Memory consumption is more with oracle database compared to Sybase

Hi,
We are executing the same java source code with backend sybase and the oracle database. But with oracle database it is consuming more memory than Sybase.
Currently using 11g R2 with ojdbc6.jar driver
can you please provide the information to optimize the memory consumption when using the oracle.
Thanks,
Nagaraj

What memory in Oracle? Shared pool? Buffer cache? PGA? UGA? Library cache? Something else?
What memory in Sybase did you compare it to?
What type of client-server connection to Oracle was made? Dedicated or shared?
What commands/method were used to determine the memory consumption in Oracle and then Sybase?
What serves as the baseline for comparison?
Comparing product A with product B is a COMPLEX thing to do. And IMO, beyond the abilities of the majority of developers - as they lack the technical expertise to extract usable metrics and correctly compare these between products that can work VERY differently.
And unless you can provide technical details to backup your claim that you are observing that "+Memory consumption is more with oracle database compared to Sybase+", I would say that you have no idea what you are actually observing and in no position to deduce that Oracle consumes more memory.

  • ASP application has problems working with oracle database 8.1.7

    ASP application has problems working with oracle database 8.1.7 through both oracle ODBC driver and Microsoft ODBC driver
    We have an ASP application running on Windows 2000 server, and with 8.1.7 Net8Client and MDAC 2.6 SP1.
    The application worked fine with an Oracle 8.0.5 database.
    After upgrading oracle database to 8.1.7.0.0, our ASP application works fine except when updating the same data record more than once. The application is not saving our updates.
    We tested our application using Oracles ODBC driver v8.1.7.5.0
    and experienced more problems. We had problems just bring up our data entry pages. In either case, we are returned with some 505 errors in our browser, problems with the ASP pages and IIS, the page is not displaying.
    If anyone has some suggestions on how to fix my problem, please advise. Thanks in advance.

    thanks...i saw one article with this approach..but the document did not present the detailed process...do you have one? i am still searching for a good procedure to follow...since it is an old database and focusing/studying old versions like this is a pain in the a**... :(

  • HP EVA6000 with Oracle Databases

    Hi Everybody,
    Does anybody work with HP EVA6000 and Oracle Databases on RHEL?
    We have the following situation (everything is 64bits):
    1) Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.7 on RHEL4 U2 using 4 local disks RAID 0 (15000rpm each). With the following results:
    - Acceptable database performance, it needs some sql tuning but performance is acceptable for users
    - Normal user response time
    - Normal active sessions for peak time.
    2) Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.7 on RHEL4 U2 using HP EVA6000 with 16 disks (10000rpm each). I am not an HP EVA expert but what i know is that is configured with 4 Disk Groups for Oracle Database (VRAID1). With the following results:
    - We expected same or better performance, but it was not our case. We only migrated local storage to HP EVA storage.
    - Performance starts degrading in 30 minutes when users begin doing their work, we start killing some users, we start getting more active sessions and they stay active for a long time, more "buffer gets"....in general not acceptable performance for users and business.
    - We have exact # of CPU, exact RAM, exact OS configuration, exact SGA Oracle configuration...the only change is the new storage.
    What we need is an advice of HP EVA6000 users working with Oracle Database (specially 9i on RHEL).
    HP Support says it is a RHEL problem, Oracle Support says it could be an HP EVA configuration problem, nobody gives us a workaround or explanation just to confirm what it is happening.

    Hello Miguel,
    now we changed to a HP EVA6000. And we have the same problems like you described.
    Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.7 on SLES9 (both 64bit) using a HP EVA6000.
    Now we have a lot of buffer gets and a bad overall performance.
    Could you solve the problem?

  • Does Oracle OLAP comes with Oracle Database 10g ?

    1.Does Oracle OLAP comes with Oracle Database 10g or do we need seperate software to have this ?.
    2.If I create a Cube with Analytic work space manager the cube is going to be stored in the Database ( meaning the in the table space where OLAP is Stored).
    3. What is the difference between Analtyic work space manager and discoverer For Olap.
    Help is higly appreciated ..
    Thanks, Prasad

