Line charts appearance

Hi,
I'm new to numbers and I need to create a line chart using a large set of data points. By default settings my line looks really, really botchy and I cannot find any option to change it's thickness. The only thing I can do is to put Data Symbols, which fills the line with donuts, of sizes I can select. Why anyone would want to do that though is beyond me.
I would be grateful for any ideas.

Hi Crocodile,
Please explain what you are trying to do. When you say "line chart" do you mean this:
I cannot find any option to change it's thickness
Format Panel > Style > Stroke will allow you to change the line thickness:
Please call back with questions.

Ian.

  • SSRS 2008 Line Chart Issue.

We are facing an issue with SSRS 2008 charts. We have a report which shows dynamic number of series on a line chart. The data values may not exist for all series for
the same x axis points. We expected SSRS to connect the missing points as average and have set the empty point option to average.
    The issue is that the
    1)
lines for interpolated points only appear when we set the color of empty point to say red and not when it is set to automatic. We need the interpolated line in the same auto
colour as the original line as we will have markers for the data points from the DB and no markers for empty points.
    2)
The interpolated lines extend backwards in the series also – we expect it to only fill the gaps and not extend backward or forward.
Are these issues known and is there a work around for these issues ? We got your name from one of the SSRS community discussions. Could you please connect us with
the right person if you are not the right contact for this issue ?
I also got following reply from one of the MS guy, it says
    Hi Akshay,
The lines should not go backward.  I have seen this happen before and I’ll have to double-check on what that occurs. If you
are using a Category Axis, make sure you set the sorting to use a Cdate() expression.  I think that might be it ,but I’ll have to double check.
As far as using the auto-coloring on the series when you have empty points like this, I don’t think that’s possible.  It would require
a DCR.  You may need to implement something along the lines described in this article  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964128(SQL.90).aspx.
When I tried the suggestions I over come the auto colouring issue and also used CDATE () but lines still extend bacawords. Can anyone suggest what to do it this situation

    Hi AKshay_Jadhav,
Firstly, I am not sure who is that MS guy you mentioned without the detail name. Based on my understanding to your issue, I think you could utilize the function
IsNothing in reoprting services to have a check whether the value is null, if it is Null, you should give a average value to this point, if not leave it to be the original value. Of course, you could achieve this in T-SQL. To
the color and marker, we could type in the expression in both feature to control their display effort.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • Colours for Line Chart

I am trying to create comparative line charts for yearly data over at least a decade (i.e. at least 10 individual lines on one chart).
Any lines over six don't print. The unprinted lines have a colour allocated against them in the associated table, but not in the chart legend - the labels do appear in the legend.
I have been trying to manipulate the Chart Colours… (which does appear to be restricted to six) without any success.
(P.S. For any American readers - my spelling corrector is automatically inserting the 'u' in colours.)

You may dislike it if you wish (we are free) but this will not change the program design.
However you can have the medal if you tell me how to superpose charts - I can't find that in the Users Guide.
It was described here many times.
    (1) build the two charts
    (2) strip every titles, legends,… from one of them
    (3) adjust the min and max values if necessary (on both axis)
    (4) select the chart which you strip then from the format bar define its background to none so it will be transparent.
    (5) drag the 'transparent' chart above the 'complete' one.
If you don't group them, they will remain 'living' charts which will evolve with changes in datas.
I didn't checked but I assume that grouping them will freeze them.
If the medal is made of TRUE chocolate, I'm interested.
It it is made of the brown mixture which is sold as 'chocolate' in the USA, I am not

  • Svg line chart  problem with latest patch?

    Hi team,
I was checking out one page containing an SVG chart that I didn't modify in 2 weeks, according to the application builder, but it seems to hang after displaying the first line series of 4 total.
It was working before the last patch was installed.
It's page 65 of application 21670 in the online environment.
Choose "automobile" from the first drop down list and click on the button, the chart appears but then it seems to be waiting for something to download.
If you move the mouse over any textual part, you can see in the status line the following message:
"xml processing instuction not at start of external entity: line 172, column 0".
If you open up the SVG source by right clicking on the chart, you will see at the end of the file an error text message returned by oracle (ORA-06502), but what is particularly strange is the presence of an <?xml> processing instruction just in the middle of the source code listing.
It looks like it is trying to append the second chart series by appending another svg source file.
Could you check if I did anything wrong or if it is a problem of the patch?
I have got other chart type running without problems.
    Thanks!
    Bye,
    Flavio

