Mail opens at start up

I have my settings set-up so that mail opens at startup. Is there a way so that it doesn't pop up when I start my computer. What I mean by this is how widgets is always open but isn't on your screen unless you select it. I want to be able to do that with mail. Can I do this?

Due to an apparent bug, you cannot stop Mail from showing itself at login when it is set as a login item, but an AppleScript such as the following can be used to hide it automatically:
tell application "Mail"
run
end tell
delay 2
tell application "System Events"
set visible of process "Mail" to false
end tell
Paste it into the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder, save it as an application, and add it to the list of login items for your account. With this script set up, you don't need to keep the actual Mail application in the list.

How do I set-up Automator to open Mail when I start up Mac OS X? Provided that this is how I would do it.

    You don't need Automator.
Just add Mail to the login items in SystemPreferences>Accounts
    or
If Mail is on the Dock, Ctrl-click the icon and select 'Open at Login'

When I open Mail the fans start up and only stop when Mail closes. This began two days ago.
Previous to that I never had any problems with Mail; but Safari has been very slow on occasions. I don't know if the 2 pbs are linked.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

    Hello jerrysgirl777
For issues with apps closing on you at start up, try closing the app from multitasking, restarting your device, checking for updates or just deleting the app and downloading it again. Check out the article blow for more information.

  • Software update and now Safari and Mail open and then close immediately

We installed the latest 8-1 software updates on our G4 and Cube.
Now Safari and Mail open and then immediately quit on the Cube - but no peroblems are experienced on the G4.
Do I need to reinstall Tiger and start over?

A couple of things to try before taking those drastic measures.
    1. Repair permissions, restart.
    2. Boot with the install disk, launch Disk Utility, and verify/repair the disk.
    3. Boot into safe mode and see if it works there.
    4. Reinstall the 10.4.7 COMBO update, restart, repair permissions, and restart.
If those don't work, consider Archive & Install rather than an Erase & Install. See http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/ for details.

  • Why does excel, word and mail open when I turn on my Mac?

When I start my Mac Pro, excel, word and mail open.  Can this be stopped?

First of all, open the Apple menu (at the top left of the screen) > About this Mac, and tell me what OS X version you have.
If it's 10.7 or 10.8, check that all of those applications are closed when you turn off the computer. OS X Lion and Mountain Lion reopen the apps that were opened in the next startup. To disable this, just go to the Apple menu > Shut Down, untick "Reopen windows when logging back in", and turn off your computer, so they shouldn't open again

  • Mail POP sill start pulling down emails, then stop

I have been killing myself on this quirky malfunction.
using mac mail that for months worked fine it now starts to pull emails down from the server, after about 20 messages you see the kb/m drop to zero and it just stops. I can click around and change settings if i want, i can read other emails. but the program is in a "partial hang" it won't sent emails and it won't finish POP-ing the rest of the messages. and it won't quit. i have to force quit.
if i open mac mail and send a message it works fine. so long as i don't "get new mail"
i have done the following things to try to resolve the issue.
    -re-install from leopard disc
    -delete com.mail.plist file
    -delete accounts and re create
    -rebuild database for the inbox
-deleted recent emails from the server and the client side
in testing with another machine i can pop fine
on yet another machine i can imap just fine as well.
what else can i do. please help. my auntie's small business is depending on me to fix this ASAP
    thanks in advance

i received help on another thread about this problem. here it is:
quit Mail and delete the file home directory/library/mail/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3. then start mail and try downloading your pop messages again. note that this will cause mail to redownload ALL POP messages. so if you don't want doubles you may want to make a local mailbox in "on my mac" section and move the contents of your POP inbox there first before trying the above.
    It worked perfectly for me.
give it a try and let everybody know if it worked for you too.

  • Mail opening without being clicked

I'm starting to think I have a Mail gremlin. I know this is strange. When I click on the Google space in Firefox, Mail opens, completely unbidden. Also, when I try to input an event in iCal, Mail opens. ?????
I have restarted my computer. I don't have any new software....and this just started yesterday but is really frustrating.
    Any suggestions or ideas?

You probably have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget, or a plug-in, or a system utility, or iCal reminders, or something like that, that requires Mail to be running for whatever it does.

  • Import funtion for apple mail crashing after starting

Just got a new hard drive after Genius Bar said it was failing this week.
After they re-installed Snow Leopard, I moved my data from Time Machine back-up to my MacBook Pro. During this process, the mail import wizard kept crashing (Assuming there was at least one mbox file that either was corrupt or something?). So, I dumped .plist file, opened mail app and starting re-building all my folders one at a time using the 'rebuild' function.
But, the rebuild function did not grab a separate sub-folder in Sent Folder for my work POP accounts called 'Messages-T0x10bc0cb00-1KEwvh' - all of these have sent mail from the last two years. Everytime I try importing them, mail app crashes.
    A) How do I get these emails into my sent folder for this POP account?
    B) Why is the import function crashing? (The console keeps saying Can't get profile to fetch realms edu.mit.kerberos.krb5kdc Throttling respaw: Will start in 10 seconds)
    C) How do I know if "Rebuild" function didn't grab some other folders - do I need to manually find and rebuild those sub-folders?
    Thanks so much....
Sorry re-posting but there isn't any editing functionality.