    One thing to point out : The OLAP option is a costed database option, so while this is automatically installed and part of your database you do have to purchase additional licenses to use this feature. You will need to check with your Oracle account manager to see if you are actually licensed to use this feature.
    If you have existing 9i OLAP cubes these can be quickly and easily migrated to 10g OLAP and the documentation explains how to do this. However, there are many new features that are part of 10g OLAP that will improve the performance of your data model that will not be enabled as part of a migration process. Based on my experiences it would be quicker and easier (depending on the size of your existing 9i OLAP cubes) to consider rebuilding your data model using these new 10g features. You should be able to export all the dimensions to XML templates from 9i OLAP and import the templates into the 10g schema and reload your dimensions.
    For the cubes you will probably want to consider using partitioning, composites and compression to provide maximum flexibility and performance for your new data model. There is more information on these features within the OLAP documentation and in the many whitepapers and presentations on the OLAP home page on OTN.
    For moving data from SQL Server to 10g OLAP much depends on the nature of the data transfer. If it is a one-off bulk data load then you could consider using the normal MS command line tools to dump the data out and transfer it to Oracle. Alternatively, you could consider using Oracle Data Integrator to manage the extraction of the SQL Server data and the data load process into Oracle 10g relational tables. If you decide to use Data Integrator this will require additional licenses.
    If you can extract the data from SQL Server to flat files you can use Oracle Warehouse Builder (basic ETL is free as part of the 10g database license) to load that flat file data via external tables. Warehouse Builder can also be used to define your OLAP data model (think of Warehouse Builder as a more powerful version of Analytic Workspace Manager) and provides tools to load the data directly into your OLAP dimensions and cubes. You can get more information on managing OLAP data models with Warehouse Builder the Warehouse Builder home page on OTN.
    There are no facilities to modify Discoverer Viewer to add customisations. You can add company logos, modify certain colors and/or hide certain features but it is not possible to add additional features. You may want to consider using BI Beans to provide this type of environment. BI Beans is the development framework used to create Discoverer Viewer. You can create customised JSP pages that look identical to Discoverer Viewer pages with the added benefit of providing your own specific features. You can get more information on the BI Beans home page on OTN.

  • Installation BOBJ XI 3 on UNIX ( Sun Solaris ) with Oracle database

    Hi All,
    I want to deploy and install BOBJ XI Enterprise 3.1 on Sun Solaris with oracle database.
    My question is, do we need to add some oracle licenses stuff in BOBJ XI Enterprise server or we just using a connection from Sun Solaris to oracle database ?
    Pls Advise,
    Rgds,
    Denny

    Hi Denny,
    the risk is the same whatever DB server you are using. Once you have a setup where more than one application access the server, overload caused by one application can influence the performance of the other ones. You have to check if your DB vendor offers tools to monitor and limit the load on your DB server. But we are talking hypothetically now. I would recommend to check what's the actual load on your oracle DB server. If the server is not working at the limit (let's over 80% all the time), then I think that you can try to install BOBJ also in an existing oracle instance on the oracle server. You can reduce the risk and make the maintenance easier if you setup a dedicated oracle instance on your DB server just for the BOBJ repository.

  • Use IBM easy tier on DS8700 storage system with oracle database

    Hi,
    We search best practices to integrate IBM SSD and easy tier technologies on Oracle 10gR2/11gR1/11gr2 database.
    is that someone already done this type of integration with mixed Oracle and IBM technologies ?
    Thanks

    user8949908 wrote:
    Easy Tier is feature on the DS8700 and the DS8800 that offers enhanced capabilities through automated hot spot management and data relocation, auto-rebalancing, manual volume rebalancing and volume migration, rank depopulation, merging of extent pools, and thin provisioning support.
    Easy Tier determines the appropriate tier of storage based on data access requirements and then automatically and nondisruptively moves data, at the subvolume or sub-LUN level, to the appropriate tier (like SSD) on the DS8000.
    so I search feedback on this technology used in conjunction with Oracle database.
    It's a question oriented for IBMer ...
    Regards
    ArnaudAs I said, this all happens several layers away from anything the Oracle database would know (or care) about. Just like my HP-SAN. It does a lot of the kinds of things you describe above and actually, not only does oracle not know or care, neither does the OS. All of that work is being done by a sub-system that is totally abstracted from the OS and even more abstracted from the Oracle rdbms. When oracle ( or any app) needs data, it sends a request to the OS to "give me X- number of bytes, beginning at offset Y in file Z". He doesn't even know what kind of device file Z is. And with dedicates storage systems like a SAN (and it sounds like Easy Tier) even the OS doesn't really know or care. It simply passes the request along to the interface to the storage system.

