSS box-model works.
    Example CSS:
    a {text-decoration:none; border-bottom: 1px solid #FFF}
    a:hover {border-bottom: 1px solid #000}

  • Looking for a VirtualCD-(vc4/000-)image converter

    Hey!
I'm looking for a tool to open and convert VirtualCD-image files. I know that I could start Win, install VirtualCD, mount the vc4/000-file and make an iso9660-file out of it, but it would be a lot easier if there was a converting tool. Mounting vc4 files as they where iso-files doesn't work, btw.
Does anyone know a tool supporting vc4?
    Thanks in advance!

Resolution has nothing to do with how your site looks - it
    only determines
the maximum practical width for a browser viewport on that
    particular
screen. Your site would look EXACTLY the same in a
    fixed-width browser
viewport on ANY resolution screen. So, chasing resolution is
    like nailing
jelly to the wall. It's a waste of time.
When you create your page, you have to make a number of
    decisions on layout
    approach:
    1. Fixed width, left aligned
    2. Fixed width, center aligned
    3. Flexible width - full screen
    4. Flexible width - min/max, centered
    5. Elastic (i.e., expands height/width with font size change)
Once you have made that going in decision, you cannot easily
    change to some
other layout type without significantly rebuilding the page.
    So -

    resolution

    Hello,
What is the diffrence between Insert Div Tag, Insert Fluid Grid Layout Div Tag and Draw AP Div?

Default positioning (static or unspecified) is all you need for 98% of layouts.
"Drawing boxes" in DW is not a good way to work either. DW is not a graphics editor like Photoshop.  It's a web authoring tool.
When you draw & move APDivs on your workspace, you remove content from the normal document flow and position them relative to the top, left corner of browser window or the nearest relatively positioned parent container.
When you preview the page in browsers, everything falls apart.  APDivs are not a good layout approach.  Here's more on why:

  • How do I make the image to a link?

I am trying to make the image a link. I have the facebook logo position on the left sidebar, but I need to make it a link. Here is my code:
    <div id="sidebar">
    <span style="position: absolute; background: url(images/certificate.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 250px; height: 150px; left: 160px; color:#600;">

      <span style="position: absolute; background: url(images/facebook_logo.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 250px; height: 150px; top: 420px; left: 160px; color:#600;"></span>
      <p><a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/WE-SHOW-UP/198687606583?ref=ts%3Cimg%20src="></p>
        <span style="position: absolute; background: url(images/facebook_logo.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 250px; height: 150px; top: 420px; left: 160px; color:#600;"></span>
          <span style="position: absolute; background:url(images/BBB.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 250px; height: 150px; top: 500px; left: 160px; color:#600;"></span>
    </div>
Something went wrong here, because the whole right side became the link, but the facebook logo is not working.
    Here is the image.
    Thanks!

    <a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/WE-SHOW-UP/198687606583?ref=ts%3Cimg%20s rc=">
It's also missing any meaningful HTML to apply that link to!
The code is so horrible I'm not sure there is a simple fix.  It appears that you are wanting that link to apply to the facebook image which is used as a background image -
    <p><a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/WE-SHOW-UP/198687606583?ref=ts%3Cimg%20s rc="></p>
        <span style="position: absolute; background: url(images/facebook_logo.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 250px; height: 150px; top: 420px; left: 160px; color:#600;"></span>
But you cannot apply a link to a background image.  Ideally, you would have something like this -
    <p><a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/WE-SHOW-UP/198687606583?ref=ts%3Cimg%20s rc="><img src="images/facebook_logo.png"/></a></p>
Where the image is contained within the anchor tags.  But that's not possible given the code we have been shown - the whole layout approach would need to be changed.
Where did this code (*ew*) come from?

