Making table cells non-focusable

I have a JTable in which some of the cells should never receive the keyboard focus. I want the TAB key to skip over these non-editable cells, but I'm having trouble. I've tried using a cell renderer where getTableCellRendererComponent calls setFocusable(false). This has no effect at all. How can I get the focus to skip forward to the next editable cell when I press the TAB key?

I want the TAB key to skip over these non-editable cellsThese a two separate and different requirements. Using the Tab key does not prevent the user from clicking on the cell. But if this is the real requirement then check out this posting for one solution:

  • How to make a cell or column in JTable non focusable.

    I have created a table which contains 2 rows and 2 columns. My requirement is that 2nd column should be non editable and non focusable. Making any cell non editable is very easy but how should i avoid focus on particular cell.i.e., suppose focus is on first cell and now if u press right arrow button on the keyboard 2nd cell should not get highlighted and focus should remain on first cell.
    Thanks in advance

    Override the default Tab Action. Here is an example:

  • Catching a table cell focused event

    I have a JTable that I want users to input data into. One of the columns is a date field. In order to make sure the date is formatted and entered correctly, I've used a custom cell editor and renderer so the column looks like a DateTextField(a custom date field class). It works fine when the user clicks on the cell. But if the user hits the down arrow it doesn't set off the event that allows it to be edited as a DateTextField. Can you capture somekind of focus event on a particular cell and when you get a focus gained, programatically send the event that allows the cell to be edited? In case that didn't make sense, I'm trying to programatically simulate a mouse click on a table cell when it gets focus. Can it be done? If so, how? Thanks.

    Yes, I've tried that. The problem is what some people have described as a bug. There are two editing methods for JTable cells. One happens if the cell gets focus. There is no cursor and any underlying components are ignored. The second(the REAL edit) is when there is a cursor and the JTable understands that the cell is really a DateTextField. The only way I've found to achieve this is click on the cell. The number of clicks it takes depends on what the clickCountToStart is set to. However, if it's set to zero, it still takes one click.

  • Making a Table cell editable. Please Help

    Hello there,
    I have written an Inner class called CallHeaderRenderer
    which is used to select to highlight a row from a table.
    But i am unable to edit the column data I click on.
    Please can any one tell me how to edit the column value when you double click on it??
    Attached is my Inner class used to select the concerned row.
    I am unable to edit the concerned column.....
    Please help.!!!
    What is the statement to make the cell editable!!!
    class CallHeaderRenderer extends DefaultTableCellRenderer{
    public CallHeaderRenderer(){
    super();
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int column){
    // Set the highlight for record chosen.
    super.getTableCellRendererComponent(table,value,isSelected,hasFocus,row,column);
    return this;
    }

    A renderer has nothing to do with editing the cell. I suggest you read this section from the Swing tutorial on "Using Tables" for an explanation of how tables work. The tutorial will give one method for making a cell editable:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/table.html
    Here is an alternate way to make a cell editable:
    table = new JTable( ... )
        public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int column)
            //  All columns, except the first, are editable
            if (column == 0)
                return false;
            else
                return true;
    };

  • Help: Jbo Exception non blocking when using table cell renderer?

    Hi,
    JClient 9.5.2.
    When using Table Cell Renderer on an table cell attribute that is defined mandatory and activating the insert button, the (oracle.jbo.AttrValException) JBO-27014 exception is caught but it is not blocking and a new row is still inserted.
    The JClient component demo, table attribute list, has the same behaviour.
    You can add multiple rows even if not all required attributes have been documented.
    Can a Swing specialist help me on this one?
    Example of Table Cell Renderer:
    public class TableBasicStatusRenderer extends DefaultTableCellRenderer
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus,
    int row, int column)
    JLabel lb = new JLabel((String) StaticData.getStatusName(value)); // retrieves label from Map
    return lb;
    Regards
    Frederic

    Hi,
    I found something interesting, it could be a WORKAROUND!
    I noticed that in another detail panel with table layout the JBO exception was blocking and adding another row before completing the row was NOT possible.
    In the create method of the entity object of the displayed View Object I iterate over the detail row iterator to retrieve a maximum value.
    By the end of the method the pointer is positionned after the last row.
    So I added to the detail panel that doesn't block following code:
    In create method of detail Entity Object Impl (only one entity object involved for this View)
    // Retrieve master EntityObjectImpl from association:
    PostalTariffImpl postalTariffImpl = getPostalTariffAssoc();
    // Retrieve detail default row iterator
    RowIterator ri = postalTariffImpl.getPostalDetailGroupAssoc();
    // Position pointer after last row
    ri.last();
    ri.next();
    Question: Why does this solve the problem?
    Regards
    Frederic

  • Buttons in ALV Grid cell need focus to be clicked :-(

    Hi,
    I have an ALV Grid with single cells displayed as buttons (dependend on the data in the corresponding row). Unfortunatelly the button-cells need focus to be clicked. So you need two clicks: one to get the focus to the desired cell and one to really click the button.
    Any ideas how to make this work with one single click ? (Setting a hotspot does not work, cause hotspots have the same problem.)
    Regards,
    Tobi

    Hello Tobias
    The proposal by Naimesh is valid for CL_GUI_ALV_GRID, too. You may have a look at sample report ZUS_SDN_ALVGRID_EVENTS_HOTSPOT. Put the focus on any non-button cell and next click on any customer button.

  • Can't enter a date into a table cell the way I want to

    I am trying to put "Jul 2008" in a table cell but every time I remove focus from it, it changes to "Jul 1, 2008". This is very annoying, how can I turn this off?

    I solved this by making the "Cell Format" "Text" using the Inspector.

  • Multiple tabs in table cell (FM 7)

    Hey gang,
    I've got a table that requires multiple tab stops in one table cell.  They're easy enough to place--I use the Tab Stops segment in Paragraph Designer--but I cannot move back and forth between the tabs. Each tab stop must be numbered.  For example, I inserted seven tab stops in the cell.  Is there a way to step through the tab stops without leaving the cell?
    Thanks in advance!
    -terry-

    I need to add that the above may not work, depending on your platform and FM release.
    On FM7.1/Unix, Find randomly fails to find things in tables, and tabs are no exception. The hack above did not work.
    On FM9/Win7, Find of \t did navigate between tabs in a table.
    The real parent problem here may be: who gets to see the keycode from the [Tab] key? It appears that the OS GUI gets first crack at it, and what's passed to the app may not be an 09h character but some window nav event (that has to be converted back to an \x09 when the intent is to type a tab into the text, but when the focus is in an FM table, FM thinks you want nav).
    An FM-specific sub-problem is that FM doesn't support tables within tables (actually, it does, but you have to create a new text frame inside an anchored frame inside the table cell). Tables within tables would eliminate the temptation to tab.
    Tabs, of course, have been a CS problem forever, as there was never an agreed industry standard for what they meant (move 8 spaces, or move to next multiple of 8 space from left, or move to next tab stop, and what if none are defined, etc.). In FM, users who use tabs are generally doing so from habit from other word processors, and are grabbing the margin tab tool, rather than defining stops in Paragraph Designer. A later author updates the para format, resetting all overrides, and bye bye tabs.
    I usually use borderless tables these days for body text layouts that might historically have been done as tabs.
    If I need column-control inside table cells, I'll often use as many columns as needed, and straddle them in the cells that don't use the extra columns).

  • How to highlight the table cell color in respective colors as needed per the requirements??

  • Highlighting text in a table cell

    Im trying to get text in a table have it background shaded a different colour to the rest of the table cell but it doesnt work. No exceptions are thrown does anyone have any idea.
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table,
            Object value,
            boolean isSelected,
            boolean hasFocus,
            int row,
            int column)
            setFont(table.getFont());
            this.setText(value));
            this.selectAll();
            this.setSelectionColor(new Color(0,0,255,100);
            return this;
        }

    The answer is similar to what someone else asked recently for highlighting text in a JFormattedTextField cell.
    class MyFocusListener extends FocusAdapter
    public void focusGained(FocusEvent e)
    SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable()
    public void run()
    selectAll();
    Put that in your cell editor or its base class. You can change the color or whatever you want. I think the problem is a timing thing where normal focus processing is interrupting your changes. So give the focus processing time to run with this Runnable triggering your processing to occur on the Awt thread (as is proper) after the system is doing whatever it wants to do. Let us know if it works for you.

  • Table cell renderer works with any L&F, but not with Windows

    Hi,
    I created a table cell renderer / editor for a combobox in a table cell. This works all as expected, but if the Look&Feel is com.sun.java.swing.plaf.windows.WindowsLookAndFeel, which is the system L&F on Vista, the selected values in the combobox are not shown in the cell after loosing focus. Metal LF and Motif LF work, and a third party one "TinyLF" works as well.
    Can anyone imagine why, and what needs to be changed to get a cross platform consistency without Metal LF?

    1) Your custom cell renderer does nothing extra, so you can depend on default renderer.
    2) Instead of extending JLabel and implementing TableCellReneder, you should extend DefaultTableCellRenderer and override its get renderer method because DefaultTableCellRenderer itself extends JLabel and aditionally it does some optimizations etc., which you can miss if you implement your own renderer.
    3) If you set foreground and background color in last else statement also, then you can see the values correctly in windows L&F as well.
    Thanks!

  • How to put gradient style table cell in a table?

    Hey, I am making a custom table cell right now but my custom cell is just white cell with some buttons and labels in background color which looks not that great.
    Is there a way to render the background color so that the cell has some vertical gradient effect?
    For example, on top of the cell it looks white and as it gets closer to center of the cell, it gets darker.
    But as it gets closer to the bottom of the cell, it gets whiter again.
    A great example would be this free app called "friendsaroundme".
    Another thing is that I don't want to use custom image to do it (i.e make the cell.backgroundcolor = [uicolor colorwithpatternimage:somethingsomething.png..... ) because it's not that flexible.
    So is there anyway to render the gradient style programatically?

    Congrats on answering your question, David! I'm sure many of the developers here would like to see your solution, so I hope you'll post it when you have the time. - Ray

  • Mail.app: text in table cells in incoming formatted mail - problems replying

    MacOS 10.9.2
    mail.app  7.2, threading enabled
    Sometimes I receive a formatted email that is really difficult to reply to, when I want to intersperse my reply text among the incoming paragraphs.
    The trouble occurs when multiple incoming paragraphs are grouped. I can’t open up vertical space for my reply  text inside the groups.
    If I click anywhere in the group, mail.app marks the group with a surrounding rounded-corner grey rectangle, with a X-in-a-circle “close icon” at the upper left corner.
    When I look at the raw source of the incoming message, I see that the groups correspond to table cells, that is, the sending mail client enclosed the paragraphs within a <td> … </td> pair.
    The sending email client is sending me a table, for no clear reason — the group doesn’t correspond to anything obvious in the message thread.
    I’m guessing we won’t ever know why some email clients group paragraphs like this, but I’d like to do my best to adapt, so I can keep up with my incoming email.
    Yeah, I can ask my correspondents to use a different email client, or perhaps different settings in the same client, but except for the few tekkies among my correspondents, this isn’t really practical.  I can also ask my clients to use unformatted messages, but THAT is a whole different issue, and frequently isn’t practical, either.
    My questions:
    Q1:  What’s the point of the grey rectangle and the  “close icon”?    (Is this mail.app’s way of saying, “I received this crazy formatting, almost impossible to process, so I’m making it easy for you to just delete the whole mess”?  Or what?)
    Q2:  Is there any SIMPLE way to untangle (modify or remove) these groupings within mail.app?  (I guess I can access the raw html, copy-and-paste it into another app, modify it, and paste the results back into my reply.  Yuck!)
    Q3: Am I missing a really obvious work-around or fix?
    TIA

    In your question, you indicated that you are running Firefox 8. Is that correct? It might be difficult to diagnose issues with that version because most people have moved on to Firefox 12 (plus or minus 1 version). Can you upgrade?
    It's hard to think of a reason that ordinary text or links in ordinary text would not display. For embedded images or videos, one possibility is a difference in the protocol, i.e., HTTP (not secure) versus HTTPS (secure).
    Hopefully someone else will have a better guess (or actual knowledge!).
    Regarding the blue lines in a message, that usually indicates the earlier message was forwarded a few times. I don't know whether Gmail will let you reformat that area or whether you have to clean it in another application (e.g., for plain text, in Notepad) and paste it back in.

  • How to enable a table cell dynamically?

    Hi
    I have a javafx TableView with editable and non-editable columns. I have set editable columns CellFactory to a custom EditableTextCell.This makes the whole column editable on load of the Scene.
    I have one more requirement for the same table. I have to make the table cell editable at runtime based on a flag in item mapped to tablerow. Only a single row cell should get editable not all the cells in column. How to do that? Please suggest.

    Perhaps something like this
    create or replace view v_myview
    as
    select id, name, 'table1' as tbl_nm from table1
    union all
    select id, name, 'table2' from table2
    union all
    select id, name, 'table3' from table3
    union all
    select id, name, 'table4' from table4
    select name
      from v_myview
    where id = 101
       and tbl_nm = :P101_TABLE_NAME;

  • Small issue with custom table cell editor and unwanted table row selection

    I'm using a custom table cell editor to display a JTree. Thing i notice is that when i select a value in the tree pop-up, the pop-up closes (as it should) but then every table row, from the editing row to the row behind the pop-up when i selected the value becomes highlighted. I'm thinking this is a focus issue, but it thought i took care of that. To clairfy, look at this: Before . Notice how the "Straightening" tree item is roughly above the "Stock Thickness" table row? As I said, you have to have empty context elements before additional rows will be open for input.
    For instance if you want to start with 5 rows available for input do the following to your internal table that you will bind:
    data itab type standard table of sflight.
    do 5 times.
      append initial line to itab.
    enddo.
    context_node->bind_table( itab ).
    The other option if you need n number of rows is to add a button to the table toolbar for adding more rows. When this button is pressed, you add a new context element to the node - thereby creating a new empty row in the table.
