Mail woes

Hi...
I have OSX 10.5, updated to 10.5.8, but my mail program won't launch... The icon is actually messed up on the application (it has a photoshop icon -- weird), and something is clearly awry. So I got out my install disc to reinstall OSX, but it doesn't give me the option of installing just mail.
So do I do an install and archive settings, thereby going back from 10.5.8 to 10.5.1? And then I guess I can update later? Is this the best way to get my mail program to work?
thx!
Mary

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
• Click on the "Go" button .....
• Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
• Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes.....
• Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone
Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages
You will have to run the 10.5.8 Combo Updater to bring Mail up to the current version. Do this before attempting to launch Mail. Test that the new copy executes properly. If it does then empty the Trash.

• More mail woes

Hi all-
I have been having a great deal of pain trying to get the "mail" to work on my IPT. I use Charter and have got to the point when I press the mail button, a screen comes up that says "Inbox". The little spinning wheel at the top spins awhile then I get the error message The connection to the server "mail.charter.net failed. If I press "Inbox" I get a message that says "load 25 more messages.... but no messages are ever displayed. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks-
DMitzelfeldt

Hi!
If you are using "other" on the IPT for MAIL then you are probably going thru the same frustration I was with the "connection to server" failure message right? So I called both Apple and my ISP and neither could figure it out, Apple said it just won't work with my ISP, case closed. Not so fast I figured it on my own, here's what I did and it works fine now:
1. Connect IPT to your PC
2. In iTunes go to the INFO tab on the IPT screen
3. Scroll down to "Advanced" and check "Mail Accounts" on.
4. Sync your IPT
Disconnect IPT
Now check your Mail settings on the IPT, there should be one account.
Here's what I have and strange as it seems it works fine.
POP Account Information
Name: My Name
Address: My e-mail address
Description: e-mail address again
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name pop.ISPNAME.ca
User Name: My ISP User Name
Password: My Password (******)
Outgoing Mail Server
Nothing is filled in for any of those options - all blank
Advanced
Everything is off!
Try that and good luck!

• Thunderbird times out when trying to access my account, but no trouble with firefox.

connection to server j.maude@ntlworld timed out.
firefox access sees these accounts with no problems. WHY!!

I could wax lyrical for ages on possible whys!. Lets just say that the only similarities between the two processes is your see your mail in both.
However Assuming you have just updated Thunderbird there is about a 99% chance the issue will be the firewall in your anti virus program or some other component of it. They react very badly to version number changes and manual intervention is often required to allow a program that has worked for years.
The second most common cause of mail woes is the mail scanner drops the ball and mail just does not get through the anti virus. Turning off mail scanning is the easiest way to check that one.
Coming a distant Third is your mail provider has changed the settings to connect to their mail servers ( this usually is accompanied with an error, often complaining incorrectly about the user name and password)

• I lost my PREFS

Somehow during a batch of Pacbell related mail woes, I swapped over to MAC.com and deleted my old acct. info. Somewhere in the process I lost all my preferences other than ACCT page and stop.
I tried to go into my library>preferences > mail etc to delete it and restart, but of course the file isn't there, hence my problem.
I would reinstall if I had the original software disks, but they got lost in a move. I tried to see on the apple.com site if I could download my mail program again and start all over, but couldn't find it.
Any suggestions welcome.

• Virex replacement, upgrade method most recomended?

lazy today. after my Mail woes, I decided to ask rather than look for answers.
Planning an upgrade to Tiger. On the .Mac support page, there was a link to information about Virex's incompatibility with Tiger. But in all the information, there was no hint as to what Anti-Virus app you CAN use.
q1) What Anti-Virus app can I use with Tiger?
Also... in past upgrades I've made (okay ... only one, Jaguar to Panther) there were a lot of different opinions on what method/route to go with. I have an external HDD and can fully back up each system I plan to upgrade first, although some of the downloaded apps are going to be a pain to document for re-install later, I am open to anything.
q2) What is the BEST method and/or MOST POPULAR method for performing an upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger ???
Beavis2084

Hello Beavis:
Allan always gives good advice.
There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X. I have not run AV software on a Mac since the first release of OS X. Any AV software uses resources and "some" cause additional problems.
I always use archive and install as that method installs a fresh version of OS X while (I know, there are a few minor exceptions) leaving all of your programs, data, and files intact. A&I also creats a previous system folder that has a copy of all of your files, folders, etc. before the update.
I would not recommend an erase and install as that does what it says - erase everything.
A good backup/retreat strategy is essential. I make bootable clones of my systems on an external firewire drive using a little program called Super Duper (about $28 at www.shirt-pocket.com).
Best of success.