  • HTML Page With Icon Buttons

    Hi there,
So I'm not too familiar with HTML pages but I think this
might be advanced...at least for me. ;-) What I have is a html page
that is set up with a table and inside the table is a background
image. The table is aligned to center and that's pretty much set to
go for the background. What I want to do now is add buttons onto
this page but I can't figure out how to have the buttons stay in
the same exact place of the background image when I change the size
of my web page. I know how to do this in ImageReady by just slicing
this thing left and right, but I wasn't sure if there's a way to do
this in Dreamweaver to make this easy.
This is what the page looks like as of right now:
    http://www.crawfordgroup.tv/4th/
What I would like to do is not have the page load up in
chunks since I had to slice everything in ImageReady. Any
suggestions? I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks a lot!
    Brian

Put the buttons into cells of the table. But (and this is a
    big one) - The
table must be constructed using good table methods. This
    means it would
have to be built so that if your content expands (i.e.,
    someone resizes
their text in the browser), it doesn't expand those cells.
    You cannot,
therefore, merge and split cells in this table containing the
    buttons.
That means you have to understand HTML tables enough to be
    able to build
    that layout.
A point I am subtly trying to make is that this alignment of
    foreground
things with background things is usually not a good page
    layout approach.
    > I know how to do this in ImageReady by just slicing this

This is the way that most people enter the dreaded domain of
    "Table Hell".
Do not use a graphics editor to write your HTML.

Basically, I have a lot of input fields, eventually also date choosers, and textareas in each of those item renderers.
Is there a reason this is not performing well ?
Is there something I can do to improve the performance ?

    Thanks for the hints.
Regarding TileLayout vs HorizontalLayout, I haven't seen much difference in performance.
But I did manage to make everything go faster **.
1st: not using the StageText on the TextInput's (changed that).
2nd: there was a font using CFF on the Label fields, which wasn't supported (changed that).
I'm not sure if those are what made the diff, but I'm happier!
**: Might be almost viable like this.
In all, I'm going to have about 7 custom item renderers in the List, but only 1 is visible at the time on screen (taking the whole visible area of the List). Some of the pages (i call them pages in such a case) will have some components that will be more elaborate, like permitting someone to do simple drawing within a region.
Yes, I'm imagining that the List component still will have them in memory and maybe recycle them if he's smart, thus making it heavy whenever it creates them. Would be interesting to see if I can optmize the creation of the itemrenderer instances. I'm still not that keen about using this approach of using a List to support such a user experience.
It  would have loved it if the ViewNagivator could better support sliding between Views, but I understand it would require the ViewNavigator to know which View will be the next View, etc.. Maybe something like a ListNavigatorView or something like that
    Details for now.
Regarding using a Edit mode, I'll keep that in mind and see if it makes sense in this app and how the user experience will be with such a mode.
Regarding using the HGroup for padding of the TextInput vs using a custom layout or custom component. You probably have a point. I'm kind of new to the Spark world, been using MX since Flex 2 and kind of got scared of the Spark world... No I'm diving head first. Thus, thanks for the hint on that. I'll digg and find some docs about the details on that!
    Thanks again!

  • Alternative to Adobe Indesign for more Complicated Data Merges?

Attached is a snapshot of what i currently have going with Adobe Indesign.
Unfortunatly, Indesign has some problems that i have not been able to find a solution to :
1.) When using the " Multiple Record Layout ", it will not populate the rest of the screen if there is an embedded picture in the background.
2.) I prefer a much simpler approach, for instance, designating a certain field as Data derived from Cell " EH3 " in excel for example, instead of relying on the multiple record layout.
3.) The Documents I want to generate are not incognito in regards to Layouts and i want something with more powerful customization and also able to use the Entire Excel File and display data all within one page, without going the multiple record layout route.
That pretty much sums it up, I've included a picture of the templatei've made in indesign, I've made a red circle at the bottom to indicate the part of the document that will not work with a multiple record layout approach, since the data export is basically a mirror of itself all the way down.
Any Suggestions as to what kind of program i should use would be most appreciated or alternative methods of using Indesign.Thank you for your time.

There are third-party programs and plug-ins that do much more than Data Merge, but they usually have a high cost and a more steep learning curve. One that I've used in the past with QuarkXPress is XData from Em Software (they also have one for InDesign called InData, but I haven't used it). They're like Data Merge on steroids. There are others, so Google and see what you can find.

  • Muse continuously crashing upon import of Edge elements.

It will let me import the Edge Animate item, however as soon as I try to manipulate it (i.e. Right click, so that I can "Send to Back");  Muse freezes and shuts down.
This is the 3rd element within this project that has done this.  I've had a couple others that have finally slipped through (Have since deleted them, as they were just tests).
    The instability is killing me!
I'm on Windows 7, using both Muse 2014 and Edge 2014.
    Am I overlooking something?
I've tried renaming, re-publishing, etc etc.
    Thank you!

Muse has a lot of room for improvement, but it is a very different application than Dreamweaver. The two are virtually opposites of each other in terms of philosophy.
Honestly, there is no "perfect" web design or web development application. I have a couple friends who still think Notepad is the best web site editor.
I expect Muse will eventually incorporate at least some responsive design capability. It would at least be nice for it to have some of the same functions as Edge Reflow, specifically the "breakpoint" features, along with some "liquid" layout functions. I have a feeling though that other features, like some of the scrolling effects functions, would be altered or broken under such an approach. Designers might be stuck with an either or choice over what visual tricks they'll have with a responsive approach versus others they'll have available to them in a fixed layout approach. Muse allows designers to create separate mobile and tablet layout versions of a web site design. I think they need to allow custom sizes to that, particularly to address large, high resolution computer monitors. Even responsive designs don't work very well on those things. Just about any web design looks either pretty empty or very pixelated on a 15 megapixel iMac monitor. We need more than just the 2x HiDPI setting (such as 1.5x and 3x).  Ultimately we're going to be stuck designing numerous versions of a web page to accommodate all the extreme differences in screen size/resolution as well as horizontal/vertical orientation. The computer and electronics industry seems to have no clue about settling on a consistent standard. They can't or won't even try to find a way to get phone users to hold their devices horizontally. It might be a good way to reduce the amount of horrible, ugly, stupid vertical video infecting the web right now.

  • Printing/Sizing issue

Does anybody know how to permanently change this 36% field when I want to print an email. I have to change this field everytime I print an email.

Keynote's native layout approach for multiple slides on a page is less than ideal. Fortunately, you can work around this by instead using the Print dialog's Layout capabilities, which lets you tile multiple pages onto a single sheet for printing. First off, in the Print menu, select Keynote from the dropdown menu, and in the Print section, select the "Individual Slides" radio button. Now, in the same dropdown menu, choose Layout, and set up the tiling of the pages as you like. When you print, you will have multiple pages on a single sheet.
(The Layout panel seems to be one of those overlooked gems in OS X -- it can be immensely handy.)

  • Which one is the Right Approach - Re Using Page Layouts or adding Web parts directly to pages instead of page layouts in SP 2013 online site ?

    Hi Team,
I am SharePoint 2013 developer. Before asking question I would like to explain the requirement in clarity.
We are developing one O365 SharePoint online site which is having 10 different page layouts with different and some common webparts and we are reusing these page layouts by deploying a sandboxed solution which is having page layouts. These page layouts contain
filter and query to display data using some condition and predefined values. By using these layouts we have to create 100+ pages. All pages will show data according to that page name and category (if it belongs any). We have not written any code to develop
the site, everything is OOB feature.
We have used below feature/list/lib of SP Online 2013:
    - Document Library
    - Survey
    - Calendar
    - Lists
    - Discussion forum library
    - OOB Search feature
Now, I would like to know whether this is the right approach to reuse the page layouts. Or can we add webparts directly where the logic resides in the webparts and add them to the pages instead of page layouts?
Also how to deploy page layouts/pages from one server to another? Currently we are deploying everything as a feature using sandbox solution.
Could you please let me know the right approach to follow. I am asking this question because we are facing below issues:
    - Sometime page layouts gets corrupted, showing nothing.
    - All written filters/logic disappear when we open layouts in Designer
    - Deployment is pain using Sandbox solution
    Waiting for your reply.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Shifa Mittal

Interesting question, to which i do not know a definitive answer.
Output Caching is used to increase performance and to reduce load on the box. However since you're in the MS Cloud you don't need to worry about the latter and MS do the worrying about the former. I wouldn't be surprised if MS have updated the behaviour
for O365 and not updated the documentation. That first office.com article is using 2010 screenshots which doesn't fill me with confidence about it's continuing relevance. Don't forget that SharePoint 2013 and O365 are technically different versions and have
    very different behaviour in places.
Generally i'd say not to worry, but in this case if you do find any more information i'd love to see it.
