Macbookpro doesn't recognize max resolution of an external display

hi
i have a macbook pro 7.1
i just bought an external display, LG IPS237L-BN 23 inch Full HD IPS LED Widescreen Monitor (250 cd/m2, 1920 x 1080, 5000000:1, D-sub, HDMI)
my mac doesn't seem to recognize the resolution. after some internet research, it seems to be a common problem, except that all i've seen are some solutions via dvi port. My monitor has only 2 hdmi (from what i can tell, i'm no expert), and some "d-sub", whatever that is.
I've had a small mdp adapter, connecting via hdmi-to-hdmi cable to the monitor, but to no success. I thought it may be the prob with the adapter as i've bought it a while back, so i went and got  a mdp-to-hdmi cable (this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00675Q2UY/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8 &psc=1), but again, the max resolution in display preferences is 1600x900, and all is blurred, while my main purpose is photo and video work.
Any advice?

Hi
did you found the solution?
I have MBP 7.1 too, and just bought an LG 22" FullHD monitor, but i got the same problem.
I can set the resolution to 1920x1080 but the screnn on external display is not like fullHD, and its not as colorful as it can be(I tried the monitor with my windows laptop, and the colors and resolution was ok).
I'm using Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to connect them.
Help me if you can!
Many thanks,
nelsonhun

As i had said, I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board? Is there a Fn key combo i'm missing or is the issue more serious then i realize? any and all help and hints would be greatly apprichiated, thanks in advance.

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.
EDIT: Yes! Found a pdf of the PB manual it shows F7 is the toggle:

  • W540 : What is the maximum resolution of an external display?

    I have the thinkpad w540

Where, where! does it tell me the maximum resolution of an external display using the displayport.
    Thanks.
    Solved!

Have a look at the specifications:

Via the Thunderbolt port, you'll get a maximum of 3840x2160 (sometimes called "4K") at a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

  • Resolution problem on external display on Macbook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Hi there guys. I recently bought a 23inch Dell Ultrasharp display for my 15inch Macbook pro.
Max resolution I can get from the screen is 1080p. Althought, I've noticed a weird thing.
After using my screen for like 2 and a half weeks, when I started my Macbook today the external monitor had a fixed 600x800 resolution which I couldn't change from the display menu on system prefs. Actually, I don't even get any resolution options when I choose the scaled radio button. So I can't do anything.
I can't reset pram cause obviously command+option+p+r don't work regardless the way I press them (i just get the recovery screen).
And its the same thing on windows as well (using bootcamp), fixed resolution and no option to change it.
Thing is that I updated my Macbook's ram from 4 to 8gigs from crucial. At first everything was fine but again after a restart this occured again.
I opened the case and used one 4gig from crucial and the default 2gig from apple. It worked for the screen and I got back to max resolution.
Then put the 8gigs again, worked fine for 2.5 weeks and now this again.
Do you think that this has anything to do with ram or its just Mountain Lion?
    Looking forward for your help!!!
    Many Thanks, Thanos.
(forgot to mention, I'm using a minidisplay to display port cable)

    Give this a shot.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

  • Resolution choices for external displays

    Hello there,
is there any way I can modify the resolutions to choose from for an external display? The closest I can get is 1360x768, the native being 1366x768. The display has been detected properly (shows the name).
    Thanks

  • ¿Can be a better resolution in the external display?