• Mail server setup Woes

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have:
A server with three users.
A domain that points to that server
Mail enabled for the server
But when I try to use Apple Mail to point to that server and login, I get "could not connect to this IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account Preferences. etc."
I can telnet to my domain over port 143 and thus see that the server itself is running, but it is apparently not letting me login with my name and password.
I'm flummoxed and have no idea where to go from here.
My Cobalt Qube was easier to setup than this thing.

You have to provide valid values for only the follwing two fields:
1 Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
2 and Sender's E-mail Address
Optionally you cand enter something in the Identify Sender As that will be used in the email body as an alias for the email address.
It should work. I tested this a few moments earlier.

• Migration woes (mail in particular) PPC iMac w/ 10.3.9 to new Mini w/10.5.4

Me: mac user for 20 years.. web master, and unix not-quite-guru .. so don't be shy and no need to use small words in suggesting a remedy.. at this point I'll hexedit raw HD sectors if I have to...
Mother has an aging iMac, Power PC, one of the "lamp" style.. which has only a CDRW drive, so w got her a new Intel Mac Mini for xmas.
Brought a Firewire cable along and figured Migration Asst would do the job, read a few web pages about it last week in preparation, or so I thought.
Booted her new Mini and opted to transfer data from another Mac... as directed, I rebooted the old iMac with T and saw the Firewire symbol dance around its screen.. I believe at some point it settled into the center and stopped moving.
The new Mini would not recognize it.. giving an error message along the lines of "there are no OS X volumes".. which is patently untrue since she is running 10.3.9 on the iMac (there is an old 9.2.2 System folder there too). 10.3.9 was selected as the "blessed" Startup folder.
So I saw the ethernet option and thought "aha, we'll skin this cat that way instead".. connected the ethernet cable and got the helpful instruction to insert the Install Disc #1 and copy Setup Asst over to the old iMac and then enter a 6? digit code to authenticate.. ok, nice idea, except the install disc is a DVD (dual layer at that I think) and the old iMac can't read DVD (smack some co-op at Apple for not considering that).. even worse, despite 15 minutes of searching I could not simply find this application anywhere on the Apple site for download directly to the old iMac....
so abandoning those ideas, I found a knowledgebase article about migrating manually.. so I continued the new user acct setup on the Mini and got that finished.. then launched the migration asst on the new Mini (from the Utilities folder) and it took quite a while, but finally the HD in the iMac appeared (the old iMac has one and only one drive, the original internal one).
So I copied her photos, music, addr book, ical, mail, bookmarks, keychains, etc info over.. and per the KB I copied the mail plist file from prefs.. the KB says that is all I would need and Mail "will do the rest"...
Not so much... I can see her saved mail folders on the new Mini.. .and I can see in Finder and in Terminal that they should contain old mail (~50 MB worth, these folders exist and are very non-empty).... but inside Mail, no messages appear at all, nor her Inbox (ie. mail she had downloaded already on the old iMac, but not yet saved to a folder, nor deleted)
I am totally at wits end.. ideas?

So in the end, I erased all the Mail I copied over originally, and the prefs file, and started a new acct with her info and imported all her old mailboxes (having saved her old Inbox to a "savedinbox" mailbox, in case Inbox importing didn't work).
Gotta say, couldn't have been more disappointed with the Migration Assistant, which in the end did not a bloody thing for the transition. Thankfully her usage of the old iMac was simple and not that many files... one would think it would be the easy and ideal case for Migration assistant to handle.
I'm marking this as answered only b/c I'm not going back to do this again.. she is up and working and I won't know if any proposed solution actually works.

• Mail Server Woes

Hey All,
I could use some help debugging Mail on my Mac Mini Server (10.8.2 - All updates installed). Two issues going on: mail is not arriving in the inbox and outgoing mail sent from the server does not arrive at the destination - it doesn't matter if its addressed to an internal email or an outside (gmail) account. I can authenticate with the server fine. All the appropriate mail ports are open (25, 110, 143, 587, 993, 995) on the Airport Extreme. I've tried turning off the Junk Mail settings and it made no difference. I'm open to ideas on where to start trouble shooting? If its helpful, I can include the postfix.conf file.
Mail Server: mail.eclimb.org
Any ideas?

