I do have 11gR2 standby database with grid infrastructure. Database and listener are registered to oracle restart. They start automatically.
What do I need to do to automate managed recovery process in oracle restart ?

ARCHIVELOGS generated log time ago.
changes the REDO groups from 3 to 5 and size 100 to 200 MB at INACTIVE state

What command are you using to recover ?

Standby Database - from READ-ONLY to Managed Recovery

We have a standby database set up for our production environment.
We are able to switch logfile on production and perform the managed recovery and then switch over to READ-ONLY mode. However, when the database is in READ-ONLY mode...I cannot close it if there are active connections.
There are 2 ways I can attempt to close the database...either by "shutdown immediate" or by issuing an "alter system kill session (##,##);"
If I issue the "shutdown immediate", then the RFS process does not transmit any more files...saying the connection to host is not there. Therefore this is not a valid solution.
I can use an alter system kill...to kill all active connections...but it would require to know what other connections are there.
Does anybody know how to best do this...to close the database by forcing all connections to end (except your current one) so you can "alter database close" and switch over to managed recovery?

u just shutdown the server and restart in standby mode. it will apply all pending archive autometically.

I ran the suspect code which i believed was causing the issue as a standalone Java program using the same Java executable and it worked fine without any crash.

I just wanted to throw in one more thought. I have also seen that there is a restart=true parameter. Maybe if we set this to true, and just issue the command to shut down the server in the script, the managed server will restart on its own.

Hi,
asm resource is depending on diskgroup resource ... if diskgroup res. is not available, crsctl status shows offline, I would expect asm should be also shown as 'offline' (and brought offline) as they are dependent.
What is the point of managing resources via srvctl when it doesn't take care of dependencies? For me it's wrong.ora.asm : is ASM Instance
ora.*.dg : is Diskgroup
ora.*.dg is dependent of ora.asm, not to the contrary.
I can have more than one diskgroup and want only one diskgroup disabled, so I need the ASM Instance (ora.asm) online.
Important:
If you shut down the database with SQL*Plus, Oracle Restart does not interpret this as a database failure and does not attempt to restart the database.
Similarly, if you shut down the Oracle ASM instance with SQL*Plus or ASMCMD, Oracle Restart does not attempt to restart it.
An important difference between starting a component with SRVCTL and starting it with SQL*Plus (or another utility) is the following:
When you start a component with SRVCTL, any components on which this component depends are automatically started first, and in the proper order.
When you start a component with SQL*Plus (or another utility), other components in the dependency chain are not automatically started; you must ensure that any components on which this component depends are started.
Oracle Restart also manages the weak dependency between database instances and the Oracle Net listener (the listener): When a database instance is started, Oracle Restart attempts to start the listener. If the listener startup fails, then the database is still started. If the listener later fails, Oracle Restart does not shut down and restart any database instances.
It makes no sense Oracle Restart to shut down all environment (databases) because the listener down.

Managing ARCHIVE Logs in Oracle 10.2.0.3

I am working with a customer who seems to think there is a way of controling the database other than a custom JOB, script or RMAN in how it creates, manages and deletes its archive logs while running in archivelog mode. He wants the database to automatically delete obsolete archive logs. He also wants to control the duration in time between each time an archive log is written in order to stop the growth of archive logs and filling up disk space.
I am saying this is not possible. You either configure RMAN to delete the obsolete or expired archive logs based on your retention policy or do it manually in the Enterprise Manager or Grid Control Console by deletenig obsolete or expired logs.
Am I correct or am I off base here?

4.1.3 Sizing Redo Log Files
The size of the redo log files can influence performance, because the behavior of the database writer and archiver processes depend on the redo log sizes. Generally, larger redo log files provide better performance. Undersized log files increase checkpoint activity and reduce performance.
Although the size of the redo log files does not affect LGWR performance, it can affect DBWR and checkpoint behavior. Checkpoint frequency is affected by several factors, including log file size and the setting of the FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET initialization parameter. If the FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET parameter is set to limit the instance recovery time, Oracle automatically tries to checkpoint as frequently as necessary. Under this condition, the size of the log files should be large enough to avoid additional checkpointing due to under sized log files. The optimal size can be obtained by querying the OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE column from the V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY view. You can also obtain sizing advice on the Redo Log Groups page of Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control.
It may not always be possible to provide a specific size recommendation for redo log files, but redo log files in the range of a hundred megabytes to a few gigabytes are considered reasonable. Size your online redo log files according to the amount of redo your system generates. A rough guide is to switch logs at most once every twenty minutes.

Automatic Deletion of Applied Archive Logs
Archived logs, once they are applied on the logical standby database, will be automatically deleted by SQL Apply.
This feature reduces storage consumption on the logical standby database and improves Data Guard manageability.

Where this gets a little confusing is that one of my developers tells me that this is difficult to implement and that Sun arent planning on supporting the Oracle AS in future.
What I would like is some clarification from the horses mouth so to speak. In particular is it possible to integrate the policy agent and Oracle AS, and are Sun committed to supporting and developing for this.

There is a PA 2.2 for Oracle 10g ! It is the latest version(2.2 I mean). I don't see any reasons why Sun should not continue. But it is ONLY my point of view...

Of course it is possible because you can find the PA that will integrate your Oracle AS with a Sun AM.

PA are very easy to integrate if you know what you do... Espec. und. the AM auth and sso... If you can be helped by a AM guy from your comp. it is welcome... It is a j2ee agent and of course the PA will make what is necessary to redirect you to AM at login time and later to auth. your request...2)

I did plenty of int. with Sun/Bea/Tomcat AS(don't forget there are also webserver agents like Apache PA) with AM and it is not a big deal. Not Oracle, but it is an AS and I don't see why it should be difficult...

Hi,
The standby database has been activated previously but since then reverted back into its standby role. Prior to the
RMAN duplicate operation the "alter system reset control_files scope=spfile sid='*';" has not been executed (i.e. the
control files have not been overwritten).
check the incarnation on both the sides i.e primary & standby
list incarnation of database;
RMAN> reset database to incarnation 2;
database reset to incarnation 2
RMAN> exit
hope you can solve by restting the incarnation.

How to Install Oracle Restart

Hello All,
I have a standby database with ASM. I would like it to be start on the server reboot.
I have read chapter 4 of Oracle Database Administration Guide 11g R2 where it mentions
If you install Oracle Restart by installing the Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a
standalone server and then create your database, the database is automatically added
to the Oracle Restart configuration, and is then automatically restarted when required.
However, if you install Oracle Restart on a host computer on which a database already
exists, you must manually add the database, the listener, the Oracle Automatic Storage
Management (Oracle ASM) instance, and possibly other components to the Oracle
Restart configuration.
Please can someone help me with the steps to setup Orace restart in 11gr2.

Oracle Restart

I am going to upgrade from 10.2 to 11.2 in linux. I like to add the new feature Oracle restart but i am not going to configure ASM and files hold in file system. If i want to do so how i install Grid Infrastructure seperatly to support only for Oracle restart.

Managed recovery vs dataguard

I see some posts the they are not using dataguard and just managed recovery. Could someone let me know what is the difference?. I know only physical / logical standby database (dataguard) and also streams replication.

For example you can create a standby database with Standard Edition and this is not Data Guard since Data Guard is a Enterprise only feature: http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3682421/Manual-Standby-Database-under-Oracle-Standard-Edition.htm.
One of the main difference between standby database and Data Guard is that Data Guard allows to manage the standby database in a automatic way only by using SQL statements especially to send redo with LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_x instance parameter. You can manage a standby automatically without Data Guard but you have to use non Oracle scripts.

Integrate a Oracle Forms Application in SAP Enterprise Portal

i would like to integrate a Oracle Froms Application in our SAP Enterprise Portal. We use Oracle Froms AS 10g v10.0.2. I read that oracle forms supports single-sign-on, but i don't understand exactly how does it works? What steps i need to do? Has anybody experience in this topic? Supports oracle forms application SAP Logon Tickets?

If i understand everthing right, it is possible to implemant the SAP-Logon-Ticket-Libary in the integrated application. By Oracle Forms is this not possible, because it is a framework application. The authentification to the Oracle Forms application is transferred over the Oracle Application Server. It is also no possiblity to implement the libary in the application server.
Today i talked to the Oracle Support and they said that one solution is to use the Oracle Access Management as Middle-Software between SAP EP and Oracle Application Server.
What do you think about this solution? It is really not possbile to integrate Oracle forms in SAP EP with SAP-Logon-Ticket without an extra software?

Managed recovery cancel

When I cancel managed recovery using below command,I still see below messages in standby alert log.
What is the reason for this ?

I believe that means the apply is now being used with LGWR as the source rather than ARCH.
