Loading classes and performance

In most of the cases, when a program requires more than 3 classes from a package, we often write the code as import package.* (e.g. when we need lots of GUI components we often need to import javax.swing.*). But in that package, for example the javax.swing package, it seems that most of the classes from that package are not needed. My question is, If we import each class we need individually, will it improve the performance? Or is it a bad programming style? (import each class individually often needs more than 8 lines of codes or even more!)

Well...when you design your code you will have a very good idea of what classes and what packages you will need to use when you actually write your programs. When you write your program, if you specifically know that you will be using just two classes of a particular package then there is absolutely no point at all in you including statements importing the entire package. But you have to be careful.
That is the reason why a programmer should spend a lot of time in the design rather than jumping into coding. When you have your design on paper in all details, you will know your program as a whole thoroughly. Then you will get a chance to think about optimization techniques for your code. Of course, including an entire package does no harm to your program but...unless you would be using a lot of classes in a package, be specific because this will improve your final code documentation...any documentation explaining your code for that matter. Besides, there is always a difference between a practise that is OK and a good practise :-)

HashMap load factor and performance

Hi,
Does anyone know why an increase in the load factor of a HashMap decreases lookup performance?
Furthermore, assuming that 99% of the time you will be reading from
the HashMap and writing(put) a well know amount only 1% of the time.
Should the load factor be .01 to get the best performance?
Perhaps I should use a different data structure? I am trying to
load String name/value pairs in a data structure. The loading usually occurs once, but the data can be reloaded. The data will only be
accessed via get(name). Nothing else matters. I will submit a name and want the value back. Practically, speaking the performance is not even an issue in my application, but I want to be aware of the issues involved and not blindly use the structure. I don't want to study the source. I have searched the web, but did not find anything that clearly deals with these issues. I am hoping someone who has already spent the effort can shed some light.

If you read any book on performance, they'll tell you to optimise where you need it. And you work this our through profiling - where you need to optimise might not be where you think you'll need to optimise.
Anyway, assuming that you've determined that your bottleneck will be your hashtable, and you wish to tune it: if you read any book on performance, they'll tell you to measure - if you refactor/redesign/reconfigure because you think it'll be more efficient, and do verify that it is more efficient, then you're wasting your time (no pun intended).
So, I would suggest that you write a method:
timeTypicalUsage(final int initialCapacity, final float loadFactor) {
   ... add loads of stuff
   ... read loads of stuff (maybe do this in a loop 99 times so that
   you reflect your "typical usage".
} Then call this method several times, with various load factors and time each call. If you're using JUnit, it'll automatically time the invocations for you.
Just remember that the first invocations of a method are typically the slowest, as class loaders, JIT, etc. are all only "warming up". And that you should be testing with enough invocations that each test method take at least several seconds, if not tens of seconds, otherwise, other any overhead starts to become significant.

Importing classes and performance

Is there any difference in performance between importing all the package and importing only the needed classes. I am doing an applet project and as it first must download the classes I wonder if it may be faster to import just the needed classes instead of all of the package.

of all of the package.Importing has zero effect at runtime. It does NOT cause any classes to be "downloaded" or loaded or anything like that. If you import everything.* or specific classes or nothing at all, the generated byte code will be identical, and the VM will do exactly the same thing.
Importing only matters at compile time. It just lets you use, for example, List instead of java.util.List, and the compiler then figures out what you mean by List.
Having said that, it's generally considered better form to import specific classes. This makes it easier for somebody reading your code later (including you) to see which classes came from where.

A thread, a loaded class, and a class loader

I have a class loaded. How can I find the class loader of the thread this class was loaded into? Is the class.getClassLoader() the same thing?

Unable to load class and instantiate

Hi All,
I have a java class B in a jar file which is in tomcat's lib directory. I am trying to instantiate class B from class A which is in the same jar file. But I am unable to create an instance of class B and the control in the program simply advance to the next line and there is no error printed in tomcat log files.
Can anyone please tell me what am I missing here ... why class A is getting loaded correctly whereas class B is not loaded by tomcat ?

MacBook Pro not loading websites and performing very slow

LLast couple months my MacBook has begun to slow down and now it does not even load websites. Other applications also run very slowly. Any help? Let me know if you need additional information. Thank you SO much!!!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

        The results are on the Clipboard.
        Please close this window.

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

What types of problems stem from high number of loaded classes?

Currently we are in the process of testing our code for long-ish periods of time, between 4 hours and 24 hours+ non stop. The code is not interactive/user based. I first noticed that our garbage collection times were very high (about 15-25% of our total processing time). I then looked at loaded classes and there is a pretty steady rise over team of loaded classes. At the time of start up it is around 6-7k. After appproximately 4 hours its up around 25k loaded classes. Only 35 or so classes have been unloaded over this time. I'm wondering if the high number of loaded classes occurs because objects aren't fully dereferenced but then when a new object is created it reloads the class. My knowledge of class loading is fairly limited. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if you need more info let me know.

