Linking tables from excel

Do I understand this correctly: that if a linked Excel file is placed in InDesign and I style that content.. then update the original content, I can't hold the formatting I did in InDesign?!

Yes, generally when you replace the old contents in InDesign by updating the link, you can't retain the texts and the formatting done locally in InDesign.

  • Problem to acces linked table from Microsoft Access 2010

    We have a couple of MS access databases that have linked tables from  oracle Database. When the user try to view the content of the table it gets an error saying that the table or view does not exist.
    But if i create a new MS access db and link the same tables with the same user, we are able to view the content of the table. So it does not seem to be related to permissions...
    If we delete the linked table and try to re-attached them we got the same error
    Anyone have a clue ?

    It looks like this is a question that should be addressed in our ORACLE ODBC community, since it has to to with MS Access links to an Oracle DB via (I presume) an Oracle ODBC driver.
    This community is for Oracle Heterogeneous Gateways.  That is, Oracle DB links into 3rd party databases.

    When I import a table from Excel, for some reason I'm not getting the header row text in my second column (the whole thing has two columns) and the border on all the cells like I have in Excel.
    Is there a way to make sure it imports the spreadsheet with the border and the header row text in the second column?

    I'd check the cell range specified when you import, and perhaps tick the 'include hidden cells'  option.
    Might be worth saving your Excel file back to an older version too, as long as no required features are lost.
    You can't bring Excel border styles over, though you can specify an InD table style on import...

    What is the easiest way to populate a table from an existing Word or  Excel file? I am looking at a long list with name, address, phone,  website fields and would like to avoid dragging and dropping or hand  entering.     Being an experienced Excel user before Power BI, I am just starting to explore the M and Power Query capabilities, and need help already (ain't easy to google this use case somehow):
    I need to import the table which sits in the Excel file with header row in the row 17 of Excel sheet, with some metadata header in the preceding rows of the columns A and B.
    01: Report name, Quick Report
    02: Report Date, 1/1/2014
    17: Employee Name, Manager, etc...
    18: John Doe, Matt Beaver, etc.
    Both (a) direct attempt to load as Excel file and (b) the indirect way through [From Folder] and formula in custom column -- both lead to the same error: "[DataFormat.Error] External table is not in the expected format."
    Specifically, I tried to use the [Power Query -> From File -> From Folder] functionality, select an Excel file and add a custom column to access the binary content: [Add Custom Column] with formula "=Excel.Workbook([Content])".
    It looks like Power Query expects a rectangular range with headers full-width followed by a contiguous table range to import anything, and refuses to load if that is not the case...
    QUESTION: Is there any way to load whatever-formatted data from Excel first, and then manipulate the overall imported range (like referring to rows starting from 17th using "Table.SelectRows" etc.) to read the actual data? Reading and using
    the metadata from header would be a bonus, but that comes second... The main issue is to get something from a non-regular Excel file to later work with using M formulae ...

     If the Excel workbook is protected by a password, you
      cannot open it for data access, even by supplying the correct password with
      your connection settings, unless the workbook file is already open in the
      Microsoft Excel application. If you try, you receive the following error
      message:
    Could not decrypt file.
    ANSWER: So, will have either weave in the work with temporary unprotected files or requires opening them before updating the data source (although this almost defeats the purpose of automation...)
    ANSWER to ORIGINAL QUESTION: password was preventing Power Query from reading the Excel file. For solution see above.

    I am sending you the idea with an example how you can upload data from an EXCEL file into an internal table. I am not sure if you can take data from different sheet in the same EXCEL file. I think that this is not possible (try it )

    Now you should upload the data into your own itab. The Function Module will return to you all the an itab
    from all fields and columns. Define the structure of the uploading file into SE11 - Data Dictionary. Then read the fieldcatalog of this structure. In the code that I am sending to you, I am insearting an empty line into the internal table and then I am assigning this line into a corresponding field-symbol. Then I am able to change the working area - so and the line of the itab. Propably you could you the statement APPEND INITIAL LINE TO (your_table_name) ASSIGNING <your_field_symbol>, but the example was written in an old SAP version.

    the database (server) usually has no access on your PC (client).
    I recommend that you transfer the file to the server via FTP and then you can use heterogeneous services to read directly from the file.
    If your server is running on Windows too you can use ODBC to connect

  • How to read an APO table from excel in place using Visual Basic ?

    We have enhanced some APO reports using layouts that use excel in place with custom visual basic (VB) code. For example, the VB code can append the data with additional columns that perform specific calculations and then proceed to create pivot table reports in excel..That is working fine.
    The challenge is to see if that VB code could read specific APO tables (e.g. product master tables) to bring additional elements into excel and thus expand the report content. We know that additional fields can be added to the reports, but having the flexibility to read tables from VB could be more flexible.
    Can that be done?. If so, would it be possible using exclusively the VB code attached to the layout, i.e. no ABAP?

    I am assuming you are doing this either using BeX analyzer or by reading the planning book using the RFC ActiveX component and a BAPI.
    I think it's possible to retrieve the data from the product master table. Here are my thoughts on how can this be done:
    1) You can create a generic datasource (transaction RSO2) for the product master table, connect that to a BW remotecube and use a BeX query to retrieve that values. You can then join the queries using VBA. Alternatively, you can build a muti-provider that connects your current InfoCube to the new RemoteCube and build a query from there. The multi-provider, in this case, joins the data (no more VBA).
    2) If you have already loaded your product master data into master data carrying InfoObjects then you can try the same technique as #1 but this time there is no need to create the generic datasource. You can use the InfoObjects for your master data as the InfoProviders for your query.
    3) You can try the ActiveX component from SAP which can  connect to any emote enabled function in SAP system. SAP already provided some BAPIs (check transaction BAPI for a list) which might be able to provide the data. You can also create your own function modules (be sure to make it remote enabled) using ABAP. (transaction SE37).

    linking tables is done in your SQL sentence, it doesn't
    matter if you're
    using ASP, PHP, ...
    try something like this (assuming tables are named ARTISTS

    The problem is that the I want to import data into a table which all ready has data and I want the new data to be imported into the first row of the table not in a new row at the end of the table.
    This is probably best shown by example:

    The problem is that the I want to import data into a table which all ready has data and I want the new data to be imported into the first row of the table not in a new row at the end of the table.
    No - the PROBLEM is that a table does NOT have a 'first' row or a 'row at the end of the table'.
    Rows in a table are like balls in a basket; there is NO 'first' ball.
