Memory leak in 10g XE Production for Win XP?

I'm concerned about a potential issue re: memory usage. Can anyone explain why after running StartDB.bat, the Mem Usage (as monitored via Task Manager) continues to grow, apparently without bound? This is with zero activity on the database -- not even opening of the Home Page. Initial usage immediately after startup was around 51MB; after 25 inutes it had climbed to 80MB.
Any ideas?

Memory useage will vary based on several factors. However, you must consider that all search and update operations are done in the memory area called the SGA. The SGA is designed to be shared by all concurrent users and is a function of the amount of concurrent data as well as the number of concurrent users.
You can throttle or predefine the total SGA size. Limiting it too much will have a negative impact on the overall performance, as will allowing it to grow to the point of causing swapping. A 50M-150M SGA is not unrealistic for a single user system. Beyond single user environment, it is not unrealistic to set aside 20-50M per additional user, although I've seen extremes as low as 1/2M and as high as several hundred meg, based on the application.
In addition, there is a per-user area called the PGA. This is used for support operations such as sorting.

  • Memory Leak with Oracle ODBC Driver for Long Raw columns

    Oracle version : 8.1.7
    Platform : Win2K
    Oracle ODBC Driver version : 8.0.1.7.5.0.0
    Hi,
    I've got an Oracle database upgraded from
    V8.0.5 to V8.1.7 which has a table having one long raw +
    normal columns. I was able to observe distinct memory
    leaks (approx 80K) when using ODBC interface calls (thro C++ code) that referenced a combination of normal & long raw columns in a select statement. However, this leak was not observed when only normal columns were present in the
    select statement. Is there any known restriction for using
    long raw columns with other columns? Or do long raw columns have a known memory leak problem thro ODBC?
    Thanks!

Please Help.If you have written the JNI, the JNI itself (java calls, methods, etc) to be OS agnostic then it shouldn't matter. In that case you check the windows code (not jni), the linux code (not jni) and the jni code itself independent of each other.
    If you haven't made the JNI OS agnostic the question would be why not?

  • Memory leak if assign new Object for existing Key in NSMutableDictionary ?

    Say my NSMutableDictionary Object have a Key call @"Number" that holds a NSNumber.
    If I were to create a new NSNumber via alloc and assign it to the Key @"Number" in my NSMutableDictionary object, what happen to the old NSNumber ?
    Those NSNumber were created using alloc...

    You can't just change a key. You can remove the object (and the key) and insert a new key/object.
    When you remove a key/object from a dictionary, "release" will be called on both. Whether either or both objects are autoreleased or not is a different issue.

  • Best Practices for EJB--memory leak avoidance

    I an researching a memory leak. From what I can tell, we do not want to put any instance variables at the class level. This would incur a memory leak when the ejb containers creates the ejb.
    I am wondering if there are any more 'best practices' with EJBs that prevent memory leaks. A good site would help me too
    Russ

    Thank for your reply.
    You are right. I was referring to stateless session
    beans.
    What I was thinking was the following:
    1. Making parameters final unless the parameter
    r state is changed inside a method.Won't help with memory leaks. There are benefits for an object being immutable, but I don't think that it eliminates the possibility of the object being leaked.
    2. All instance variables in stateless session beans
    s should be set to null upon ejbPassivate and
    ejbRemove operations. The variables should be
    populated on ejbCreate and ejbActivate.Optimizing compilers don't need the hint of setting the reference to null. I don't think that helps, but I'm not 100% certain.
    3. Before throwing an exception at the session bean
    level, clear up all the instance variables by setting
    them to null.Shouldn't scope make it clear to the GC that the objects aren't needed? If they're all primitives, how does this help memory leaks?
    I am using a profiler to identify the objects still
    being held onto once GC, but I was hoping others with
    more experience than I would share some of their tips
    on how they avoid memory leaks.I don't know where you're getting these tips, but I don't think they're helpful.
    Collections and Singletons would be the places where I'd look. If you add a reference to an object that holds onto it in a collection and never lets go, the GC won't reclaim it.
    Singletons aren't cleaned up, because their instance is static. Anything the Singleton refers to won't be cleaned up unless the Singleton relinquishes the reference.
    Look for things like that. I think they matter more.

  • Memory leak within FOProcessor class

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to use the XML Publisher API (5.6.2 and 5.6.3) to generate PDF documents from XSL templates and XML data in a J2EE environment (Jboss 4.0.5) with Struts but a memory leak occurs.
    It seems not to be a multithreading issue because the leak is there even if the PDF documents are generated one by one.
    I made many tests to isolate the leak and I have simplified my code as much as possible: it seems to happen within the FOProcessor class.
    One of the tests generates 4,500 PDF documents (one at a time) from an XML file (3 KB) and an XSL file (74 KB with blanks). Nothing else is done with the Jboss server during this test. The XSL file was created before the test from a RTF file with XML Publisher. The memory leak is around 70 KB for each PDF document (around 300 MB for the whole test).
    As you can see below from the heap histogram (taken at end of test after a full garbage collection) it seems that the XSL and XML elements/attributes are not released (and thus never garbage collected).
    Did I miss something or is there an actual problem with the XML/XSL parsing within the XML Publisher API?
    Thanks for your help.

