Losing attached style sheets when updating template

I am creating a new site using Dreamweaver CS3, temporarily uploaded at:
http://www.sharpeacademy.co.uk/nick-jackson.co.uk/sharpeacademy/theatrearts/
All my pages are created from a master template which contains formatting for the header, sidebar and footer.
When subsequent pages were created, I attached new style sheets as and when I added new sections to the main content area.
The problem I am having now is, when I update the template all these style sheets are being detached from the relevent pages and I have to reattach each time. I tried attaching them to the template but it didn't help.

That's what I thought (I say, trying to sound like I know what I'm doing!)
This is the relevant code for my page - in this instance it's a tabbed panel which is losing the formatting:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/theatrearts_template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" -->
<script src="../javascript/locationTabbedPanel.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="../css/locationTabbedPanel.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<head>
<link href="../css/sidebarNav_theatrearts.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="../javascript/sidebarEmail.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../javascript/sidebarEmail_theatrearts.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="../css/sharpeacademy_textStyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="../css/sidebarEmail_theatrearts.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="../javascript/jquery-1.2.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../javascript/menu-collapsed.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<!--[if lt IE 8]>
<style type="text/css">
li a {display:inline-block;}
li a {display:block;}
</style>
<![endif]-->
The style sheet looks like it's there in the code but it doesn't show in my css palette.
If I then re-attach it appears twice in the code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<link href="../css/locationTabbedPanel.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/theatrearts_template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" -->
<script src="../javascript/locationTabbedPanel.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="../css/locationTabbedPanel.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<head>
<link href="../css/sidebarNav_theatrearts.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="../javascript/sidebarEmail.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../javascript/sidebarEmail_theatrearts.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="../css/sharpeacademy_textStyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="../css/sidebarEmail_theatrearts.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="../javascript/jquery-1.2.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../javascript/menu-collapsed.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<!--[if lt IE 8]>
<style type="text/css">
li a {display:inline-block;}
li a {display:block;}
</style>
<![endif]-->
If I then make any changes to the template, I'm back where I started. I've just about got my head around Dreamweaver but there's a long way to go to understand the coding.

  • Attach Style Sheet not doing anything in CC

    I switched from DW CS6 to CC and found what appears to be a bug:
    Start a new HTML document or open an existing one. Click Class and select Attach Style Sheet.. from the Properties tab and nothing happens.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Hi filip0,
    Thanks for reporting this issue to us. We are aware of this issue and you can expect this to be fixed in the next DW update.
    This happens only when the CSS Designer panel is closed and you happened to relaunch DW and try attaching a stylesheet.
    I would suggest you to have CSS Designer panel open and try out this workflow .You can find it at Window>CSS Designer

  • Using more than one attached style sheet

    I have one document with two attached style sheets. One style
    sheet defines how to display links for a navigation panel and the
    other style sheet defines how to display links within the body of
    the document. How can I indicate which style to use with a
    particular link? It seems one style sheet is predominant....
    Thanks for your help

    Why have two stylesheets? Merge the rules together into a
    single sheet. And
    read these -
    Pseudo-classes and container styles are what you need - here
    are some
    tutorials.

  • How to bring Sample CSS Style Sheets into a Template?

    I am creating a site from scratch using CS4 Template.  Can I incorporate more than one DW Sample CSS Style Sheet?  And how do I bring them into the Template site?
    Thanks, g

    Thank you.  I added the 3 sample css style sheets I want to use into my site.  Now I am trying to bring a different sample css into different sections of the layout.  Example:
    Sidebar 1: green/yellow
    Sidebar 2: red/yellow
    Middle: blue/yellow
    I seem to only be able to have one for the whole page.  Is this true?
    What I am doing is clicking on the div tag: <div.sidebar#sidebar1>, then "Edit CSS" and then scroll down in the Class window to "attach style sheet" and there at the bottom is a link to the sample css style sheets.  I click on the one I want and it changes the css for the whole page not just the sidebar 1. Is there a way I can get a different css sample style sheet for each sidebar in a 3 column layout, and a different sample css for the middle?
    thank you very much

  • Attached style sheet only shows background

    Problem attaching style sheet to a page. It only shows the background color, nothing else. The .css code is there, but the background is all that shows up in design view.

