Loading using oracle extenal tables

Hi All,
I need some clarification regarding oracle external tables .
1) What is the syntax of creating an external table if the input file is of UTF-16 big-endian ??
2) I have seen some sample for external table ..where we will mention location of the input file as LOCATION ('foo.dat')) and also we will mention directory to look into it as DEFAULT DIRECTORY def_dir1
is it mandatory that these directory should be present in DB server ?? . I mean server in which oracle is installed .
Oracle version is 10gR2.
Thanks in Advance .

is it mandatory that these directory should be present in DB server ?? . I mean server in which oracle is installed .Yes, the directory (& files) must be "local" to Oracle.

  • Load from EBCDIC file to Oracle 9i tables using UTL_FILE

    Hello, I have a requirement to load EBCDIC file from Mainframe to load to Oracle 9i tables and then do some transformation. Then again create EBCDIC file from database table. I'm not sure if this is possible using UTL_FILE, though i have seen people loading using SQL * Loader. If possible, can you please give some sample code for this? I would appreciate your help
    Thanks
    Karuna

    Hi,
    I'm reading data from EBCDIC file in Oracle PL/SQL using UTL_FILE. I wasn't able to read BINARY data type from EBCDIC to Oracle. Initially i thought the problem was due to the following reasons discussed in the article.
    http://support.sas.com/techsup/technote/ts642.html
    <quote>
    Solutions
    The only way to overcome the problem of non-standard numeric data being corrupted by the FTP is to move the data without translating it. This will necessitate making some significant changes in your program. It may also require preprocessing the data file on the mainframe. The sections below list the different types of files and situations, a recommended approach to read in the file, and a sample program to accomplish the task.
    </quote>
    But we have confirmed that the contents of EBCDIC file is fine by looking into the EBCDIC file using a tool that will convert EBCDIC to ASCII. The contents are absolutely ok.
    Now how do i read the Binary data from EBCDIC file.
    My code is like this...
    Open the file using UTL_FILE.FOPEN
    UTL_FILE.GET_LINE(file_handler,string,lengthofthestring)
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(SUBSTR(CONVERT(string,ASCIIUS7,EBCDIC),1,4));
    --This is generating an output as "&". The actual data is
    --005. Since this is
    --declared as binary in EBCDIC file, I'm unable to read
    --and print it.
    --same is the case with other binary data types.
    --I'm able to read the other datatypes clearly
    UTL_FILE.FCLOSE.
    How do I resolve this? I would appreciate your help on this. This is something critical and immediate requirement for us.
    Thanks

  • Accesing windows files using oracle unix external tables.

    Hi, I'm trying to access files on windows2k using oracle external tables on unix:
    Oracle server on unix: oracle ver. is 9.2.0.6 and OS is 5.8 Generic_117000-03 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire
    1. Created dir object on oracle unix pointing to windows path
    2. created user
    3. Assigned read and write privs on dir to user
    4. created external table using dir step 1
    5. select on external table
    When I FTP the files into unix and recreate dir object, it works, but if I point dir object into windows path, it fails.
    Is possible to do this?
    Tks
    GAP

    Hi
    The directory object must be accesible to your Database server, so if the Database is in unix you must create the directory in unix.
    I don´t know software that allow unix systems to see a windows file system. Maybe windows can see unix from a samba server or NFS.

  • Mainframe data loaded into Oracle tables - Test for low values using PL/SQL

    Mainframe legacy data has been copied straight from the legacy tables into mirrored tables in Oracle. Some columns from the mainframe data had 'low values' in them. These columns were defined on the Oracle tables as varchar2 types. In looking at the data, some of these columns appear to have data that looks like little square boxes, not sure but maybe that is the way Oracle interprets the 'low values' in the original data into varchar. When I run a select to find all rows where this column is not null, it selects these columns. In the results of the select statement, the columns appear to be blank, however, in looking at the data in the column using SQL Developer, I can see the odd 'square boxes'. My guess is that the select statement is detecting that something exists in this column. Long story short, some how I am going to have to test this legacy data on the Oracle table using Pl/Sql to test for 'low values'. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this????? Help! The mainframe data we are loading into these tables is loaded with columns with low values.
    I am using Oracle 11i.
    Thanks

