Lousy publish behaviour - focus stealing

While editing, ical will automatically update a published callendar. Unfortunately it randomly resets user input focus throwing my editing task into disarray, and this time ical crashed (race-condition?).
Is anyone else running into this focus-stealing behaviour?
Could the developers look into a non-intrusive way of publishing and syncing iCal? Maybe build-in better use of CalendarStore.framework for iCal? If necessary upgrade it to manage publishing calendars. Then my apps would automatically benefit. Push notifications via MobileMe, exchange, and others would work better too.

Try this: When you are in the window you wish to be "pinned", eg; not go away when you click elsewhere, right click on the tab representing that window, and click on "pin as App tab". Can also be abbreviated as alt-p WITHOUT hitting the tab, as long as you are inside the window you wish to preserve.
This appears to solve the "steal focus" issue, I hope it is useful to you wrt your problem.

  • Openbox - activate window demanding attention / focus stealing ?

    Hi there,
    I'm willing to switch to Openbox (instead of Kwin) in KDE, however I'm addicted to medium level of focus stealing prevention policy and "Activate window demanding attention" shortcut. AFAIK Openbox doesn't have multiple focus stealing policy levels, neither "activate..." ability.
    Is there any way to achieve that? Some scripting, prayers, anything? I'd really like to get back to Openbox, it's so fast and snappy, but not without this feature.

    Yes, is does what is says: do not give focus to new windows. If you start, for example, a terminal, then it will not become in focus unless you explicitly click in window (usability problem, but I can live with it). However it does not prevent focus stealing, any app can bring itself in focus at any time without my interaction. Steps to reproduce the problem:
    Set <focusNew>no</focusNew>
    Start any slow app. that requests focus when it is initialized (eg. NetBeans, OpenOffice, Matlab etc.)
    Before the app. is fully started, switch to your browser window -> Quick post -> textarea (right under in this page).
    Type any text for 3-10 seconds while the app in step 2 was starting. At some point the app will be initialized and will bring itself into focus forcefully, so everything you type will be sent to that app (remember, you was typing into a webrowser -> textarea).
    Enjoy Matlab bitching over unknown command "rea)."  OpenOffice starting automatic recovery because you hit space accepting default "Yes, start recovery". Netbeans shutting down because you hit ctrl+w to close current tab in Firefox.
    Focus stealing is annoying by itself. No application has a right to bring itself in focus, except: if it is a child window of the app currently being in focus or if that app was started by the app currently in focus. In all other cases the window must stay minimized even if it is an system prompt asking for password (OK, system messages are tolerable... but not OpenOffice/Matlab or any other crappy app =\ ).

  • CS4 & CS5 focus stealing when debugger writes to output panel

    I have an incredibly frustrating problem going back to CS4.  I'm running on Win7 with dual monitors.  After hours, days, or weeks while running a FLA through the debugger, the IDE gets into a bad state.  Any time the debugger outputs text into the output panel (via trace), the IDE will 'steal' focus from whatever app I'm in. So if i'm writing an email, it will suddenly jump focus to CS5.  If there's a lot of debug trace spew, it's impossible to work.  It steals focus from flash player itself too, so the app continuously 'loses focus and I have to go find it again.
    The other symptom associated with this is if the FLA I'm debugging hits an exception/crash, the flash IDE AND flash player freeze.  I must close the player in order to get the IDE to respond again.
    Non-solutions (these don't work)
    1. Restarting IDE
    2. Cold boot
    3. System restore to an older version
    Solutions:
    Usually, uninstalling and reinstalling the IDE solves this.  ***
    ***However, recently, not even reinstalling the IDE solves this. I even tried using adob'e "cleanup tool" prior to reinstall.  I had to reinstall my entire Win7 OS.  This was 2 days ago, and today, the problem already came back.  I haven't found any information on this anywhere after extensive searching.
    My system is a cookie cutter win7 installation with latest system updates, plus this software:
    Eclipse for PHP debugging
    Xampp171 (apache, mysql, phpmyadmin)
    utorrent
    skype
    chrome w/ default flash player
    explorer w/ debug flash player
    Any light shed on this issue would be very highly appreciated.
    Thanks ahead!

