Many Leopard problems

I have a couple issues. I cannot open my iphoto. When I click on the icon it opens but quickly quits on me. I no longer have spell check. Everything is the way it should be but when I double check my spelling nothing happens.
At times I cannot close my icons. I am clicking on quit but nothing is happening. A couple times I have had to force quit. When I click on restart I am getting a message about -600.
I also no longer have my Virex.
Anyone have any ideas???? Would appreciate any and all help.

An old but trusty fix for previous OS's, use the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.

  • Leopard problem loading a DVD on the machine it was burnt on ??

I burnt a DVD+R today at the "max possible" speed. After it finished I tried to watch it on the Mini - it claimed the disc was damaged. So I thought "Drat, coaster" and made another. That one, having been ejected after the burn, was refused loading by the drive. Rather than burning a third, I tried both with the DVD player connected to my TV - both played fine.
Now, I see on some forum that "this is a known Leopard problem". Anyone know anything about that?

Burning at the max possible speed is a sure path to poor finished disk. It's recommended that you burn at the slowest speed possible to produce the best disk possible. Also those in the know here recommend Verbatim DVD-R disks as the best you can use. It has the highest concentration of dyes in the various layers. What brand disk are you using.
Also I suggest you save the project to a disk image before burning. That way you can preview the project by mounting the disk image and playing it with DVD Player. If it plays OK on the computer then you can narrow the problem to the media.

  • Many small problems in Mavericks

When user experience many small problem in daily work, I feel the design is failed.
Memory management has a lot of problem, I feel my macbook is abnormal slow after I upgraded to Mavericks. Sometime, I need to wait for several sec to get what I want.
I think this problem is extreme important for OS.
When I want to start a probelm, click once, no response, click twice, pop-up 2 times after 5 sec.
Then i change my way of work, clock one time, work on other task. 5 sec later, multi desktop switch the desktop to the starting program. Then, I don't know what I was doing.
Another is sound problem, sound doesn't work sometime and need some kind of procedure to get it back.
Please don't ask me do something to solve the problem everytime when it happen. It is OS task to work it properly.
Whatever how many great feature you added is meaningless if user daily experience is bad.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec bash
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Snow Leopard problems - from my experience so far

Snow Leopard problem 1 - When Firefox 3.5.2 is launched the window doesn't appear in front, we have to manually select via alt+tab or mouse
Snow Leopard problem 2 - QuickSilver did behave odd once. When typed "T", it didn't find Terminal (shocking)
Snow Leopard problem 3 - Three/Four finger trackpad gestures not working.IMP: Not able to go back pages in Safari.

All of my Mail accounts began intermittently failing--with the exclamation point next to them.
Parallels 3 won't run, and if you have any suspended virtual machines when you upgraded to Snow, you'll be unable to shut them down to install Parallels 4. Of course, you can just rename the Parallels 3 folder. Parallels 4 is such a slow beast, I will be going back to 10.5 and 3.
System font conflicts leaving login windows with just squares for letters.
Safari is acting funky--fumbling CSS. Sites that looked fine before the upgrade were jacked up afterwards.
The good of all of this is that I was able to do a full restore from a Time Machine backup, and it worked perfectly!

  • Safari or (Snow Leopard problem?) constantly closing without warning

It happens even when only Gmail is open. No problems until I updated it last month. This ***** so bad I tried Camino and Firefox, and the same thing happens with those browsers. Is this a Snow Leopard problem?
I've sent dozens of reports to Apple and it **** me off to no end that I gave up Vista for this crap since that was working just fine. If my husband hadn't gotten this Macbook Pro for me, I'd be right back on Vista :.(

  • My 2 main Leopard problems are driving me nuts!

I just can't find an answer anywhere to my 2 main Leopard problems. I'm sure that it's something I'm doing, but just can't pin them down, and they are beginning to irritate me.
#1 is I can't make apple-H (hide application) work in any of my programs, as the button is dimmed. It's a shortcut I've used regularly for years and I miss it. I'm not using Spaces.
#2 is about drag and drop from one application to another (or from an application to a finder window). In Tiger, I could have a finder window open and also an Azureus window open (say); it was a piece of cake to drag a few torrents into my torrent folder. Same for trying to drag photos from iView to a finder folder. Now I have to drag things to the desktop, then open 2 finder windows and do my drag and drop that way. That's because as soon as I open a finder window, the program I am in disappears. Doesn't make any sense, it's much more difficult than in Tiger. Hope that all makes sense!
    Hope someone can help. Thanks.
    Andrew (in Taipei, Taiwan)

I can't help you with a defective install disk. You need to call AppleCare about that.
As for your Erase and Install I don't know what the problem is unless you have a bad disc or the installation simply went bad. Try this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting you can quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X Leopard installation.

  • Many Trash problems with leopard and no fix

    Hi
I posted that my trash is not emptying under any circumstances no one seemed to know how to solve this. i noticed that there are several people with trash issues (some not emptying until restart, others cant see the trash) i just hope that apple fix this with an update or something. meanwhile i am using a program called onyx to empty my trash and it works fine.

I am not an expert on this but i had a problem similar to what you experienced. I deleted tens of thousands of stuff at one go and it got stuck at one point. But the difference between your experience and mine is that it gave a dialog saying it cant find the file xxx to delete and also that i should click continue to proceed further. needless to say, i had to do that twenty to thirty times with each tiem a dialog popping up with same message but different file. when done, it seems to have deleted all other files except the ones it showed in dialog box. So i opened trash again and option clicked it and everything went away without any dialogs. hope that helps.
I dont know if that applies to secure emptying the trash.

  • Aperture and Snow Leopard problems

I have multiple issues with Aperture after upgrading to SL (currently on 10.6.2). The major issues are:
    (1) Whenever I import new images or make modification to existing images Aperture does not quit anymore. Command quit doesn't do anything and I have to force quit in order to exit program.
    (2) After importing new files, often not all images are shown in the project or album (although all images have been imported and the tooltip shows the correct number of images in the project/album). Furthermore, keywords searches do not work. A force quit and reopening solves this problem.
    (2) When saving or opening images the dialog box does not work properly and some folders are overlayed with black/grey boxes and things look corrupted.
Obviously, I have installed 2.1.4 and I do not have Aperture in any subfolder (it is directly in the app folder). Furthermore, I have deleted the preferences file (com.apple.Aperture.plist) but this did not help.
What to do next? Re-install Aperture? If I have to do this what docs do I have to delete and how can I avoid loosing any important information? I have a very large image library with many adjustments, keywords, rankings etc and I definitely do not want to loose any of that information. Thanks much for your help and advise.

I decided to backup up everything. I then erased the HD and reinstalled Leopard Disk 1 and 2. Did all the system updates and added all the optional software on the disks. Then installed Snow Leopard. Then installed Aperture and all updates including 2.1.4 and my printer drivers. Then followed with all my other apps like MS Office and Quicken.
    Took about 2 hours.
Everything works perfectly and is quite snappy including Aperture. No problems with any of the Aperture functions.
It's a lot of work but its easy to do if you have other things to do while the software is installing.
If you are up to all that and dont mind the time, you'll be happy plus you now have a clean, fresh disk.

  • Serious Leopard problems

Since installing Leopard, I have at least 5 applications that will randomly quit (Safari, Firefox, Excel, Final Draft, iTunes) and weird other problems like freezing on quickbooks. Should I go back to Tiger? How would I even do that? Does anyone else have these issues? Help!

Interesting. I have spent many hours on my new machine with Leopard during the past week with the only crashes being Appleworks spreadsheets when I had more than 12 files open with a full "Recent Files" folder. Deleting that folder eliminated the problem. I did start with a clean machine however, and didn't do any importing of anything except by the Finder off my backup drive. I even used the Finder to replace the mailboxes in the library folder which seems to have worked perfectly.
I would try backing up all your files and doing a full erase and starting over. Leopard doesn't come with some neat things that are included on the Tiger installation disk, so you might want to install it first and then upgrade to Leopard.
I should point out that this is my lay opinion, I am not an expert, just lucky perhaps.

  • Leopard problem connecting with wifi AP using WPA PSK instead of WEP

I cannot connect via Airport to Speedtouch 580i accesspoint using WPA PSK.
WEP works just fine, but using WPA PSK I keep getting the message invalid password and then cannot connect wirelessly.
Tiger as of version 10.4.3 through .11 worked flawlessly via WPA PSK with the same AP.
I installed 10.5.4 Leopard from scratch and used combo 10.5.5 and and a few days ago combo update 10.5.6 but problem remain.
After the clean install I used migration assistent to get user data and logins from Tiger into Leopard, having used an image made with SuperDuper.
I have read many support forums and suggestions, it all didn't result in a working internet connection at all with WPA PSK :-...(
    What I did until now:
    - Disabled IPv6 for the airport interface
    - Changed to a simple WPA PSK password without CAPITALS instead of something like #A!$($D$%\T@q{|
    - Changed to a fixed channel in the wireless accesspoint instead of auto. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195706
    - Rebooted Accesspoint various times.
    - Changed to 802.11g only instead of b+g
    - Tried both TKIP and AES as encryption type
    - Disabled and re-enabled Firewall in Leopard
    - Changed to fixed ip adress instead of via DHCP for network addres assignment
    - Tried connecting with and without broadcast of SSID to AP.
    - Repaired keychain , http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5858982
    - Did various keychain changes incl deleting old values
    - Deleted some items from library, as per suggestions from forums.
In the end I have a suspicion that it all drills down to something simple, quotes (" ") are used to present the password in the password field, at least this is the case with WEP, but this does not harm the functionality for WEP as this is working alright.
With the current WPA PSK implementation it perhaps does influence, because it keeps saying invalid password. I have tested both with and without quotes and things did not improve at all.
I'm running out of ideas to solve this matter, therefore I have sent a report to Apple via their Feedback webpage.
While having using 10.5.5 fo a while I had big hopes 10.5.6 would cure the problem , unfortunately this is not the case.
Please provide more suggestions to solve this problem.

Checked Accesspoint firmware upgrade. The only difference between the current 4.2.7.25 and the latest version, 4.2.7.30 is the support of WDS i.e. expanding the wireless network by connecting 2 APs together (via WEP).
Still tried upgrading via the MAC OS X update software, it did not fire up, I think the software is not fond of Leopards
As WEP works ok with Leopard on my G4 Powerbook 12inch, I didn't want to focus further on the speedtouch because of the motto 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.'
Am going to research more on Keychain and DHCP, others are reporting issues with it along with this 'airport crisis' http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375838

  • Upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1.1 Leopard problem

I get the error (translating from italian) that it cannot find the application in the application folder.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Iphoto is in the application folder
and i am using ilife 08
this is not limited to iphoto but to all ilife08 programs when i try to update them.(i am using the automatic update in mac os)
i have repaired the disk permissions and still get the same error message! can anyone help me out?

    hixino:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are the applications located directly in the Applications folder and not in a subfolder? If if is then move the application out of the subfolder into the Applications folder. Then download the updater from the Apple Downloads page and run it manually. I believe it's safer doing it manually than with Software Update since you can avoid problems due to a disconnect of the internet during updating.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Powerbook G4 and Leopard Problems

I've had Leopard for over a month on my Powerbook G4. I went so far as to make a post here saying how smoothly the install went and that all was well. I spoke too soon. Yes, I rather like many things about Leopard and most things work. But little problems keep cropping up. I would guess that Apple did MUCH more testing with newer Intel machines before releasing Leopard, and much less with legacy machines like mine. Makes sense to put their resources where their new computers are.
Just tonight I found that iDVD does not work. It appears to load and I can create a new project, but nothing works beyond that.
Final Cut Pro works in almost all ways, thankfully, but Log and Capture will not work with HDV devices. Works fine with DV.
Leopard is very erratic about recognizing older Windows computers on my small office network. Does work perfectly with other Macs on 10.4 or later.
Before installing Leopard, I did backup all my data, of course. Should have done a mirror image so I could have gone back to very stable 10.3.9, but I did not. Going back is intimidating, especially since I cannot seem to find many of the old updater downloads on the Apple website now.
Are others having problems with Leopard on G4 machines?

    Thomas,
I installed Leopard on my PowerBookG4 about a month ago. So far, so good.
All of my Adobe apps work fine; Office 2004 works just fine; mail is ok. For a while, I thought the chronic Airport problems had gone away but I still have to work with some of my network express units from time to time. (Unplug & replug="work with"...then they reestablish their respective connections). Dropouts with iTunes (AirTunes) have not happened with Airport under Leopard. This is huge!
My printer drivers acted up at first but seemed to have mysteriously worked out the 'bugs' on their own.
If I had to criticize Leopard at all, I would say the only real disappointment so far is with repairing permissions. It takes far longer than it should. Finder is not as snappy as it was in Tiger...connecting to the .Mac servers is a little slow. (iDisk)
But all in all, I really like the new OS. I rebooted a few times to my Tiger clone (Thank you *_a brody_* for all your advice on cloning drives) when I had some issues with the printer drivers, but those issues are now gone.
iDVD works ok for me as well.
Stick with it...Leopard is good stuff!

  • Leopard problems on G5 dual 2 ghz early

I recently installed leopard and now wish I didn't. My computer seems slower now, my webpages on safari don't load like they used to, my fans for no reason spin up and get loud then slow down. I'm also having sleeping problems ( it doesn't fall asleep by itself). The system has 1.5 g of ram. Can someone please help me? I'm wanting to know if I can revert back to the previous OS that I had.

Well, at this point there are several options. Presuming you have a drive that you can back up your files to, you could do a complete reformat of your drive and re-install 10.5 "from scratch" Although this would involve re-installing your apps and reconfiguring your prefs, it would, in the long run, probably be the easiest and "cleanest" way to go. Or, you could perform an "Archive and Install" which would preserve all of your apps and settings. This might be worth a try but I don't like to recommend this with a system that has more than a few minor issues. None of the issues you are having are unique and there are a lot of threads on every one of them. So you could search the forum for each one and probably work through them one at a time. But, since you are asking me to +"Let me know what you think"+, if it were me, I would take the first path after backing all data and my home folder. There are just too many little things (incompatible apps, haxies, device drivers, etc.) that could explain the problems you are describing and rather than spend the time to root them out, I would feel better about just starting out with a "clean" system.

    thanks Ralph for your interest.
Before I had 10.5. I recently bought snow leopard and I installed. After installation I click on "software update". This computer has 110GB hard drive and 2GB memory ram.
With 10.5 works ok I never had this freezes problem.