  • Loading data from one table to another using cursor

    Hi,
    I have given the below command to load the data from 1 table to another using cursor.
    declare
    cursor mycursor IS
    SELECT extract_name,from_date,to_date,BETA from temp_table where EXTRACT_NAME='GIFTCARD_DETAILS';
    Begin
    for mycursor_1 IN mycursor loop
    insert into tmp_tab columns(col1,col2,col3,col5) values(mycursor_1.EXTRACT_NAME,mycursor_1.from_date,mycursor_1.to_date,mycursor_1.BETA);
    End loop;
    commit;
    end;
    It is working fine.
    But I want to hard code some of the columns ( like flags ) which are not there in 1st table and load them into 2nd table.
    In db2 we will give commands like
    varSqlStatus=`db2 "declare mycurs cursor for select extract_name,from_date,to_date,BETA,'N','Y' from temp_table"`
    varSqlStatus=`db2 "load from mycurs of cursor modified by identityignore insert into tmp_tab(col1,col2,col3,col5,col6,col7) nonrecoverable"`
    But I want it in oracle 10g, Can any one help me in this.

    Have you tried either of the two options :
    1. Modify the CURSOR itself :
    cursor mycursor IS
    SELECT extract_name,from_date,to_date,BETA,'N','Y' from temp_table where EXTRACT_NAME='GIFTCARD_DETAILS';2. Modify the INSERT statement itself :
    insert into tmp_tab columns(col1,col2,col3,col5,col6,col7) values(mycursor_1.EXTRACT_NAME,mycursor_1.from_date,mycursor_1.to_date,mycursor_1.BETA,'N','Y');

    Hi All ,
    Can anyone help me on this ?
    We have a PLSQL procedure which returns a plsql table as out parameter.
    We are supposed to load the data in to a file using this plsql table (Table type) in ODI.
    Can this be done using ODI?

    Hi,
    We have one process with a ref cursor (Oracle) as a source and remote Oracle DB as a target. I ended up writing my own KM that populates a global temporary table from the cursor first and then transfers the data to target. If temporary table is an option for you, the rest is pretty easy.

    Thanks in advance…
    Rathish A M

    Hi Ratish,
    ODQ supports files as inputs not Oracle tables, what you should do is:
    - define an ODQ process that takes a file as an input.
    - create an ODI process that dumps your Oracle table into a file that will be used by ODQ. (interface or OdiSqlUnload step)
    - run the ODQ process in ODI (in a package)
    - create an ODI interface that will load your ODQ output file into a DB.
    You can profile Oracle tables directly using Oracle Data Profiling.
    Thanks,
    Julien

    2) Another table is referencing PHONE_LIST_ID column (the one for which we using sequence) of this table as a foreign key.
    So is it possible to insert this column values in other table simultaneously? Sequence no. should be same as it is in first table...

    The easiest way to export Oracle data to Excel is to use sql developer. It is a free download and this article by Jeff Smith shows how easy it is

    And One Last Thing
    Speaking of export, sometimes I want to send data to Excel. And sometimes I want to send multiple objects to Excel – to a single Excel file that is. In version 3.2.1 you can now do that. Let’s export the bulk of the HR schema to Excel, with each table going to it’s own workbook in the same worksheet.

    And you have previously been ask to read the FAQ at the top of the thread list. If you had done that you would have seen that there is a FAQ for links that have many ways, with code, to export data to Excel.

  • Extracting explanations from planning app and loading into Oracle table

    Hi All,
    I had a requirement where I had to extract data from a planning application through ODI 11g and load it into Oracle RDBMS.
    I used essbase as my source in technology (since planning data is stored on essbase side) and oracle as my target.
    Now the data is getting extracted from essbase side and is getting loaded into Oracle table through ODI.
    Now the client requires that they want to extract the explanations or text values also from planning application and load them into Oracle table.
    How this can be achieved?Is there a table on the sql side(since sql database is being used at back end for planning app) which stores the explanations,if yes please let me know which table it is.
    Kindly help me with this requirement.

    Hi,
    IKM SQL Control Append is perfect if you don't need incremental updates. If you need it, go for IKM Oracle Incremental Update (MERGE) or something like that.

  • How to load text file data to Oracle Database table?

    By using Oracle Forms, how to load text file data to Oracle Database table?

    Metalink note 33247.1 explains how to use text_io as suggested by Robin to read the file into a Multi-Row block. However, that article was written for forms 4.5 and uses CREATE_RECORD in a loop. There was another article, 91513.1 describing the more elegant method of 'querying' the file into the block by transactional triggers. Unfortunately this more recent article has disappeared without trace and Oracle deny its existence. I know it existed as I have a printed copy in front of me, and very useful it is too.
