MacBook Air iPad Development

Hi everyone,
I'm sure you can classify this under the "Newbie" section, but I can't seem to find a response anywhere:
I'm thinking of getting a MacBook Air for developing iPad apps with. Is this a powerful enough machine, or should I go with the MacBook Pro instead? I travel a lot and the extra weight may be a factor at times.
My company wants me to put in a request for whatever I need sometime today if possible, so any answers would be great.
Thanks!
Nat.

Hi Nat, and welcome to the Dev Forum!
I've never developed on a MacBook Air, but I've spent lots of time happily developing on a MacBook. I also tend to read lots of online blogs and forums. I've never heard or read anything to the effect that a MBA can't run Xcode, Interface Builder, the iPhone or iPad simulator, or any of the other important dev tools. I think the consensus is that any Intel Mac which can run OS X 10.5.4, won't have a problem with the dev tools.
That said I've read some complaints about inconveniences. Most of these are either about the screen size or the response time for features like code completion in the Xcode source code editor. If I needed a portable dev environment, I can't imagine comparing any of these complaints to light weight and increased battery life. Maybe the writers didn't travel much.
I don't know if the MBA has any RAM options besides 2GB. If it does, try to get 4 (unless you find out that will significantly impact battery life). But I think you'll do just fine with 2.

  • I have a macbook air/ipad/phone, etc.  I use my macbook for my home business and bought a TC.  My husband does not want it to be our default wifi.  Does it have to be?

I have a macbook air/ipad/phone, etc.  I use my macbook for my home business and bought a TC to do backups.  My husband does not want it to be our default wifi/modem as he is exclusively a PC user.  Does it have to be?  I thought it did everything wirelessly??  I don't want to start disconnecting our modem/router etc as we are all set up with wireless printing and backups for that computer.  If I have to muck around with it I am thinking of not bothering??

The TC will connect to your existing modem/router using an Ethernet cable. You will not have to use the wireless on the TC....you can even turn it off if you wish.
Backups to the TC will occur over your existing wireless.
Connect from a LAN <-> port on the modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the TC. Locate the TC anywhere that the Ethernet cable will reach. You can run the cable up to 300 feet with no loss.
Things will not automatically configure themselves. You will have to do some mucking around....no more than you would if you were installing the TC anywhere else.
Configure the TC to "create a wireless network". Once it is setup, you can ignore the TC wireless, or turn it off.

  • In hotel w/wireless network.  ATV finds network, but does not ask me for password, so can't communicate through network.  MacBook Air, iPad and 2 iPhones connected to hotel wireless, but ATV does not ask me for the password.  Any ideas?

I have succesfully connected a MacBook Air, an iPad and two iPhones to the wireless network in this hotel.  Apple TV can see the network and "connects" to the network, but w/o asking for password.  I expected to see a screen immediately after selecting the network that asked me for the password as did all of my other devices.  ATV did not ask me for a password.  When I go to Settings>General>Network, it shows the name of the hotel wireless network, but I can't communicate with the network.  It can't set date and time.  When I try to enter my Apple account name and password, it tells me it can't log in w/o setting date and time.
Any ideas on how to connect to this network?

I am having the same problem. In my hotel when I connect my laptop a screen will pop up and you have to hit the button "I Accept Terms". However I can't do that with the ATV. I called the internet provider and they said they could not help me. Any ideas? Do you think the guy just doesn't know what he can do for me? I am thinking I will call later and hope to get a different technician who might know how to help connect me.

  • Syncing Outlook across Macbook Air, iPad and Iphone

Anything entered into my MacBook Air Outlook calendar does not appear on my iPad or iPhone 5s but what I add to the iPhone syncs with the iPad and vice versa. iCloud enabled on all three; all updates installed. This has happened ever since I switched from Windows laptop to MacBook, which is still only months old. I've tried the help sections, looked at the iCloud, can't see what to do next.

    Hi mebjk,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It appears that iCloud is not syncing your iCloud calendar between your Mac and iOS devices.
I know it can be frustrating when features don't work as expected, and I have a few articles to share that can help.
First, make sure you're signed in to iCloud on your devices, and the calendar syncing feature is turned on. You can find some helpful steps regarding iCloud setup at this links:

  • I have an macbook air and iPad 2. Then I upgraded to OS X YOSEMITE everything when downhill . it will not finish downloading and could not even used my FaceTime . Help pls.

    To Whom It May Concern,
I have a MacBook Air, Ipad 2 everything was fine. Then I upgraded it to OS X Yosemite , everything when downhill, can not even use FaceTime . i have tried everything. Can somebody help me out on this please. Thank you.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Looking for a bluetooth headphone for my Macbook Air and Ipad Mini, I am not looking for a headphone that needs a transmitter to be connected to the source rather a headphone that can be connected directly via bluetooth to the source device

I am desperately looking for a bluetooth headphone that would be compatible to my Macbook air and Ipad mini both. I am more of looking for a headphone that does not need a transmitter device to be connected to the source (in this case Macbook Air and Ipad Mini) and headphone acting as a receiver, rather need a headphone that would be connected directly via bluetooth to the source, it would be great if multiple apple devices be connected simultaneously. Please suggest some good headphones.

Hey sorry for the late reply, I was busy to figure out alternatives as harman kardon was a difficult affair to find and acquire, but the good news is I managed to get hold of alternative.
Sony I assume recently launched a Bluetooth headphone DR-BTN200 which is compatible to my MacBook Air , iPad mini and android phone galaxy s2 with ease, the sound quality is pretty good as compared to other brands of Bluetooth headphones I checked compatible or incompatible to apple devices alike, this is definitely what I was looking for, costed me 7990 INR, this is highly recommended for ppl who are confused, I carried my devices to the store and checked before I bought a pair and pretty much happy,
The best part of this is its battery backup, I have used this hours for 3-5 days but this has not drain even then, but I do keep this charging once in 2-3 days just to keep this ready otherwise it does not even ask for it neither the quality of sound drops after 2-3 days of use.
This is over the ear headphone which is very soft but it's get sweaty around the ear I guess that's bound to happen.
Do get back to me for any other details, would be glad to share with all :)

  • Wireless printer, iPad, MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air, iPad one, Brother 5520dw wireless printer, and an HP PC Desktop. How can I get the wireless to work for my MacBook and iPad?? The Brother printer is not on the list of supported AirPrint printers. is this a job for Printopia or Print N Share or another app?

    Hi Dagnabit47,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue adding a wireless printer on your MacBook Air. The article linked below will walk you through the process of adding the printer and ensure the MacBook Air setup correctly.
OS X Mavericks: Set up a printer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14143
    Add a Wi-Fi printer
Follow the instructions that came with the printer to connect it to your Wi-Fi network and turn it on. Use the instructions to unpack the printer, install ink or toner, and add paper. For more information, see this article:
Apple Support article: Connecting a Wi-Fi printer to your Wi-Fi network
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure OS X has the latest information about printer software it can download from Apple. If Software Update doesn’t list an update for your printer, you have the latest software.
Open a document to print, then choose File > Print.
Open the Printer pop-up menu and choose your printer in the Nearby Printers section of the menu. If you don’t see your printer, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu.
A dialog appears listing printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear.
If you’re asked for an administrator name and password
Select your printer when it appears in the list, and then click Add. OS X automatically uses AirPrint if your printer supports it, or it selects printer software (also called a printer driver) and downloads it from Apple if necessary.
    I hope this helps.

  • Does my Macbook Air need a power converter in the UK?

I am traveling to the UK soon - will I need a power converter for my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone?
    thanks

Input voltage for iPad and iPhone is same. 100 -240 Volts.
You will need plug adapters for those power adapters.
    No converters are necessary.

  • Anyone own Mac Mini and MacBook Air?

Looking for shopping advice from people owning a particular configuration of Apple devices.
I currently have a white MacBook and iPad.
Thinking of upgrading/shifting to one of these configurations:
    1. 15" MacBook Pro, iPad
    2. 15" MacBook Pro, iPhone
    3.  Mac Mini/iMac, 11" MacBook Air, iPad
    4.  Mac Mini/iMac, 11" MacBook Air, iPhone
    5.  13" MacBook Air, iPad
    6.  13" MacBook Air, iPhone
My question is mostly about options 3 and 4 but open to any advice suggestions people have for those 6 options. The main question is to people that own a Mac Mini (or iMac) and an 11" Air. Do you feel that the desktop/very portable laptop combo balances out well?
I am a professor at a liberal arts college. I regularly keep open Mail, Skype, iChat, Reeder, Things, Notational Velocity, iCal, Safari, Dictionary, iTunes, and then when I'm working on a specific task I run Numbers (with 4 spreadsheets open), Pages (with 3 or 4 pages open), Keynote (with a few open), or separetly I hobby in Coda, XCode, GarageBand, R, usually one at a time.

I own a 13 Macbook Air, and iPhone 3GS and have a Mac Mini at my office.  I love the options these devices give to me.  I sync everything with MobileMe and iDisk, but there are certainly more options available.

  • Macbook Air won't recognize HP Envy printer

Just bought an HP  Envy so that I could print easily from Macbook Air, iPad and iPhone.  Starting with Macbook Air.  Both are connected to the web via Airport Extreme.  Can add printer to Air via IP address, but it really doesn't see it and won't print.

Are the printer drivers installed? You should not use the drivers from CD as they are alyas old.
If the driver inn't installed, plug the printer in via USB and go to the Apple menu and select Software Update. That should install the software.
If that fail, you may need to call HP to see if the printer is indeed connected to the Airpot network properly. You should not have to set it up by IP address. It should should show up as Bonjour.

  • How can I make sure fonts in a Keynote presentation developed on iMac will show/match when transferring the presentation to MacBook Air?

It would seem (to me) this should not be an issue, but I have an iMac and MacBook Air with the identical version of OS (10.7.4) and Keynote ('09 5.1.1).  Yet, the fonts don't match.  Fonts I would regularly use when developing the presentation on the iMac do not transfer (create "Review" errors) to the Air.  How can I fix it so that all the fonts on iMac show on Air?

If I am understanding your question correctly what you are wanting to achieve is not possible. You can't run the same keynote presentation on both devices at the same time. Also, why would you want to use the small screen size of the iPhone as your display instead of the iPad? If it is just to see your presenter notes then print them out and use the iPhone as your remote.
Perhaps more info is needed so i fully understand your issue.