I recently buy a new LCD ViewSonic 22" full HD (its declared to support 1920X1080) and Im very happy with my acquisition. Now I can work in a large screen with Page and Final Cut Pro but still I feel it can be a better resolution in the bigger display the same as in the little 13" in my MBP 7.1 Indeed the display resolution it's 1080p in the LCD and 1280X800 in the little screen. I would like to ask if I did the right settings and if not what can I do? If it is possible of course.
    Thanks in advance
    Josef Carel

No worries man .. your concern is known as pixel width or pixels per square inch..
you do the maths by multiplying horizontal inches with vertical inches of your display
that's your display area in square inches ..
    and then you multiply 1920 x 1080 ..
that's your total number of pixels
when you divide the area to the number of pixels you get pixels per inc
and the higher the value the smaller each individual pixel therefore harder for your eye to spot them resulting in smoother display ..
That's why I've advised you the 22 inch display in the first place and I'm sure now you appreciate the advice more

  • Changing resolution for vizio external display

I just got a Vizio 37" lcd. It is hooked up to my g4 12" powerbook and looking pretty great except that it seems a bit stretched out from left to right. The users manual says I need to "set my pc computer timing mode to VESA 1366X768 at 60 Hz." I'm assuming they're talking about resolution so I've set my powerbook for 1024x768. It doesn't appear that I can go as high as 1366x768.
Is this the case? Is this what is causing the slight "stretched out" appearance?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I bought an ASUS WQHD Monitor and I use an MicroHDMI Adapter to HDMI and I can run full resolution of 2560x1440.

  • How can I set the resolution of my external display to 1280x800?

Hi, I'm using a Wacom Cintiq 12WX external pen tablet display with a 24" iMac.
The recommended resolution for this Cintiq is 1280x800. But when I go to System Preferences>Displays set the resolution of the display, the only available options for "Wacom Cintiq 12WX" are:
    640x480
    800x600
    832x624
    848x480
    1024x768
1024x768 is my nearest option, but it has a different proportion than the display's physical shape--resulting in a slightly stretched display. Because I work with graphic design, this is not exactly desirable...
None of the other resolutions have the same proportion as 1280x800, so a stretch seems inevitable; not even working with a smaller resolution will give me the desired ratio.
So my question is, is there any way to choose resolutions other than those listed in the "Display tab" of System Preferences?
I also noticed that I have the option to rotate the tablet screen 90 degrees; when I do this, the option 800x1280 becomes available, but of course it's sideways...
Any help at all would be very greatly appreciated!

    Thank you for your help.
I installed the update you suggested, but nothing has changed in my Cintiq 12WX Display menu in System Preferences.
    Which update ?
The OSX update or the driver update or both ?
Might be neccessary to reinstall the Wacom driver after the OSX update.
And I concur with Kenichi, if all things fail contact the Wacom Support.
That thing has to work as advertised.
    Good Luck

  • Late 2010 Unibody MacBook -- Resolution problems with external display...

    Hi Apple Community,
I have a late 2010 white unibody which I've been using with my 30" LCD TV, both as a secondary monitor and in clamshell mode. I connect with an apple display to hdmi cable. I've been using this setup for a few months and it has always looked FANTASTIC. Never any issues. Then out of the blue, just the other day, the resolution on my 30" had become all screwed up. Now it is very pixelated, color and resolution are all off, and everything lags.
What I've tried so far: I've checked all the display settings in system prefs. Res set to 1080i, color calibration is set to factory settings, etc. I restarted multiple times, with the monitor connected and without. I rebooted in safe mode to reset all display settings to factory. I've checked my cords, used the secondary hdmi port on my TV, messed with display settings on the television and still NOTHING.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why this suddenly started happening. Any suggestions would be greatly greatly GREATLY appreciated! (I had to watch Game of Thrones on my computer screen! My 13" computer screen! Oh! The indignity!)
    Thank you all in advance!
PS - I run Lion and all software is up to date!

  • Is it possible to choose a custom resolution for an external display?

I've hooked my iMac up to my Toshiba HDTV and would like to have 1:1 pixel mapping but the iMac has no 1366 x 768 resolution option in the menu. Is there a hack that could make this possible?

I'm having kind of the same trouble with mine now. Before when I chose mirroring, the iMac would stick with 1680 x 1050. After installing (then uninstalling) SwitchResX, I choose mirroring and the iMac changes to the same resolution as the TV!

  • If I run a second monitor from an iMac, will I be able to achieve a resolution of 1928x1080 which is the max resolution of my second monitor?

I am changing to an iMac later this year. At the moment I run a Sony Vaio all-in-one and use a second monitor with it. Although the resolution of the second monitor is 1928x1080, I can only get it to work at a max of 1680x1050 so it's a bit fuzzy.
My question is, when using an iMac, will it be able to support the additional monitor at its max 1928x1080?
    Thanks

You are only limited by what the maximum resolution is on the external display. Look at it's specifications, then when you have connected it to your iMac look at System Preferences - Diplays - Display tab and choose the resolution on the external display.
BTW please complete your profile. It's difficult to assist you without knowing anything about your iMac. Much like asking Sally Ormond for financial advice and not telling her anything about your financial situation.

  • T400s max resolution for external monitor ?

    Hello
What is the max resolution for an external monitor connected to a thinkpad t400s  ? The reason i am asking is that:
    a) Intel says:  the max resolution of Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD is 2048x1536
    b) Lenovo says:  DisplayPort + D-sub dual-display output support 2560×1600 maximum resolution
What are your experiences and what maximum resolutions on external monitors have you succesfuly tried in real life ?
Would it be possible to connect a 30" monitor at 2560x1600  to a thinkpad t400s ?

i don't know and i never tried but i'm inclined to trust intel more than lenovo on this...unless the t400s has some beefed-up x4500mhd

  • Macbook doesn't recognize external display

I am trying to use my tv as an external display. My Intel Macbook doesn't detect my tv as an external display, this is because I am using an unconventional connector (VGA to RCA connector).
Anyways, I am wondering if there is a way to force my laptop to output video over the mini-DVI out port on my computer. I am thinking a utility or something would be able to do it.
    This is my setup:
    mini-DVI out from computer>
mini-DVI to VGA cable from apple>
VGA to RCA(yellow video cable) (from hong-kong)>
AV in of TV (RCA yellow video cable)
I realize that the VGA to RCA makes my computer not detect my tv, I am looking for a work-around.
    Macbook 2.0GHz (White)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You just need the Apple mini-DVI to video adapter. It has both a composite and s-video output.

  • Intel iMac won't recognize external display with Dynex mini-DVI adapter

I've got an original Intel iMac with a Mini-DVI connection on the back. I'm attempting to hook it up to an external display (a plasma screen, in fact). I picked up a Dynex Mini DVI to Video Adapter DX-AP100 for Apple. This connector has a mini-DVI connector on one end, and both a video-out and an S-video-out on the other.
When attempting to use the adapter, the iMac does not recognize that there is an external display connected. Here are the facts:
The external display: I've tried this with a Panasonic Plasma screen connected directly through S-video, as well as a Pioneer receiver (one that switches video) connected both through s-video and composite video. And yes, I've got the settings on the TV correct. I've also tried this with a Polaroid LCD TV connected via S-video and composite video.
I did notice that when I click "Detect Displays" while the Plasma was connected, the plasma briefly "flashed", implying SOMETHING was happening, but still no dice.
Anyone have any experience with this Dynex DX-AP100 that could share some wisdom?

Yeah, I realize S-video is limiting, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. The TV is mounted to the wall and there are not currently any DVI or HDMI cables coming out of it. There's an S-video input from my receiver that I'd prefer to use since it's readily accessible already. In the end my goal is to use Netflix "Watch Now" on the TV, so I'm not too worried about video quality.
and before someone asks if I considered that the receiver's S-video input might be the problem...I tried taking the s-video wire from the stereo and plugging it directly into the adapter. No dice.
ONE ADDITIONAL PIECE of information...while trying to get this to work on an LCD monitor, I plugged the composite video connection from the TV into the adapter. Suddenly the Mac recognized an additional monitor, but it saw it as a VGA monitor, not as s-video or composite video, and no signal went to the TV.
I'm considering trading in this adapter for a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, but that really won't help me with the connection to the TV.
