Lion Server: Can user preferences - created with workgroup manager - beupdated with Profile Manager?

I've created some users and their preferences using the old workgroup manager. All work. I haven't used the profile manager (lion star functionality) so far. If  I do so, can I use it to update the user preferences already created? Is there any incompatibility between workgroup manager and profile manager?

Dang, no help with this. Oh well. Guess I just mark it as "answered" and toss it in the "Cold Case" files.

  • With Mountain Lion Server, can users access the Messages Server from outside your network?

I would like to setup a new messaging service between my employees because we have issues with most online services. I'm thinking of getting a Mac Mini Server, so I can run Messages Server, but I have an employee outside my network. Can they login to the server remotely to use the Messages Server?
    Thanks

If you're talking about setting up and using the Jabber messaging service provided by OS X server then yes, it's really easy to set up and use in and out of the office. The only trick it is, and also most other services, is a correct DNS setup so you're able to connect and use the server from the "outside".
I use this myself (via Lion server rather than Moutain Lion server) from behind a dynamic IP addressed ADSL line and have no problems whatsoever.

  • Lion Server: new user can't connect

This is a local ethernet network, Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.4.
I created 2 new users with Server app, same specs as already existing users, but can't connect to the server with the new id's. I just don't undrestand what I'm missing. The old id's all work perfectly when I try to connect.

Check your Services' ACL with Server Admin. It may happen that the new users are included in groups which are allowed for some services, but the new users are not included automatically in this group.

  • Mac OSX Lion Server Network User Login Issue

We have in the office a server running Mac OSX Lion, and several network users who've all been running happily for quite a will.
About a month ago I was added to the system, and initially we had a few issues relating to the home directory, but we changed 'something' and it all worked.
Fast forward to now, and we've added a new user - Hannah - to our system.
I've added her in the Workgroup Manager, and set her up everywhere I can find on the server. Her home directory creates on the server fine.
She appears in the Logon list on the client machines, and here's where the trouble starts...
Every time she tries to log on, it fails. The logon box just bounces or wobbles as though the password is incorrect. We've tried changing the password, to no avail. We've tried adding new test users - same problem.
We've tried sudo kinet on the Terminal as a local user, with variable results.
I'm at my wits end, and really hoping someone here can help offer some suggestions or advice we can work through to get to the bottom of this.
    Thanks in advance!

Your problems are likely occurring because you added her to the directory with Workgroup Manager.
You should really start avoiding WGM when at all possible as Apple is clearly moving away from it. Because of this, things don't always work as expected when using 'legacy' tools like WGM.
My guess as to what your problem is: When you create a new user in Server.app, two things happen for you automatically that WILL NOT HAPPEN if done from WGM.
First the user is added to the default "Workgroup" group.
More importantly (and the source of much confusion), the user is automatically added to SACLs.
Check the SACL for the user in Server.app, I bet you'll notice that they aren't a member of the File Sharing group like they should be. To solve this problem, you can either delete the user and recreate them in Server.app, or manually add them to the appropriate SACL.
I would opt for recreating them in Server.app if I were you, as I don't trust user accounts that originate in WGM on Lion Server.

  • Lion server : local user account disappear after power outage

On the server computer. After power outage I restart server the machine starts up ok.At login screen local user name disappear but there's others account same as client computer.I can log in to network account but can't log in as local.
In sytem preference local user account is still there.
I don't want to reinstall lion server .
    What can i do now?
    Thank you for your assistance.

It sounds like the user directory is damaged. You might try booting into the recovery partition, running Disk Utility, and doing a Repair Volume (and maybe a repair permissions) on the server volume.

  • Mountain Lion Server: Network users Home directory mount problems

I am having several problems with my server after a latest name change of the server via Server.app. (A first name change made problems, after that I have been trying to repair, changing the name a few times more. With latest name change, I also changed the server name itself from Foo to Bar while changing domain name from domain.com to bar.domain.com after which I repaired DNS so it covers the whole domain.com domain).
The users in the Network directory think their home directory is on afp://domain.com/Users, but the server is now called bar.domain.com. /Network/Servers/bar.domain.com does not exist on the server. Client machines (with mobile home directories) are now able to sync, because I added an A record for domain.com to DNS (not  nice, but does the job, or more specifically that job). Also on the clients, I can go to a SHARED folder in Finder with the name Bar and go to Users and see al the home directories there. But:
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/
    total 4
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 domain.com
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 foo.domain.com
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*
    /Network/Servers/domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*/Users
    /Network/Servers/domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
So, on the server looking for folder ~user does not work. It wants to  go to afp://domain.com/Users/user but that is unreachable.
Any tips on what I can do except do a clean rebuild of the server (again)?
(One of the obvious problems is that the Realm of OD is still called foo.domain.com, the origin of my problems has been that the first name change from foo.domain.com to domain.com (ill-advised, I know) failed — partly).
What I'd like to know is:
    - where is it determined which servers end up in /Network/Servers?