    You need to add some HTML content to your page.  CSS doesn't DO anything on it's own.  It needs HTML tags to grab onto.  And you have none to speak of.
    Paste this into your HTML document after the </head> tag.
    <body>
    <div id="container">
    <div id="header">
    <h1>Header H1</h1>
    <!--end header --> </div>

  • Dreamweaver CC understanding external style sheets when using Fluid layouts?

    I'm attempting to build a website using the Dreamweaver CC Fluid layout feature. I've been using this tutorial:
    http://www.adobe.com/inspire/2012/08/fluid-grid-layouts-dreamweaver-cs6.html
    The bit i'm stuck at is when it comes to attaching a external style sheet to format the text and content. So to be clear, i've already created my fluid layout and created a 'layout.css' file when promted, then using some html 5 class div tags (header, navigation and article) i've built my layout. All doing what I want up to this point.
    Now I need to start adding content and from what I understand its much better practice to set up another external style sheet for the text formatting and styling.
    I used the CSS Designer to 'create a new CSS file', called it 'typography.css' and I can see its linked to the main Source Code file.
    I understand that theory but here is where its confusing for me:
    After creating and linking the new CSS file what do I do next? Do I have to hand code in various text formatting ids or is there a more visual way of doing it? Or do I select my text content in the source code page and then press the '+' button in the 'Selectors' panel to start adding ids that way? And should the class or id names in the new CSS file be the same as in the layout CSS file or different?
    I guess I dont really understand excatly how external style sheets should be created and implemented, all the youtube vids i've watched so far are done with hand coding but i'd like to use the Properties panel to do it in a more visual way if possible.
    Any tips or help greatly appreciated, some basic learning needed. Thanks.

    Giving a detailed explanation of  how to best use CSS goes beyond the scope of what this forum can do.  There are volumes of books, blogs and tech sites devoted to this  topic.

  • Attaching style sheets to whole website?

    My question about attaching CSS style sheets remains unanswered as far as globally having them appear in the panel for the whole site. David Powers did answer me about how to add them to new sheets, but I have a site I imported from GoLive and what it looks like if I'm correct is that I have to attach it to each page individually to have it appear in the panel each time. Of course once I've done that to each page they will 'stick', but what I would like is if I create a style sheet and save it to the root, that it appear for any page that exists in the root level. Am I wrong? Or is there a way to make it appear for all pages without individually attaching?
    Thanks

    Style sheets must be attached to each page. One simple way of adding the style sheet to existing pages is to to a Find and Replace operation.
    Find:
    </head>
    Replace with:
    <link href="styles/mystylesheet.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    This uses a document-relative path to the stylesheet, so you would need to use a site-root relative link or do it separately for each level of the site hierarchy.

  • ASP getting removed when updating Template

       Hello,
    I have a strange problem I can seem to find an answer for.
    I'm using Dreamweaver Templates, and on some of my individual pages I am also using ASP code for contact forms.
    In theory this code is outside the template and shouldn't be removed when I do a template update because codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked is set to false.
    The bolded line of code is the ASP code on my child pages, and everytime I update the template this line of code gets removed. It seems that if I remove the @ symblo the code doesn't get removed. But I don't think it's valid ASP anymore.
    <%@ Page Language="C#" CodeFile="default.aspx.cs" Inherits="contactform" ResponseEncoding="utf-8" %>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="../Templates/Main.dwt.aspx" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
    Now when I run an update on my main template, and check my child page, the ASP code will be removed.
    The strange thing is that if I use placeholder text instead, it won't be stripped/removed out of the template.
    The pain is I have about 10 pages (for now) to add this line to everytime I update the template, which is actually happening more and more now.
    Does anyone know why this particular ASP code gets removed any time I update my Main template?
    Thanks,
    M
    /edit: It seems that if I remove the @ from this line, I can the code to "stick" and not be removed.

    If I understand correctly, Dreamweaver will treat the area outside the HTML as an editable region when codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked is set to false?
    If my maintemplate has this code: /Templates/mainTemplate.dwt
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
    And my child page has this code: /products/index.php
    <%@ Page Language="C#" ContentType="text/html"  CodeFile="default.aspx.cs" inherits="contactform" ResponseEncoding="utf-8" %>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="../Templates/B2B.dwt.aspx" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
    Theoretically now when I update the mainTemplate.dwt Dreamweaver shouldn't strip this code out. Correct?
    If this being correct, when I use Dreamweaver and update the mainTemplate.dwt it strips this editable region out of the child pages. This is not excepted result, I was excepting that Dreamweaver to leave this code alone in its editable region.
    Thanks in advance David,
    -M.

  • Contribute Crashes when 'Updating Templates'

    Hi,
    This is really starting to drive me round the bend :(
    I have installed Contribute 3 on an updated Windows XP
    machine to allow a staff member to edit a website.
    Contribute runs through the 'Create a connection' wizard
    without any problems but when you click 'Finish' and it starts to
    download the templates from the site it hangs every time. I have
    tried connecting to the same site using Contribute on my mac with
    no problems, I have tried connecting to different sites on the
    affected pc with the same problem.
    Thus far I have ruled out
    Template files (work on different pc and mac)
    FTP Details (known good and have connected successfully using
    IE)
    Our network (another pc in the office + mac is fine)
    Windows firewall is switched off. I'd really appreciate any
    help with this so I can get on with my work :)
    Thanks in advance
    Danny

    Anyone? Anyone at all? Please :)

  • Cannot find admintemplate.dwt error when updating template

    I have a site I am working on.  Each page was created using a template that I created.  Everything was working fine when I would update the template, every page would update.  Now when I make a change to the template, DW asks if I would like to update the template files and I click Update.  I typically change the dropdown box to "Entire Site" (not sure if that's what I'm supposed to do).  Now when I select "Entire Site", I receive the following error:
    Error accessing (path to file \admintemplate.dwt" file not found (error code 2).
    I didn't create an "admintemplate.dwt" so what is this referring to and how do I fix it from trying to look for that file each time I update the template?

    That makes perfect since.  Thx for the great explanation.  So even though the info isn't the doctitle, would it be ok to have
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    or would it be better to have it something like
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->

    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    Finally, just so you'll know, the keywords meta tag is no longer used by any of the major search engines.  If it helps you feel better, you can continue to use it, but the keyword contents will have no bearing on any page ranking or search exposure for your site.
    Yes I do realize that, but my customers always want to have them even though I tell them otherwise.|
    It's like you said, "It helps them feel better.  LOL"

  • Dreamweaver CS6 hangs when updating template

    Hi there - got a bit of a problem... When I update a template for the FIRST time, it alters all the child pages. However, when I then make a template change and try to update the template, it just hangs on the 'Update Pages' box - I leave it for about 5 mins andstill nothing, so have to manually stop it. Does anyone know what's going on?

    I have CS6 and running windows XP. Mine also hangs up. Tried what you said arorasps but does nothing.
    Also before that, I get a splash screen asking for user name and password.
    I just cancel out of that, because I never had to do that before.

  • Error when updating template

    Hi all,
    Does anyone know why I would be getting the error below:
    While executing receiveArguments in File_Save.htm, the
    following Javascript error(s) occured:
    At line 45 of the file "c:\program
    files\macromedia\dreamweaver
    mx\configeration\menus\mm\file_save.js":
    exception throw in native function.
    I'm using dreamweaver mx 2004. It only seems to happen when I
    save a template. Dreamweaver does it's usual caching but does not
    get passed that to apply changes to all files using this template
    though it does save the template itself.
    Thanks
