  • Running a Java program at startup in Linux

    Hello
    How do I run a Java program at startup in Linux? I know in Windows I can put a .bat file in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\ directory, but in Linux I have no idea how it is done.
    Thank you,
    Mihai

    This is really a Linux question, not Java.
    And then it depends on the version of Linux you are using.
    Maybe this will help, otherwise you should try on a forum for your version of Linux.

  • Need help with running a Java program on Linux

    I am trying to get a Java program to run on a Linux machine. The program is actually meant for a Mac computer. I want to see if someone with Java experience can help me determine what is causing the program to stall. I was successful in getting it installed on my Linux machine and to partially run.
    The program is an interface to a database. I get the login screen to appear, but then once I enter my information and hit enter the rest of the program never shows, however, it does appear to connect in the background.
    Here is the error when I launch the .jar file from the command screen:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: illegal component position
    at java.awt.Container.addImpl(Unknown Source)
    at java.awt.Container.add(Unknown Source)
    I am not a programmer and I am hoping this will make some sense to someone. Any help in resolving this is greatly appreciated!

    Well, without knowing a little bit about programming, and how to run your debugger, I don't think you're going to fix it. The IllegalArgumentException is saying that some call does not like what it's getting. So you'll have to go in an refactor at least that part of the code.

    We are using an Intel machine loaded with Red Hat Linux 7.2 OS to run JAVA programs. We have a requirement to calculate the CPU and MEMORY usage for each JAVA program running. instead of the actual name of the program ie. ESR.
    Does anybody know why this happens? Is there a way out to ensure that "ps -ef | grep java" gives the actual name of the java program being RUN?
    Thanks in advance,
    Harish

    You have less chance to identify which programm that VM instance is running right now.
    But you could (as we do) keep track of your programs if you save the process-id when you start the program.
    We need this to shut down running java batch programs but you could find out the used system resources with this way as well...

  • Problems of running java program by crontab in Linux

    I have a java application program which runs great when started in command line, or in shell script, or Perl. However, when it is started by crontab in Linux, it stops in the middle when images are to be generated. I guess there might be some settings I need to handle in order to run this java application by crontab. We tried to start the shell script or Perl program in which the java program was invoked, but still didn't work.
    This may be a littler stretching. Does anyone have similar experience and success?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to Create Linux-Cron Job  from a Java Program

    Hello,
    Can anybody help me to CREATE/EDIT/DELETE Linux Cron job from Java Program. Its Very Urgent.Thanks in advance..
    from
    Chakri

    I decided this didn't sound too tough so I played around with it a little. Basically because I'd never tried executing external processes out of java before, so I wanted to see how it was done.
    Just change whatever you like in the jobs ArrayList and call writeJobs.
    If you call writeJobs without putting anything in the list first you'll wipe out all of your crontab entries.
    import java.lang.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class cron {
        ArrayList jobs;
        Runtime rt;

         jobs = new ArrayList();
         try {
             // Stick a job into crontab
             Process child = rt.exec(list);
             BufferedReader cronout = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(child.getInputStream()));
             String cronjob = cronout.readLine();
             while (cronjob != null) {
              jobs.add(cronjob);

  • Java Program destroys Linux Server Display or Server logs out Automatically

    hi,
    i am facing problem when my servlet program is running.
    my servlet starts a process at server which is a simple java program which publishes PDF,
    XML, RTF files and lates long to run for about 45 minutes.
    i give a call to a shell file on the server (Red Hat Linux 9.0) which in turns calls a java

    destroyed when my Program is runnig on Gnome terminal.
    kindly help me,
    Thanks in advance for ur most important suggestion or solution.

    Sounds a lot like a bug in some of the native libraries you use (or even in AWT). Try looking into your log files (especially for X and for your tomcat) to find out if any error messages are printed.
    Additionally there are X servers out there that don't need any concrete display hardware to run (Xvfb comes to my mind, but IIRC there are more modern alternatives available). Usign that might or might not solve your problem, but would be a good idea either way.

    Your library is compiled in a way which is incompatible with the VM you are using.

  • Java program consumes far more ram on linux than on windows - why ?

    Hello dudes,
    i encountered a problem and i dont know how to solve it. i've a java application that consists of several classes and 3 threads. it consumes about 7 mb on win2k but up tp 100 mb on SuSE Linux and shows up 13 threads.
    is this something wrong with java or with linux? have any of you guys already faced the same problem and solved it ?
    thanks for any replies.

    Be careful. The Linux ps command by default shows the individual threads of a Java program as separate processes when they are in fact not. The fact you have 13 threads is normal, most are for housekeeping and appear on Windows as well.
    I can't speak to the total memory utilization, but make sure you aren't adding up the memory of each of the 13 lightweight processes (threads) and counting the same memory usage 13 times.

  • Java program sshing to Linux Server

    I am trying to write a java program and eventually a web app to do the following.
    1. get the server name, username, password from the user and ssh to the linux box.
    2. goto a folder, open a script file (the file has different function calls, I need to comment all other function calls and just un-comment the one I want to use)
    #call_1
    call_2
    #call_3
    #call_4
    I know it should always use the call_2 for this, but other programs or users can comment/uncomment these calls. So I need to make sure of it.
    3. Execute the nohup command to run the script
    4. May be (this is to be decided) send an email once its done.
    I think we can do this from a java program, but not sure about the step 2. Do we need a script for that?
    I started using JSch - Java Secure Channel, but I get "com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail". I found that I need to change /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. But for me that is not an option because of compliance issues. So how else can I go about this.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply. I am using
    public static void main(String[] args) {
              JSch jsch=new JSch();
              try {
                   Session session = jsch.getSession("xxxx", "xxxxxx", 22);
                   MyUserInfo ui = new MyUserInfo();
                   ui.setPassword("");
                   session.setUserInfo(ui);
                   session.connect();
              } catch (JSchException e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
    How can I go about using the ssh keys instead of password?
    Thanks.

    As for your JDK, I highly, no, I very highly recommend you get rid of GCJ and install Sun's JDK. This may very well be the source of your problems. GCJ is a pain in the @ss!