    Yeah... I think CS5 thinks it's doing things correctly.
    It tries to keep the proportions the same as the original composition.
    I did an experiment where I scaled the the same circle in the output module to 100x360. CS5 writes AR info in the file that tries to still keep the 16:9 proportions - the result looks horrible.
    I usually work with widescreen PAL footage (PAR 1,46). 720x576.
    We send a scaled down version to clients for preview purposes, so we scale the 720x576 image to 640x360. Crop 4 pixels from the top and bottom to make the height 352 (dividable by 16, better for compression)
    Now the scaled down clip has jagged edges from the CS5 aspect ratio correction. If there were no AR info written in the file, the result would look perfect, like it was in CS3 and CS4.
    Is there a way to turn it off in CS5?

  • Questionable Flickr publishing behaviour

    I'm a long time user of Lightroom 1&2, just trying version 3. Up until now I've been using Jeffrey's Flickr upload plugin but the built in publisher is the single biggest draw for me to upgrade. There's a problem though:
    I've set up a couple of smart photosets. One for my Hipstamatic shots and one for my 5* photos. When Lightroom publishes to Flickr it seems to upload the photos that occur in both sets twice, instead of uploading once and then adding them to the two sets. This behaviour is plain broken. I want one copy of the photo with one set of comments and one set of views. That single photo should be in two sets.
    Am I misunderstanding something or should I submit a bug report?

    Wow, that is one shocking bug reporting system. And well hidden too. I spent 15 mins clicking around the support site trying to submit a bug before eventually searching in the forum and finding the link. (Here, if anyone else needs it: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform).
    Only to be told, after I'd filled out the form that:
    "Due to the volume of submissions we receive, responses to inquiries are generally not possible. However, we may contact you if we need clarification on your submission."
    That is not acceptable, in my opinion. I'm a paying customer and I've taken _my_ time to submit a bug report. I expect the courtesy of a reply.
    Ho hum.
    So this issue is Google-able I've pasted the bug report below...
    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
    A photo that appears in multiple Flickr smart photosets gets uploaded multiple times.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1) Add tags "test" and "dupe" to a photo.
    2) Create a Flickr smart photoset of photos having keyword "test".
    3) Create a Flickr smart photoset of photos having keyword "dupe".
    4) Publish both sets.
    Results:
    You'll have two separate photos in your photostream.
    Example:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikesten/4920623828/in/set-72157624790402014/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikesten/4916415118/in/set-72157624780952482/
    Expected results:
    The photo should be uploaded _once_ (and so get one set of comments and one count of views) but be _added_ to the photosets.
    Example:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikesten/254443237/in/set-72157594302613079/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikesten/254443237/in/set-72157594314026167/

  • How to prevent focus stealing?

    hi everyone, does anybody knows how can i disable apps from stealing the windows focus?
    it is very annoying...
    or a system hack for this?
    thanks...

    thanks for your reply, for example, when you are using a program, and you have some others in the background, and suddenly, there is that app in front of you! iMovie does it always when it finishes rendering or exporting...
    it is really annoying, you already know what is running on your computer, you dont need to be reminded from the great software developer who thinks you just forgot one running app, or that your task it's done!
    how can it be done? perhaps there is a special command to deal with this...

  • Xmonad focus stealing issue

    It would appear that I haven't the Hackell skills achieve this:  I'm trying to prevent any window from stealing focus with the exception of new terminal windows.  For instance, I'm currently focused on a terminal (urxvt) and I hit mod+shift+f to open Firefox.  I don't want focus to switch to Firefox.  But if I hit mod+shift+enter to open another terminal I do want that to steal focus.  I've investigated the Xmonad faq but have not been able to adapt the provided solution to my problem.
    http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmon … ling_focus

    Hi zosodk69,
    Well, I think I found a possible solution to your problem by using "doF W.focusDown". The problem is that you must specify what applications will not steal focus instead of specifying the ones that will.
    To achieve this, you must create a ManageHooks to put there the windows that will not steal focus. Here is an example of my ManageHooks:
    -- Manage hook
    myManageHook :: ManageHook
    myManageHook = (composeAll . concat $
    [ [resource =? r --> doIgnore | r <- myIgnores]
    , [className =? c --> doShift (myWorkspaces !! 1) | c <- myWebS ]
    , [className =? c --> doShift (myWorkspaces !! 4) | c <- myChatS ]
    , [className =? c --> doShift (myWorkspaces !! 3) | c <- myGfxS ]
    , [className =? c --> doShift (myWorkspaces !! 5) | c <- myMusicS ]
    , [className =? c --> doFloat | c <- myFloatFC]
    , [className =? c --> doCenterFloat | c <- myFloatCC]
    , [name =? n --> doSideFloat NW | n <- myFloatSN]
    , [className =? c --> doF W.focusDown | c <- myFocusDC]
    , [composeOne [ isFullscreen -?> doFullFloat ]]
    where
    role = stringProperty "WM_WINDOW_ROLE"
    name = stringProperty "WM_NAME"
    myIgnores = ["desktop","desktop_window"]
    myWebS = ["Chromium","Firefox"]
    myGfxS = ["gimp-2.6", "Gimp-2.6", "Gimp", "gimp", "GIMP"]
    myChatS = ["Pidgin", "Xchat"]
    myMusicS = ["Clementine"]
    myFloatFC = ["Oblogout"]
    myFloatCC = ["File-roller", "zsnes", "Gcalctool"]
    myFloatSN = ["Event Tester"]
    myFocusDC = ["Firefox", "Chromium"]
    As you can see, Firefox and Chromium (as classname) will not steal foculs becouse they are in myFocusDC managehook, which is declared as:
    [className =? c --> doF W.focusDown | c <- myFocusDC]

  • Focus Stealing

    Is there a way to prevent ARD from constantly stealing the focus away from the window I have in front?
    I have Preferences/Tasks/Always change focus to active task unchecked.
    I usually have several windows open at the same time, and as soon as a client completes a task such as rebooting, it steals the focus. This is very disruptive and irritating, and could cause me to incorrectly enter keystrokes.
    If not, then this is one for the feature request.

    Thank you for your valuable reply, but as I said I can't find it again. Before posting I searched for "command", "tab", and "command && tab".
    Using your keyword "command-tab" produces a single result - this very thread.
    Anyone else?

  • Focus-stealing  Windows in Photoshop CS4

    Hello again,
    since PS CS4 came out I have worked quite a bit with it. The thing that bugs me the most is the new window-behaviour.
    I have to ad, that I work on a Windows/Intel/PC-Workstation and I am not used to flying windows...
    In older versions of Photoshop a window in the workspace was not able to cover palettes. This has changed with CS4 and it is driving me crazy.
    Is there any way to change the window-behaviour back to were it was in Version CS3?
    I would rather have the new behaviour as an option than a given feature.

    Found it, under preferences its 'zoom resizes window', what a stupid feature!

  • Xfce bizzarre "random" menu focus stealing issue

    Oh boy... This is a weird one. You know how applications menus (File/Edit/View/etc) highlight and take keyboard focus away from the app when you press Alt? Well that happens on my machine without me pressing any keys... About once every 20 seconds. I'm about to go insane
    It didn't always use to happen, but after doing a pacman -Syu I've got it. It's not a keyboard problem as far as I know, I switched out my MS Natural keyboard out for some crap Dell keyboard and still had the same problem (both ps/2). Seems to be a problem in all applications where just pressing Alt grabs focus from window (all Qt apps, OpenOffice). Apps where you have to press ALT+[Key] to drop down menu are fine.
    Any ideas where I can even begin figuring this thing out? I'd rather avoid reinstalling if I can, that's my last resort. I thought it could have been SCIM at first, but problem still happens with it disabled. Here's my xorg.conf for what it's worth, although there's nothing weird about it:

  • How do I stop Ical from stealing focus?

    Is anyone aware of a way to stop ical from stealing focus when events are created or modified?  I do not want to lose the ability to fast switch to the app when it is in another space.
    I have some individuals on my team at work who tend to edit multiple events on my calendar multiple times a day.  It makes me nuts that when I am in the middle of some serious debugging or in a groove jamming out some decent code, I get stopped constantly by iCal.