  • Upload file in JSP with Oracle Database 10gR2

    How to upload file with oracle database 10gR2??
    i can't find how to upload..
    i've tried to create a procedure in oracle and execute in netbeans but the file save in directory and then from directory save to database.
    it means the file save in 2 location, in directory and database..
    does anybody know how to save file direct from the JSP file into database without save in directory?
    this is the procedure..
    create or replace PROCEDURE load_file (
    p_id number,
    p_photo_name in varchar2) IS
    src_file BFILE;
    dst_file BLOB;
    lgh_file BINARY_INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    src_file := bfilename('DIR_TEMP', p_photo_name);
    -- insert a NULL record to lock
    INSERT INTO temp_photo
    *(id, photo_name, photo)*
    VALUES
    *(p_id , p_photo_name ,EMPTY_BLOB())*
    RETURNING photo INTO dst_file;
    -- lock record
    SELECT photo
    INTO dst_file
    FROM temp_photo
    WHERE id = p_id
    AND photo_name = p_photo_name
    FOR UPDATE;
    -- open the file
    dbms_lob.fileopen(src_file, dbms_lob.file_readonly);
    -- determine length
    lgh_file := dbms_lob.getlength(src_file);
    -- read the file
    dbms_lob.loadfromfile(dst_file, src_file, lgh_file);
    -- update the blob field
    UPDATE temp_photo
    SET photo = dst_file
    WHERE id = p_id
    AND photo_name = p_photo_name;
    -- close file
    dbms_lob.fileclose(src_file);
    END load_file;

    Well your Oracle procedure is designed to load a file, so that's what it does. If you want it to load from a data stream such as an upload, you need to rewrite it accordingly.
    So far this is not a Java question at all.

  • Does  Analytic Workspace Manager 11.2.0.3.0A  work with oracle database 12c?

    hello,
    i would like to know if AWM 11.2.0.3.0A works against with oracle database 12c in pdb mode or not .
    regards
    jm

    I have attempted to connect 11g versions of AWM to 12c and get this error:
    'This version of Analytic Workspace Manager is incompatible with the database instance. The Analytic Workspace Manager version is 11.2.0.3.0 and the database compatible version is 12.1.0.0.0'
    So unfortunately it is not compatible, and there is currently no AWM for 12c
    I also contacted Oracle support and they wont give me any information about a release date or any information on the xml template specification for 12c.
    I guess we will just have to wait till they release a version of AWM that supports 12c...

  • Problem with Oracle database Express Edition (Linux)

    I installed oracle-xe on my machine (ArchLinux x64), and all worked fine before a  reboot. After it, I still can connnect to the db with sqlplus, but can't connect to apex (http://localhost:8080/apex/f?p=4950) and can't get a connection using ojdbc:

    The problem was solved by changing permissions for log directory :

  • Problem with ORACLE database

    Hi all,
    I am facing some problem with ORACLE database while configuring one JDBC scenario in the receiver side. I have configured one JDBC scenario like FILE TO JDBC. As JDBC is at receiver side i have provided the input file with the following format ,
    <root>
      <StatementName1>
         <dbTableName action="INSERT">
             <table>employee</table>
              <access>
                    <flag>NO</flag>
                    <ID>567</ID>
             <NAME>134</NAME>
                 </access>
         </dbTableName>
      </StatementName1>
    </root>
    But in the ORACLE database all my columns are in the uppercase.
    So when i have tried to send this input file to process through JDBC receiver side then i have faced the below error :
    FATAL ERROR: Column 'flag' does not exist in table 'employee'
    Then I have tried to check with sender side processing of JDBC adapter. By using the SQL statements as
    SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE WHERE flag='NO'
    UPDATE EMPLOYEE SET Flag='YES'  WHERE flag='NO'
    Here it worked fine.
    Now my question is,
    If the same adapter is working when we are writing a query directly(sender side), then we must also allow case independence in the auto generated SQL part(receiver side).
    The JDBC drivers for both SQL server and Oracle, supports the same java code, for accessing the DB, irrespective of the case of the column names.
    Please clarify this doubt as soon as possible.
    Thanks,
    Soorya.

                        </access>
                   </dbTableName>
      </StatementName1>
    </root>
    Then i am facing this problem,
    Message processing failed. Cause: com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.RecoverableException: Error processing request in sax parser: Error when executing statement for table/stored proc. 'EMPLOYEE' (structure 'StatementName1'): java.sql.SQLException: FATAL ERROR: Column 'flag' does not exist in table 'EMPLOYEE'

    I have gone through your link but it also says to modify the column in the input file which is not possible for me. Can you please help me in this regard?