You need to look at your logs, if things are failing that is the first place to start to see what the system is reporting.
Look at IMAP Log, Mail Server Log, SMTP Log in logs section of Server app.
Also BTW your external DNS name for your mail server is 'mail.eclimb.org' but your server hostname looks to be 'sawtooth.eclimb.org'. Your server may not like that fact and also RFCs state & DNS best practices advise not to use CNAME alias for mail server machine. CNAMEs are OK for things like web & FTP but not SMTP (the MX record).
See restrictions section in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNAME_record
Anyway look at your logs first while you are doing test emails:
in from Internet,
out from LAN and
between two email addresses in your domain using two hosts inside your LAN (i.e. message never goes out to Internet).

• 8703e e-mail delays and OS 4.5 woes...

My BB 8703e is getting HUGE delays in e-mail delivery. I go without e-mail for hours and then there is a burst of e-mail delivered. Today, I didn't receive my e-mail for 11 hours! I used to get my e-mail on my BB sometimes even before my G-mail browser displayed the e-mail and it's now very very delayed. I do have to admit that my BB is quite beat up, several serious drops and such. Could it be a hardware issue or is this software?
I suggest software as an option because I had "upgraded" my BB to 4.5.0.148. It was a suggested update when I downloaded the latest desktop software for doing a backup. (I hadn't done it for a while) Ever since the upgrade, it has been unbearably sluggish, keys don't respond as quickly as they used to, when I answer the phone in the middle of a vibration "ring" the other side can actually hear the vibration buzz. Apps run slower. Startup from a hard boot takes minutes. Overall, very dissatisfied with the performance under the new OS. Should I downgrade? Would downgrading help the e-mail delays, too? How would I go about doing a downgrade? The desktop software only provided the latest OS for installation. I mean 4.5 has some eye candy and I do like the front screen with summary but if that's what's causing my issues, I'd rather have a dependable phone than eye candy.
Thanks for any help!

• SBC Global and Apple Mail program woes

So I have SBC Global mail account and I use Apple's mail program to manage and access my mail via POP3 configuration. About 5-10 times a day randomly throughout my Mail program asks me to enter my password because the server rejected it, I know the password is correct because it works other times. I then enter my password and check the box "use this one" and it gets the mail but later on in the day it will reject my password. I use a gmail and school email account in addition to my SBC one, and they all work fine, thus ruling out a Mail glitch. Perhaps there are settings, or a known problem with apple and SBC? Does anyone have any experience, tips, or the same problems?
Thank you,
TM

• Mail/Gmail woes

Hi, hope someone can help.
I've been using Mail.app as my Gmail IMAP client for a few months now, and everything's been OK up until yesterday, when I can no longer delete messages from Mail. I drag and drop messages into the Trash Folder (that's linked to Gmail's Trash), but when I try to delete the contents of the folder the messages go grey and the "delete' button changes to "Undelete".
On top of that. Mail now regularly hogs 80-90% of CPU (According to Activity Monitor).
Anyone got an idea as to what's gone wrong?

You need to look at your logs, if things are failing that is the first place to start to see what the system is reporting.

• Mail Sync Woes

New BB guy here, pardon my ignorance...I'm normally a Windows Activesync guy.
I have a user (senior executive of course) with an 8130. He uses a tethered USB connection to his laptop to sync his calendar and contact list to his Outlok 2003 folders which are fed by Exchange 2003.
We recently replaced his laptop and installed the latest version of the BB desktop software on it, thats when the trouble started. Suddenly his calendar is chock full of duplicate items on his device, but not on his laptop. Digging in I found that his device is displaying two calendars...his synced calendar AND his Verizon account's calendar is also displayed. I hid his VZN calendar and figured it was solved, but then we noticed that some of his recurring appointments just plain aren't there anymore, which suggests to me that his old sync setup (I didn't set it up personally) had him syncing his Outlook profile over to his VZN account's calendar.
Basically I want to get everything off the device and wipe it clean and rerun the sync from the beginning, but I can't do that until after I get everythign off the second calendar and back into Outlook where it belongs. Any suggestions as to how I might accomplish that withtou being put in the position where I'm just going to recreate the issue when I resync it? Basically I want one calendar in total...is it possible to simply copy the appointments from the VZN calendar over to the Outlook Synced calendar on the device and then just let the device sync the new appointments back over to Outlook?
Thanks in advance.