    I had exactly the same problem. A quick google search presented this:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20085680-263/keep-applications-from-stealin g-focus-when-opening-in-os-x/
    I've tried it - editing the Info.plist - and it works a treat. Note - it appears you can no longer cmd-tab to the app once you make this change. But I can live with that
    iCal developers - please, for the love of God and all things UX - please change this default behaviour. Or at least provide an option to make iCal less obnoxious. It was the focus stealing behaviour of Windows 95 that moved me away from Windows.

  • How to prevent apps from stealing focus?

    Often when I am running an application in the background, it will steal focus from my active window with a modal dialog box that will pop up in the foreground. Invariably, since I can be a fast typer sometimes, I won't be able to stop myself in time and will often cause the modal dialog box to take some unwanted action. This can have a HIGHLY unpleasant effect! Especially if I've just found myself aborting unintentionally a long job because of the focus stealing!
    I'd like to prevent any application from stealing focus from the active window. Is there any way to set OS X or the finder to prevent this? If not, are there any haxies that I can install that will have this effect?
    (For reference, Microsoft Vista Aero doesn't allow an application to open a window or dialogue above the active window, unless it's a UAC confirmation dialog, which still only opens on a different display layer.)

    YES AAAAAAAAAH THIS IS A REAL AGRESSION TO THE NERVES ! ! !
    I need to meet the dude who decided "hey wouldn't it be a great idea if we had the applications bothering you all the time as soon as they need your attention, instead of just letting you get to them whenever you feel like it ? now where's my promotion ? ^^"
    WHERE IS THIS MORON AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    does anyone know of a 3rd party software that would keep each app where it is whatever happens to it ?
    dammit

  • [SOLVED] Xfce4 shortcuts and focus

    Hi,
    I'm using Xfce4 with Compiz.
    I setup a keyboard shortcut in Xfce to start the terminal easily and it works fine. The only problem is, whenever I start the terminal via shortcut it does not get focused, it's the top window, but the window below still has the focus. The only time the shortcut method works is when the top window is already a terminal or if all windows are minimized.
    I noticed the same behaviour when calling thunar by shortcut. But if I call for example gcalctool or xfce4-appfinder, it works perfectly
    If I use the startup menu everything works fine as expected.
    Any help?
    Thanks

    Go to "Focus & Raise Behaviour" settings (ccsm --> General Options) and set focus stealing prevention to low or off there.

  • Tilda and kwin focus

    Hi,
    I have 2 instances of tilda ( the drop-down terminal ) running with my KDE desktop. One started as a normal user, and the other started with "sudo su" to have always a terminal ready for quick root access.
    So when I bring up the one which runs as root, it shows in front of other windows, which is the desired behavior.
    But when I bring up the one which runs as a normal user, it shows up behind the other windows, but in the taskbar it is selected as the active window. So every time show up tilda I need to circle with alt-tab to bring tilda to front, which is annoying.
    I have unchecked the always on top option in both instances, because sometimes I need to have tilda visible why I am working in an other window.
    Can somebody help me to configure kwin to show tilda in front of other windows when I bring it up? I have the focus stealing prevention set to low and set already a rule to disable focus stealing prevention for tilda, but doesn't helped.
    Thank you!

    Since you use KDE, why not use yakuake which is more native and powerful ?
    Yakuake supports tabs, and can be configured to show in front of other windows. It will never appear in your taskbar or Alt-Tab candicates.

  • How to set selected entity of a collection in the current, and publish it.

    Hi frnds,
      I have collection which contains n number of entities,
    now i am  filtering the collection and getting a unique entity.
    what i need is that i want to publish this entity as current.
    How can I set this filtered entity to the current?
    regards
    Ashraf.

    Hi Ashraf,
    You have to iterate the collection using the following methods first till you access the entity to which you want to change the
    focus.
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~GET_FIRST
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~GET_NEXT
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~GET_PREVIOUS
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~GET_LAST
    Once you reach the corresponding entity, the following method will give that entity when called.
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~GET_CURRENT
    Then you have to call the following method to publish this focus.
    IF_BOL_BO_COL~PUBLISH_CURRENT
    If you have already iterated to the unique entity in the collection, then you just need to do the publish_current.
    Regards,
    Leon
