Locking in EntityFramework - calling empty stored procedure releases lock acquired using sp_getapplock

I have a patient table in the SQL Server database. Clients connect to the database and checkout one of the patients and do some operations on it and save it afterwards.
Since multiple clients might access the patient at the same time. I wanted to implement pessimistic locking mechanism, So that if one client can acquire a lock to a particular patient at a time.
Also if one of the clients locks a particular patient and either crashes or closes the client application the lock should be released. In case of crash the lock should be released when we detect that the connection of client with the database is closed.
I found out that I could use sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock to
do achieve this and specify @LockOwner
= 'Session' when calling sp_getapplock,
this ensures that the lock is released once the database session with the client closes.
From the code, I call a stored procedure in database to acquire the lock. This acquires the lock correctly and if i close off the client app or the client app crashes the lock is released. This is behaving as I wanted it to.
The problem happens when I call another stored procedure which is supposed to release the lock. As soon as the stored procedure is entered the lock is released, before we even execute sp_releaseapplock
@patientId, @LockOwner = 'Session' the line which is actually supposed to release the lock.
I tried creating an empty stored procedure (just commented out
DECLARE @result int
EXEC @result = sp_releaseapplock @patientId, @LockOwner = 'Session'
This stored procedure still releases the lock I acquired using sp_getapplock.
I can't seem to understand why this is happening. It should only release when I explicitly call `sp_releaseapplock @patientId, @LockOwner = 'Session'``
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[uspReleaseAppLock]
@patientId nvarchar(max), -- Patient ID
@ReturnValue int Output
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @result int
EXEC @result = sp_releaseapplock @patientId, @LockOwner = 'Session'
SET @ReturnValue = @@SPID
END
Could someone tell me why this is happening. What am I missing here ? I checked that the session ids of both the stored procedures (for acquiring and releasing the lock) are same, so it dose not seem that a new session is being created by entity frame work
for each call to the stored procedure. Something else is going on which I am not able to comprehend. Any ideas ?

Hi oalvi,
The Stored Procedure(SP) sp_getApplock initialed with "@LockOwner='Session'" is
session scoped. Your procedure
[dbo].[uspReleaseAppLock]
did the same work as you explicitly call "sp_releaseapplock @Resource = @patientId, @LockOwner='Session'", after the SP
uspReleaseAppLock
called or the current session ends, the lock released.
It doesn't make sense to call the uspReleaseAppLock to release the lock initialized in another session. If you try, you get the error like below, as I mentioned, the lock is session scoped.
"Cannot release the application lock (Database Principal: 'public', Resource: 'patient1') because it is not currently
held"
Regarding the same session ID you get from calling 2 SPs separately in Entity Framework(EF). As per my limitation knowledge on EF, If the maxsize of the project connection
pool equals 1, you may get the same session always.
Some cautions for sp_getApplock
Locks can be explicitly released with sp_releaseapplock. When an application calls sp_getapplock multiple times for the same lock resource, sp_releaseapplock must be called the same number of times to release the lock.
Due to the connection pool, the sessions may last long, that's what you need to take into account.
By the way, is there any reason that you have to use the sp_getApplock? What is the procedure doing that you cannot rely on SQL Servers build-in concurrency control mechanisms?
If you have any question, feel free to let me know.

  • Calling a stored procedure using Oracle Ole Db provider

    I am looking for an example of syntax used to call a stored procedure from VB.Net using the Oracle OleDB provider. I have been using the Microsoft provider MSDAORA but need to move to the Oracle provider due to upgrade. The syntax used with the MSDAORA provider does not work with the Oracle provider.

    Hi,
    Please refer to the Populate DataSet with Multiple REF Cursors Sample available at the following URL:
    http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/tech/windows/ole_db/oledb92/index.html
    Check the PopulateProducts method available in the ViewProducts.cs file that call a database stored procedure "getProductsInfo" . This code is written in C# you may want to convert it to VB.NET syntax.

  • Calling a stored procedure from a url

    I am needing to call a stored procedure from a url string (or
    anchor) understand that from training to be as follows:
    http://host:port/pls/dad/package.procedure?query_string
    With that in mind, I am getting an error as follows:
    Not Found
    The requested URL /pls/portal30/at_hrfm.checkshow.showcheck was
    not found on this server.
    Here is a sample of my url
    http://servername:port/pls/portal30/at_hrfm.checkshow.showcheck
    I can see servername:port/pls/portal30, it is just the
    procedure I am having a problem with.
    Here is a sample of my source code that is created under the
    at_hrfm schema (I also tried under portal30 schema).
    package body checkshow as
    procedure showcheck as
    begin
    htp.htmlOpen;
    htp.headOpen;
    htp.title('My Check');
    htp.comment ('This should be your Check');
    htp.bodyOpen;
    htp.header (1,'Check');
    htp.print ('checkdate');
    htp.bodyClose;
    htp.headClose;
    htp.htmlClose;
    end;
    end;

