Many-to-many relationship question

Hello,
Could you please provide an EXAMPLE of sun-cmp-mappings.xml with many-to-many relations (using a secondary table).
Thanks.

I think it is important to make the distinction between the mapping of many-to-many relations (join tables) and secondary tables.
There is a many to many mapping in the samples. The roster sample has it. You can read through the sun-cmp-mappings.xml file for that to see how to do a join table. The fields that you want to look at are Player's teams field and Team's players field.
The secondary table allows you to map columns from multiple tables into a single entity bean. For example:
I may have an Address bean with the usual fields; street, city, state, and postal/zip code.
I may need to map this Bean onto a database with the following tables
ADDR
STRT_KEY,
ZIP_KEY
and
STRT
STRT_KEY,
STRT_STRING
ZIP
ZIP_KEY,
CITY_STRING,
STATE_STRING
In my mapping for the Address bean's zip field, the mapping would need to look like:
<entity-mapping>
<ejb-name>Address</ejb-name>
<table-name>ADDR</table-name>
<cmp-field-mapping>
<field-name>city</field-name>
<column-name>ZIP.CITY_STRING</column-name>
</cmp-field-mapping>
<secondary-table>
<table-name>ZIP</table-name>
<column-pair>
<column-name>ADDR.ZIP_KEY</column-name>
<column-name>ZIP.ZIP_KEY</column-name>
<column-pair>
</secondary-table>
The secondary table element defines join between the two tables, so the field can resolve to a single value.

  • One to many relationship question.

    Let's say we have table1 and table2
    Table1 has ID, and let's say Name for fields.
    Table2 has ID, and let's say SSN for fields.
    This is not so, but illustrates my points well.
    Table2 has many records with the same ID, who just happen to have the same SSN. That would usually be a logical conclusion.
    Table1 has only 1 of each ID in it. So you might say that ID is a foreign key in table2, except one problem. I don't think they know what primary keys are here, much less foreign keys.
    Anyway, I have to write a query where I get the ID from table1 and need the SSN from table2. That's the only place in this scenario that SSN is.
    My question is this - since this is a one to many relationship, yet I only need 1 result, how would I write this using the (+) way of notation? I am using 8i.
    Right now, I am doing something like this, using a DISTINCT:
    Select DISTINCT t1.ID, t1.Name, t2.SSN
    From table1, table2,
    Where t1.ID = t2.ID (+);
    First of all, is this the correct way of writing it?
    And second, I am wondering if, perchance for some error, there were 2 or more SSNs in table2, what would happen then? Would I get a too many rows error?
    And if so, how can I trap it and possibly get just the first occurrence of it?
    Is that even a sound way of doing it?
    Thanks for any thoughts here.

    You would need to turn your table2 into an in-line view in order to outer join to it properly. Minimally, something like:
    SELECT t1.id, t1.name, t2.ssn
    FROM table1 t1,
         (SELECT DISTINCT id, ssn
          FROM table2) t2
    WHERE t1.id = t2.id(+)If there may be multiple ssn in t2 for a single id, you will need to determine which one you want to keep and use something like:
    SELECT t1.id, t1.name, t2.ssn
    FROM table1 t1,
         (SELECT id, ssn
          FROM (SELECT id, ssn,
                       ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY id,
                                          ORDER BY column_that_makes_it_first) rn
                FROM table2)
          WHERE rn = 1) t2
    WHERE t1.id = t2.id(+)This should work on 8.1.7.4 Enterprise Edition. If you have a different version, then the analytic function may not work so you would need something more like:
    SELECT t1.id, t1.name, t2.ssn
    FROM table1 t1,
         (SELECT id, ssn
          FROM (SELECT id, ssn, rownum rn
                FROM (SELECT id, ssn,
                      FROM table2
                      ORDER BY id, column_that_makes_it_first))
          WHERE rn = 1) t2HTH

  • New User Question : Many to Many relationship Association

    Hi
    I am trying to code a many to many relationship between two entities. One of my entity is named View and the other is Column.
    I am trying to use the @JoinTable annotation and for the table property in the annotation I am specifying a table column_view (which I have created in the database).
    My associative table has other fields, apart from the primary key of view and column entities. This makes me feel that my current way of using @JoinTable would not work under this condition and I have to create two onetomany mappings like
    Column -> OnetoMany -> ColumnView <- OnetoMany <- View.
    Am I right in my approach or is there anyother way out to represent such manytomany relationships.

    Why other fields are required in your relationshipt table?
    have only two columns and perform @ManyToMany.
    @JoinTable has to be used only on owning side.
    user (mappedBy ) on the other side
    thanks

    hi all,
    Am working in EJB.Now we are coding for many to many relationship.

    Companyand Salary register are the two tables having details of it.And the intermediate table having pk of company and salary register is Company_salary_register table,I want to add the value in this table having seperate interface.
    How to model it? I have given the add method of this company_salary_register table in company bean.I am getting the value of this one as collection.But it is asking me to add the values as the instance of LocalSalary(interfaceand entitybean).If i type cast it as Local Salary Class castexception occurs
    Please help me.Even Material of Modelling Many to Many relationship in EJB is enough.
    thanx in advance,

    THaaaaaanks alottt for the quick reply...
    I used the first way to insert the document and i was successful...
    but thing is that..
    when i do

  • Many to many relationship mapping.

    Hi
    I have a basic question on how to create a good java class model (POJOs) based on the database model.
    I Have to follwing tables
    Table1 with columns as
    ID1
    name
    description
    Table2 with columns as
    ID2
    dateCreated ..etc.
    Since there is a many to many relationship between table1 and table2
    So to map that we have a table3 with columns
    ID3
    ID1 // fk table1
    ID2 // fk table2
    browserName
    startTime
    endTime
    So when I create Java classes:
    // corresponding to table 1
    Class MyTable1
    private Integer ID1;
    private List ID2; // to map with the table2
    // corresponding to table 2
    Class MyTable2
    private Integer ID2
    private List ID1; // to map with table 1
    In this way I can create my classes. Is this the best way to put it together.
    And where to put the attributed specific to table3. Like the BrowserName and the StartTime and the EndTime.
    Any suggestion please.
    Thanks.

    Your names leave a lot to be desired. Let's start with an example. Suppose I have a problem involving employees and the tasks assigned to them. An employee may have any number of tasks assigned to them and a task can be assigned to any number of employees. The assignment itself has more attributes: when it was assigned, its priority and so on.
    public interface Employee {
        Long getId(); //etc...
        Set<Assignment> getAssignments();
        void setAssignments(Set<Assignment> assignments);
    public interface Task {
        Long getId(); //etc...
        Set<Assignment> getAssignments();
        void setAssignments(Set<Assignment> assignments);
    public interface Assignment {
        Long getId(); //etc...
        Employee getEmployee();
        void setEmployee(Employee employee);
        Task getTask();
        void setTask(Task task);
    }This assumes you want to navigate in all directions: from an employee to their assignments, from a task to its assignments and from an assignment to it employee and task.

  • [ADF] Adding/deleting entries in a many-to-many relationship

    I am using JDeveloper 10.1.3 and the ADF BC / ADF Model / ADF Faces / JSF technology stack.
    For this question, I am using the SRDemo application as an example, specifically the many-to-many relationship between USERS and PRODUCTS (the Staff Expertise relationship), outlined in red in this schema diagram: Image Link
    Users may have any number of product expertise areas and many users may have the same product expertise area. For the purposes of this example I have added two reference fields from the PRODUCT table into the ExpertiseAreas VO (Name and Description), outlined in red in this data control palette section: Image Link
    I have created a page which shows the details of a user (1), along with a table showing the expertise areas the user has (3), and a table of all the products available (2), numbered on this design page: Image Link and corresponding to the numbered data controls on this data control palette section: Image Link, where 1 is rendered as an ADF Read-only Form, 2 is an ADF Read-only Table with a tableSelectMany element in the selection facet, and 3 is also an ADF Read-only Table.
    What I am trying to do is have the tableSelectMany element reflect which of the products are linked to the current user in the expertise areas relationship (by having the checkbox for currently linked products checked), and when you check or uncheck a product's checkbox, it should add or remove the row in the EXPERTISE_AREAS intersection table, respectively (asume for this example that there are default values for Expertise Level and Notes).
    So far I have been following the process used in section 19.8 of the ADF Developer's Guide for Forms/4GL Developers, which describes how to set up a selectManyShuttle which implements the adding and deleting functionality. So I have a Client Interface method in the Application Module, updateSkillsForCurrentStaff (described in section 10.6.7.2), and I have a selection listener for the assignment table in the backing bean for the page, which calls the updateSkillsForCurrentStaff method:
    public void selectionChanged(SelectionEvent event)
      BindingContainer bc = getBindings();
      DCIteratorBinding productsIB = (DCIteratorBinding)bc.get("ProductListIterator");
      Set keys = getTable1().getSelectionState().getKeySet();
      Iterator iter = keys.iterator();
      List productIds = new Vector();
      while (iter.hasNext())
        String product = ((Key)iter.next()).toStringFormat(true);
        productsIB.setCurrentRowWithKey(product);
        ViewRowImpl productRow = (ViewRowImpl)productsIB.getCurrentRow();
        Number productId = (Number)productRow.getAttribute("Id");
        productIds.add(productId);
      OperationBinding ob = bc.getOperationBinding("updateSkillsForCurrentStaff");
      Map pm = ob.getParamsMap();
      pm.put("productIds", productIds);
      ob.execute();
    All of this works, but I can't work out how to link the selection state of the assignment table to the expertise areas that are linked to the user. Also I think the method listing above must be a bit of a hack, but I don't know enough about this to know if there's an easier way of doing it.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Have a look at this example I cooked up for you.
    http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/2006/10/03.html#a739
    It might not be the first way one thinks to implement something, but it illustrates a very interesting, model-centric approach to the problem you propose.
    My feelings won't be hurt if you prefer a more view-centric approach, but I wanted to illustrate what was a maximally-model-centric solution (in fact, which doesn't even require a backing bean!) If you like a more view-centric approach, I can help you figure out what's wrong with your key-handling above. For one, I would probably start by passing the Set of Key's directly to the middle tier application module method to eliminate client-side code.
    Check it out and let me know what you think. Try it directly in the Business Components Tester to appreciate one of the benefits a model-centric solution can bring.

  • Many to Many relationship betwee dimension and fact tanle

    Hello Gurus,
    I have a little question about many to many realtionship between fact and dimension table. The situation is as follows.
    Consider there is a fact table F1 and two dimension tables D1 and D2. D1 is joined to F1 with 1 to many relationship. D1 is joined to D2 with again one to many relationship ( Note: D1:D2 = 1:N and D1:F1 = 1:N). I am able to model this by merging D1 and D2 into one dimension table in BMM layer by adding them as logical table sources and creating logical table source join. I have built simple reports and the data returnned is fine. However, I would just like to know what could be the drawbacks of such a model.
    We have many other dimesions joined to the fact table and users have access to the answers that means they would could what ever report they feel like. Hence, would just like to know in what cases this model could break which means reports would give wrong data because of a many to many relationship between one of the fact and dimension table.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Copter,
    Even I had modeled it by reading this link before. In the situation explained by me dimension D1 is doing the job of table Rules ( as explained in link). The model is fine.
    However, my point is to undersatnd in which scenerios this model will break. As already explained, the fact table is joined to various other dimensions, there could be situations in which users select columns from various dimensions and facts randomly.
    Hence, which are the scenerios where I might get erroneous counts of meassures. Further, if someone feels this model is correct and would not break in any scenerio then please reply.

  • Representing many-to-many relationships

    The data structure I am working with is a many-to-many relationship between clients and contacts, managed by a client_contact intersection table
    I have been rather unsuccessfully trying to use the JHeadstart generator to generate a master-detail style relationship between clients and contacts. The new intersection shuttle is great for being able to be maintain the intersection table and have that working fine but I would also like to set up a master-detail group
    I have created a ContactsForClient view that combines the Contacts and Client_contacts entities with a bind parameter of client id and created a view link between clients VO and the ContactsForClient VO. Setting this up in the JHeadstart generator works fine for displaying and modifying the associated contacts - but adding new contacts is where the problem lies. The ContactsForClient group uses a table structure with empty rows at the bottom for inserting new contacts. I am unsure of how to be able to manage the client_contact instersection table in behind the scenes. The ClientContactsImpl fires first - at which stage I only have client id and not the contact id. I want to be able to force the ContactsImpl to run first and retrieve the DB Sequence that was used to populate the contact id on the contacts table, using that to populate the client-contacts table.
    I saw some code to force a new dept to be posted before the emp record and thought I could utilise that but it does not work
      public void postChanges(TransactionEvent e) {
        System.out.println("In postChanges");
        if (getPostState() == STATUS_NEW)
          System.out.println("Status is new");
          ContactsImpl newContact = getContacts();
          if (newContact != null) {
            System.out.println("newContact not null");
            if (newContact.getPostState() == STATUS_NEW) {
              newContact.postChanges(e);
              // retrieve DB sequence used to populate contacts ct_id
              // and use to set clientcontacts ct_id
              System.out.println("newContact changes posted");
        super.postChanges(e);
      }newContact is always null ! I realise I could create separate screens to create the contacts and then the intersection-shuttle to assign them to a client but is there anyway I can do this in a way that mimics normal master-detail JHeadstart functionality ?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated !

    Managed to get my problem solved - I was over-complicating things ! I did however run into the reason (after a substantial process of elimination) why the postchanges method was not working as expected.
      public void postChanges(TransactionEvent e) {
        if ((getPostState() == STATUS_NEW) || (getPostState() == STATUS_MODIFIED)) {
          EntityImpl gio = getGoodsInOut();
          if (gio != null) {
            if (gio.getPostState() == STATUS_NEW) {
              gio.postChanges(e);
        super.postChanges(e);
      }My master EO is GoodsInOut and my detail EO is product. When I was running this code from the ProductsImpl, the getGoodsInOut() was always returning a null value and therefore I was unable to force the posting of the master before the detail. The problem turned out to be a "before insert for each row" trigger on the GoodsInOut table. This trigger was just setting the sequence but for some reason, after firing, causes the relationship between the GoodsInOut master and the Products detail to be lost, with getGoodsInOut() returning null. As soon as I dropped the database trigger and set the sequence in the EO's create method - it worked fine. I realise this is a "JDeveloper" question rather than a "JHeadstart" question so I will post this on the JDeveloper forum as well but thought you may have some ideas on why the database trigger is causing that behaviour and also how I can still retrieve the GoodsInOut EntityImpl with a database trigger (want this for auditing purposes) - perhaps make the call to getGoodsInOut at an earlier stage in the processing (ie before the database trigger runs) ?

  • Complex many to many relationships

    I am new to Oracle ADF and i have a question about associations.
    I have 3 business objects: User, Position and Country. A User can have different Positions for each Country. Therefore, i decided to create another BO, named UserPosition which has 4 attributes: Id, UserId, PositionId and CountryId.
    I wonder which is the best way to define associations for these objects.
    Should i define three "1 to *" associations between each BO's and UserPosition?
    Thanks.

    Usually if you have two tables with many-to-many relationship, you would have third table and its PK should be made of from 1st and 2nd tables. I think you are right. You need the 4th one with a new PK.

  • JPA, how to write a service to persist objects in a 1-to-many relationship

    i am using JPA for data persistence. i have two objects that are involved in a one-to-many relationship. for example, i have an object, Company, and Company can have one or more, Employee. i then define a service called, CompanyDao, which has the usual create-read-update-delete (CRUD) operations. my problem is that when i instantiate a new Company with new Employees and call CompanyDao.create(Company), i keep getting an exception.
    Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails (`demo`.`employee`, CONSTRAINT `employee_ibfk_1` FOREIGN KEY (`companyId`) REFERENCES `company` (`id`))
    i have an intuition on why this is happening. when i call CompanyDao.create(Company), the newly instantiated Company doesn't yet have an id (its unique identifier). that is why when it tries to insert the Employees of Company, i get this problem. but, my question is, shouldn't JPA take care of all of this for me? shouldn't it know that it is creating a new Company, will have to insert it, will have to retrieve the unique id (generated) and then populate the employee table with this id?
    i was thinking about this problem, and i thought maybe i could insert the company first and then the employees later. however, the problem is, once i insert the company, how do i get its unique id? i cannot query for it any other way (i.e. by name) that will return a unique result.
    if anyone knows of a good, comprehensive tutorial on how to write a service demonstration CRUD operations on objects with one-to-many relationship, please let me know.

    Hi,
    Could you please send CompanyDao.create(Company) code so that we can dig in to problem.

    Extended Many to Many Question
    Really there isn't any code to show. The recommendation is to create a class to represent the relationship. See link above for more details on the issue.

  • To-Many relationship and selection from a lookup table

    I have a core data table that represents radios called 'Radio' and another that represents types of modulation (AM, FM, USB etc.) called 'Modulation'. I have defined a to-many relationship form 'Radio' to 'Modulation'. The 'Modulation' table is fixed in that I have defined the set of records in the table and I don't want the normal user to modify this.
    What I do want is the user to be able to manipulate the 'Radio' records, and in particular be able to select a 'Radio' record. I have set up NSArrayControllers for both entities and they are used by two NSTableViews. So far everything is working nicely.
    I want the user to be able to select a 'Radio' in the table and have the 'Modulation' table show the 'to-many' relationship by selecting the (multiple) entries that apply. Also I want the user to be able to select and deselect 'Modulation' records and have them reflected in the core data relationship.
    I have tried several things involving the 'Selected Indexes' bindings on both the 'Modulation' table and the NSArrayController (pointing back to the 'Radio' controllers 'selected' entry with the key path being the to-many relationship name but this seems to either throw lots of 'not key-value coding compliant' messages or stops the 'Modulation' from displaying anything. Obviously I'm not doing this right!!!!
    Can some kind soul please tell me how this can be done?
    Thanks
    Susan

    At least I'm consistent is being able to ask unanswerable questions!
    I got around this my creating a delegate routine that was called on each change of selection and did the necessary record selection in code.

    if i have 2 tables with 0 to many realtionship. can i create referential integrity constraint between them?
    In other words how can i tell whether the records in table A(child table) are not orphan records and have 0 to many relationship with table B(parent table) ?
    Right not there is no constraint defined on both tables.

    ThanksUmm, the parent would alsways be on the 0 side of the relationship. That is, a parent can have 0 or more chilldren, but a child must have one parent, no orphans allowed. The FK constraint would be something like:
    alter table A add constraint a_fk
       foreign key (a_column_from_a) references b (pk_column);John

  • Newbie: one to many relationship SQL error

    Greetings all-
    This is probably a slam dunk for you JDO experts. I'm a JDO newbie, working
    with an existing schema in MySQL. I have a one to many relationship between
    two tables:
    Table "company":
    Fields:
    company_id: int(11) -- primary key
    name : varchar(64)
    division : varchar(64)
    Table "company_products"
    Fields:
    company_id: int(11) -- foreign key to table company
    product_name: varchar(64)
    product_description: varchar(64)
    So, I created the corresponding classes:
    public class Company {
    private int companyID;
    private String company_name;
    private String division;
    // Array of CompanyProduct
    private ArrayList companyProducts;
    // .. methods omitted
    public class CompanyProduct {
    private int companyID;
    private String productName;
    private String productDesc;
    // Methods omitted
    Then I created the "package.jdo" file:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <jdo>
    <package name="com.packexpo.db">
    <class name="Company">
    <extension vendor-name="tt" key="table" value="company"/>

    </jdo>
    Enhancement works fine. I successfully query and retrive Company objects
    from the database, but as soon as I try to get the list of CompanyProducts,
    I get an SQL Error:
    javax.jdo.JDODataStoreException: [SQL=SELECT company.COMPANYPRODUCTSX FROM
    company WHERE company.company_id = 82061]
    E0610 Error in executeQuery()
    E0606 executeQuery() error --
    E0701 Error in getResult().
    E0708 Command results in error - 1054 Unknown column
    'company.COMPANYPRODUCTSX' in 'field list'
    NestedThrowables:
    com.solarmetric.kodo.impl.jdbc.sql.SQLExceptionWrapper: [SQL=SELECT
    company.COMPANYPRODUCTSX FROM company WHERE company.company_id = 82061]
    E0610 Error in executeQuery()
    E0606 executeQuery() error --
    E0701 Error in getResult().
    E0708 Command results in error - 1054 Unknown column
    'company.COMPANYPRODUCTSX' in 'field list'
    I know i have probably set up the package.jdo file incorrectly, but I'm at a
    loss for what I did wrong.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    I need to write sql for below requirement:
    table structure is
    serial no LPN
    1 4
    2 4
    3 6
    4 6
    5 6
    6 3
    7 3
    8 3
    9 1
    I have to pick distinct 'LPN' like below:That sounds like a job for "GROUP BY lpn".
    (any serial no can be picked for the distinct LPN)It looks like you're displaying the lowest serial_no for each lpn. That's easy to do, using the aggregate MIN function.
    results needs to be as below:
    serial no LPN
    1 4
    3 6
    6 3
    9 1
    Please suggest with sql.Here's one way:
    SELECT    MIN (serial_no)   AS serial_no
    ,         lpn
    FROM      table_x
    GROUP BY  lpn
    ORDER BY  lpn     -- if wanted
    I hope this answers your question.
    If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only), and also post the results you want from that data.
    Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
    Always say which version of Oracle you're using (e.g., 11.2.0.2.0).

  • Many  to Many relationship in a Dimension.

    Hi all,
    To improve the infocube performance , we should not keep the characteristis which is have MANY TO MANY  relationship in a one dimension. My question is how to find out which characteristics is having many-many relationship.And which characteristics  is having 1 to Many relationship.

    Hi Asim,
    There are some very obvious ones.E.g product and product group. This is obviously 1-n relationship.But there are also the ones which you can not see easily.For those ones, you can check the data in datasource.Then you can see that these characteristics have 1-1, 1-n or n-m relationship. I don't know any easy way to do so except checking PSA manually.
    In fact, if we consider that you are the BW consultant who is modelling, then you must know the meanings and relationships of characteristics.So usually you won't hesitate much while creating the dimensions as you know about the characteristics.You can also ask the users and other R3 consultants when you can not guess the result.
    Here is a useful thread for the logic explained by examples:
