Memory increase using app-storage....

Hi!
I'm working on an application that stores pictures in a directory. I was using ApplicationDirectory, which I discovered is a bad practice.
To access my pics, I used to use:
baseDestinationDirPath = "app:/Images". My program uses about 17Mo of memory, runs fast, but will encounter security errors in the future.
If I try to use ApplicationStorageDirectory (I copy files to applicationStorageDirectory):
baseDestinationDirPath = "app-storage:/Images", memory cranks up to 323Mo !!! and the app runs verrrry slowly.
What's the point???
Please help.
Thank you.

Hi Peter,
and thanks for answering. I don't exactly understand what you call "memory share". Maybe I didn't explain my problem right. Let's be more precise:
I've written this app using Air SDK and run it under Vista64. It uses some pics, and user can add some, kind of a gallery to make it simple.
One of my classes accesses thes pics, and performs simple operations (resizing, thumbnail generation, basic treatment,...).
Everything was OK until I decided to use App-storage instead of App directory.(At first, I wasn't aware of the security problems raised by writing ApplicationDirectory).
When I just change one line of code (baseDestinationDirPath = "app:/Images" to baseDestinationDirPath = "app-storage:/Images", the app starts running very slow and memory usage changes from 17Mo to 323Mo! Same problem wether I use a profiler or install and run my app.
I just tried to run both versions under Ubuntu 11.04: same memory problem (+ I get a security-error when trying to write to app-storage...). Under Linux I can't profile it, but my app is MUCH slower...
I really don't understand why using app-storage instead of app can alter performance so dramatically! I guess it shouldn't... I 'm trying to use different profilers to try to understand the problem, but I'm not experienced enough.
Thanks for your help!

  • What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files?

What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files of all types? I already have a Time Casule which I back up on and I'm needing to create more space in my flash drive in my Mac Pro, so I need another external storage system I can use to archive all that I don't currently need. I may still wish to edit and use the files, and I am not very techy and am a broke student... so anything grossly expensive is a no-no for me (between $50 and $200 is idyllic). If you could simply post links of different good/useful hard-drives that I can use, I'd be thankful.
    Thank you
p.s. I'm australian, so anything within this country would be great. Or I can deal with somewhere that has cheap shipping.

It's been moved and seconded. Any discussion? Yes:
Buy two external drives. Use one for Time Machine. Be sure this drive is at least twice the capacity of your computer's hard drive. Use the second drive as a bootable clone of your computer's hard drive. Should something happen you can immediately get the computer up and running from the clone until your restore from the Time Machine backup. This is what is called redundancy. Should either backup drive fail, there's another to take its place. Backup redundancy is very important. You can never have too many backups.

Perhaps I'm demonstrating my ignorance (I have only used app-v is test bed environment).
    App-v is great!
We are considering using app-v on students own laptops and on our desktops.
The applications can be downloaded for offline use. Does that leave us more open to students copying the files so others  may use the product?
    (app-v 5)

    Hi,
reconstructing an application from the offline cached resources indeed would be not that easy (though it isn't too hard either).
However, depending on your deployment model and scope you may have granted your users READ access to a central App-V repository (aka 'content', where al the .appv files are located). Give me an App-V file, local admin privileges and the App-V client and
I can bring the app onto my laptop w/o sophisticated knowledge.

  • Memory Increase - MacBook Pro mid-2012...?

Hello to all who reads this post…
I’m wondering if it's possible to upgrade the memory in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro...?
I believe this should be fairly simple and relatively inexpensive. However, after reading some of the forum posts & reviewing my systems specs on Apple's specs pages , I've become less sure of the possibility to increase the RAM.
My system specs indicate that my memory is upgradable:  Memory Slots ECC:  Disabled     Upgradeable Memory: Yes
One of Apple’s Support pages I came across seems to indicate that my systems RAM can only be upgraded to 8 GB’s max…(but now I’m thinking they mean 8 gigs max per memory slot) and the spec's page on the site seems to indicate that 8GB is the MAX for my MB-pro…?
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270
Do any of the guru's here know how much, (if any), memory I can add to the 8 gigs of RAM currently installed?
If so, what brand of memory and how much of a memory expansion would be best to boost the speed of my MacBk?
I’m hoping the memory increase will give my system an extra boost & extend the lifespan of my Mac…. ( not to mention that my 3 year old son is getting more and more involved with gaming apps…the type of apps that become resource hogs, hogs that love RAM chips..) In any case, I’d like to increase the 8GB of RAM to 16 GB or 32GB and I would truly appreciate any thoughts, advice, feedback, shout outs, etc…
In any case, here are my system spec details:

A mid 2012 MBP will accept up to 16 GB RAM (even though Apple says 8 GB).  The specifications are:204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
Look at this video for installation instructions:

You will need a #00 Phillips driver to take off the bottom panel.

Not enough storage is available to process this command.
If I'm wrong I'm happy to be corrected. If you reduce the PermSize and TempSize of the datastore (just as a test) does this allow JBOSS to load it?
You don't say whether this is 32bit or 64bit Windows. If it's the former, the following information may be helpful.
"Windows manages virtual memory differently than all other OSes. The way Windows sets up memory for DLLs guarantees that the virtual address space of each process is badly fragmented. Other OSes avoid this by densely packing shared libraries.
A TimesTen database is represented as a single contiguous shared segment. So for an application to connect to a database of size n, there must be n bytes of unused contiguous virtual memory in the application's process. Because of the way Windows manages DLLs this is sometimes challenging. You can easily get into a situation where simple applications that use few DLLs (such as ttIsql) can access a database fine, but complicated apps that use many DLLs can not.
As a practical matter this means that TimesTen direct-mode in Windows 32-bit is challenging to use for those with complex applications. For large C/C++ applications one can usually "rebase" DLLs to reduce fragmentation. But for Java based applications this is more challenging.
You can use tools like the free "Process Explorer" to see the used address ranges in your process.
Naturally, 64-bit Windows basically resolves these issues by providing a dramatically larger set of addresses."

  • HT201318 If you increase your iCloud storage capacity can you increase the number of songs that exceed the 25,000 limit on the iMatch. If it does not apply specifically how can I increase this rather constrained limit?

The whole business of cloud storage is unclear to me. They say that you have 5G of memory free upgrade to 15 for twenty-five dollars and that this is unrelated to music and video memory. I get this, but I have purchased iCloud Match for $25 but I've quickly maxed out the 25,000 song limit. How can I increase this limit. It is at this point I am unclear about the $25 for 15G additional storage... can this be used to increase iTunes/iCloudmusic storage to increase the music Storage? One would think that apple would make these distinctions clearer. Can anyone carify? Thanks!

iTunes Match does not use your iCloud account.  Your annual Match subscribtion pays for separate storage to host your iTunes library.  As far as I know, you can't increase the 25,000 song limit.
If you recently purchased the storage upgrade for this purpose, in the U.S. you could call 1-800-MYAPPLE for a refund if you don't need it.

  • Trying to synch my IPAD and see "Other" memory being used

Trying to synch my IPAD but see that there is 4.4 GB of memory being used and I have no idea what it relates to so can't determine how/if I can free it up
Is there a way to see what it relates to?

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
     Cheers, Tom

##########END PYTHON CODE##################Using the linux command 'top' prior to and during the execution of
the python script above, I noticed that a considerable amount of memory
is used up and never reclaimed when it ends.If you delete the db_home,
    however, the memory is reclaimed.
Am I conjuring up the bsddb concurrent db store incorrectly somehow?
I'm using python 2.5.1 and the builtin bsddb module.
    Thanks,

I think I am seeing what you are reporing, but I need to check further into
    the reason for this.
Running your program and monitoring with Top/vmstat before/after the test, and
    after deleting db_home is:
    BEFORE RUNNING PYTHON TEST:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    top - 17:00:17 up 7:00, 6 users, load average: 0.07, 0.38, 0.45
    Tasks: 111 total, 1 running, 109 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
    Cpu(s): 3.6% us, 0.7% sy, 0.0% ni, 95.5% id, 0.0% wa, 0.2% hi, 0.0% si
    Mem: 1545196k total, 1407100k used, 138096k freeTerminal, 20700k buffers
    Swap: 2040212k total, 168k used, 2040044k free, 935936k cached
    [swhitman@swhitman-lnx python]$ vmstat
procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- system ----cpu----
r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa
    1 0 160 247096 20860 833604 0 0 31 22 527 675 7 1 91 1
    AFTER RUNNING PYTHON TEST:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    top - 17:02:00 up 7:02, 6 users, load average: 2.58, 1.36, 0.80
    Tasks: 111 total, 1 running, 109 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
    Cpu(s): 3.7% us, 0.5% sy, 0.0% ni, 95.8% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
    Mem: 1545196k total, 1508156k used, 37040k free, 20948k buffers
    Swap: 2040212k total, 168k used, 2040044k free, 1035788k cached
    [swhitman@swhitman-lnx python]$ vmstat

AFTER RUNNING PYTHON TEST & DB_HOME IS DELETED:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    But I think DB_ENV->close
    top - 17:02:48 up 7:02, 6 users, load average: 1.22, 1.17, 0.76
    Tasks: 111 total, 1 running, 109 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie

So the Top/vmstat Memory Usage Summary is:
before test after test after rm db_home/*
    Top 1407100k 1508156k 1405236k
    mem used

  • How can I free the storage on my phone and use the storage on my iCloud?

My phone says I have 5Gb of iCloud storage. I have 4.8Gb free. My phone itself has no more space and when I download it tells me I need to sort out my settings. How can I manage my storage so that is is all saved to my iCloud rather than my phone so that I have memory for new apps or music?

You can't use iCloud to expand the space on your phone.  iCloud is designed to sync your data across all your devices, not to save your data to free up space on your device.  The only exception to this is if you subscribe to iTunes Match, which would make your iTunes music library through iCloud without having to store it all on your phone.
If you need to free up space on your phone, you'll have to sync something off it to free up space, or import some or all of your photos and vidoes to your computer and delte them from your phone, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • N9 - Installed apps storage full (problems)

    1) N9 app storage is 4.2GB. My device shows 3.9 of 4.2GB are used. This means, that 0.3GB are still unused. Nevertheless, I get an error message that I can't install an app because of low memory and I'm advised to uninstall an app first.
2)When I try to uninstall an app, be it from the homescreen (long press, hit x) or from the application menu in Settings, I get two different error messages.
    Any recommendations on that bug?
    How to enlarge app storage?
    Thanks!

    @deadprincess
Are you filling it with HD games and if you use over 90% of available space you are asking for problems?
Although technically feasible if you are not an experienced Linux user and haven't repartioned live linux ext4 filesystems before, then most likely you will fail upon N9 if this is your first attempt at doing so.
Also be warned that there will be problems with reflashing device in future, if the size of the partition does not match the size of the flash image!

On my iPad I have got a lot of "other" memory being used (18gb) why? I can't see anything on there!

With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space.