    I think I figured this out. I don't think the grant to ANONYMOUS is going to work with production XE and the online documentation is in need of an update. It appears that production XE has been locked down and you will need to specify the name of each stored procedure you wish to allow to be executed by adding it to the WWV_FLOW_EPG_INCLUDE_MOD_LOCAL function. This is spelled out in more technical detail here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/appdev.102/b25309/adm_wrkspc.htm#BEJCGJFJ
    Another alternative that would work involves creating a separate DAD. Using the DAD approach with my schema made all of my stored procedures callable from a web browser, so I rejected this approach. To make this usable (secure) I would have needed to create and maintain a separate database user for the DAD and then only granted it execute for the stored procedures I wanted to be callable from a URL.
    Finally I read about using an on-demand procedure and having it invoke the desired stored procedure. While I didn't try this out, it sounds like another good approach because it maintains session security. If it can be used to return an image I do not know.

  • Calling a Stored Procedure with JDBC Adapter ?

    I'm trying to call a Stored Procedure in my XI 3.0 JDBC adapter, but I get an "...invalid number of parameters...." error.
    Does anyone have an example of a Query SQL Statement and the corresponding Stored procedure?
    This is my test code. Eventually I would like to return a resultsett from the stored procedure.
    Query SQL Statement:
    call Sp_sapxi( 'F1' , 'xx' )
    Stored Procedure:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE Sp_sapxi (
      transtype_in IN      xi_flaggtest.TRANSTYPE%TYPE,
      status_in    IN      xi_flaggtest.STATUS%TYPE)
    IS
    BEGIN
      UPDATE xi_flaggtest
                 SET status = status_in
               WHERE transtype = transtype_in;
    END;
    Regards,
    Elling

    you can clear the field key tags mandatory in the XML Schema interpreter parameter and make the Empty string value to Empty string from null value.
    For mapping : you can pass a value that is of the same format of date; but you can take your own value in the database since you are parsing the date format from one to other

  • Calling PLSQL Stored Procedure From HTML Form Submit Button

    Hi there,
    I am having a little difficulty with calling a stored procedure using an html form button. Here is the code I have right now...
    HTP.PRINT('<form action=ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete>');
    HTP.PRINT('<input type=''submit'' value='' Yes '' onClick=''document.getElementById("mypopup").style.display="none"''>');
    HTP.PRINT('</form></div>');Here is the issue - I need to find a way to pass variables to this stored procedure so it know what data to operate on. This stored procedure will delete data for a specific database record and I must pass three variables to this procedure to make it work.
    Lets call them class_number, term, conf These three variables will be passed and the data will be deleted and the person will see a confirmation screen once the delete query has been executed.
    So ideally I would want: ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete(class_number, term, conf) and then the stored procedure would handle the rest!
    Seems pretty simple but I am not sure how to make this happen... My thoughts were:
    Pass the data to this html form (the three fields I need) in hidden variables. Then somehow pass these using POST method to the procedure and read using GET?
    Can someone clarify what the best way to do this is? I have a feeling its something small I am missing - but I would really like some expert insight :-)
    Thanks so much in advance!

This stored procedure will delete data for a specific database record and I must pass three variables to this procedure to make it work. The browser generates a POST or a GET for that form action, that includes all the fields defined in that form. Let's say you define HTML text input fields name and surname for the form. The URL generated for that form's submission will be:
    http://../ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete?name=value1&surname=value2The browser therefore submits the values of the form as part of the URL.
    The web server receives this. It sees that the base URL (aka location) is serviced by Oracle's mod_plsql. It passes the URL to this module. This module builds a PL/SQL block and makes the call to Oracle. If we ignore the additional calls it makes (setting up an OWA environment for that Oracle session), this is how the call to Oracle basically looks like:
    begin
      ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete( name=> :value1, surname =>  :value2 );
    end;Thus the PL/SQL web enabled procedure gets all the input fields from the HTML form, via its parameter signature. As you can define parameter values with defaults, you can support variable parameter calls. For example, let's say our procedure also have a birthDate parameter that is default null. The above call will still work (from a HTML form that does not have a date field). And so will the following URL and call that includes a birth date:
    URL:
    http://../ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete?name=value1&surname=value2&birthdate=2000/01/01
    PL/SQL call:
    begin
      ZWGKERCF.P_confdelete( name=> :value1, surname =>  :value2, birthdate => :value3 );
    end;There is also another call method you can use - the flexible 2 parameter interface. In this case the PL/SQL procedure name in the URL is suffixed with an exclamation mark. This instructs the mod_plsql module to put all input field names it received from the web browser into a string array. And put all the values for those fields in another string array. Then it calls your procedure with these arrays as input.
    Your procedure therefore has a fixed parameter signature. Two parameters only. Both are string arrays.
    The advantage of this method is that your procedure can dynamically deal with the web browser's input - any number of fields. The procedure's signature no longer needs to match the HTML form's signature.
    You can also defined RESTful mod_plsql calls to PL/SQL. In which case the call format from the web browser looks different and is handled differently by mod_plsql.
    All this (and more) is detailed in the Oracle manuals dealing with mod_plsql - have a search via http://tahiti.oracle.com (Oracle Documentation Portal) for the relevant manuals for the Oracle version you are using.
    Alternatively, simply download and install Oracle Apex (Application Express). This is a web development and run-time framework and do all the complexities for you - including web state management, optimistic locking, security and so on.

