Lets talk Kiosk Applications...

Okay, so I've been making a few kiosk applications (as Flash Projectors), and my one major frustration with flash is memory management.
[Perhaps incorrectly] I've come to the conclusion that despite my best efforts, I can't completely control the memory usage of my apps. The memory usage just continues to go up.
Unfortunately I need to use third-party stuff that doesn't seem to unload/dispose well--mainly Google Maps (and don't get me started on the Flash IDE components).. So no matter my best efforts at optimizing my own code, I feel that I need a better option or method (by all means, feel free to disagree and offer suggestoins)
So open for discussion, lets talk kiosks, memory management etc. Applications that run for a looong time. Generally I insist restarting the apps once a day, but wouldn't it be nice if that wasn't necessary...
Any thoughts on using an AIR app instead? Any thoughts on memory management in general? Any ideas for using a browser running full screen? Or creating a native windows app in another IDE? Thoughts in general? Should I be using Flash Builder/Flex instead? Or Visual Studio?
Thanks in advance, any and all input/ideas welcome!

I'm sorry for my rant in my last post, but I was pretty TO'd. I wasn't using any plugins with this latest attempt. The tracks consisted of one stereo, one mono, one MIDI track. It was when I tried recording another mono track, the core audio crapped out.
Lets get into the details. Here's my set up;
12 inch Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz
Latest OSX & Logic upgrades
PreSonus Firebox using S/PDIF input
1.25g RAM
Maxtor 300g firewire drive
The main drive is about 2/3rds full. The external is only 10% full since I can't enough tracks in it! What I can't understand is the Logic system resource monitor shows I should have plenty of both disk I/O speed and CPU load to work with. There has to be something else going on here. I've had issues setting up the S/PDIF with the Firebox. I use a Focusrite Voicemaster pro as my pre-amp. Maybe the digital audio is not syncing??? I'll have to test this using the non-digital inputs. There's only one firewire plug on the Powerbook. Could the daisy chaining I'm doing with the Firebox and the Maxtor be causing the slowdown???
I don't think I'm going upgrade if I can't get this working. In fact, I'm going to downgrade back my EMac running Logic 5 big box in OS 9. It's not as many plugins, but I could track up to about 12 channels. Even more when using MOTU software.
Thanks for the replies,
Tim

  • Problem with audio in 11.5.502.110, with a kiosk application from 2004

    Hi,
In 2004 we developed a large scale elearning with games to assist kids in learning to read.
We wrapped the flash into kiosk application and distributed it to schools on cd's. (we used flashplayer 6, for a windows executable).
Now we are getting support calls about audio not working anymore  resulting in the application hanging.
Although we wrapped application,  the application is still accessing some shared library, probably.
Right now we are investigating the issue, trying to reproduce. for now I have a quick question: is this a know problem for 11.5.502.110 and will it be fixed?
    Thanks!

You seem to have done everything that should have fixed the problem.
Try a clean install as described in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/928315

    Daer whom this may concern,

  • Kiosk application - Need to controller lights (on/off) from Director

    |
I have been searching for a solution to a project I am
    working on. I am
working on a touchscreen kiosk application that will be
    displayed in a
Public Aquarium. This kiosk will display fish, etc. related
    to a
particular reef. There is a simulated rock formation and the
    included
fish built around the kiosk touchscreen. The plan is that
    when the touch
a button, the display will play a video with voice-over
    (simple) but
also switch on a spotlight pointed to that specific fish
    being
highlighted. There are 12 total in this exhibit. After
    searching for
hours for a solution (it seemed simple back in the 80's/90's
    with basic
serial device switches..) where I can turn on/off the lights
    via a
computer interface (more-over a custom script able to run
    from within
    Director).
The closest I found is the X10 system w/USB device but not
    sure how will
    can control via lingo/javascript.
Thank you for your time and consideration - I greatly

    Just an update...
I found an excellent solution to this configuration. These
    are Web-based
Power Switch boxes with all the switching and relay
    components housed
within an enclosed, turn-key box. All for under $ 90 -
    contains 8
switching outlets, 2-on outlets... Can turn on/off with a
    simple http
command. I am switching 12 lights using CURL.exe (via
    BuddyAPI, shell)
from a kiosk application. You can control over the web,
    however I was
running on a simple LAN setup with just my system, router and
    2 of these
    web switch units.

They also have more advanced configs:

  • How can i let my java application closes the other opened windows

how can i let my java application closes the other opened windows: like any other Microsoft Internet Explorer windows ... provided that my java application is not the one i used to open those other windows.... thanks in advance

you'll have to use JNI to access the windowAPI
then you need a list of window handles ... I think there was a function called getWindow and in order to close them you use sendMessage .... for details check out msdn (microsoft developer network)
somwhere I saw a tool called JUtil, which might help you getting started on accessing the win api from java

  • What is the architecture for a kiosk application?

    Hi gurus,
What do you think is the best option for a kiosk application, running on a touch screen station, that doesn't allow the user to switch to other apps?
I'm think on an applet, or a web page, or a JFrame in full screen (if that is possible).
Any ideas from your vast expertise?

There's no way to to ensure that a user can not switch apps using pure java. The operation system has to support kiosk mode in order to do something like that (e.g. Windows WEPos).
You can, however, get pretty close using a JFrame in full screen exclusive mode (http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/awt/GraphicsDevice.html#setFullScreenWindow(java.awt.Window)). A tool like auto hotkey can be used to disable things like alt+tab, and you can disable the task manager in group policies.

  • Itunes store won't let me download applications

When i go onto the itunes store and find an application i want it won't let me download it! i click on the "get app" button and i can see the button being pushed down, but nothing happens! i have tried restarting my computer and downloading itunes again...but nothing works!
I am currently using the latest version of iTunes, so i know that isn't the problem...please can somebody help!
    thanks

You need to have an account set up with iTunes. Have you done that yet?
If you have and are still having this problem, try going to (in iTunes) Store > Deactivate Account and deactivate your account. Then reactivate it and try your download again.

  • Lets talk dirty

When artist come over and lay there vocals I can get the main vocal sounding great, I use a dragonfly made by blue going into a la610. But when they want to start adding dubs thats when the main vocals start sounding dirty. Meaning not as clear, but everyone likes to hear the dubs because of the little additives they have put in, or because to them it sounds fuller. I turn the dubs down to the point of you really have to listen, then you will hear them. But do as the client wants, Im not big time YET but Im working hard to get there. I tried to eq them, pan them, put effects on them but nothing sounds as good to my ear as the main vocals with a small amount of delay all by them selves.

Definitely NOT. There are huge differences
recording the same singer through different mics,
No there isn't. There is an audible difference and its a significant one, but it certainly isn't "huge". Perhaps we are struggling with semantics here but in my mind there are things one can do that will change a singer's voice tone far more significantly than just changing his mic! If things sound very wrong and you are using a high quality mic in suitable acoustics, then its unlikely the problem is down to the microphone. Moving the singer six inches closer to a mic can have more effect than changing the mic, for example.
Of course mics have different characteristics and so lend themselves to different applications, but thats just sound engineering and I am assuming we are talking here about matching the tonal characteristics of a mic to the singers voice.
And I am not in any way suggesting you shouldn't use different mics for different singers or different applications. I am just trying to keep things in perspective. Its a deep subject and easy to argue with crossed purposes. My point was simply to highlight that a problem fix can be found in the last place you look.
Put it this way, if it made a "huge difference" i would expect music lovers to appreciate which vocal mic was used in the same way they appreciate the difference between a fender strat and a Les Paul. Would you know what mic Michael Jackson used on Billie Jean if you hadn't read that magazine article? Of course not.
plus there's dedicated mics for instruments and
    percussion for a reason.
Really?? which mics are those? Do mean those mics sold in a boxed collection for a few $hundred labeled "drum mics"? or are you talking nonsense?
Apart from mics that come with special mounts or with specially designed casings to make specialist use more convenient, I'd like to know which ones you mean!
perhaps you can find one here...

  • Lets talk systems requirements for power users

Ok so... I've been a Logic/Emagic user since Creator for the Atari ST. I find the latest version to be a power hungry beast. I can only get a few tracks working with my G4 powerbook before core audio runs out of resources. In my last attempt I could get only THREE tracks. I had a drum loop, a preset EP EVP88 sound with effects, and a bass track. When I wanted to record a saxophone, I ran out of gas.
So I want to upgrade without mortgaging the farm. I could easy find myself tracking 20+ channels of audio and instruments. All with EQ and effect settings. I use Logic as a composition tool as much as recording medium. I don't want stop the creative process to have to bounce tracks around in order to get more usage.
So what kind of "box" do I need. Is a quad G5 with a ton of ram the only thing that will keep the beast (aka Logic) fat and happy? Please talk about what kind of capabilities you're able to get out of your set up.

  • Lets Talk Parameters

    Hello Discoverer Community,
I am toward the end of a project where the application leverages Discoverer as a reporting tool. I have found that the Discoverer reports I ported over to the new warehouse have saved the parameters that I ran and tested the reports with. This does not match the current report against the old warehouse because the fields are blank. A good exampl is a place where I as for a START_DATE and END_DATE that will be used to allow the user to select some data that is in a data range. When I tested the report and was building it, I did not put default values into these two parameters and ran the report for data in the range of 01-JAN-2007 to 31-DEC-2007. Now any time I run the report as any user, the two dates I tested the report with come up in the START_DATE and END_DATE parameter fields. How can I alter this? Some mentioned that PARAMETERS are specific to the user running them but I am finding this untrue.
    1) Where in the EUL tables are the parameters saved for reports that are built?
    2) Can this parameters be cleared out doing some SQL against the EUL tables?
    3) If you cannot SQL parameters changes, is there another way to set this fields to a default value other than parameter defaults?
Also, I have noticed that when I log in as the report owner, change the default for START_DATE to anything and save the report this change does not seem to get reflected to the users running this report.
Could someone give a run down on parameters and how they are stored and how they can be changed after the fact?
Thanks to all that provide some feed back on my issue.
Whoops forgot to add my version information:
    Desktop client: 10.1.2.48.18
    EULL: 10.1.2.48.18
    EUL: 5.1.1.0.0.0

    Hi,
If you have the SaveLastUsedParamValue preference set to true (in the pref.txt server file or windows registry ) then the last parameters used will get saved within the workbook.
The workbook is saved within the EUL5_DOCUMENTS table and cannot be changed using SQL. You will need to open the report as the report owner and save the report without any parameter values set. Then when the report is opened by a user the parameter will either be empty or contain the default value.
    Hope that helps,

  • Xcode Won't let me Create Applications

Since just a minute ago, I couldn't create any Cocoa or Cocoa-AppleScript applications. In fact, the whole “Application” entry in the left sidebar of the “New Project” window has disappeared.
What happened to cause this, and how can I undo it?

    red_menace asked:
“Could this be related to an attempt to customize the project templates…?”
    Yes?maybe.…
I'm “upgrade” ing the Xtools, so I'll know in 8, no 7, no 5 minutes.
