MBA 2012 13" model, too hot when gaming?

Hi All,
I have a 13" MBA 2012 model. I installed Win7 and played Warcraft III on that. The thing I am worried about is that after playing for a while, the core temperature goes up to somewhere near 100C degree. I am not sure whether this is good for the laptop.
I guess the fan should help somehow but I never heard any noise from the fan. When will the fan starts to operate on high speed?
I think a lot of reviews are saying this 2012 model MBA should be able to play mainstream games, not to mention legancy game like Warcraft III. I know there are softwares I can use to reset the fan speed. But, is that necessary? I hope MBA should be able to handle this not-so-hard problem itself.

You could use a programme to put the fans on. Otherwise get a laptop stand. I used the iLap for ages and its really good. Otherwise get one with fans built in. I'm not sure when the fans are set to cut in but i guess it must be really high as mine have never started up, but my laptop doesnt get hot at all.
Hope it helps,
Ryan

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:

  • Having problems with phone getting too hot when not in use

Hi there -- I'm trying to figure out what I can do to fix this.  Recently I had to get a replacement S3 because my original shut off mid-use and wouldn't turn back on.  The replacement has been here for about a month and in the last 2 weeks I'm having issues with it getting too hot.  The first time it happened, I had it plugged into the stock charger for about 1 1/2 hours - and I had picked it up expecting it to be fully charged but it was extremely hot and had a warning on the main screen saying that the battery was critically hot and was not charging and the phone was nearly completely dead.  I unplugged it, took the battery out and let the main phone body cool down.  After about 15 minutes, the body felt like room temperature again, so I put it all back together.  It turned on, charged normally that night and all was well.
Now for the last several days, I'm having issues again with it getting hot at random times when I'm not even using it (and not charging it).  The last time, I downloaded a temperature app and it said the phone was nearly 105 degrees, and it felt the hottest right at the home button.  Later that night after it cooled down, I noticed that the battery wasn't charging at all and was depleting rapidly on the charger.  I restarted twice with no change and then took the battery out and let it sit for several minutes.  After that it began charging again.
With it getting hot so much more often now, I'm starting to worry about this happening when I need my phone for an emergency as I spend a lot of time on the road transporting my kids to school and activities.  Is there a fix for this?  It doesn't appear to be the battery because my husband and I have the same phone and I've already swapped batteries with him - same issue for me, no issue for him.  Please help?  Thanks!

Hello Micheliu813, let's get to the bottom of this together! Are you using the same charger that came with the phone or a 3rd party charger? We can also test the phone in safe mode to see if the device heats up again. Check here for steps: http://vz.to/1kb9LUM

  • MB too hot when upgrade to 1.2GB

befor upgrade, my MB temp about 50, then after put more 1GB and still keep 256mb, MB too hot, fan run all the time, chip run at Maximun 1,83. What can i do?

Take the 1GB stick out and put the stock memory back in. If the problem has gone away then the 1GB memory is probably bad.

  • Does the new MBP with gt 750m get too hot while gaming?

I am planning to buy the new MBP with gt 750m and upgrade the cpu to intel i7-4960hq (2.6 GHz, 3.8 GHz max) but I am really confused. I am not going to use it for hardcore gaming but I will occasionally play Dota 2 and Civ 5. Additionally I will be using SolidWorks. I really want to know if it is capable of running these games/programs without generating too much heat because heat is a total dealbreaker for me.
My second question is about to CPU's heat generation. With the increase in clock speed as far as I know it is expected to generate more heat. I really want to learn if the cooling system is efficient enough for a system that has both i7-4960hq and GT 750M GDDR5.

I've had the original MBP, the 2.33 C2D, the 2.4 C2D, and just got a 2.5 C2D. I'm amazed at how much cooler the new ones run. Even doing the extended hardware test on AC power the fans never got over 3500rpm (the earlier machines would have been blasting at maximum rpm). I can run things at 100% processor tasks using both cores and still keep it on my lap. I'm just amazed at how much this hasn't been commented on. To me this is the big improvement in the new processors, the heat is now finally tolerable in an Intel based Mac laptop.

  • [Macbook5,2] GPU runs too hot when running any 3D accelerated games and shuts down.

So I recently got into running Windows on my late 2009 Macbook with the integrated Nvidia GeForce 9400M chipset.
Now, I know it has been pointed out this is not an amazing piece of graphical hardware, and that is of course understandable.
I do not see however, why when my fans run at max (6200 rpm) it can not deal with me running some games. (Whether or not I decrease the quality of the graphics seems to have no bearing on all of this.)
Interestingly enough I can run a stress test on both cores and the CPU cores only gets up to 89C and maintains that or drops down to 88C at full fan usage.
The GPU makes the computer instantly shutdown (or when I am lucky suspend, so I can wait, come back, and save) around 90C.
What is also interesting is that when I used WinE based technology on Mac OS this did not happen. My guess is this is because Mac OS does not let programs access the hardware directly (or so I have heard).
My question is basically this: Can I keep this from happening, and if so, how?
I've read articles about underclocking the CPU, but I assume that reducing the heat from the cpu would not greatly (if at all) affect the temperature of the GPU. Can I underclock the GPU?

