Lowest QT vers. to play h264=??

Okay, i have OS 10.4.11, default QT 7.0. I opened an h.264 movie and got a white screen--it wouldn't play, even though i thought h264 was built into QT starting w/ ver. 7. Still, the get-info window at least said "h264".
So, i downloaded 7.1.6 and installed, restarted, and now i still get the white screen. But now, the video codec is blank in the get-info window (just a comma followed by the resolution). W-the-f---??
Why can i not play this h264 movie? (which btw plays just fine in VLC player 0.9.10). And, more interestingly, why does QT 7.1.6 fail even at identifying the codec when 7.0 did..?? Thanks.

Why can i not play this h264 movie?
To add to what Dave said, H.264 (MPEG-4/AVC) comes in many "flavors" -- some of which are open and some of which are proprietary. In addition, some codecs may incorporate the features/capabilities of one profile/level with those of another. And, since QT checks for such inconsistencies and won't play such non-standard files, it is possible the video is not QT compatible. The normal approach is to check the video profile and level and compare the standards against stats for the file as encoded.
Although AVI file container support was dropped more than a decade ago, it is still widely used by Windows users to contain both proprietary and open compression formats which may utilize either standard or custom features. (I.e., these files may or may not be natively compatible with QT and/or may require a third-party codec for playback.) As Dave indicated, the Perian component package may be your best bet here if the content can be played by the QT Player or iTunes (if you place the content in an MOV file container). NOTE: It is also important to read the Perian comments regarding component incompatibilities if you choose to install this package.

  • Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264 encoded videos on my 10.4.11 MacMini

    Hello:
This is my first post. I read through the forums and this seems to be the correct place to pose my question. If it's not, my apologizes.
I'm trying to find out why Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264-encoded video on my MacMini (G4 PPC). I'm running 10.4.11. I recently installed Perian 1.2.1 and it got some .avi files to play correctly, whereas before there was no sound. But the h264 files still get me a black screen, albeit with sound now. Some h264 files can be played in VLC Media Player (but that's a horrible player compared to Quicktime in my opinion, as it constantly drops frames and eats 100% of my processor time), but VLC even has the black screen problem on some h264 files as well.
I've also tried MPlayer OSX but that's really an alpha-type development and has a lot of bugs. Many movies it can't even open.
Sorry for the rambling, but again my question: Is there any way to play h264-encoded video in Quicktime 7.6.4 on my Mac?
Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice.

    Mr Ram,
There is a group of Quicktime specialists in Apple.com ⇒ Support ⇒ Discussions ⇒ Quicktime .
The more data you give us, the easier it is to help us help you to diagnose your problem. Your disk space would be very useful. Contrary to some, I advocate iDefrag to assist VLC and MPlayer, which you were a little hard on.
    GNU/Linux's free offerings
MPlayer was developed a decade ago, and I prefer it for viewing DVDs (for 'DVD Player') seems too dark. VLC (legally) copies many CRM-protected DVDs of yours, so you can play only the burned copy. When I'm having a problem playing a DVD, the VLC log tells me all: only perfect DVDs play well on VLC.
There are two ways of viewing everything.
    Streaming MPEG-4
+H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ is a fancy codec based upon MPEG-4: it requires a powerful processor to de-compress it. I watched an MPEG-4 movie from a G3 iBook in 2005. It played flawlessly.
    Your Problem
Quicktime 7.X applications can not play +H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ streams. It was a bug Apple never fixed. Frames are dropped because H.264 is so slow that it requires special hardware. You, I'm sad to say, don't have it.
To quote the Wikipedia on Quicktime: 'QuickTime 7 lacks support for H.264's Sample Aspect Ratio .[67] QuickTime X does not have this limitation; many Apple products (such as iTunes and Apple TV) still use the older QuickTime 7 engine.'
My Quicktime Pro on a PPC PowerBook is 7.6.4. You can either use a Linux transplant or upgrade to Quicktime X. Those more familiar with Macs may have better ideas for you.
    My best,
    Bruce

  • Best rendering settings to play h264 smoothly on a tablet?

I have fiddled around with the settings so much but just cannot find the right settings to render h264 video that will play smoothly on a tablet without pausing so much that it makes viewing pointless.  (I am using with JWPlayer, by the way.)
    Any suggesttions?

First off, a minor matter of terminology. In Premiere Pro, "rendering" typically refers to processing all or part of a timeline to yield smoother playback. I gather that what you're speaking of is exporting, also known as encoding.
Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder have about 50 presets tailored to encoding video for playback on tablets. Finding them through the Export Settings dialog can be a drag, so I recommend using AME's Preset Browser, which allows you to filter the whole preset library down to those of interest. In your case, search for "tablet" or perhaps "iPad." For more info about the power of AME's Preset Browser, see post #2 here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5950546#5950546

  • Vlc doesn't play H264 movies (matroska) [Solved]

    Hi @all,
back on arch with my laptop and I'm really enjoying the speed compared to debian!
And now arch supports full encrypted installations it is the perfect distro for me again.
Installation and configuring went smooth so far but now I have a little problem:
vlc can't play some video files which have the h264 codec. Mplayer and xine are playing the files just fine.
This is what vlc tells me:
[00000289] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `avc1'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

My best guess is FFMPEG. If you look at the dependencies for FFMPEG, you'll see that it spreads out through all sorts of different areas of Linux. If you upgrade X11, it may subtly break FFMPEG because of it's dependence on SDL. If you upgrade glibc, it may have an effect on zlib. And of course all of the multimedia dependencies...