MovieClip Loader Class - assigning Events to Movies

Hi.
I have a MovieClipLoader Class that loads a SWF into a holder
clip that is on my main timeline. Then Im using
"mclListener.onLoadInit" to check that the SWF is loaded so that I
can continue to load some buttons into the holderclip from an XML
file.
Issue:
First my MovieLoader checks that the SWF is fully loaded.
After that, how can I check that those XML Buttons that go inside
that SWF are fully loaded. I want to assign events to them. My code
below works, until the point where I start assigning OnReleases to
the loaded XML buttons. I thought XML.OnLoad did that, but it
doesnt seem to work.

and yet completely different!
Of course you can always publish to AS2 and still use the MCL
if you wish.

Loading XML using a custom class and accessing it from other classes?

I began with a class for a movie clip rollover function
FigureRollOver. It works marvellously. Three things happen:
1) it loads XML from a file "mod1_fig1.xml" and uses another
class, XMLMember, to retool the scoping of the XML so that I can
get at it
2) an onload call inside of XMLMember calls the myOnLoad
function and transfers the XML into an array.
3) so long as the array is finished building, rolling over a
movie clip attaches a new movie clip with the rollover text in it.
But I don't want all those functions in one because I need it
to be more dynamic, starting with being able to load any old xml
file instead of just "mod1_fig1.xml", plus it seems like
overbuilding to have all of that in one class, so I've separated
out the loading of the XML and building of the array into its own
class, FigureXMLLoader. FigureRollOver is then left to just attach
the rollover with text in it, extracted from the array built by the
new class.
Problem is, though the array builds inside FigureXMLLoader, I
can't figure out how to make it available outside the class. I know
that I'm constructing things in the wrong order, and that the array
needs to be somehow built inside the class function to be
available, but I can't figure out how to do that. A cruddy
work-around is to put a function call at the end of the building of
the array, which calls yet ANOTHER function on the main timeline of
my .swf to put the array I've just built into a new variable. This
works, but it's messy. It seems like I should be able to have one
line of script in the .swf that generates an array on the main
timeline (or just a public array) which I can then access from my
FigureRollOver class:

Here is FigureXMLLoader (see comments in the code for more
details) which obviously does not return an array as it is, because
of all the working around I've had to do. Note the "testing"
variable, which can be traced from the main timeline of the .swf,

been built yet, and never will be, inside of the declaration as it
is. How do I get it in there so I can return an array?

Suggest you ask this question in the Actionscript forum as

You can create arrays outside a class and pass them into it
by reference and
visa versa build arrays inside a class and pass out via
reference.
The preferred approach is to place the array in a class and
not expose it.
Then add methods to use the array or should we say to use the
class.

test.jar contains jartest.class and Thing.classWrong.
The interface class and plugable class must not be in the same jar.
A plugable interface requires two components
- Interface (generic sense)
- Functional components.
The Interface must be independant (own jar) so that it is available to the framework (user of plugin) and to the functional components. And the plugable component must not be on the java class path.
This also means that we know for certain that the plugable component is also on the system class path. That is a bad idea as well.
Given that it is pretty pointless to even speculate as to why this error is showing up. Create the correct jar layout. Test using the command line. Then test using servlets. Insure that the plugable jar is NOT on the java classpath for both tests.

Failed to load class properties and qualifiers for class BDD_UsePackage in task sequence. 0x80041002

Following situation. In SCCM we have one Standalone Primray Site Server and two Site Server. The two site server are also SMS Provider. MDT 2012 was installed on all three Servers and the Config Manager Integration was run. When starting the Console
on any of this server and editing an MDT Task Sequence, it occasionally pops up an error "An error occured when loading the task sequence". TaskSequenceProvider.log File throws a lot of errors:

Tried removing the integration on all SMS Provider Machines and readded them. It does not make a differenence. Does anyone know if MDT supports the use of multiple SMS Providers? When I only use one Provider and deinstall the other two, it works ok.

Tool for viewing the loaded classes, defining and initiating ClassLoaders

Many modern Java based servers and tools such as IDEs employ a complex/hierarchical class loader architecture for modularity and isolation. Many Java debuggers have ability to display loaded classes. However sometimes it is neccesary to view defining and initiating class loaders to debug class loading related issues. I have developed an extension module for Netbeans JPDA debugger to display such information. Please read my blog here:

Can anyone give me pointers on how I could write an agent to dump information about loaded classes, defining and initiating ClassLoaders on:
JVMTI_EVENT_DATA_DUMP_REQUEST
event.
Also can similar information be obtained from heap dumps generated by:
$ jmap -dump:format=b,file=heap.bin <pid>
May be using OQL supported by jhat.
