Does this information help anybody?
"Crashes: A surprisingly high number of users are reporting repeated crashes after updating to iWeb '08.
Ironically, it appears that many of the crashes can be resolved by removing the file ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain. In essence, it looks like iWeb '08 is choking on the sites file created by older versions of iWeb. So move this file to a separate location, and try launching iWeb '08 again."

awesome! I'll give that a try almost immediately!
hope i can solve my "blinking qestion mark folder" issue that way ...

  • Macfixit Guide to Installing an Upgrade like 10.4.8

    http://macfixit.com/
Update procedure recommendation We recommend the following procedure when installing Mac OS X 10.4.8.
First, avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring. In addition, before installing this security update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.8 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted.
Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.8 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.
Common workarounds If you have problems after applying the delta (standard, smaller) update, try the following common workarounds:
Delete kernel extension caches, other caches for some issues A number of common issues that crop up after incremental Mac OS X updates can be resolved by deleting specific cache files -- specifically kernel extension caches -- and restarting.
This can most easily be accomplished with a shareware utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner, but also bears a manual process which involves dragging the following files to the trash:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
    Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
    Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
    com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
You will be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. You may need to restart after moving them to the trash.
Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater A workaround that has proved successful for various problems caused by previous incremental Mac OS X updaters is re-application of the current combination updater(PowerPC or Intel). Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files that were not replaced by the "Delta" (adjacent version-to-version) update.
Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater from an alternate startup volume
Download and save the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater (PowerPC or Intel).
Startup from an alternate boot volume, such as an external FireWire drive, or use another Mac to boot the problematic system in FireWire target disk mode (connect the two machines via a FireWire cable, and boot the target [problematic] system while holding down the "T" key)
Once booted from an alternate drive, select the problematic volume in the Finder, and "Get Info" -- either by pressing the Command-I keyboard combination or accessing the "Get Info" option in the File menu. Check the box marked "Ignore ownership permissions on this volume."
If you have a third-party disk repair utility like DiskWarrior, use it to re-build the directory on the problematic volume (this step may not be necessary)
Re-install the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater on the problematic drive.
Re-attempt booting from the problematic volume (hold down the option key at startup to select the desired drive)
Downgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.7 If you are experiencing severe, seemingly insoluble issues after the update, you can revert to Mac OS X 10.4.7 per the instructions:
Mini-Tutorial: Reverting to an earlier version of Mac OS X
When problems materialize in conjunction with an incremental update to Mac OS X, and all known workarounds have failed, or a critical issue appears that must be resolved immediately, it may be necessary to perform a reversion process and backpedal to the prior incremental version.
The process is somewhat time-consuming and will require you to restore some previous settings, but relatively straightforward. Also, note that you will need to be using Mac OS X 10.2.x or later for this process.
First, make a backup of your current Mac OS X installation, problematic as it may be. If there is a problem along the way, your valuable data will be safely intact in its current form.
Next, you'll need to perform an Archive and Install process to remove all of your current Mac OS X version's vital (and potentially problem-causing) components, and replace them with the components of a fresh copy provided by the Mac OS X disc that shipped with your system, or a retail Mac OS X disc. Unfortunately, this means you will lose some system settings and some or all third-party system add-ons.
To begin the process, insert your Mac OS X CD or DVD, as indicated above. Restart your machine and hold down the "C" key to boot from the newly inserted disc. Follow the on-screen instructions, and after accepting the license agreement, click "Options." Select "Archive and Install," and check the "Preserve User and Network Settings" option if you'd like to do so.
After the installation process is complete, you will be left with an earlier version of Mac OS X that (hopefully) does not suffer from the problems generated by the incremental Mac OS X update in question. However, you will likely want to bring your installation back up to the point of revision right before you started having problems. For instance, if you updated to Mac OS X 10.3.4 and began experiencing problems, you probably want to re-situate your system at Mac OS X 10.3.3. This simply requires re-applying the appropriate Mac OS X combo updater.
Various updates, back through Mac OS X Combo Update 10.2.5, are available from Apple's Support Download page.
Restore your settings and appropriate third-party software, and you will find your system with approximately the same status as prior to the problematic incremental update.
Your old system will be stored in folder called "Previous Systems" at the root level of your startup volume. If you would later like to delete this folder, you may need to change its permissions.

awesome! I'll give that a try almost immediately!
hope i can solve my "blinking qestion mark folder" issue that way ...

  • Will these macfixit beta customizations/tweaks still work for the final?