    How do I call with outputs for any stored procedure in MII.
    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks,

    My call statement is like this
    call RESULTDATA_INSERT('[Param.1]','[Param.2]','[Param.3]', :isSuccess, :Trace)
    I am able to insert record in DB, But I am not getting output values in Query template.I have done this in Fixed Query, when I execute it throws me "Fatal error as Loaded content empty".

  • Forms - Calls to stored procedures instead of standard database actions

    After discovering Reports, I'm now getting started with Forms in APEX. :)
    While I like the basic functionalities offered by the different Wizards, there's one thing that bothers me. After creating your form, you basically get 3 buttons (not counting cancel) for the different actions, each corresponding with a Database Action (SQL INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE). This is nice, but it's not exactly what I want. I would like to replace the direct database actions by calls to stored procedures (in a package), one for each action. It would be nice, of course, to keep the Wizard advantages, especially considering the fact I would like to find a standard, easy way to create forms. So, basically, I would like to create my forms this way, but instead of linking the button to a predefined database action, have it call a stored procedure. Is this somehow possible and what would be the easiest way to realize this?
    I'm running APEX 4.0.1.00.03 on an Oracle XE database.
    Erwin

    Okay, this was working nicely. But I must be missing something...
    I made an (interactive) report and added two link columns, one for the update and one for the delete (the insert is handled by a non-row related create button). I also created 3 forms on a procedure, one for each action (I/U/D). Now, when I call my form page from the report, I want to pass the values of the different columns of the selected record to this form, so the user can view and adapt them. Seems quite logical to me. There's only one problem. The column link seems to be limited to 3 items? Euh... am I missing something or is this not the way to do this.
    Let me illustrate this with an example.
    I created an UPDATE form, linked to a procedure to modify a given city.
    This procedure has the following parameters:
    - ID (hidden on the form)
    - PROVINCE
    - ZIP CODE
    - NAME
    - DESCRIPTION
    On the other hand, I have my report which gives an overview of the cities. This report has the following columns:
    - ID
    - PROVINCE
    - ZIP CODE
    - NAME
    - DESCRIPTION
    I also added 2 empty columns to contain the UPDATE and DELETE links. Basically, I just use these to place a nice icon for the different actions.
    Now, when I click on one of these icons, I want to pass the field values of the selected row to my form. In this case, that means I want to pass 5 values to the 5 items of my form. BUT, under the link column, I see only 3 items? Am I missing something really stupid or am I handling this the wrong way?

  • Error while calling a stored procedure using SQLJ

    I am calling a stored procedure defined inside a package through a SQLJ script. The first parameter of that procedure is a IN OUT parameter which is used as a ROWID for creating a cursor. That ROWID value is the same for every record in the table, thereby enabling us to create a cursor.
    When I give a hard-coded value as a parameter, I get an error stating that the assignment is not correct as the query is expecting a variable and not a literal. Hence I removed the hard-coded value and included a dymanic value in the SQLJ call.
    String strVal = "A";
    #sql{CALL ASSIGNMENTS_PKG.INSERT_ROW :{strVal},'SALARY_CODE_GROUP','BU',3,105,sysdate,1,sysdate,1,1)};
    Here "ASSIGNMENTS_PKG" is a package name and INSERT_ROW is the procedure.
    When the SQLJ program is run, I get an error stating:
    "PLS-00201: identifier 'A' must be declared"
    I read the error message, but I am not able to understand where I need to give the GRANT permission to.

    If you're using Oracle Provider for OLE DB (OraOLEDB) to execute this stored procedure, you need to set PLSQLRSet attribute. This attribute can be set in registry, connection string, or command object. Please refer to User Documentation for more information.

  • Error while calling a stored procedure with OUT parameter.

    Hi,
    I am trying to call a Stored Procedure(SP) with an OUT parameter(Ref Cursor) from a third party tool. It is called using OLE-DB Data provider. In one database the procedure works fine but when I change the database the procedure call is giving following error.
    Distribution Object:     COM Error. COM Source: OraOLEDB. COM Error message: IDispatch error #3092. COM Description: ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:

         ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
         PL/SQL: Statement ignored.
    I am not able to find as to why is this happening. Please let me know any clues /help to solve this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

  • With JDBC, calling a stored procedure with ARRAY as out parameter

    Hi,
    I want to use the data type ARRAY as an out parameter in an Oracle stored procedure. I want to call the stored procedure from

  • How to call a stored procedure from my JSP?

    Hi to all,
              I have a very simple jsp page and a simple sql server stored procedure!
              I need to call this stored procedure by passing two parameters.
              My result set will have 4 columns.
              I would really appreciate any input on how to issue this call to a SP.
              I am new to JSP.
              Regards,
              Sam

              Sam,
              BEA provides examples that are shipped with the product under
              <beahome>\weblogic700\samples\server\src\examples\
              Look at the jsp directory for JSP examples that access a database and look at
              say the jdbc\oracle\storedprocs.java for an example of java code calling out to
              a stored procedure - - by combining one of the jsp database examples with this
              stored procedure example you should be 'good to go'

  • Ssrs 2008 r2 report dataset call a stored procedure

    I am modifying an existing SSRS 2008 r2 report. In a dataset that already exists within the ssrs 2008 r2 report I need execute
    a stored procedure called StudentData and pass 3 parameter values to the stored procedure. The stored procedure will then return 5 values that are now needed for the modified ssrs report. My problem is I do not know how to have the dataset call the stored procedure
    with the 3 parameter values and pass back the 5 different unique data values that I am looking for.
    The basic dataset is the following:
    SELECT  SchoolNumber,
            SchoolName,
            StudentNumber,
     from [Trans].[dbo].[Student]
     order by SchoolNumber,
              SchoolName,
              StudentNumber
    I basically want to pass the 3 parameters of SchoolNumber, SchoolName, and StudentNumber to the
    stored procedure called StudentData from the data I obtain from the [Trans].[dbo].[Student]. The 3 parameter values will be obtained from the sql listed above.
    The  columns that I need from the stored procedure called  StudentData will return the following data columns
    that I need for the report: StudnentName, StudentAddress, Studentbirthdate, StudentPhoneNumber, GuardianName.
    Thus can you show me how to setup the sql to meet this requirement I have?

    Hi wendy,
    After testing the issue in my local environment, we can refer to the following steps to achieve your requirement:
    Create three multiple parameters named SchoolNumber, SchoolName and StudentNumber in the report. Those available values from the basic dataset SchoolNumber, SchoolName and StudentNumber fields.
    If you want to pass multiple values parameter to stored procedure, we should create a function as below to the database:
    CREATE FUNCTION SplitParameterValues (@InputString NVARCHAR(max), @SplitChar VARCHAR(5))
    RETURNS @ValuesList TABLE
    param NVARCHAR(255)
    AS
    BEGIN
    DECLARE @ListValue NVARCHAR(max)
    SET @InputString = @InputString + @SplitChar
    WHILE @InputString!= @SplitChar
    BEGIN
    SELECT @ListValue = SUBSTRING(@InputString , 1, (CHARINDEX(@SplitChar, @InputString)-1))
    IF (CHARINDEX(@SplitChar, @InputString) + len(@SplitChar))>(LEN(@InputString))
    BEGIN
    SET @InputString=@SplitChar
    END
    ELSE
    BEGIN
    SELECT @InputString = SUBSTRING(@InputString, (CHARINDEX(@SplitChar, @InputString) + len(@SplitChar)) , LEN(@InputString)-(CHARINDEX(@SplitChar, @InputString)+ len(@SplitChar)-1) )
    END
    INSERT INTO @ValuesList VALUES( @ListValue)
    END
    RETURN
    END
    Use the query below to create a stored procedure, then use it to create a dataset to return 5 values:
    create proc proc_test(@SchoolNumber nvarchar(50),@SchoolName nvarchar(50),@StudentNumber nvarchar(50))
    as
    begin
    select StudnentName, StudentAddress, Studentbirthdate, StudentPhoneNumber, GuardianName
    from table7 where SchoolNumber in (SELECT * FROM SplitParameterValues (@SchoolNumber,','))  and SchoolName in(SELECT * FROM SplitParameterValues (@SchoolName,','))  and StudentNumber in (SELECT * FROM SplitParameterValues (@StudentNumber,','))
    end
    Right-click the new dataset to modify the parameter value in the Parameters pane as below:
    =join(Parameters!SchoolNumber.Value,",")
    =join(Parameters!SchoolName.Value,",")
    =join(Parameters!StudentNumber.Value,",")