    Som additional info:
Other machines can mount afp://foo.domain.com/, afp://domain.com/ and afp://bar.domain.com/, but the server itself cannot mount them via Finder.

  • Can user preference be set for an enterprise environment?

I am trying to find where user preferences are stored so that they can be applied across the user base for a large organisation.  Specifically the main dictionary language (default to English US where as I'd like English UK), and Confirmation Messages (to disable the Startup message in Microsoft Windows Vista/Microsoft Windows 7).
    I found AdobeCaptivate.ini in C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeCaptivate 6 x64\ which only had 2 entires in it.
    VistaWin7StartupMessage = 0
    LowDiskSpaceMessage = 0
I thought I was onto a winner when I found the "Vista..." entry but having made my change in the application, this .ini file entry doesn't change at all.
I've tried taking exports from the hives in the registry, making the changes, then taking a new export before comparing them (using Beyond Compare)
I've tried running ProcessMonitor during the steps of making my changes, then browising through the capture logs.
Neither of these has provided me with any indication on where these settings are stored so I'm at a loss on how to deal with this.  Has anyone else attemped this before?  Or can anyone suggest another method on capturing these changes?  Many thanks.

  • Lion Server Can it manage file vaule

Just wondering, can Lion Server manage client mac's file vault, so that as a corporate admin, could I centrally manage file vault for mac's in my environment?

The question really hinges on the specific revision of XServe you have.
You don't state how many 'several years' is, and the rules vary a lot based on the age/revision of your server.
If your server is an older PowerPC-based server then 10.5.8 is the latest you can run.
Any of the Intel-based XServes can run at least Lion (10.7.x).
Some of the Intel-based XServes can run Mountain Lion (10.8). This depends on the boot EFI firmware on the machine - the earliest machines only had a 32-bit boot loader, newer versions have the required 64-bit EFI.
So you need to look more closely at your machine in order to determine how far you can upgrade it. System Profiler should give you this data, or you can lookup your server on EveryMac

  • Early on while configuring the Device Management settings in Profile Manager (Mavericks server) I received an error code -1

When I started up the Server application, Profile Manager was not selected as expected.  I selected it and started the first step of configuring Device Management in the Settings section.  I entered the organization information and went on to the next step which was to Configure an SSL Certificate
I selected a "Self Signed" Cert.  Which was the only one of the two choices that made sense.  The other being the, com.deploystudio.server - Self signed
Hit next and it processed the info and went to "Finish"  I click "Finish" and this is what I get when the setting are confirmed.
I stopped there since I suspect this error will probably come back to haunt me further down the line as if you recall we could not get the Profile to install due to the invalid cert which I suspect has something to do with this code -1 error at the get go.  I ran the one command line instruction twice to verify this was not a quirk and the same occurred.
    sudo /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh

Did you ever get this resolved? This error is usually related to DNS, hostname, or Open Directory configuration. Let me know if you still need help.

  • Project Server 2013 - User cannot create or see his timesheet

    Hi everyone,
One of my project server user has a little problem with his timesheet.
When he try to create a timesheet, he has an error message :
"Sorry ... We can not create the timesheet, because we have encounter a problem with Project Web App or with the data validations,
especially resources who are users or work resources invalid. Please check
    your environment and try again."
Or with timesheet which was create before encounter this error, he has this message :
"Failed while loading the view. Press OK to reload this view with default parameters. Press Cancel to sélect an other view."
I'd try to check every project where he is as a resource but I didn't found something wrong.
Maybe it's because one of the custom field is required but other user have no problem to create and view their own timesheet.
If you have any idea to help me.
    Thanks,
    Patmol

    Cause of the issue
    Run the Sql
    Profiler
The timesheet contained two tasks were the value of ASSN_ACT_WORK was NULL instead of 0.00000.
This caused the System.InvalidCastException in the ULS log and the user error the view failed to load.
Remove this kind of entry then you will not face the issue

  • Lion Server - Can access web server, not VPN.

    Hello!
I have a 10.7 Server serving both VPN and a website. It has an external IP via NAT in the firewall, and I can access the website perfectly fine via the external IP, however I cannot connect to VPN externally. I have been able to connect within the LAN utilizing the local IP, but whenever I to utilize the external IP both within my network, and elsewhere (via iPhone on cell network) I get the message:
"The L2TP-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator."
I'm not really sure what to do at this point. Help!
    Thanks in advance!

Did you make sure all of your ports for vpn are open? Make sure these ports are open UDP Port Number=4500 & UDP Port Number=500 test them with http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

  • Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.
    HW Specs:
    Drive: G-Drive Mobile USB/FW 750GB

    Exchanged drive. Works now.