Well I'm not sure if I fixed the problem, but I did resolve the issue so thats got to count for something, right?
First I checked the BB software version, saw it was 4.3.x so I downloaded the full 4.3 suite (after reading a few other posts indicating that other users had hosed their calendars by upgrading to 4.5) and installed it on my laptop, configured my spare mail profile to be the user's so I could play without using his office.
I swapped out the default calendar from Desktop to the VZN calendar, ran a full 1 way sync from the device to Outlook, awitched default calendars to Desktop and reran the sync...then I switched the device back to the VZN calendar as the default and did a 1 way overwrite sync from Outlook to the device, effectively adding all the regular outlook calendar items to the device's calendar.
**bleep** if it didn't work! All his appointments are now showing up on both locations and I hid the device's desktop calendar so he doesn't see double.
So two questions remaining:
- Does the VZN calendar on the device automatically sync back to a web BB server somewhere out of my control? If so I need to kill that connection to protect potentially private customer information.
- How do I go about just wiping the device so it returns to the factory settings? Ideally I'd like to wipe just the calendars so I cna rerun the sync properly as thought it had never been synced before, but if I cna olny wipe the device I'll take it.

• Continual Mac woes (no question, just a rant)

It's Tuesday, and I am having terrible problems with my Mac. But then, why should Tuesday be different from any other day of the week.
Here is a typical day for me. The computer appears to be working OK. I need to watch a DVD for my work. I turn on DVD player, and put one in. The machine can't read the disc. It clicks and whirls, but the icon does not show up on the desktop. Meanwhile, so distressed is the machine that it freaks out. What was up until now was a fluidly operating machine suddenly reverts back to its old ways (i.e., its ways of two days ago). The hold ups and spinning pinwheels begin to eat of hours of my work day. (Remember the old days when computers made life easier?) The machine becomes sticky, gummy. Oh, I can move the curser and it seems to work for a second but then gets stuck in the dock, which explodes in icons and then freezes for five minutes. Yes. Five minutes.
Would love to use Force Quit, but the cursor is spinning, and nothing is responding. Funny about that old Mac. You can't force quit Force Quit. I guess I need to leave it open all the time.
Of course, FQ usually works on Safari. I have never just "quit" Safari. It always requires Force Quit, otherwise I can't turn off my computer. It stalls shut down.
Now I have a DVD trapped in there and can't get it out. [But I just got an answer from another posting.]
In the old macs, there used to be a pin hole you could stick a needle into ... can't find one on my flatpanel iMac.
I bought my Apple flat panel iMac in August of 2002. Yes, I know that that is a long time to have a computer, but I am not rich nor attached to a corporation that can splurge on computers. The first weekend I had the machine, I had three kernal panics.
Among the other problems I have documented are the following: the dock hiding itself unbidden and other features checking and unchecking themselves (Aug 2002); bus errors connected with OS 9 (Sept); some problems that inspired the tech person (Eric)) to talk me through deleting my user i.d., resulting in the loss of two months worth of e-mail (Thursday, 12 September); Preview problems (September); a bizarre box with an unmovable and undeletable red stop sign in it that no tech person or other Mac user I know had ever hear of (Monday 30 September); printing problems; computer won't shut down, numerous disconnection errors, which turned out to be caused by an OS X update (beginning December, 2002, or later); Kernel panics (Feb); computer won't shut down (March); Faxstexx problems, program won't allow me to set it up, finally just deleted the software (April); keys like "V" freeze and repeat endlessly (May 21); DVD Player freezes (May); Safari and Mail begin quitting unexpectedly (May); cursor begins to blink and fade out, plus odd sounds come out of the speakers, a constant error beeping (Sept 9); DVD Player problems (Oct 4).
I called AppleCare while I had it about once a week (the total between August 2002 and the time it ran out was about 155 calls). Naturally, some of these calls are motivated by user error. On the other hand, many of the issues I have called about were unprecedented as far as the Tech person was concerned, such as the blinking mouse, the red stop sign, and the DVD Player woes.
Things improved with Panther, but in Tiger many of the same old issues have returned.
I have been having so many problems with my Mac that I once wrote a letter to the company asking when do I qualify for a new replacement machine. I never received an answer, but I felt better for about a day. Then I turned on my Mac again.

The spinning ball of death as we used to call it is often caused by a lack of RAM, it is hard to be sure as I am not working on your machine, but sometimes things can be improved with additional RAM, it makes it seem like a whole new computer.
A lot of your problems sound like stuff that can be fixed easily enough, and although frustrating things happen here and there with updates. It sounds like you are in fairly good spirits with it all, I would suggest just researching a bit more into maintenance you can do to help maintain the computer and educate yourself a bit more (sounds like you already have learned quite a bit along the way) and you will find a lot of these issues take you a few seconds to rid yourself of. I would start by making sure you are repairing permissions regularly and running the most up to date software. If a lot of problems persist, try creating a second user that is a "test" user to see if the problem is replicated on that user (don't delete your other one, but if you do find the problem not on the other user, you might have a corrupt user, however you don't have to lose all your emails there are plenty of ways to back it up and import it in, or even just bring the entire Mail folder from your library over to the new user). Another thing you can do if you find a lot of system problems is archive and install the OS, it takes a bit of time, but doing it overnight shouldn't be an issue, and you won't lose any of your stuff.

• Mail 2.1 goes to wrong IMAP directory, creates multiple connections

My Mail 2.1 woes continue using IMAP accounts on a FREEBSD virtual server.
I have 2 IMAP accounts and should be logged onto the server once for each account. My server people checked and told me I was logged on 10 times for 1 account and 7 for another. In all instances I was not in the Mail directory but in the root directory. Furthermore, my server people watched as I restarted mail and while I initially get to the Mail directory, I then move to the root directory.
I tried adding "Mail" to the IMAP path spot. That didn't work, and caused my other IMAP account to go offline and stay offline.
Last night I had connection problems when sending an e-mail and got a message that there were no outbound mail servers set up. So I set up the 2 IMAP mail servers and then things worked, then Mail program didn't work, and when I checked the outbound mail server list, the old missing servers were back on the list along with the new servers.
I also checked, and some of my local storage files and directories are now listed as being on the server as local storage. Very weird.
To make this all work going forward, I need to be able to get Mail 2.1 to go to the Mail directory on the server. I tried putting "Mail" in the IMAP path, but then it was looking for ~/Mail/Mail instead of ~/Mail.
Any ideas on how to get Mail to go to and stay in the Mail directory on my IMAP server?

I fixed the problem by dumping Mail and switching to Thunderbird 2.0.0.9. All problems solved. Thunderbird has much better control over what happens between client and an IMAP server. (Probably a bad thing in an institutional setting.) Unfortunately, in other aspects, Mail is better than Thunderbird, particularly in junk mail screening. While there may have been away to get the latest version of Mail to work with my IMAP server, nobody seems to know including the Apple Store Genius and, by lack of replies on this board, most people in the know on these things.

• Firefox 13.0.1 appears incompatible with Yahoo mail (process hog)

I have 2 MacBook pro 17s. Yesterday I upgraded to Firefox 13.0.1 in both of them. The newest one (about 2 months old) became extremely sluggish (20 minutes to send an email and took forever (several minutes) to switch between Firefox tabs). The old MacBook (2009 model) worked fine. Both have current versions of OSX Lion. I use Yahoo mail on the new machine but not on the old one and I realized that everything was fine until I opened Yahoo mail. Then the new machine just couldn't really do anything in Firefox. The dashboard would show Firefox running at about 98 or 99%.
Bottom Line: I installed Firefox 12.0 on the new machine and the problem immediatly disappeared. The machine ran fine and Yahoo mail & all Firefox tabs were fully functional & speedy.
Just to double check I installed Firefox 13.0.1 again and the machine stalled out as soon as I opened Yahoo mail. I went back to 12.0 & everything is fine.
I had worked w/ Apple tech support for many hours on 3 different occasions and pretty much anything that could be reset/ restarted was (no help). So I'm reasonably sure that this is a Firefox 13.0.1 problem.
Safari worked fine during all of my woes.

This can be caused by corrupted cookies.

"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file cookies.sqlite that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