  • QuickTime can't play H264+AAC file??

    I have a H264+AAC file,
it played on VLC player is ok,
but it can't play on QuickTime,
have any tool can detect what's wrong?
    is it incorrect file format?

Maybe you can learn a bit more about this mysterious movie. In quicktime (and probably VLC too) there is an Inspector (in Quicktime it's invoked by Window->Inspector or Command-I. It may provide more information about the nature of the video even if it's not playing normally.
If you can post a screen shot of an Inspector window maybe we can be more helpful.

  • What file format should I use if they can't play H264?

I output my final AE animations with the Animation codec for editing.
When I create a version of an animation for the client to review, I use the H264 codec. It looks good, and the file size is reasonable.
But what do I do if the client can't play videos with the H264 codec? This pops up with older computers, even if they have Quicktime 7 or higher.
(Worth noting - the Mac that I bought last August doesn't have Sorenson 3 on it. I don't know how to get that one back.)
    Best,

That's a good point, which probably explains why some of the OP's clients have problems when others don't.
For the purpose of others seeking to enable Quicktime Legacy Codecs, I should mention that Mike (the OP) contacted me off-Forum to enquire specifics on how to do so. The specifics are:
On a Mac, go to System Preferences/Quicktime/Advanced, and check the Legacy Codec box.
The same is accessible within Windows by launching Quicktime, then choose Edit/Preferences/Quicktime Preferences/Advanced.

  • Why can't I play h264 1080i video on my iPad?

I tried to play a H264 1080i video on my iPad & iPad mini devices (both of them are IOS-7), but only displayed black screen. I want to know if it is because IOS-7 doesn't support such kind of codec?

    Per Apple:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG‑4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • Cant play h264 or big format videos

    i have a old ibook g3 with 384ram and 900 mhz and run 10.4.9
but everything runs fine i have no problems with my computer only video

A G3 CPU just doesn't have enough power to play H.264 encoded video without dropping frames during playback.
Nothing much you can do. More RAM won't help and replacing your CPU and graphics card isn't worth the money spent.
If you see that H.264 is used just skip the page. Don't try any video purchases from the iTunes Music Store as they all use it. When viewing movie trailers pick the smallest dimensions.

  • Problem about playing h264 in flv file

I read an article at "
    http://www.kaourantin.net/2007/08/what-just-happened-to-video-on-web_20.html"
which is a blog of an software engineer of Adobe, the author said
in this article that "...There are functional limits with the FLV
structure when streaming H.264 which we could not overcome without
a redesign of the file format..." and "...Specifically dealing with
sequence headers and enders is tricky with FLV streams...", does
anybody know what exactly the author mean? what is the "functional
limits"? how to "specifically dealing with sequence headers and
enders"? is it a way to solve the "functional limits"?
    Thanks!

I believe that it just mean that H.264 encoded video for FMS
& Flash are not stored in FLV format... because of some
inherent limitations in FLV file format.
It uses mp4/MOV format which is what has been used by
Quicktime also for quite some time. Adobe calls it M4V.

  • Live streaming ( play && publish ) over rtmp/rtmfp with codecs ( h264 && PCMU ) on Android/iOS

I have a question: On what operating systems(android, ios) can be played and published stream with codecs H264 and PCMU with rtmp and rtmfp protocols(live streaming)?
As far as I found out with the codecs can be played on Android(rtmp protocol). On IOS video is not displayed, as I understood AIR environment cuting it.
Another question regarding video texture. Will be included in future releases support for live playing h264+PCMU on IOS?

On iOS, you'll need to be playing a HLS stream for h264 to decode when streaming from a remote server.

  • Videos will not play in Safari

I have an iPhone 3GS on the 3.1.2 OS, and cannot get videos to play in Safari. I've tried watching videos on ESPN's mobile site, as well as the TV Ads for the iPhone on Apple's website, and all that shows up is a screen full of code. Any assistance is much appreciated.

The iPhone will only play H264/Quicktime video and you're trying to watch Flash based video which is not supported. But just check the javascript option is ticked in the safari options.
    There is no workaround.
If you search the forum for 'flash' you will see plenty of threads on the subject. Flash will probably never be supported for the reasons therein - plenty to read up.

  • Encore wont play video files

I recently upgraded encore from ver.2 to cs3 and find that ver.cs3 wont play video files.
It wont play the file in the project window, it just stops at the first frame. If I move the slider below the viewer the video material is updated but it wont play.
In the monitor view it wont play either, I can view the material by manually moving the cursor.
It wont play a preview either, it just stops.
It builds a DVD without problems and the dvd plays fine without errors but the program wont play any video files.
Ver.2 plays all the same video files without problems.
    Please help!

    Whew!
Glad that you got it fixed, and thanks for posting what worked for you.
    Good luck with the interview,