Oh yes, just to be clear, the reason I do not "just use the WinE based technologies" is that with the added compatibility layer the games run extremely sluggish.

  • My iphone 4s gets too hot with ios 6

Hi Everyone. Just joined the community. I noticed since I upgraded to ios 6 on my iphone 4s it has been getting too hot when in using it. i noticed it would get hot when using maps and playing games. it would not get this hot too quiclky on ios 5.1.1. I also read that some iphone 5 users have the same problem as well as 4s users with ios 6. Can anyone give me some feedback and info. on this ? Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon.

Mines never did that until recently. It depends on your usage and apps.
It's basically normal to get hot, especially charging. Now if you talking about oven hot then you have a
Problem. All my friends iphone 4s does it, so it's normal. Streaming videos while multi tasking can cause it also.

  • Does 2012 mac mini get very hot when using logic pro

does 2012 mac mini get very hot when using logic pro

Are you saying that your machine does or is it an enquiry before buying ? I use a 2011 server model - well, it does get hot over a period of time, but I've very rarely heard the fan kick in, its a surprise when it does. As far as I know the casing has been specifically designed to conduct heat, rather than having any fancy grilles and so on, being so small in size. I haven't found it to be cause for concern, if that's any help.

  • When battery charging ,the left of MBP is very too hot to suffer

when charging the battery of macbook pro(101)that was bought in 2012, the left part of  the computer is too hot to suffer, which is near the range of the connector between the computer and the recharge. is it normal?  what I  worry about is that the component of computer working under high temperature will be less life.

It will not harm the computer, That is where the dc board is, it can get very hot sometimes, especially since the majority of the heat producing components are near the upper right corner too. If its very very hot, I mean like enough to burn you then maybe there is a problem.

My iPod Touch 4 repeatedly gets the iPod too hot message, even when the device and ambient temp are both cool.  Shuts itself off.  Ugh!
Is this a warranty issue or is there a fix?

  • When is it too hot for your mac pro?

I recently switched graphics cards from the x1900 ATI to their new HD 3870 because of heating issues. While the new card is not having problems my Mac did freeze when the internal temp from my SMC control read 97 degrees. At what point is hot too hot and is there some way to cool the temp besides increasing fan speed (which didnt seem to do the trick anyway)?

At that temperature for a sustained period of time over time will lead to your thermal paste on the CPU to fail. Actually, alot of the thermal paste sitting on the board will fail eventually but at high temps for sustained periods of time can't be great. And if you've ever seen iFixit's breakdown of the macbook pro, there are gobs and gobs of thermal paste all over the dang thing.... I say use away and make sure you get apple care !! hehe because if any of the problems you get are related to hardware it can always be fixed.... or swapped
But 100 C is not that hot for a CPU or GPU... in fact it's borderline warm. Most CPUs I have run up 140-165 and operate around that temperature... I think your safe for the most part. Just backup your stuff onto an external occasionaly, and if worse comes to worse make sure you have apple care and bring her on in.... I'm curious to hear what other's say about the operating temperatures. If you look in your manual Apple says normal operating temp is like 50 - 65 or something and they say 105 C should be your max....

  • My Ipod touch 2nd gen. was working fine but when I tried to charge from my PC the Ipod start getting too hot and the screen turn black and doesn't  work anymore.Maybe is burn?

My Ipod touch 2nd generation was working fine until I tried to charge again from my PC,when I connected the Ipod was getting too hot and smelling like burn cable, the screen turn black and doesn't work anymore. any ideas about what happen?

    You can try here:

However, from your discription, I suspect that something is broken.  Maybe a dead battery.  In that case. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and see what they say.

  • HT3964 IMac, Mountain Lion- overheating and putting itself to sleep when it gets too hot.

I've tried re-setting the SMC on my intel core i5-2.66 GHz Imac 27" to stop the fan from running all the time.  It started when I first upgraded to snow lepeard. I thought maybe Moutnain Lion would help this issue,  but now it's overheating and putting itself to sleep when it gets too hot.  Any suggestions?  This happens after about two hours of working.  Using Adobe Suite only and still overheats.

First off, there is nothing wrong with the fans running all of the time, they are the Macs cooling system and they would not run under normal conditions if the Mac didn't need them to run. So unless they are racing and your Mac sounds like a jet ready for take off, the fans are just doing their job.
That said, I think Apple's idea of how mcuh and how fast they should run does not always match the iMac's real needs. I, like many others, use SMC Fan Control and I set the speed at which my Mac's fans run.
