Whats the difference in MATCHCODE and SEARCH HELP? What to and How to choose in between if reqd.

Search Help is used whenever you want create F4 on the selection screen other than the primary key field. There are two types of Search Helps. And Match code are used in older version now SAP has been replaced with Search Help.
1 Name of a Search Help
     A search help is an object of the ABAP Dictionary with which input helps
     (F4 helps) can be defined.
     There are the following types of search helps:
     o   Elementary search helps implement a search path for determining the
         possible entries.
     o   Collective search helps contain several elementary search helps. A
         collective search help therefore provides several alternative search
         paths for possible entries.
     o   Append search helps can be used to enhance collective search helps
         delivered by SAP with customer-specific search paths without
         requiring a modification.
     The three components of the input help process described by a search
     help are the outer interface, the online behavior and the method of data
collection.
The outer interface is defined by specifying the interface parameters.
They define the context information to be used in the input help process
and the attributes to be sent to the screen by the input help.
The search help attachment defines the field contents for parametrizing
an import parameter and the fields of the input template in which the
contents of the export parameters should be returned.
The dialog behavior and data collection are defined differently for
elementary search helps and collective search helps.
The behavior of a search help can be made more flexible than usual with
search help exits.Hope it clarifies your doubt.

2. Click on change button.
3. Go to Entry help/check tab.
4. Enter the corresponding match code for the field under Search help column.
For example, field WERKS and search help H_T001W.
5. Save and active.

I am not sure if I understood the question,but if you meant how to attach a search help to parameter for which a default search help is not available,you can do that by using addition "Matchcode Object"
Parameter: a type i matchcode object 'Search Help Name'
Search Help name should be in single quotes.

Upgrade 4.7 to ECC6, match code objects need to be replaced with search hellps.
SAP note provided by client but not understanding clearly. Can any one explain me the stelps to migrate the match code objects into search hepls.

Hi,
Migration must be done by a developer who knows both matchcodes and search helps. It's not just like a procedure that you can follow without knowledge/without thinking.
It's probably a little bit like forms (but far more simple), they often need to be "migrated from scratch"
The first important point is where to find the matchcode object/IDs -> SE11 -> Utility -> Other DDic objects. Then you'll see that are the update type, base table, etc.

If you need a procedure, let's wait, and see if someone has one, but it doesn't look promising as matchcodes are not used since a long time now.

Single search help MAT1L looses matchcodes

A client asked to limit the MAT1 help for some users. We implemented succesfully a single search help with MAT0M (by erasing all others from shlp_tab) and filters by maktl and t023-begru (which has a very usefull authorization object).
Now he asked to add a second help window, and I've met an anoying difficulty. If I add the MAT1L and keep the MAT0M, I get the two help tabs, but the MAT1L help doesn't use my MAT1 user exit function. If I delete the MAT0M and keep only the MAT1L, that help uses my MAT1 user exit function, but looses it's internal matchcodes for spras and maktl.
I've been trying to adjust some parameters in shlp and shlp_tab, but so far with no success.
I need some pointers to either keep both views and have them use my user exit function or have only the MAT1L with matchcodes enabled.

Maybe you could write your restriction in search help exit(each elementrysearch help could have one exit).

· Selecting Object ® Search... () in the main menu bar of the Integration Builder
· Placing the cursor on a software component version and selecting Search... () in the context menu (only in the Integration Repository)
In this case the software component version is defined as the search criteria.
Features

Matchcodes/Search Helps/Personal Lists

I want to limit the list of values in the Unit of Measure field (MEINS in table MEREQ3211GRID) a user sees when the are Creating a Purchase requisition (ME51N). I know how to do with with a personal list but I don't want to have every user have to create their own personal llist. I would like to have a default for all users.
I have hear about matchcodes and done some searching but I don't seem to find anything about how to actually create one and how to assign it to all users. My searching also indicated matchcodes have been replaced with searchhellps which has added to my confusion.

it was match codes in the good old times, now called search help since decades or do.

Not done in ten minutes, but pretty good documentation available with function module F4IF_SHLP_EXIT_EXAMPLE.

Matchcodes were replaced with Search Helps starting with Release 4.0. Please use search helps to assign an input help to a field.
Existing matchcodes were automatically converted to search helps. A matchcode object is hereby converted to a collective search help with the same name. Each matchcode ID of the matchcode object is converted into an elementary search help with the same name and assigned to the collective search help created from the matchcode object.
A matchcode is a means of finding data records stored in the system. The matchcode is defined in the ABAP Dictionary in two steps:
You first define the relevant tables and fields for the search in a matchcode object. A matchcode object describes the set of all possible search paths for a search string.
You then create one or more matchcode IDs for a matchcode object. A matchcode ID describes a special search path for a search string. The matchcode ID defines the fields or field combinations to be used in the search.

Matchcode in OO (call the search help when the button is pressed )

Hi Guys,
I'm using the class cl_dd_document in order to fill a form that contains a input element (cl_dd_input_element) and a button element (cl_dd_button_element).
What I need to do now is to simulate (or build) a matchcode for the button.
For example, the input field is for entering the name of a table, and with the button i want to show all the tables that are elegibles for that field.
Any suggestion?

How to get search help for 2nd parameter based on the 1st parameter value

Hi all!
   I have 2 parameters (material no, revision level). I have created a search help for revision level. It has an importing parameter :material no. and one exporting parameter : revision level.When I checked it, it's giving the revision values only for the specified.
In my report , I have kept these 2 materials in my selection screen.For revision level , I have added the matchcode object which I have created. When I pressed F4 for revision level, it's giving all the values irrespective of the material no. in the first parameter. How to solve it? Please suggest.

Search help for a field with no dictionary reference

Hi!
I have created a serchhelp (see se11)
there are two included search helps nested. Each one
has it own serch help exit. First search help has two
fields and one of them is a character field (CHAR030).
It hasn't a reference dictionary table in that case.
How can I assign a search help esspecially for this field.
Its values are stored inside a internal table.

ABAP sentence/code to call search help

I created a search help in the Dictionary, and have used it in a module-pool, filling the corresponding field in the Attributes window.
But now I would like to call that search help from my code, in a different program. Is there any ABAP sentence for that purpose?

You can use the matchcode object concept.Select-options or parameters can be used in case of type 1 programs.
select-options:s_fail for failtable-failcode matchcode object fail. "Fail is the serach help you created.

In case if you want to use in parameters statement, then we can use the suffix MATCHCODE OBJECT syntax.
Eg.