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for OS 10.6.8 and under.  It shows you how in the link.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
    Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

  • Mail chraches when starting up

    mail chraches when starting up

    Greetings Micke52,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help when applications are quitting. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice for the issue you are experiencing:
Mac OS X 10.6: If an application quits unexpectedly
    Try these solutions:
Reopen the application by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears when the application quits.
Restart your computer by choosing Apple menu > Restart.
Restart the computer in safe mode. For more information, see:
    Starting up in safe mode
Uninstall any plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers for the application. If you’ve recently updated the application or Mac OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you previously installed may no longer be compatible.
Read the application’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to check if it’s compatible with your version of Mac OS X.
Open another document in the application. There may be a problem with the document you were trying to open.
Use Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, or on your Mac OS X installation disc) to repair the disk.
Check to see if any updates to your software are available by choosing Apple menu > Software Update. For applications not made by Apple, look for updates on the manufacturer’s website.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of Mac OS X. If disconnecting the device solves your problem, contact its manufacturer.
Use Apple Hardware Test. (If your computer came with an applications installation disc, Apple Hardware Test is on that disc; otherwise, it’s on the Mac OS X installation disc.) Insert the disc, and then restart your computer while holding down the D key.
If you just installed hardware, such as additional memory, Apple Hardware Test can tell you if it’s incompatible, improperly installed, or defective. If you can’t find Apple Hardware Test, take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
For more information about applications quitting unexpectedly, visit the Apple Support website.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    BobbyD

  • Why does my Epson printer hang while I have mail open?

Today I was printing big prints (13x19") and twice it hung up with the iMac refusing to recognize any input I had (magic mouse or magic trackpad) to try and unfreeze the iMac.  I noticed that the only difference in what I had printed before was that I had Mail open and running.  I had to resort to shutting down the iMac (forced quit by holding the power button for multiple seconds) and restarting to resume iMac operation.  Of course that ruined to sheets of expensive 13x19" glossy photo paper.  Later on I closed Mail and opened iPhoto (alone) and it printed fine.  (1) Why does it do this? and (2) Is there any other way I can interrupt the iMac (rather than forcing it to shut off) so that it will recognize the mouse or trackpad?
    Thanks,
    Tom

I think its a WiFi problem. I have the same intermittent disconnect problem and report with the router channel conflict detected. I found this article helpful. http://www.computerworld.com/article/2476307/mac-os-x/os-x-mavericks--using-appl e-s-hidden-wi-fi-diagnostics-tool.html
I have been able to temporarily fix it by reinstalling the Wi-Fi connection from the setup menu on my printer, (Epson WF 7510). But it sometimes disconnects after I shut it down and turn back on later. I haven't come up with a permanent solution that I know will work, but this article shows how do do wireless diagnostics. I've just started to try to figure it out. It is currently working so the diagnostic tool says everything is okay. The next time I'm unable to print I will run the diagnostics again and hopefully it will come up with a fix. The article suggests changing the channel of your router. I don't feel confident enough to know that I would make the right choice for a different channel. However if I keep running the diagnostic over time I might be able to figure it out.

  • Mail app always starts with the standard account.

    iPhone 5s
    iOS 7.1.2
Mail app always starts with the standard account.
Can´t it start in the mail overview, where all different mailboxes are shown.
    iPhone 4 did it..
    Opens in standard account:
Should open in MailBox-Overview: (here just one mailbox)
    7.1.2

After some searching I have found a solution. I had to delete the contents of the following folder:
    ~/Library/Mail/myemailaccount/.OfflineCache/
Note: replace "myemailaccount" with the appropriate folder on your computer that represents your e-mail account. Once I deleted the contents of this folder (there were 2 files), and restarted Mail, there were no problems.
Hope this helps a few people in the future!

  • Stuff on BTY mail opening page

I have just started with BTY mail.  The image shows the opening page.  I am not into updates and have not asked for any.  How can I stop items appearing  in hte "get updates from" column and in the updates section at the bottom of the page?  I cannot understand why the Woody2shoes upates are there at all - this is not one of my contacts.  I have tried deselecting "See Updates in BT Yahoo! Mail." in "manage settings".  This has no effect and when I revisit "manage settings" this has been selected again.
How can get rid of this stuff?
    Grateful for some help please.

    Hi Peterbill
    I can help with this.
To stop getting updates on the BT mail opening page click on 'Manage Settings' on the blue updates bar.
Untick the two boxes in the next screen to stop viewing updates.
    Thanks