    Things are getting complicated.
I found some cases where the chart is displayed correctly, which made me think of some unexpected values returned by the underlying queries.
Since my chart is made up of 4 different series returning 12 points each, I assembled the queries with UNION ALL and checked out what was returned both in a failing case and a successful one but I can't figure out a valid explanation, the only thing I notice is that in the failing case there are some values higher than average, say 10 times bigger than the average value and for some reason the chart stops drawing points exactly after the peak value (1155.62, see below).
Each series returns exactly 12 points, some nulls, but that's doesn't seem to be the problem.
I wonder if the problem is with the "autoscale" algorithm, but I am lost at the moment...

  • 2D Line Chart question

I have Apex 3.1 . I have created a 2D Line chart with for different series (so there are 4 lines on one chart). I also have a Legend on the left side next to the chart to label whatr each line is for. In my query for those lines I have the Name for the Legend as all CAPS but it shows up as first letter capital and the rest lower case. Is there a way to force it to all upper case?
The second question I have is that underneath the legend I would like to have some type of text box were I can write a couple lines to help explain what is going on in the graph. Is there a way to do that?

You basically have only a couple of options here:
First, turn off the labels and possibly turn them into Hints. They wouldn't show on the chart, but when the user held over the data point, a tool tip would appear showing them the valuable.
Second, adjust elements of the chart. What you are really looking at here is that your data set is causing this specific issue and not the charting engine or anything like that. You could try to manually change the axis max and min to get more spacing, or you could adjust the height of the chart to get more spacing, but this may not be a viable option. You could have one set of labels above the plotted line and another set of labels below the plotted line that way the values do not overlap with anything. However, from a conceptual standpoint, it will be difficult to determine in code which line should have values above and which should have values below. When your data set changes, you may end up with labels in the wrong place if you hard code where they are at.
The current XML reference can be found at: http://www.anychart.com/products/anychart/docs/xmlReference/index.html however, that is for anychart 5. I'm looking for the link to the earlier versions...
You can use this to create custom xml where you can adjust the position of the labels.
Finally, you do not want expand the height of the chart between two points on the Y axis. That would change the structure of the chart and the visual properties of the chart and the shape of the data would be askew. You cannot do this for good reason. You can though use a logrithmic scale. In most cases though, this is not a practical solution. Data sets need to have very specific characteristics in order to be able to merit a logrithmic scale. Most queries require a simple linear scale.

  • Legend does not display with Line Chart

I have a query that I wrote with Bex Query Designer v3.5.11 for a BW 3.5 system.  When I click Graphical Display tab in the query results, "Column Chart" shows a legend, showing which colors mean what.  However, when I switch to a different type of chart, such as Line Chart, Legend does not appear.  Anyone know how to make this appear?  without the legend, the chart isn't very useful.

You can create a Web Template, Drag a Chart.
    1) Assign a query to the chart
    2) Right click over the Chart and select Edit Chart
    3) Select Chart Designer.
    4) Look for "Series" in the Overview Window
    5) Expand the Series.
    6) Activate the checkbox "Show Labels" on all the
series that you want to have values.

  • Line Chart to Compare Current Year vs Last Year

I am on BI 7 SP9. I need to create a line chart that shows 2 lines to compare  revenue for the current year against last year. The first line should show the revenue for the current year. The second line should show the revenue for last year. In my BEx query, I have the fiscal period values in the row and the revenue key figure in the column. Questions:
    1. How can I show 2 lines in the chart to compare revenue for the current year vs last year?
    2. There are 2 variables for the fiscal period - one for current year and one for last year. The user can enter any value range in the fiscal period variables at query runtime, but the fiscal periods for each of the 2 years must be the same. This means the number of fiscal periods that appear in the query result rows will vary (e.g.. 3 periods for a quarter or 12 periods for a full year). The user has to enter the same fiscal periods for the current year and last year variables. How can I determine the fiscal period values to plot in the line chart for the current year and then last year when the number of rows in the query results will fluctuate?
The legend at the bottom of the chart should show JAN, FEB, MAR...DEC instead of the fiscal period values like 001/2007, 002/2007. Is there an exit I have to change to get this to work?
Thanks for any help you can give!

You can do it in multiple ways
    1.
    SELECT COALESCE(t1.Company,t2.Company) AS Company,
    COALESCE(t1.Sales2015,0) AS CurrentYearSales,
    COALESCE(t2.Sales2014,0) AS PriorYearSales
    FROM Sales2015 t1
    FULL JOIN Sales2014 t2
    On t2.Company = t1.Company
    2.
    SELECT Company,
MAX(CASE WHEN YearVal = 2015 THEN Sales ELSE 0 END) AS CurrentYearSales,
MAX(CASE WHEN YearVal = 2014 THEN Sales ELSE 0 END) AS PriorYearSales
    FROM
SELECT Company,Sales2015 AS Sales,2015 AS YearVal
    FROM Sales2015
    UNION ALL
    SELECT Company,Sales2014 AS Sales,2014
    FROM Sales2014
    )t
    GROUP BY Company

  • Legend with a line chart

I am working on a line chart and want to add a legend to it.
For the purpose I am using
    <mx:Legend dataProvider="{bigChart}"/>
Now the y-axis in the chart can display different properties
based on the items clicked before rendering. It can be profitAmount
or it could be goodsSold. So the yAxis attribute keeps on changing.
What happens with this legend is that the bos appears but
with no text. Is there a way I can force some text to
    appear?

nevermind I was missing displayName tag

  • Stacked bar chart/line chart combination

    Hi,
I use Crystal Reports 10.I need to produce a chart containing 2 series on the same graph with:
    - one series as a stacked bar chart type,
    - one series as a line chart type (not stacked).
I tried doing 2 separate charts and superimposing one over the other, but the user wants to export it to excel and when they do so, the graphs appear as 2 separate images rather than one. it appears correctly in pdf though.
How can i achieve this, either in 1 graph or as separate 2 graphs ?
    Any help appreciated...
    Thanks in advance,
    Swathy.

    Hello Swathy,
If you can get both series in one chart then you can convert one series into line.
To do this right click on the Bar that you want to display as line.Select the series option and then select "Line" from the drop down of "Show Selected Series as:" option.
    Hope this will help!
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Line chart question

I have AW 6. I want to make a color line graph (chart) of some temperature data. The Y axis will be the temperature and the X axis will be the date for a month. So it is a simple temperature vs. date line graph. There will be two sets of data placed on this graph - the maximum temperature for the day and the minimum temperature for that same day for each of the days of the month. Therefore two lines will appear on the chart - Max line and Min line. I have been doing this for years and somehow must have formatted to show the Max line in red and the Min line in blue which makes sense. The data for the graph have been taken from a table showing three columns in the order date, max temp, min temp. However, recently most weather data has been reversed showing the lowest (min) temp for the day first since this occurs in the early morning hours of the day so I have decided to go along with this new trend and now have my table in the order date, min temp, max temp. However, now that I have reversed the order, the min temp line appears in red and the max temp line appears in blue. How do I change the colors to the logical blue for min and red for max. I must be missing something very simple here and have checked all the chart options but must be a bit blind or something.

    levlvl wrote:

Make sure you have displayed the legend for the chart, and that you have the Tools showing.
Click on the coloured square for Max in the chart's legend, then click the Pen button in the Tools, then choose the pen colour from the Color palette in the Tools. Click the square for Min and again choose the new Min colour from the palette.
To change the colour of the data points, double click the coloured square in the chart's legend, then click the coloured square beside "Symbol" in the Char Options (Series) dialogue that opens. That will open a Color palette from which you can choose the same colour as you've set for the line. Use the pop up menu "Edit series:" to switch to the Min series and repeat.

  • Flash 2D Line chart

I have a chart region - Flash 2D Line chart with two series based on different tables, both with dates along the X axis
and a figure that represents hours up the Y axis. The idea is for two lines to be displayed on the same graph so they can be
    easily compared.
    series 1
    select null link, END_DATE label, PROJECTED_HOURS Projected_hours
    from "E_LOGBOOK"."TEST_PROJECTED"
    30/07/2009 700
    09/08/2009 800
    27/08/2009 9000
    series 2
    select null link, LIFING_DATE label, ACTUAL_HOURS Current_Hours
    from "E_LOGBOOK"."TEST_ACTUAL"
    30/07/2009 800
    09/08/2009 1000
    27/08/2009 12000
When I run the chart with the data above it displays as I would expect, the dates label in chronological order along the bottom with the Correct value plotted for each series.
However if I insert a row into the LIFING_DATE table (second series) so it contains additional data for the 14/08/2009
    30/07/2009 800
    09/08/2009 1000
    14/08/2009 1201
    27/08/2009 12000
And then re run the chart this last date and value displays to the right of the existing dates so we have 30/07/2009 09/08/2009 27/08/2009 then 14/08/2009 along the X axis.
I would have expected the new data to fit in the existing range so that 30/07/2009 09/08/2009 14/08/2009 27/08/2009 would display along the bottom.
I am an oracle forms programmer new to APEX (and html, javascript,XML etc) trying to prepare a demo to my manager of what we can do with apex so any help appreciated.
If possible is there a solution without using Third party apps or bi publisher.
    Thanks Pete

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for your quick response. If I'm correct in understanding what your saying is that with 2D Line charts that have two series in order for them to display togethor then the label must appear in both series.
I've had a bash using your sql for the 1st series and modifying the second series.
    Series 1
    SELECT NULL LINK,
    X.THE_DATE LABEL,
    Y.PROJECTED_HOURS VALUE
    FROM
    (SELECT END_DATE THE_DATE FROM TEST_PROJECTED
    UNION
    SELECT LIFING_DATE THE_DATE FROM TEST_ACTUAL
    ) X
    LEFT OUTER JOIN TEST_PROJECTED Y ON X.THE_DATE = Y.END_DATE
    ORDER BY X.THE_DATE
    07/30/2009 700
    08/09/2009 800
    08/14/2009
    08/27/2009 9000
    Series 2
    SELECT NULL LINK,
    X.THE_DATE LABEL,
    Y.ACTUAL_HOURS VALUE
    FROM
    (SELECT END_DATE THE_DATE FROM TEST_PROJECTED
    UNION
    SELECT LIFING_DATE THE_DATE FROM TEST_ACTUAL
    ) X
    LEFT OUTER JOIN TEST_ACTUAL Y ON X.THE_DATE = Y.LIFING_DATE
    ORDER BY X.THE_DATE
    07/30/2009 800
    08/09/2009 1000
    08/14/2009 1201
    08/27/2009 12000
This is a great improvement the series 2 now displays fine and all the points for series 1 are plotted correctly but it seems like the null value prevents the joining of the coordinates in this series. All the points 700,800 and 9000 are displayed correctly but the graph line only joins 700 and 800.
    Any further ideas? Thanks Pete

  • Problem - over lie of data series in Line chart (Web Application Designer)

    Dear Experts,
I have created a chart with below requiments from my user by using web application designer.
    1) Key Figure 1 (Chart type -> column )
    2) Key Figure 2 (Chart type -> column )
    3) Key Figure 3 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> BLACK;    Visibility: Visible)
    4) Key Figure 4 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> YELLOW; Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
    5) Key Figure 5 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> RED;         Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
The line chart of Key Figure 3 must always appear in Front then others Key Figures.
Then following by, Key Figure 4. Last is Key Figure 5.
As I know the order of display line chart is infflucing by the order of Key Figure in structure by descending, likes below
    1) Key Figure 3 (Rank of front -> 3rd; Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> BLACK;    Visibility: Visible)
    2) Key Figure 4 (Rank of front -> 2nd; Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> YELLOW; Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
    3) Key Figure 5 (Rank of front -> 1st; Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> RED;         Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
So, I have conflict on fulfilling these 2 request on assigning the color and control their visibility and lines over lie.
Please advice me if you have any suggestion on controlling the lines order.
    Thanks!

    Hi Priya, thanks for input.
I think I should further elaborate the problems. Thanks for your highlight.
I have a lines chart with five key figures. So my chart will have five lines.
Some lines from chart will overlap if the data are same.
When overlapping of lines happens, I want to control the order of which series should be appear first.
    Likes below example,
    1) Key Figure 1 (Chart type -> column )
    2) Key Figure 2 (Chart type -> column )
    3) Key Figure 3 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> BLACK; Visibility: Visible)
    4) Key Figure 4 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> YELLOW; Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
    5) Key Figure 5 (Chart type -> Line; color assigned -> RED; Visibility: Visible/Hidden)
               KF1  KF2  KF3  KF4  KF5
    CW 1    30     30    80    80    50
    CW 2    40     50    90    60    90
    CW 3    70     50    90    90    90
    CW 4    80     70    70    90    70
As you can see, there is overlap in these value.
    CW 1 KF3, KF4  -->80
    CW 2 KF3, KF5 --> 90
    CW 3 KF3, KF4, KF5 --> 90
The order which i want the series should appear first when overlapping.
    - KF3 must appear on top.
    - Then, follow by KF5
    - Last is KF4.
So now, i have no idea to control the overlap orders except adjusting the sequence of keyfigure from query.
Feel free to give me any input!

  • Break in a Line Chart in CR10

I have a line chart that displays data points, with a line that joins the points.
Back in CR9, if there was a null value for a date, the line would stop at the prior date, and then start up again at the next date with a value.
In CR10.5, this does not appear to be the case, there is now a  line that "spans" the date with a NULL value and connects the pre and post ceeding data points.
Is there any way I can get this break to appear for NULL values in CR10.5?

    Hello,
CR for VS 2008 is version 10.5, same as the version you found the doc on. There has only been on patch for VS 2008 and I doubt that changed the charting features. No new patches will be available for that version.
All I can suggest is you download the Trial version of CR 2008 to see if that works for you.
I'm also going to move this post to the Report Designer forum.

  • "no data found" in SVG Line Chart

    Hello,
I have a problem with a SVG Line Chart!
I have multiple series in the Line Chart, which data is based on multiple select lists.
When I leave one select list blank, so that one line has no data, the "no data found" statement appears in the Chart.
But when I delete the "no data found" statement in the Series Attributes it would not be deleted. Nevertheless when I open the Series Attributes again the message is still there....
Does anybody have an idea how I van delete the "No Data found Message"???
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Chris and Cristoph -
I have found that many times errors like this are caused by SQL statements that don't really address the business need or the requirements for the chart. Let me use a simple example:
    SELECT d.dept_name  dept_name,
           sum(s.sales_total)  sales_total
    FROM orders o, depts d
    WHERE o.dept_id = d.dept_id
      AND o.time_frame = 'Q1'
GROUP BY dept_nameSeems simple enough. But what if this statement is run early during the Q1 timeframe and one dept hasn't made any sales yet? Well, they won't show up in the output of this statement. From a business perspective, you will want that dept to show on the report with a zero total sales. You don't want them excluded from the report. So how do we fix this?
    There are several options.
One dirty way of solving this is putting in a dummy record for each dept into the orders table with a 0 sales_total value for each time unit. YUK! That has wrong written all over it!
We could use a different type of join. And then use NVL or a Case or IF statement to turn Null Values into 0.
    SELECT d.dept_name dept_name,
           sum(nvl(s.sales_total,0))  sales_total
    FROM  orders o RIGHT JOIN dept d ON d.dept_id = o.dept_id
    WHERE o.time_frame = 'Q1'
GROUP BY dept_nameWe could also square our data sets and summarize with an inner select
    SELECT dept_name dept_name,
           sum(sales_total) sales_total
    FROM (
      SELECT d.dept_name ,
             sum(s.sales_total)  sales_total
      FROM orders o, dept d
      WHERE o.dept_id = d.dept_id
        AND o.time_frame = 'Q1'
      GROUP BY dept_name
      UNION ALL
      SELECT DISTINCT dept_name ,
             0 sales_total
      FROM dept
GROUP BY dept_nameThe final result is that every dept has a value. That is the key. This is how the chart expects the data and this is probably how your business expects the data.

  • How to adjust x axis of line chart for dynamic values from universe

    Dear All,
I am new to SAP Dashboard. I got one requirment that, user will pass single value to universe using prompt in Dashboard. Based on that prompt value / input parameter, universe will deliver data to plot line chart in my canvas. But, on every request i will get different count from universe. Like for request A = 30 records, request B = 56 records, request C = 2 records and so on.
Based on the count, i want to display line chart in my canvas which will auto fit the screen. (Auto adjustment of X axis e.g For A, last record on x axis should be 30, for B = 56 and for C =2). Please let me know, how can i achive this task?.
Note : i know, how to plot simple line chat with fix count.

This is based on the output you get for the selection, get in touch with the functional team and get an idea about maximum no of result set will appear on various selection options. Say example if the functional guy says around 100 then go ahead and map 100 cells for the series.
Then as arijit said you can use the ignore blank cell option to eliminate the blank rows in the selection.
Note: Eliminating blank cells will always work at the end of the rows, not in the middle of the rows.
