Malcontent describes better tools

I'm not a happy camper. This stuff could be insanely great, but it isn't quite connected yet. Anyone else feel this way?
We've got javadoc. I thought this was great when I saw the Sun docs. Then I wanted to do my own, so I learned how and now I've got my own, very slick, docs for all my code. This is a good thing.
But I've also got source file bloat. I really don't want the javadoc and the source in just one place. I want a switch so I can go from javadoc to source and back. I also want to edit the javadoc directly in some competent HTML editor. We java programmers may be the last people in the world to still be typing <whatever> and </whatever> tags. Why can't I select some text and click "Code" or "Pre" or "Bold"?
And speaking of bloat, how about all those getters and setters? Here's a really radical idea: when I define a field I want a little check box for getter (uh, accessor?) and another for setter (mutator, if you like). Occasionally I write some interesting functionality, and I still want to be able to do that when I need to, but for the basics I don't want to be bothered. Let the computer be bothered.
I want a switch that will throw me into the real, bloated, javadoced, ugly source files so I can do those special things when necessary. But most of the time I want to work at a higher level. I want to work on the source code with nothing but the type of comments we used to have - explanations of algorithms and non-obvious bits. I want to work on the javadoc in a decent HTML environment. I want the fields to be a data table of protection, type, name, default value and checkboxes for getter and setter.
If you feel this way too, add your thoughts and when we've got a nice collection we'll see if we can find someone at Sun ONE Studio, JBuilder, . . . and tell 'em to build us some insanely great tools.

JavaDoc is good attempt to provide source and documentation in the same place without having to have tools like VSS etc that provide those services. Having the documentation you want people to see and the code in the same file means that
1- There is a better chance of the documentation being kept in sync with the source (Sylvia got that)
2- the code might actually do what the documentation says it should do
As for formatting your JavaDoc comments, you can use a tool like Sun One which helps you with these annoying trifles like HTML tags. There are also DocLets now which can help you format your documentation automatically.
Tools do exist which present classes to the user as a unit where things like properties can be changed by simply (un)checking a few boxes. TogetherSoft does this with alacrity.
In fact, is this is really what you want, go get a License for TogetherSoft Control Center or write your own tools.
If you are unhappy with the stuff you can get for nothing like Eclipse or Sun One Studio then perhaps you should really look a little closer at how to achieve what you want using those tools. I can do most of what you are describing in Sun One Studio Community Edition and more.

  • Feature request: Better tool for organizing image files

    Hi all,
I'm considering rearranging the directory structure of my photo library completely (for a number of reasons: new cameras, a new variety of tools on new PCs).
I would like to reorganize my photos into a year\month directory structure and that will basically spread all my image files into new locations.
I have searched quite a bit and the advices I have seen don't seem to work:
    (1) Moving the files outside LR is fairly easy (using exiftool) but I cannot make LR link to the files automatically in their new locations. And doing it manually with "Locate file" or "Find missing folder" is not practical due to the large number of files and large number of new locations.
    (2) Moving the files with LR tools is also not practical: Manually dragging the photos into the new directory structure will take forever, and the only automatic rename feature I know of is "Rename Files ..." cannot move the photos into new directories (it can, however, assign names from the file dates and other metadata).
Now my feature suggestion: Either make it possible for LR to automatically relink files that have been scattered into a new directory structure or - better yet - make it possible for LR to perform such auto-organize operations.
My mp3 manager (MediaMonkey) is a good example to follow: It can organize (move or copy) any number of music files into any directory structure built from the audio file's metadata (such as my standard audio directory structure: Music\<Artist>\<Album>\<Track#:2> - <Title>).
Interestingly, the LR "Rename file" function can almost do it already; it just cannot move the file into a new directory.
Or can this be done in a way I haven't discovered?

Sorry if I might be stating the obvious (but at least I was such a *dummy* once that I needed this explicitely):
In order to move the sequence of images per drag&drop in grid view you need to
Put the sort order in the bottom toolbar to "user order" (toggle visibility with letter T if not displayed)
Grab an image from within its thumbnail, not from its border-cell.
When you move around you see a vertical black thick line wandering in between images where you would be able to drop it
Put the images first into a collection in case they should be spread across multiple folders.
This is the reason why most often from a filter result you cannot re-arrange.
Still sometimes it does not work as I want, but can *be persuaded*, i.e. I repeat the same trial after first moving to another collection, then return back. I can't nail it down sufficiently to file a bug.
For an automated sorting according to filename (chosse that setting finally in toolbar) you could rename the photos in place, without exporting & re-importing. Just select them and hit <F2> to bring up the renaming dialog like possible during import.
+1 vote from me, as I am neither satisfied with the responsiveness of moving folders within LR e.g. from laptop hard disk to NAS.
Apart from that I try not to build much on my folder structure, just break them into manageable quantities and have a quick "diary-overview" by using naming convention "YYYY-MM-DD description of event" (pictures of up to 4 cameras go inside, unique filenames for Canons achieved by renaming during import). For all the rest I prefer to build (smart) collections.

  • Feature request: better tools for commenting and editing text

We currently use a comments-enabled Acrobat workflow with InDesign to track changes to our large catalog project. Was hoping to move our team over to CS Live, but currently the commenting tools are sub-par, and not accurate enough for extensive text editing. My request would be to imitate the text editing functionality of Acrobat:
    In CS Live online:
    - allow users to be able to copy selected text. (This is useful when a reviewer wants to be able to modify a sentence or paragraph. It's a headache now to have to retype the sentence prior to making modifications)
    - Ability to highlight text and hit "delete" to mark text as deleted, or highlight and type over to indicate replaced text
    - Ability to click to insert text, and have the comment appear with the inserted text designation (little blue carat like in Acrobat)
    - ability to highlight a section of text
    In InDesign:
    - ability to copy the text in a comment and NOT copy all the other extraneous meta data. (Currently, if you click "copy text", it will copy the comment along with all the details about the comment. For example, "- Amy Stewart [10.06.11 at 12:56 PM]"
    - ability to see in InDesign the EXACT part of the text that needs to be modified. Right now, the red box outlines the general area. The CS Review panel shows a tiny thumbnail with black highlight over the area of text that needs to be changed, but unfortunately, there's no way to zoom in on it, so you're stuck having to toggle between InDesign and the online review, where it's possible to zoom. (This diminishes the utility of the CS Review panel.)
If you were able to incoroprate all the commenting functionality of Acrobat, I think you'll have a winner. But right now, we're going to have to stick with Acrobat as it's the only way to easily modify text.

  • Lightroom 2 beta tools.

I find the RETOUCH tool very handy and more control than burn and dodge in PS. Gentle and subtle work is possible with the raw files. Any thoughts?
ZOOM SLIDER comes and goes..what am I doing to lose it then find it again?
This might seem a dumb question but am having probs with having that slider available or visible. Any advice?

  • Looking for a more suitable animation tool

I've been creating animations from sprites in After Effects, with mixed results.  The input is a number of pixel art sprites (exported from elsewhere), and the output is a video, characters running around and interacting.  I have AFX doing quite a lot, but it's very awkward and I'm pretty sure it's the wrong tool for the job.  Can anyone either suggest better approaches, or more suitable software?  I'll describe what I'm doing now:
    - Many sprites are bodies or heads to combine, eg. a smiling or angry faces and walking or standing bodies.  I set the head position for each body sprite, so any head fits in the right place on any body (trivial rigging), then apply it with a script, so I can change the body and the head moves to the right place automatically.
    - Some sprites have multiple layers.  For example, while heads are normally on top of bodies, a body may have an arm raised, which needs to be above the head instead of below it.  I can create the extra layer for the body separately, and it works for any head.
    - I can set the draw order per-layer.  Usually, one character and all of its parts is drawn on top of another--body1, head1, body2, head2.  But, if two characters collide, handshake, or interact in other complex ways, I may want to draw both bodies, and then both heads, even though the heads and bodies are still anchored normally.  Some sprites may have multiple layers, eg. body, head, hands, legs.  (Z position hack...)
    - Individual layers can be adjusted separately, eg. to adjust the default head position downwards to give a nod.
    - Some sprites are hue shifted (hair color, clothing color) or have more complex adjustments applied, so I can reuse more sprites.
(I'm only describing what I'm doing and not how.  I wrote more detail about what I'm actually doing in AFX and the specific issues I'm having, but it was too long and people can probably already guess the practical issues of using AFX like this.  I'll post more info if anybody asks.)
The result is functional, but a real hassle to actually work with.  AFX is a compositing and effects tool and it's not really designed for animations, and only its scripting support has let me abuse it this much.  I don't know of a better tool, though--searches for animation tools mostly come up with things like Spine (authoring individual models for importing into games), and nothing suitable for creating complex video animations from sprite sets.
There are probably many tools to do small pieces of this (sprite animation sequences, effects, scene animation, camera), but I'd really like to not split into a multi-tool workflow, since I want to experiment freely with a scene, not lay out an entire scene and then create it start to finish.  Does anyone have any suggestions (or better places to ask)?

  • SAP J2EE installation and MySQL tool

    Hi folks,
I successfully installed the SAP WEB AS J2EE preview ( full version ) and allready managed to create some tables using a java dictionary project.
I also downloaded SAP MaxDB SQL studio ( from www.mysql.org ) but this tool is driving me crazy ...
It simply refuses me to log on ... I used the user and password as described in the installation manual ... didn't work ...  I created my own user and gave the user a password in upper case ( yeah I found the remark in the manual about defaulting upper case ) ... doesn't work ...
    I downloaded both versions of the studio ( 7.5 and 7.6 )... nothing ... dead ... frustrated ....
I just want to enter some data in my table .... boohooobooe ...
Anybody knows a better tool for data entry ? ( without having to write my own EJB CMP beans and web application ) or a solution for my problem ?
    Steven

    Hi,
One question? Are you able to log on to the MAXDB Database
    administrator?
If yes, it should also possible to log on to SQL Studio with this user.
Also try to use User CONTROL (PW: CONTROL).

  • A better way to deal with lost hyperlinks when converting Robohelp to Printed doc?

I have inherited a 750-page manual that is
"single-sourced" in RoboHelp X5. When I generate printed
documentation, all of my hyperlinks and converted to plain text.
Everytime we release a new version of the manual with any changes,
we have to re-generate, and then manually go into the MS-Word
converted document and re-create some 350 hyperlinks and page
number references. Somebody please tell me that there is a better
way to do this, or a better tool to manage single-source
    documentation.

Another post has been raised relating to this problem. See
    http://tinyurl.com/yvpaut
I am replying here is this is where most of the relevant
    information is.
You found that using the Style Mapping template solved the
images problem but the document stopped generating at 450 pages.
That was sort of what I hoped for. Rather than go to the step I
will suggest in a moment, I suggested you try something else but
you never came back to the forum to indicate you had tried it, so
the assumption is you did and it worked. Patently it did not so
let's try what I would have suggested next.
On my website there is a topic on Print Issues and one of the
them covers Malformed Topics. Try looking for <p
style="mso-bookmark: as suggested in my earlier reply in this
thread. You can try RH's Multi file find and replace but FAR from
    http://www.helpware.net/FAR
may get better results. I think with this error you usually get a
message. Do you have the Output pane opened and have you read right
through it for clues? View | Output on the menu. Whether or not the
Output pane mentions this error, I would search for it anyway.
    Other Points:
A] It could still be a resource problem. The document is very
large so, as Harvey mentioned, resources come into it. I know the
PCs that won't play nicely have good resources but whilst I am no
expert in this area, don't foget XP is using more of them leaving
less available to you. It could be an issue but I am inclined
    towards it being something else.
B] I also suggested a hunt for a rogue topic.
"What I would try is copying your layout so that you have
three versions of it. Then delete two thirds from each one. If all
three work fine, it sort of confirms that size is a problem. If one
fails, your on the track of the rogue topic."
Did you try that? Like I said, if all three work fine, then
we are back with the resource problem but we will have ruled out
other issues. It should take less than fifteen minutes to set that
up. Longer to run it but you can be doing something else at that
    point.
C] On FrameMaker, no real answer but you will soon see
evidence that Adobe are continuing to better integrate all the
products we are using. I don't think you will see what you want in
    the upcoming version though.
    NEXT:
    1] Please search for <p style="mso-bookmark:
2] If that fails, try creating the three layouts.
3] Then post back how it went. If unsuccessful, tell us if
the Output pane gave any information about things the process did
    not like.
Let us know either way as if one succeeds and you post that,
it helps the next person with the same problem.

  • Is Framemaker a better option than InDesign for footnote-intensive reports?

We currently used InDesign to layout our reports and briefings, and are exploring it's XML capabilities with a view to output in multiple formats: high-res PDFs, web pages within our CMS, and e-Pubs. We are unable to tag our hyperlinked footnotes for XML output in InDesign, and wondered if Framemaker would be a better tool. Our layouts are in colour, in a 2-column format, contain charts and tables and occasional exhibits, and we adhere to a strict template with both paragraph and character styles.
Any direction or insights would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Andrea,
Your sample does not look like being »foot-intensive«, I only find two footnotes. And those will not be a problem for FrameMaker.
For 2-column text layout FrameMaker (as InDesign) gives you the option to create one text frame set to have two columns, or create two connected text frames, each of them one column. To keep the footnote in the original column, you would use the latter method. More information can be found in the online help:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS6C3D24E6-2965-48bb-B6CF-50D1439AEB01.html
Regarding other elements of the sample pages I don’t see any stumbling blocks. Just be aware that the general approach to layout, and especially when using XML-structured documents, is completely different from InDesign. With InDesign you just move all the frames wherever and whenever you want. With FrameMaker you plan ahead, create master pages and paragraph styles and then follow this original design. Creating layout changes »on the fly« is just not the way you work in FrameMaker. But this limitation is the reason for a higher layout consistency.

  • J2ME Development Tools

    Hi all
I have found this forum about Java and as I have seen, it is very active and useful in order to solve Java problems or doubts.
The fact is that I am going to use J2ME and I have to decide what the best development tool is, I have read different articles and there's an extensive list of tools: Sun J2ME Wireless Toolkit, Sun One Studio 4 Mobile Edition, Netbeans, Eclipse, etc.
But, what development tool do you recommend me for its good usage and properties?
I have some good references about Eclipse but maybe there are better tools. What do you think?
Moreover, I would be very grateful if you could say to me if there are other interesting forums about J2ME and Eclipse, or the development tool you use.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and help.

  • Which is better ODI or OWB ?

    Hi,
Which tool is better if both target and source is Oracle 10g?
    Suggestions are appreciate.
    Thanks.
    - Virag

If your source and target are Oracle database then OWB is a better tool as it has more transformation than ODI .
OWB is going to use the database engine for all the processes so it will be more efficient also .
If source or target is some other database then go with ODI .
    Thanks,

  • Tool or  idea wanted...how to remove an object in a frame

    After Effects. CC2014.xxx
Yesterday I effectively removed a small skin mole on a close up of a hand ( in movement) by using Simple wireframe Tool. ( and key frames)
EAsy as it was at the time... I wondered if there was a better tool or technique to do this but it actually only took me  5 minutes for the 4 second clip anyway. And it was perfect.
Now I want to remove a wrist watch from a mans wrist ( medium shot with tilt up). Objective is to show him with a bare wrist.  ( food factory hygiene issue !!!)
There is movement of the wrist as in picking up an object ( a biscuit on a conveyor belt)  from  foreground,  and lifting it up slightly to show to camera.
    Thoughts and ideas wanted  please.
I cant imagine "painting and restoring it".

I have worked with several Oracle IDE's in the past:
    * TOAD
    * PL/SQL Developer
    * Navigator
    * SQL/Developer
Right now I tend to do most of my work with SQL-Developer and only some tasks with TOAD.
SQL-Developer feels faster and has a cleaner interface than TOAD, while TOAD has better tools.
Im currently publishing a series of tips for SQL-Developer in my blog:

  • Is iMovie the best tool for dividing up an audio track?

I have an LP put onto an audio CD which ended up as one long track. I would like to divide it up into the individual tracks for each piece. This shouldn't be difficult, but I'm using the new iMovie 10. I had iMovie 6 and that's easy to use; this new version makes everything seem impossible. But is there a better tool?
I managed to import the track, but I can't even see the time displayed anywhere (I had worked out the times where I want to cut it up) which is so frustrating.

  • Tool to document PL/SQL

    Hi there,
I want to document PL/SQL procedures, functions and triggers.
Can some suggest the best methods or point me to documentation samples?
A documentation tool called javadoc can be used to generate java API documentation in HTML format.
Are there any similar tools available to generate HTML documentation for PL/SQL ?
    thank you,
    Vasukh

I too have not been completely satisfied with PL/SQL documentation tools as they compare to the same tools with Java. One of the better tools comes with TOAD ( http://quest.com/toad ) (licensed). You can generate very extensive and configurable HTML reports of all your objects (not just PL/SQL objects).
Nonetheless, I think that someone might have already developed or discovered a more javadoc-like tool. If they have, please post it's location here.
