MAIL APP will NOT OPEN- NOT RESPONDING/FORCE QUIT

Macbook Pro 2011
Using Mavericks OS X 10.95
I don't really use the Mac Mail very often because have always had problems with it so I will tend to use Gmail, Yahoo or whatever service it is.  I cannot even get mail to open at this point.  It just says Application Not Responding and then I force quit. and it still wont open.  The only annoying part is often on websites theres an email link to click and that opens the MAIL application to get that website.
Due to other problems, the Apple Geniuses recently wiped off my computer and made me install a backup so it should be 'fresh' and I wasn't having this happen before.  But then again, installing t he backup has created numerous problems that didnt exist before.  Ive tried rebooting already.  There are no pending software updates.  Everything is up to date except that it is not running Yosemite.

Do a backup.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • IPhoto would not Open Had to force Quit

I had iPhoto open but was working in another application and noticed that iPhoto application window had closed. I clicked on the alias in the Doc, iPhoto menu appeared but the window did not open. All menus were grayed including the Quit Command in the file menu and it did not respond to Command-Q. I forced quit from the apple menu. I repaired permissions shut down, restarted in Safe Mode. iPhoto seemed to work so I shutdown and restarted and iPhoto worked Ok.
There are 3 issues that I have found after resuming work in iPhoto:
    1. When I scroll using the Scroll Bubble in the Scroll Bar, a black box with the number 1 centered in a 2 x 3 inch box. The box appears and obscures part of the photos in the iPhoto window. This occured after the iPhoto error but the box does not appear while using the scroll bar arrows. I can't seem to find the source of the box or a way to turn it off, It really buggs me.
    2. I have an Album in iPhoto and a folder on my desktop containing the same photos. I opened them side by side to compare them and found that iPhoto and the finder do not display the photos in the same order. The Finder always sorts files in all windows by title in the same manner. iPhoto will place them in a some what different order sometimes 4 or five places away even though the titles are identical, very confusing. I was trying confirm that the photos were included in both the Album and the Desktop folder. I made sure that iPhoto was sorting by title several times during the search.
    3. When I export a single photo to my desktop I get a partially rendered picture. I have to export as many as three times replacing the previous file to get a complete JPEG photo. However I can export an entire Album containing as many as 160 photos at one time and all photos are complete and are in correct resolution.

    Richard:
Does this happen when you drag a thumbnail to the desktop, use the File->Export->File Export menu option or both?
#1- in iPhoto's Preferences/Appearances uncheck the "Show scrolling information" checkbox. If that doesn't fix it you might have to close iPhoto and delete iPhoto's preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder.
#2 - While viewing in the Album in iPhoto go to the View->Sort Photos menu and select by Title. It may be set to by Date.
#3 - that's not so easy to give a solution to. First download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Also run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Next try rebuilding the library by launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
You should be running Quicktime 7.1.6. If not update to it, repair disk permissions and try exporting again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

  • Mail App will not open, OR quit.

My Mail app will not open, and now when I need to update my mac, it won't because it says the mail app "cancelled restart". Mail app will not open nor close. When I click on "Mail" at the top bar, the "quit" option is in light grey (not clickable). HELP Mail is still accessable on my phone. Is there a way to delte the app all together (with out having to take it in) and re download.

IME, it has always been a flaky app- Mac up to date or not. I've force quit many times. It's an immediate fix but it would be nice if the app worked consistently. Currently, it won't open (which seems new) or close. Of course I will try force quit (easy solution; always has been) but this seems ridiculous. Early 2011 MBP all up to date.

  • Mail App Will Not Open After 10.10.1 Upgrade

A few days ago I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 and ever since my Mail app will not open. It will bounce and show the indicator dot, but no window ever appears.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Reinstall Yosemite:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.

I updated ML last night and my mail app will not open the main reading pane window , I get the menu bar and I can get the compose window to open but not my inbox or my mailbox folders window , not sure if the update has anything to do with it but worked fine before that.I also saw a new or different option on one of the dropdown menus that I have not seen before "rebuild mailbox database" If I remember correctly. As I said earlier the only window I can get to open is my compose window , I have restarted and even turned completley off and restarted with no success , I have not tried deleting the .plist yet because I was hoping no to have to. Any help would be appreciated.......Thanks in advance

    Which app icon is missing?
Are you sure it wasn't moved?
Have you checked on another page or in folders?
Does it show in spotlight search? (Swipe down from the center if the screen)
    Check your restrictions:
    Settings > General > Restrictions
You can also try resetting your Home Screen Layout:

  • Mail app on imac is not working

mail app will not load the page completly and i get the pizza wheel of death andmail does not load.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