    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090225234804752
    Only recent comment:
Now that the final Safari 4 is out, some of these settings no longer have any effect. I think, for instance, that Apple has simply yielded on the tab-bar-relocation business.
    Anyone know any more?

    Thanks.

  • MacFixit report revisited...

I use a PM G5, my wife jhas a MacBook Pro - the following issues all pointed out at MacFixit have affected both our computers.
    MS Office apps won't open
No Flash playback in Safari or Firefox
Reverse fonts in Safari - many [not all] sites show text as backwards -
In Pages some documents would open with a completely different set of fonts
Before reading most of these posts, I had uninstalled quicktime from my computer altogether - and downloaded a fresh copy of ver. 7.1.6 - error says I cannot intstall over a newer version..... meanwhille there is not a stitch of Quicktime on my system except the new download of 7.1.6.
in the meantime I am going to try the remedy offered by CodyMR on the MacBook Pro.

this worked for me and others (I have an intel mac), but since problem occurred after QT update, should work for powerpc too?- not sure which you had. just make sure QT 7.1.6 is for the right model. the combo update for os 10 is for both powerpc and intel:
From the Mac discussion forums: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4930170&#4930170
Try this: download and retrofit (force install) QT 7.1.6 using Pacifist, then run the 10.4.10 Combo Updater for Intel Macs. Make sure it is the "combo" updater. Be sure to restart in safe mode after using Pacifist and then install/re-install the combo update (while in safe mode). For all those "non-techie" people (like myself), please try this if you already haven't and please read the instructions for Pacifist - if you use Pacifist correctly, it will ask you if you want to replace (vs. update) all of the Quicktime components (yes, you want to replace), so you will know that you are accomplishing what you need to. The first fix I tried was just to reinstall the Mac OSX10.4.10 combo update for Intel Macs and this did not work, but when I used Pacifist and then reinstalled the MacOS X combo updater (do not get this confused with the update that is not the "combo" one- (use the links), it worked! I am not a web developer, so did not have to deal with the Java 6 stuff.
    Combo Intel update is here:

    QuickTime 7.1.6 is here:

  • Newer version of delta 10.4.7 intel update via Macfixit news

Macfixit is reporting that Apple will be re-releasing the delta update for intel...
    www.macfixit.com
    fyi

I can confirm that after running the 133.1 MB Updater a few moments ago that the build number from About This Mac now reads 8J2135a.
Before running the new updater, I ran the full 230 MB updater yesterday and the build number was 8J2135.
    Something changed....

  • Has anyone tried the suggestion from the macfixit site

see my earlier post, "painfully slow connection".
Has anyone tried installing the combo 10.4.5 update from the mac support site.
my imac came with 10.4.4 so I assume autoupdate just installed the latest delta, but perhaps there is a problem with the installer and an incorrect library version was linked with the library. Just surmizing , but that could cause a problem.
Anyway reinstalling the update won't hurt anything I don't think anyway.

I tried it and it didn't do anything noticable. At first I downloaded the PPC version by mistake and it wouldn't accept it. A little more digging turned up the intel version. But again no change.
What I found that is working for me is setting up my router to work in "b" wireless mode instead of "g" or "b/g". It has solved the problem for now and since the speed to the router still exceeds that of my ADSL line I have noticed nothing but fast and consistent internet access.

  • A FIX for error message: When I try to open Snood (it's a game) I get this message.  Not enough memory {Error # :: 0, in sound.cp@line 101  Can you help?

After years of playing Snood, w/o problems, I started getting this error message, on my iMac, OS 10.5.8,
with 4 GB of memory when opening Snood:  Not enough memory {Error # :: 0, in sound.cp@line 101
My MacBook Pro w. Mac OS 10.6.8 did not have this problem.
Initially I thought that Snood raised its minimum requirement to Mac OS 10.6.
I had several correspondences with Snood. Their tech support is great. Quick and thorough responses.
They thought the issue was in Mac's system preferences/ Sound. It was.
I didn't realize that my sound input and output devices were gone.
The fix was resetting the PRAM. I found this advice on MacFixIt.com.
    MacFixIt help with volume:   http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10415659-263.html
Resetting the PRAM is on Apple support:   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
My sound (music!) is back, along with Snood. So glad I reset the PRAM before reinstalling the OS software!
Thank you to Snood, MacFixIt and Apple.
    Happy new year all!

    Good work, nice post/tip, thanks!

  • Mac Pro turns itself on every day at the same time

My Mac Pro suddenly decided to start turning itself on every day at 6:00:12pm local time (12:00:12AM GMT). It turns on at exactly 12 seconds after 6:00pm every day.
I recently upgraded to OSX 10.5 and installed the point update. It did it before the point update and continues to after the point update.
I have had it since April and it has never done this before. It did NOT do this under 10.4.
I have the options in system settings to NOT wake on LAN event and NOT restart after power failure. It is NOT set to automatically turn on but it is set to automatically turn itself off at 1:00am.
These settings have not changed since 10.4 and I have verified them. No other software has recently been installed since the update to 10.5. I did update the Wacom driver to the new Leopard driver. That is all. I have the Wacom tablet unplugged from the computer.
    Any ideas?
Here is the console log from yesterday. It pretty much looks the same every day.

Updates installed by Software Update are "delta" updates - they go from 10.x.y to 10.x.y+1, and are customized for a particular Mac model. It appears that in this case they also patch some files instead of replacing them fully. The "combo" update will update 10.x.anything to the latest 10.x.y, it'll update any Mac model, and in this case it appears they contain full files instead of patches. The delta updater for 10.5.1 is about 39 MB; the combo updater is about 110 MB. You can download the combo updater from the Support site. Sites such as www.macfixit.com often recommend installing the combo updater instead of, or after, the delta updater, as it often solves mysterious problems. One specific example is the numerous "SUID" messages when doing a "repair permissions" - the combo update gets rid of all but one, and that one is specifically stated by Apple to be okay. Of course, no guarantees, but the combo updater is a reasonable thing to try.

  • A new IMac, old xp pc, Linksys and a new Hp All in one...now what?

Someone please point me in the right direction. I need to share all the functions of the HP all in one, printing and scanning with my new mac and old xp PC. Sharing files will be nice as well. At this point all will be hardwired. I may add a PC notebook wirelessly in the future. The Imac and the pc are hardwired to the router ( Linksys WRT54G Version 2). At this point I can access the internet fine. The printer HP CM1312nfi MFP is still in the box.
What do I do next. My router is out of warrantee and Linksys will not help. Apple care tells me to call Linksys and HP says the same.
I need a simple step by step guide that I can understand. I have been searching the internet for days and I simply give up?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Disk repair button in disk utility greyed out and I cant repair my disk

Safari stopped working totally and I downloaded it again but it wont allow me to install it onto the hard drive saying it cant use the software. Disk utility has detected that the disk needs repair but the repair button is blanked out.
Also I have password issues because it wont recognise my master password even though I know what it is. Even though I dont need it now I am sure I will in the future.
Crappy apple 'support' want our money but they only give support for 90 days. If they were so confident about their products working properly they would give us more than 90 day support and if their products really were good then we woudn't need to call would we? MAC *****

  • How to I make pop up windows go back to the left side of the screen when they are moving to the right?

Whenever I click on a link, a new window pops up. That's good, that's what I wanted. They've always opened on the left side of the screen. However, they are now opening in the middle of the screen. This has happened before and the screen eventually opened completely on the right. Last time this happened, I ended up having to delete something. I don't remember what, but it solved the issue. Please help!

  • Grey screen won't allow me to install Leopard from install DVD

I'm trying to do a fresh installation of Leopard on my Mac Pro. I have used the Leopard install DVD previously to install to this machine when Leopard was first released and I had no problem then. Now, the machine boots and I can hear it reading from the DVD. On screen is the apple sign and the rotating symbol underneath it. After a while I hear the hard disks power down and then up again and shortly after that, the screen fills with a dark screen from top to bottom and a message says that I need to restart the machine by holding down the power button. It never gets past that point. I can boot with no problem to the current installation on hard disk, but can't do a new installation.
I've tried this with all peripherals detached. I've even tried taking out all the hard disks just ot see what happens, and I get the same problem. I've verified/repaired the hard disks and also run a repair on the security rights. No success.
I have also tried the original Tiger install disk that came with the machine and that does the same thing, so I'm beginning to assume that this is some sort of hardware issue. I've checked the console logs, and the last thing that seems to be there is a message saying:
14/04/2009 09:55:41 [0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.systempreferences[230] Could not interpret boot device as either network or disk
The hardware diagnostics tests report no problems.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Help please! OS 10.4.6 - 10.4.7 update failed on my CoreDuo Mac Mini

I've read quite a few posts in these forums from other people who had problems with their 10.4.7 update. My situation seems a bit different.
Background info: I recently updated my PowerBook G4 from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 using the G4 Combo updater and everything went fine. I updated my brother-in-law's CoreDuo iMac from 10.4.5 to 10.4.7 using the Intel Combo updater, also without incident. I followed MacFixit's procedure for rebuilding file permissions and verifying my HD before attempting to update my CoreDuo Mini. My only mistake was failing to backup my Mini's HD before running the Combo updater. (I did make backups of the other two systems before updating, however my Mini didn't contain anything I thought was critical.)
About five minutes into running the same 10.4.7 Intel Combo updater on my CoreDuo Mini (running 10.4.6), I received a warning message that an error occurred during the update. The message recommended that I reapply the update. Unfortunately that was not possible -- Disk Utility, Disk Image Mounter and most of the OS was already nonfunctional. I tried to open Terminal without success. I tried to relaunch the Finder without success. There didn't seem to be anything to do except reboot.
Rebooting seemed to progress ok through the gray Apple screen and into the "Starting Mac OS X" blue progress bar. That bar advanced all the way to the right side of the screen and stayed there. After a few minutes with the blue progress bar completely filling its rectangle, the Mac's fan turned off and there was no further evidence of activity. The progress bar stayed there until, eventually, I powered off the Mini.
I tried rebooting in Safe mode but that did not seem to make any difference. Same results for attempts to boot into single user mode. I reset PRAM, but again, no difference… the blue progress bar on the "Starting Mac OS X" screen just sat there.
At this point I put my Mini into Target disk mode with my PowerBook and made a backup of the nonbooting hard drive using SuperDuper. (Yes, I know... I should have done that when it still worked in 10.4.6.)
My question is this: I want to do an archive-and-install or erase-and-install from my OS 10.4.5 installer disks but I get a red exclamation mark over my drive's icon which states, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume." The 'Options...' button is grayed out. The only thing I'm allowed to do is press the "Go Back" button.
I've checked my Mini's HD in Disk Utility (booted from the CD) several times and there doesn't seem to be any identifiable problem with it. I've run the extended Apple Hardware test but no issues were reported. My RAM recently passed nine iterations with Memtest in single user mode overnight. I've witnessed no HD flakiness or SMART status warnings prior to the update. My Mini is an otherwise perfectly functioning 7 week old Apple refurb.
How can I persuade the Installer CD to let me put 10.4.5 back onto my Mini's drive? I am completely baffled why I can't do a clean OS install from the CD.
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

(Oops, time expired on editing my previous post while I had breakfast with the kids.)
Apple's OS Installer seems picky about which disks it will install onto. It seems to require a disk with an active version of the OS. I've never been able to use Apple's Installer to put OS X onto a blank external Firewire drive, for instance. I'm not sure if it will update any external FW drive, though I can't say that's for certain. I expect the same limitation may be true for attached USB2 drives. Panther installers were picky this way too.
What I'm looking for is a clear explanation of what Apple's Installer needs to see to make the red exclamation mark go away. It has a very concrete idea about what's an acceptable target drive. Unfortunately, not knowing exactly what it's looking for, I'm at a disadvantage to give it what it wants.
I'm nearly to the point of calling AppleCare. It seems a bit ridiculous that I'm having so much trouble getting the OS Installer put the original OS that came with my CD-Mini onto my CD-Mini's hard drive. But maybe there's a trick to it I just haven't tried yet.
BTW, I was using this CD-Mini almost exclusively as a media player below my plasma TV. I'd like to be able to watch some EyeTV recorded shows this week. Right now this CD-Mini is little more than a paperweight due to lack of a workable OS.
    Thanks again.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Bridge

I finally succeeded installing photoshop CS3. My problem now is Bridge is buggy the only mode that I can use is light table, when I change modes the interface breaks up and I have small broken up ikons every time I try to get a thumb nail to open. Photoshop seems to be ok. Lightroom works great and I never had any problems with PS CS2. CS3 beta worked great.
    Thanks,RP

  • Does MacBook come with rosetta?

Hi tomorrow I am going into the City to buy my MacBook and I was wondering does the MacbBook come with rosetta?
From what ive heard it's inbuilt into the OS but I just thought id double check.
And I was wondering will Rosetta let me run Macromedia Flash and adobe photoshop 7.0 ??

If an application is written only for PowerPC, it will automatically open and run with Rosetta. You needn't make any changes.
There are a few anomalies that programs have hit under Rosetta, but they are few.
Here's a compatibility list, with problems and workarounds:
