Matching apostrophe's using sql LIKE

heh anyone,
Does anyone know how to match a string that has more than one apostrophe in it under SQL using the LIKE statement..
eg. finding the data string "Surprise Me Bits 'N' Baskets '" in a database table?
...WHERE store LIKE 'Sur%' <- this doesn't work of course as it throws an SQL exception because of the '.
regards
JK

It's ok, solved it. The answer if you are using it in a JSP and feeding in the string to search on is:
String sur = from where ever...
WHERE store LIKE " + "\"" + Sur + "%\"";
cheers

  • How to use SQL LIKE in JDBC?

    Tried to use the following syntax of "LIKE" in JDBC, but doesn't work with mysql 4.1:
    String jsql =
    "select IMG_ID,IMG_File_S FROM image WHERE IMG_Region=? and IMG_Tissue LIKE '%' ? '%' ";
    pstmt = con.prepareStatement(jsql);
    pstmt.setString(1, IMG_Region);
    pstmt.setString(2, IMG_Tissue);
    what's the right syntax to use "LIKE"? thanks a lot!

    When you call preparedStatement.setString(), place the wildcards (%) in the actual string. Remove them from the SQL. Simply leave the bind variable placeholder (?).

  • Complex query using 'sql like' statement.

    Given the following basic class structure.

         public Architecture getArchitecture();

         public void setName(String name);
    public Resources {
         private String name;
         public String getName();
         public void setName(String name);
    we want to be able to do a query like:
         find all Projects where (Project.name.indexOf("a") > 0) &&
    (Project.architecture.name.indexof("b") > 0)
    In essence a "like" comparison across String properties of the JDO objects.
    Is it supported in KODO?? Anyone tried it out? Also, is it possible to
    generate SQL type query in KODO?

    Note that this relies on a current bug in Kodo -- we should escape out the
    '%' character, but we don't.
    Some day, we'll fix that bug. But, before then, we will introduce a proper,
    supported mechanism for finding records that have a string field that
    contains some substring.

  • Using MS SQL Like Queries

    Hi im running a MS sql database behind my Cold fusion site.
    I have a question on like queries that someone here will
    probably be able to
    help me
    I have a query that uses the following code
    name like '#search#%'
    The word Danger Sign appears as a name in my database.
    When I do a search on Danger Signs no records are returned.
    However when i do a search on Danger Sign my records are
    returned.
    I also tried to use
    name like '%#search#%'
    which also returned no results on Danger Signs
    Is the fact that my search term is two words causing the
    problem?
    Thanks in advance

    The ScareCrow wrote:
    > If the 2 words "Danger Sign" are in the field and you

    ken, actually i think that should work. i just tried
    SELECT uniLanguage
    FROM unicodeTest
    WHERE uniLanguage LIKE 'Chinese (%'
    and it correctly returned 2 rows (Chinese (Traditional) &
    Chinese (Simplified)).
    maybe the search term is getting bunged up?

    that's good advice. using wild cards in LIKE where clauses
    makes sql server do a
    table scan instead of using an index (unless the wild card is
    at the end of the
    search term). ms's full text indexing wins awards for it's
    search. i normally
    use it instead of verity.

  • Using the LIKE operator with wildcards to match names

    I am using SQL in ColdFusion 9 to match names in an MS Access 2003 database table.
    The Visitors field of MyTable contains the name "Smith" in six records.
    1. Smith Jones Wilson
    2. Smith, Jones, Wilson
    3. Smith(Jr.), Jones, Wilson
    4. Jones Wilson Smith
    5. Wilson Smith Jones
    6. Smith
    7. Smithson, Jones, Wilson
    8. Jones, Wilson, Arrowsmith
    To find out which records contain the name Smith (but not Smithson or Arrowsmith) I now need to write four "OR" lines:
    WHERE MyField LIKE 'Smith[!a-zA-Z]%'  (finds only the Smiths in records 1, 2 and 3)
             OR MyField LIKE '%[!a-zA-Z]Smith'  (finds only the Smith in record 4)
           OR MyField LIKE '%[!a-zA-Z]Smith[!a-zA-Z]%' (finds only the Smith in record 5)
           OR MyField = 'Smith'   (finds only the Smith in record 6)
    I would like to know how to combine these four lines into one which would find all six records containing Smith.
    Thank you for your help.

    As this is a SQL-specific question, you might be better off asking it on a SQL forum?  Does Access even support regexes?
    For a CF the regex you'd be after "\bsmith\b".  You should read the Access regex reference to see if it supports this.  A CF regular expression is no use to you here as the comparison needs to be done on the DB,  not in CF.

  • How to match consecutive underscores using LIKE?

    Maybe it's late in the day and I'm overlooking something obvious, but I can't seem to match consecutive underscores in a string using the LIKE operator:
    select case when 'abc_d_ef' like '%\_\_%' escape '\' then 'what the...?' else 'good' end from dual
    =>
    what the...?
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Yes, I thought of that; however, our application supports several database engines (sqlserver, asa9, oracle), and we permit users to enter LIKE expressions to filter grids. Transforming a LIKE expression to a REGEXP programmatically is a non-trivial task I'd prefer to avoid.
    Fortunately our users don't tend to use underscores much, so I'll probably just leave this as a "known issue" and hope Oracle fixes it in a future patch.
    Thanks again,
    Ben
    (After some more thought, doing a LIKE -> REGEXP_LIKE transform is probably not too bad, it's just a little complicated by the character escaping.
    ... After even more thought I remembered why I didn't want to do this: to support all possible cases I'd have to do the transformation as a pure SQL expression.)

  • Using the LIKE keyword in a SQL query

    Does anyone have an example using the Database Connectivity Execute Query vi and the LIKE keyword? I would like to do something like:
    SELECT TestNum, TestType FROM tests WHERE DeviceType ='Paul_AF125_Ver1' AND DeviceID = 'Test1' AND (TestType LIKE "Cyclic Voltammetry*")
    It works fine if I say LIKE "Cyclic Voltammetry" (without the *) but if I put the * in there, I get no records.
    I'm using Microsofts SQL Server Desktop Engine (comes with Access).
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Paul-
    Thank you for contacting National Instruments. I don't have an example program, but I did find some information for you.
    LIKE - similar to.
    Using the LIKE command, you can use the wildcard symbol %. To find names starting with J : names LIKE 'J%'; Ending in s ? name LIKE '%S'; You can use more than one % charactor too : names LIKE '%sam%'; Also, LIKE is not case sensitive.
    What you have written, may work if you change the wildcard syntax from * to %.

  • Help Using SQL*Plus Format Commands (like TTITLE) in Packages

    Where (within a package) can/should SQL*Plus format commands such as TTITLE, COLUMN & BREAK be coded?

    A package is coded in PL/SQL.
    TTITLE, COLUMN and BREAK are SQL*Plus commands, they cannot be used in PL/SQL.
    If you want to output data (using dbms_output) in your package, you'll have to implement the features yourself. But probably just using SQL*Plus is better in your case.

    3. I create a view link to create master-detail relationship for these 2 view objects.
    masterview.SourceBlock (1)->detailview.SourceBlock (*).
    4. I create a tree table using these 2 view objects with master-detail relationship.
    When I set default value for variable bindings of these 2 view objects and the matching records exist, tree table can work well. I can expand the master row to display detail row in UI.
    But I need to pass in dymamic parameter value for variable bindings of these 2 view objects, tree table cannnot work again. when I expand the master row and no detail row are displayed in UI.
    I am sure that I pass in correct parameter value for master/detail view objects and matching records exist.

            System.out.println("Before MasterView1Iterator ShiftModeCode="+ vo.ensureVariableManager().getVariableValue("ShiftModeCode"));
            vo.ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("DateFrom", dateFrom);

            vo1.executeQuery();
            System.out.println("after DetailView1Iterator vo1.getEstimatedRowCount()="+ vo1.getEstimatedRowCount());
    5.  What's wrong in my implementation?  I don't have no problem to implement such a tree table if using simple master-detail tables view object, but now I have to use such 2 view objects using complex SQL for my requirement and variable bindings are necessary for detail view object although I also think a bit strange by myself.

                if (rs != null) {
                    ViewObject accessorVO = rs.getViewObject();
                    accessorVO.setNamedWhereClauseParam("LowSalary", lowSalary);
                    accessorVO.setNamedWhereClauseParam("HighSalary", highSalary);
                executeQuery();
    but I have a quesiton in this way. in code snippet, it is first getting current row of current master VO to determine if update variables value of detail VO. in my case, current row is possibly null after executeQuery() of master VO and  I have to change current row manually like below.
    any idea?
                DCIteratorBinding dc = (DCIteratorBinding)ADFUtil.evaluateEL("#{bindings.SSForecastSourceBlockView1Iterator}");
                ViewObject vo = dc.getViewObject();
                vo.ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("DateFrom", dateFrom);
                vo.ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("DateTo", dateTo);
                vo.ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("ShiftModeCode", shiftModeC);
                vo.ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("TerminalCode", terminalCode);
                vo.executeQuery();
                vo.setCurrentRowAtRangeIndex(0);
                ((SSForecastSourceBlockViewImpl)vo).synchornizeAccessorVOVariableValues();

  • I'd love to see a way to create Smart Playlists with a raw (SQL-like) lang.

    I'm not sure if this is the proper place to put a request, but if any of you developers are out there looking for ideas here's one I (and I'm sure many other power users) would love.
    Give is a way to create smart playlists with nested logic or using an SQL-like query language. Currently when matching multiple properties of songs we have an all-or-nothing approach to AND's and OR's which is quite limiting if you want to do something like.
    "All songs with a rating of 2+ and a genre of electronica or metal"
    Currently the only way to do this is to first create a smart playlists for all songs with a genre of electronica or metal, and then create a second playlist which is songs with a rading of 2+ and in the first playlist.
    While this trickery will allow you to achieve any goal you could imagine, it get's quite messy very quickly.
    It'd be much easier (for someone like me) to just be given a raw interface that would allow me to do something like
    [Songs matching the clause]
    rating > 2
    AND
    genre = 'Metal'
    OR
    genre = 'Electronica'
    AND
    artist 'Iron Maiden'

    Great idea.

    I'm a SAP Crystal Report, version for Visual Studio 2010 Beginner
    my ingredients are
    1.windows 7 ultimate service pack1
    2.sql server 2008 standard edition
    3.visual studio 2010 pro
    4.SAP Crystal Report, version for visual studio.net
    I was created a report named customersByCity.rpt using OLE DB (ADO) -> Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server -> I'm supply Server, User ID, Password and Database. I assume me using SQL Server Authentication for my report
    Then, my ASP.NET files as following
    //ASP.NET

    1st scenario
    When in a runtime, it's keep appear a dialog box. This dialog box ask me to suppy Server, User ID, Password and Database. Once all information is supplied, my report display the data as expected
    2nd scenario
    I change my report using OLE DB (ADO) -> Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server -> checked on Integrated Security. I just choose Server, and Database. I assume me using Windows Authentication
    When in a runtime, there's no dialog box as above. My report display the data as expected. really cool
    Look's like, when report using SQL Server Authentication there's some problem. but, when report using Windows Authentication, it's fine.
    I'm looking for comment. Please help me

    Hello,
    MS SQL Server 2008 requires you to install the MS Client Tools for 2008.
    Once install then update all of your reports to use the SQL Native 10 as the OLE DB driver.
    The try again, if it still fails search, lots of sample log on code in this forum.
