Managing shared hard drive on linksys e3000

I setup a shared hard drive on my Linksys E3000 and everything works fine except for this issue:
I created two shares, say Folder1 and Folder2. However any edits made to Folder1 from any laptop's File explorer (Windows & Mac) reflects on Folder2. If i create a folder in Folder1 it would automatically be created in Folder2 and vice versa. So it is like having just one folder. How can i edit these folders exclusively without having one folder update the other automatically.
Thanks

I recommend that you phone contact your regional Linksys support office and ask for help and information regarding this.We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

  • Shared hard drive disappearing after airport update

My shared hard drive attached to my airport extreme will mount but afterwards gives me the error message "The alias “xxxxxx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." Also the drive is listed under my shared section in the finder window but when selected gives a share-point icon and doesn't allow access. This has been occurring after the airport utility update. Any information would be greatly appreciated....and I just got the access via the internet working and now this - bummer.
workaround: I have found that selecting the drive in the finder window then deselecting and selecting a second time will give me access to the drive but thats a pain in the rear.

"It will not let me verify the drive" means that I am unable to verify the drive.
Today, I installed the security update on my 24" intel imac, that I've owned since April. I restarted the machine. Up came the folder icon with the question mark. I restarted a second time and the same thing occurred. I then inserted the installer disc that came with the computer and I was able to start up the computer that way. Using the Disc Utility, I attempted to verify or repair the hard drive, but all those options were ghosted ("it will not let me verify the hard drive") Also, while there, I saw that the hard drive partitions were not recognized: there were two partitions (1: 500GB; 2: 198GB) but now it was registering a single drive at 698GB of 750.
I then called Apple support. We reset the PRAM. We did a hard drive test (restart holding "d") and that test produced no error. We then tried unplugging all peripherals, including the power supply, and letting it sit for a few moments. The imac restarted to the same results. Finally, the tech suggested attempting an archive install, which was not available as an option. Further, the install disc did not detect an available hard drive for installation, so the option to reinstall the OS was not an option, either.
The tech said my only option is to take it in for service, leaving me unable to work for four to five days (if I'm lucky), as they won't get to it until Monday, and even then they're backed up.

  • Managing Multiple Hard drives

I have an iMac 27" 2012..this machine is fully loaded including two Hard drives...a 250 SSD and a 1TB Sata...the problem is everything I do goes onto the SSD and now its full and the imac won't run properly...I cannot find any way to manage the hard drives or any info online...everyone just says move folders a..but all it does is copy them and won't let me delete after i move it.....I need help now...first Mac and it's about to go back!!!!...

    Back up all data.
Copy your home folder to the hard drive, if that's where you want it to be.
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Users & Groups. Click the lock icon and authenticate. Right-click or control-click your name in the account list and select Advanced options... from the popup menu. In the sheet that opens, change the location of your home directory. Log out and log back in.

  • ITunes library on a shared hard drive

I have a scenario, someone please tell me if this is plausible.
Lets say I have an airport extreme base station and a shared hard drive, a macbook pro, and an imac. essentially, i want to not have to transfer and store itunes content on more than one machine, and not have to run both machines and stream using home sharing.
If I want to utilize itunes content, say watch a movie, on my macbook pro or apple tv, can i set up itunes so that the main library folder, for the two different computers with two different itunes and also the apple tv, can be located on the shared hard drive?

doable but only one at a time.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Shared "libraries"/mltple computers wireless networked to shared hard drive

I really spent some time researching this question prior to posting. My goal is to have three computers (mine, wife's,kid's) all accessing a single hard drive on which all of our combined music is stored with iTunes on each computer seeing our whole library of music, then all of us can create playlists, sync to varous nano's, shuffles, etc. Hard drive is all set up, wireless access is set, all three computers can access various other shared files on the hard drive. All three computers have been "mapped" so that they look at this new Z drive, so I went through Edit/Pref/Advanced/General and changed each computer to look at this new Z drive versus their own C: drive/Music folder etc. Then I went through Advanced, Consolidate on one computer to put all of our music that used to be on one individual computer's hard drive and successfully moved it out to the new shared, wirelessly accessable Z drive.
Now, I want to be able to add new songs to that Z drive, ideally from any individual computer and have all other computers "see" those new songs that are now out on the Z drive. I have gone around the house and tested adding via CD's new songs from each computer to the new shared Z drive and that works. However, each of the individual iTunes libraries do not see the new songs.....is there some way that each computer's iTunes could update itself so that it recognizes that there are new songs out on the shared hard drive??? If so, I can't seem to figure out how to make it work.
Also, on Edit/Preferences/Sharing...I have selected and checked "Look for shared libraries" and also selected/checked "share my library on local network"....and selected/checked "share entire library"....and I have done this on each indvidual computer, but I am not sure if those are the right selections/checks to achieve my goals. Is this what I should do on each computer?? In the blank "Shared name:" I typed "iTunesShared" which is the name of the file that I created on the shared hard drive and I did this on each computer in each individual iTunes program. Is this what I should be doing??
Finally, on one of the computers (the computer that I have been currently using to add CD's to our shared hard drive) under Library, on the left hand column...there is a heading called "Shared" and under that heading it lists two subheadings - one called "Owners's music" and the other called "Susan's music" - and those seem to turn off and on if I have one of the other two computers logged on and its iTunes program launched. If I go to one of the other computers and shut down iTunes on it, one of those subheadings will disappear. Also, with iTunes launched on the two other computers - I see under the "Shared" heading the "iTunesShared" heading and if I click on it, iTunes is then looking at the Z drive with all of the our songs stored on it....but the other two computers can only see this file if the computer that I have been downloading songs from is launched....i.e., the only way all three computers can see the Z drive with our full song library on it is if just one of the other computers is up, running and has iTunes launched.
Again, my goal here is to have all three computers iTunes be looking at the Z drive so that they would have access to our full library of songs...so, any ideas how I can make that happen or what I have done wrong here?? I think I am closing to figuring this out but am now stuck. Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.
    thanks,
    CAS

Seems like you have things set up right. You may be disappointed though.
Each account on each computer is separate as far as libraries go. Even if all are set to save to the same location, like yours, the different libraries do not see each other. The library files for each user are basically just shortcuts to where the tracks are, so even if 5 users add the file to their own library there will be media file.
What this means is that adding files with one, the others will not know it. There is no setting available to change this behavior. Each user must add the files to their own library using the 'add folder' or 'add file' options.
Is that everything? You had a big post.

  • Managing Imac hard drive

I just imported an old iphoto library.  It came in with a million face jpegs that were small (50kb)  I am trying to erase them all.  Now when I look at All My Files on Finder, a million things are not showing up, even though they are still there.
What is the best way to clean out and manage a hard drive on this machine?
    Thanks

    Hello,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

But if you want to rid yourself of those small jpgs...

Near the bottom of the page.
    Search for Files & type...

When it finishes, sort by size, you can highlight them there & trash them from there if you want.

  • Airport extreem as a shared hard drive?

    Hi,
I was wondering if I can use an Airport Extreem base station as a shared hard drive.  I want to be able to drag and drop files into the base station and use it as a sort of "home cloud" where users can leave files on the network without keeping them on their Mac or pc's hard drive.  It has 2TB of storage, which is more than enough.  Airport Base Station Agent is installed on my pc and, of course, my MacBook was ready to go right out of the box.
    Thanks!

Yes, no problem (AE doesn't come with built-in drives, so I'm assuming you have an external one connected via USB).
    From Apple' web page:
    Share your hard drive.
You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with OS X Leopard or later, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.

  • Time Capsule as a shared hard drive?

Can Time Capsule be effectively used as a shared hard drive, so that two people could work on files directly from the drive?
For example if we have a layout file with linked images saved to the Time Capsule, could we open the file from the drive and work on it?
If so, is it better to use wireless or ethernet connection?

    Apropo wrote:

That could work.  However, depending on the software being used, I wouldn't expect both users to be able to edit the same file at once.
is it better to use wireless or ethernet connection?
That would depend on the size of the file(s) and the strength of the wireless connections.

  • Installed Leopard and can no longer connect to my shared hard drive

I had a sweet set up with a Drobo (fancy external hard drive) connected to my Airport Extreme base station. Before I upgraded to Leopard, my MacBook Pro would discover the Drobo disk and run scheduled backups without me having to do anything.
Since I installed Leopard, I can see the Drobo disk in the Finder under SHARED > Airport but I cannot access it. It won't accept my password to connect to it. What's really weird/dumb is that I can use Airport Utility to reset the password and change whatever settings I like... but when it comes to actually using the disk, I'm locked out.
    Anyone know what's going on?

    Podcast Update:
Jason O’Grady on today’s PowerPage podcast said that in the beta builds of leopard time machine supported airport extreme’s airport disk feature. They only dropped it in the release version of leopard. He’s confident this functionality will return.
But on today’s MacBreak Weekly podcast, Leo Laporte said as much as he loves his drobo it’s LOUD when it’s working. I wonder if one of his drives is failing. He also said he prefers a backup program called ChronoSync. I’ve never used it.

  • Network Shared Hard Drive Mac/PC

Not really sure where to start this topic, but this seemed a good place to start.
Like many of us out there, I have tons GB's of music, video, and pictures stored and backed-up. Well, after doing some research and some hard decision making I bought an 300GB; should be enough for a while, ethernet external hard drive to store everything. Got a Western Digital that is both WIN/MAC compatible of course.
    Here are my questions:
    1. What kind of issues will I run into? Some days I am 100% on my iMac and sometimes 100% on my ole Dell. NEVER at the same time mind you. Both run iTunes and I am sure I will have both acecssing my music folder on the shared drive. Again, NOT at the same time.
    2. Putting pictures on the shared drive will hopfully give me easy access from my iMac with iPhoto. I am tired of burning CDs, using my flash media, etc. to transfer to my Mac. Will there be any issues here?
    3. I plan to back up all my videos from iTunes to the shared drive. Will there be any problem with iTunes on a Mac and iTunes on a PC accessing the same files?
Clearly, I do not mean they will be accessing at the same time!!! I can see how that would really f'things up. Thanks for the help and advice.

    Craig,
I don't know the answer for sure, but here's what I think:
Mac OSX is based on Unix, which is an operating system that's case sensitive and "case preserving". Windows is neither case sensitive nor case preserving. Even if iTunes uses the exact same file arrangement on the Windows version as it does on the Mac version (and most likely that's the case) my feeling is that eventually you may find a situation in which a song added on your windows computer will not be found by the mac even though it's showing in iTunes.
Have you considered using iTunes' capability for sharing playlists? If you have either of those computers turned on at all times, you could leave iTunes running in the background, sharing the entire library. That way you could listen to songs on both systems without problems.
    I hope this helps. Regards,
    Julian

  • Time machine back up of shared hard drive that is connected to AE

I have 1TB MyBook external drive that I want to use as storage connected to my Airport Extreme. Naturally, this allows anyone connected to the wifi to access the files on there. I also have a second drive connected to the Airport Extreme. That one is for my Time Machine Backups.
    My question is this:
Am I able to use that second 2TB hard drive to back up both my iMac and also the shared storage drive that is attached to the Airport Extreme and not directly to my iMac?? That would make me a very happy man if it could do that!
    I appreciate any help!
    Thanks

basically yes. you should get a powered USB hub.
however, using TM to back up to a drive connected to a AEBS is not supported ! it may work, even for a while, but eventually corruption of the backups may occur.
here's what Apple says about such a setup: _*Disks that can be used with Time Machine*_.

  • Backing up with time machine to a shared hard drive on a network

    HI,
Here's my situation: I have a 2011 Macbook Pro, 2009 iMac, and the last generation Macbook that they made. All 3 computers have Lion. I have a WD 4tb ext hard drive that I had been using to backup my MBP and everything worked fine.  So, I decided i wanted to backup my iMac and Macbook to that same hd, which is obviously plugged into my MBP. It worked fine, both computers were able to backup simultaniously and all was great.
However, since I take my MBP with me places, the other computers wont backup when it isn't there (obviously). So, I decided to plug the ext hard drive into the iMac and use that as the central computer for the others to backup to (which makes way more sense). So, I formatted the drive (I didn't have any real need for any of the backups, and I wanted to start fresh), plugged it into the iMac, and set it up to be shared. I can backup to it from the iMac no problem, but I can't do it from either the MBP or the MB. I can access the hard drive on the laptops (mount it, copy and read files from it, ect), but when i go to set a backup disk in time machiine, it just isn't one of the drives to choose from.  In the old configuration, the networked drive appeared as a possible drive to backup to in time machine preferences with out any problem, so I'm not sure what's wrong!
    Any help would be GREAT!

That's what it should be. Take a look at Pondini's Time Machine FAQ #22:  http://Pondini.org/TM/22.html
Also, make sure you are sharing via AFP and not SMB.

  • Library Management: External Hard Drive

I am running aperture 3 off of my laptop and, due to my hard drive filling up, hoping to house my library on an external hard drive. Ideally I would be able to set up a smart album for each project that housed photos rated 3 stars and up. The entire library would be housed on the external, but the smart albums(photos 3 and up) would be housed/synced to my laptop.
Anyone know how to set this up?
    Thanks

Hi zuzuvela. The result you want is easy to obtain. You've conceived of the solution backwards, however, and additionally are misled by a misunderstanding of what the Aperture Library is. (It is a collection of file references, metadata, and preview images; it may or may not contain photo files.)
Keep your Aperture Library on your laptop HD. Always import to your Library. Set up a top-level Smart Album which includes only images rated 1-star or 2-star. In your workflow, know that all images you rate 1-star or 2-star are going to be stored on your external drive. Periodically connect your external drive, select all the files in your Smart Album, and using "File→Relocate Masters" move them to your external drive. That's it.
You now have a working Library on your laptop which contains references to all your photos.
. All unrated photos have Managed Masters (they are contained by your Library)
. All 1- and 2-star images have Referenced Masters (the Masters reside on your external drive)
. All 3-, 4-, and 5-star images have Managed Masters (the Masters are contained by your Library)
Read the User Manual page on the difference between Managed Masters and Referenced Masters. The essential difference is that you cannot make adjustments to or export images with off-line Masters. (This is, imho, a worthy trade-off, and the best one for you to make: you get to clear your internal drive of a lot of data of secondary value while retaining almost all the functionality you might need.)
NB: you are responsible for backing-up your Referenced Masters. Aperture does not do this.
A couple of thoughts about the Aperture Library in general -- good to keep in mind as you think this through:
The Aperture Library may or may not contain your original photo files. Aperture doesn't actually care where those files are stored -- it just needs to know where they are (and whether they are currently available). The name "Library" is ill-chosen, as it is only applicable when all of your files are converted to Managed Masters. To continue the library metaphor, it is much better to think of the Aperture "Library" as the card catalog and reference desk of a library. Sometimes the books are in the Library (you have Managed Masters). Sometimes the books are not in the Library -- they are somewhere else, and they may not even be available (you have Referenced Masters). Sometimes -- and this is extremely useful, because, face it, library shelves aren't expensive but they aren't free either -- some of your books are in the Library, and some of them are stored across the street, and some of them are in the cheap warehouse district (you have a mix of Managed and Referenced Masters).
    Good Luck.

  • Shared hard drive from USB on Airport?

Is it possible to use the usb port on an airport express to connect a usb hard drive so that it s then shared on a wireless network? Would this still work if the Airport Express is being used as an ethernet bridge (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term there - essentially what I am saying is that my AE connects to my network currently to allow music paying and printing in anther room)

Sorry but this is NOT possible. The USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY for a single compatible printer.
