I have spent many a wasted hours chatting with a very polite person in India (SBC tech support) about my mail problem only to be assured - more than once - that all my settings are correct and it’s a mac problem.
So here it is:
My incoming mail server is: pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
I have my account password stored my mail program/keychain and sometimes mail manages to automatically access and download my email - just like you'd think it would. BUT then all of a sudden it doesn’t, and I get the error from mail:
The POP server “pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
I re-enter - or cancel and wait for the next scheduled auto-check and it happens again and again. Occasionally though it works. If I hit the 'Get Mail' button twice in a row its pretty likely to reject the password at least once.
Any ideas why this should be - or how I could stop it?

This issue may have more to do with your mail server rather than your Mac.
I too was afflicted with issue for over a week. I tried many fixes including, keychain repair, deleting my mail prefs and rebuilding my accounts by hand, toggling the interval button, shutting down and unplugging everything including AC power to my Mac. (btw -cancelling the message seemed to make it come back faster)
It was happening about half dozen times a day. Then one day it happened only 3 times, the next day twice, the next day once. Then gone! Fingers X'd it's 3 full weeks now without seeing it.
There is hope!
EDIT: As Max Miles says multiple computers can cause this. All are valid suggestions and may work in your cases.

Mac Mail with yahoo plus account difficultly with account reconditions and outgoing serving sending problems

I'm not exactly a techy. I have been having real trouble using YAHOO and now YAHOO PLUS with service useing the MAC MAIL application. This problem started a few weeks back in LION OS and I had apple support and the guys at the genuess bar give it shot and they always improved things but the problem persisted. I had apple care as recently as last night. After I got of the phone with the gentlemen I started having problems with the outgoing servier again. We even looked into the keychain for problems. This morning I downloaded OS 10.8 and MAIL is running better but yahoo is still buggy. Often either the password is not reconized or the outgoing mail can not be sent from the yahoo server. If I directly to yahoo.com and use their site I don't have this problem so it must be either a compadablity problem.

It can't be a software conflict, because Mail is only connecting to a mail server for Yahoo!, so there's no software conflict to be had.
Your profile says you're running 10.4.1, and the latest release of Tiger is 10.4.11; is there some reason you haven't updated to that version yet? By doing so, it will also update Mail to correct any bugs or security flaws that could be causing this problem.
Even if that's not the problem, you should try opening Mail while holding down the Shift key. Then Control-click in an empty area of your mailbox list pane and select Get Info from the contextual menu. A window will open and you should use the popup menu to select that Yahoo! Mail account and see if it will connect and tell you how many messages are there, and you should be able to download them from that window.
If that doesn't work, post back with your Yahoo! account settings for the incoming and outgoing mail servers.

.mac mail password (login) failure

Help ! As of yesterday my .mac mail no longer works on my desktop, and I am unable to access the incoming server settings in accounts (using apple mail) Does this perhaps have to do with the transition to iCloud? I moved months ago, and the mail still seems to be working om my iPhone 4, Sony tablet as well.
But not at my primary work computer, which is a decided hassle. Has this happened to anyone else recently? Sending this query from the Netherlands.

Email passwords are associated with the email account itself. If it's an iCloud Mail account, you can use http://iforgot.apple.com/.
For other email accounts, such as your ISP's email or the various "free" email services, you need to contact them.

Mac Mail password/ SMTP/ POP server issues

I have been using Mac Mail on my MacBook for many years. I have Yahoo Mail Plus POP mail. In the past several months I have had tons of problems, and keep resetting the password, POP & SMTP settings. This time, I can't even get past the password prompt popping up. It says I have the wrong password, but that is not the case. I have even removed the email account entirely from MacMail, and tried to set it back up from the beginning, but no luck.
I'm about to throw this thing out the window! Can anyone help??

The correct way is to use the exact settings provided by your ISP when you set up your account with them.

Mac Mail password rejected by POP server with ATT ISP

Just 2 months ago my ATT mail server keeps rejecting my email password that I use on apple mail as well as gmail. Now I can't use my apple mail application but the same email address with same password will work for web mail by gmail. I spent $ and hours with ATT connectech service without resolution except aggravation from different call centers repeating same old stories.
Problem: every time I use apple mail, it pops a message to re-enter password because my email address/Password is rejected by POP server. Same address/PW work for my gmail account.
I thought I post here before I have to pay Apple for trouble-shooting now that I am done with futile ATT support. I may never get a fix. I even try to migrate to Comcast but it has problem connecting to my house. I am at my wit's end. Thanks for reading.

Mac Mail rejects valid btinternet password

Ok, first off I have looked into this problem and came across a thread from a year or two ago that was incredibly long and was ultimately locked by someone from BT, on the assumption that the problem has been fixed. Evidently this is not the case.
I have happily had my mac Mail and my iPhone receiving email from my pop3 account for around 2 years. The other day I happened across a BT Openzone network and tried to connect using my btinternet email and password, however could not do so. This is the first time I have tried to do this as I have always used the 3G network when not at home. I was sure I was using the right password and so to check, I tried to log onto the BT Yahoo website (something I have never needed to do). Again, I could not log on and so assumed I had forgotten my password. I was dubious because I don't forget passwords, but assumed I had, at some point, created a random alternative password for my mail account.
I therefore tried to reset my password but apparently failed the security questions because it asked me to call them up. I did, and the password was reset, allowing me to log onto the BT Yahoo website as well as the BT Openzone network.
Here's where it gets annoying. Upon opening up mac Mail, I was presented with the box to enter my password and thought this was perfectly logical, seeing as I had now changed it. I entered in the correct password and lo and behold, the password was rejected. Several more attempts brought me no success either.
I have looked up other people's issues on this and understand it is a frequent problem, and so tried some of their solutions such as deleting and recreating the account (during creation there is a warning saying it can't connect to the server), and resetting the router (no help). One thing that did work is logging into the BT Yahoo website which fixes the issue on my mac Mail client and allows me to send/receive emails again....strange.
A lot of people say they have had this issue on and off in the past few years but that's where I differ. I have had mail working perfectly since I set it up. The only thing that has changed from before to now, is that I changed my account password. Changing the mac mail password to the same one should mean it is in exactly the same situation as before.
Does anyone have any useful information to help remedy this issue (preferably someone from BT themselves?)

I have no idea why, but I think this may have just solved my problem. Got rid of the capitals in my password and changed the mail setting accordingly, and so far it hasn't rejected it. My guess is there's some issues between the encryption algorithms used by mac mail and the BT servers, and capital letters screw that up somehow.
Any chance you could link me to that apple forum where you found that post? Thanks for your help! Strange fix, but seems to have worked

.Mail - password request and failure

Starting yesterday .Mail began asking for my password when logging on to .Mac. Now the app will not check or send mail to my .Mac account. It works fine with gMail. The .Mac account is grayed out and a small symbol next to the account appears, looking like a lightning bolt.
Mail can be used by accessing .Mac mail with Safari.

I experienced the same problem yesterday and it seems Apple had some major issues with all servers yesterday for a good while - including servers for the Apple Store and these Discussions.
It cleared up for me late yesterday afternoon.
Have you tried taking the account online or does quitting and re-launching the Mail application make any difference today?

I need to change the hyperlink in my mac mail signature. I go to remove it and edit and the old one is still there despite copying in a new one. Help!

Mac mail and gmail are not syncing

I just bought my very first mac computer, the MacBook Pro. I set up my Mac Mail to my gmail account. My gmail account won't sync up to my macmail though. All the messages are there as well as my contacts and the mac mail receives new emails when I get them, however they are not synced up. For example, when I delete a message in mac mail, it doesn't delete on my gmail account and vice versa. How do I get it so the two are synced?

I am having same issue. This is a new development as I don't recall it doing this before. I was using the delete button in mail and this would archive the message (my desired behavior)...
not sure why there aren't moving out of gmail's inbox...is it possible Google is working on something behind the scenes?
Fixed this one issue (at least for my setup)...
It's a little misleading but it's the advanced imap settings in gmail's settings that was throwing me off...
Under the the "expunge" settings
x Immediately expunge messages when I mark them deleted in IMAP
Do not automatically expunge messages
Makes the "delete" button in Mail "archive" the message and move it to "All Mail"

Makes the "delete" button in Mail remove it from the folder in Mail, but not in Gmail, unless it's a message that is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder, then it goes by the second set of settings (archive, trash, delete immediately) that are only available if "do not automatically expunge messages" is chosen...

Does mac mail sync with ipad and iphone mail?

upgraded to mountain lion and i thought if i delete/read a email on mac mail then it would also delete/read on ipad and iphone but it will not. can i correct that?

Can anyone help me in regards to how i can find out what my frgotten mac mail password is?
I purchased a domin nae email from cheapdomains.com.au and ever since i set it up on my mac mail (in march) it has never worked properly.
I could receive emails but when i replied it sent from my old hotmail account.
I tried changing the outgoing server and nothing has worked. i tried contating cheap domains to which their solutions did not work.
I tried contacting my ISP and still that did not work. Also tired mac australian tech support... and still nothing.. its so frustrating as this is an email account that I need for my business..

It is possible that the password is in your Keychain.
Go to your Utilities folder (inside the Applications folder) and launch Keychain Access.
Under Keychains on the left select login.
Then under Category select passwords.
Look for your email account in the names and when you find it double click on it.
Select the Attributes tab in the dialog that comes up.
Check the Show password: checkbox and authenticate with your computer's login password when prompted.
The password as the computer remembers it will appear.

Trouble connecting using Mac mail for Office 365

Microsoft says OS 10.9.4 is not supported for an exchange mail account for Mac Mail. I'm using OSX 10.9.4 and Mac Mail 7.3 and previously had an exchange account but upgraded to Office 365 through my workplace. I was able to send and receive but now the connection doctor is saying the Exchange account "Could not connect to this Exchange server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab.
The problem I've having as well is that the emails are not saved in my sent folder. The only settings that haven't been updated are under the 'Advanced' settings which are: Internal Server Path, Internal Port, External Server Path, External Port.

You need Lion for iCloud which it should warn you when you do the me.com/move routine.

Firefox has stopped forwarding my mail to my Mac Mail.

I had to change my Firefox password lately, so that it does not match my Mac Mail password. Then Firefox stopped forwarding my mail to my Mac Mail box.

Also make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

I have macbook air using mac mail to send/receive, i config two account POP and IMAP. Account POP using normal but account IMAP is regular error.
Mail is still received but attachments don't be read
I was deleted account IMAP and reconfig, Create new user profiles and reconfig IMAP account but don't fix error.

Is this POP account provided by your ISP? Is there an online link where the ISP provides info about how to set up their email account?
In Mail, it is necessary to know whether the mail server expects the Username to be the portion of the email address in front of the "@", or the entire email address -- here we are talking about the entry block for Username, and not Email Address. If you are only entering the username portion, try the whole email address -- if you are using the latter, currently, try only the username portion.
Access of the POP3 mail server, with Mail, uses only the Username and password, so the form of Username is critical.

Mac Mail Alias

Hi all. I've just switched over from PC to Mac and am getting there, but still not quite there.
I've set up Mac Mail to work with my Hotmail account - ***@hotmail.com and it works great. No problems there. I'm now trying to set up an alias for ***@Rockfax.com. The Rockfax servers bounce any emails sent to ***@hotmail.com to my ***@hotmail.com account. This currently works fine with Mac Mail, no problems there.
However I can't currently send emails from ***@Rockfax.com. In a perfect world I'd get all the emails sent to both accounts to arrive in one Inbox where I can sort them (as is currently happening) but when I sent mail I'd get an option to either send it from ***@Rockfax.com or ***@hotmail.com.
Is that possible using Mac mail? I've tried following the apple alias help page and have gone into - Mail - Preferences - Email address and added in the line '***@hotmail.com, ***@Rockfax.com' . This gives me the option when sending mail to use '***@hotmail.com' - which is exactly what I'm after. However when the person recieves the mail it still says it has been sent from '***@hotmail.com.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I don't mind setting up a gmail or other equivalent email system. I just want it to appear as though I'm sending emails from ***@Rockfax.com

I set up an "other" account on my phone, as you can't change settings in the .Mac type of account.
Go into your iPhone's Settings -> Mail -> Add Account -> Other, then used the following settings:
IMAP Account Information
Name: Myname
Address: [email protected]
Description: [email protected]
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: mail.mac.com
User Name: [email protected]
Password: mydotmacpassword
Outgoing Mail Server
Host Name: smtp.mac.com
User Name: mymacid (note without the @mac.com)
Password mydotmacpassword
...you can either turn off or delete your existing .Mac account on your iPhone.
This way you're using exactly the same settings as a default .Mac account, but you can specify the return address in there.