  • App Memory Leak When Open iPhoto

    Hi everyone,
    Does anyone have experienced app memory leak when open iPhoto?  My free memory immediate dropped from 5000 mb to 15mb when I open iPhoto and the app never open.  If I force to quit iPhoto, all return to normal and everything work fine.  I only have iPhoto app running, not sure what caused the memory leak???
    Looking for help.
    Thanks

    Actually the new library was a test to see if the problem occurred only with your current library or with all libraries.  The fact that switching libraries cleared up the problem is just serendipitous.

  • Finding Memory leaks in C using Visual Studio 2013

    I am using Visual Studio 2013, and taking a course in C programming and we started
    talking about memory bugs detaction, in particular memory leaks, and how to detect them using Valgrind on Linux.
    I want to know if there is a way to detect such memory leaks using VS 2013. I tried searching online but it just leads to lots of articles and blogs and msdn posts and blogs with lots of words like dump files, and analyzing them, etc which is weird
    because:
    1) It sounds so complex, convoluted and unintuitive it is actually hard to comprehend it.
    2) The main reason this is weird is due to the fact that VS is the most advanced IDE around and Microsoft spends so much money on in, yet from what I have read it seems that there is no simple way to use VS to detect memory leaks
    - certainly no way that's as simple as Valgrind where I only have to compile the program and run the command valgrind -leaks-check=yes ProgramName
    and it simply prints to me all location it thinks there is a memory leak and describes the error (like not freeing memory after allocating it with malloc hence having "dead" memory after the program finishes, or accessing memory that's out of
    the array bounds)
    So my question is how to use VS 2013 in order to achieve the same results and to find out First in high level if there are memory leaks in the program, and Second - to detect in a simple manner where those leaks are- preferably without involving dump files
    (not that I know how to use them anyway in VS).

    Hi MicrosoftLaw,
    Thanks for your post.
    Based on your issue, if you want to check if there are memory leaks in the C program from this VS2013. I suggest you could try to find Memory Leaks Using the CRT Library, for more information:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/x98tx3cf.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    In addition, I find a similar thread about this issue, please you refer the Dusty's suggestion to check this issue.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/45627/how-do-you-detect-avoid-memory-leaks-in-your-unmanaged-code
    I did some research about this issue, I found that the Visual Leak Detector extension tool is a free, robust, open-source memory leak detection system for Visual C++. So if possible, I suggest you could try to use the Visual Leak Detector extension
    tool to find the memory leak for Visual C/ C++ program.
    https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/7c40a5d8-dd35-4019-a2af-cb1403f5939c
    However, if you have any issue about how to use this Visual Leak Detector extension tool to find the memory leak for C program. I suggest you could directly to write a review to this REVIEW tab in Visual Leak Detector site.

  • Memory leak when passing variables to functions in StarOffice Basic

    The following code generates a fast memory leak:
    Sub Main
    Dim i&
         for i = 1 to 1000000
              Model(i)
         next i
    End Sub
    Sub Model(j&)
         j = j
    End Sub
    But if you put the contents of Sub Model into Main, or if you make j a public variable and don't pass it explicitly to Model, the memory leak disappears.

    That's a bit different for event handlers like the onRelease
    event of buttons.
    mybutton.onRelease = myfunction(1); -> the code will
    execute right away without waiting for the event to fire
    mybutton.onRelease = myfunction(); -> the code will
    execute right away without waiting for the event to fire
    mybutton.onRelease = myfunction; -> myfunction gets called
    after the event onRelease fires.
    See attached code.

  • Can I locate "memory leaks" to keep apps from crashing?

    Hello clever people,
    Since the iPhone 4s is still on the market, I assume that my 2 year old 4s should be able to work fine. However, I am constantly plagued by apps crashing and, most frustratingly, apps often fail to remain running in the background, even with one or no other apps running.
    I had a similar issue with my iPad2, just before it ran out of applecare, and the chap had me run through with sending anaylitcs to him, and his conclusion was that a few apps were causing 'memory leaks' - had me reset the iPad and reinstall everything. So I also did this on the iPhone, which did help, but it has not solved the issue. I have also removed most apps from the device, in a bid to locate the offending app.
    Searching on Google for "memory leak" only brings up info for developers, and nothing for someone who is actually using their phone and having issues. My usual scenario is going for a bike ride and running Strava, which then cuts out when I stop to take a picture - with no other apps running.
    Does anyone know how to solve the issue - return the phone to its 'as new' state, or locate the problem and remove it?
    Cheers,
    Tobias

    There are differenty types of, "resets" ..
    Have you tried the folloiwng ??
    Reset the device:
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    No data is lost due to a reset.
    Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • How to configure license file for Memory Leak tool and WL Server 9.2?

    (I posted to general JRockit forum before realizing existence of this forum which is probably more applicable.)
    Here's our problem:
    Running latest version of WL 9.2 MP3 and JRockit Mission Control 3.0.1
    Able to run Mission Control, and connect to the WL Server and to run View Console with no problems.
    I can't get Memory Leak tool to run because it complains about needing a license file.
    First I tried with off the shelf WL 9.2 MP3.
    Get error:
    A license for Memory Leak Detector could not be found on the JRockit at (1.5) weblogic.Server (192).
    Error: Can not find component Memory Leak Detector for JRockit * in the license file. Please check http://www.jrockit.com/license for license updates.
    So I downloaded license file from JRockit download site - wls92.zip. It contains several files, but no clear instructions on what to do with these files. I copied one of these files "LIC-WLSP92.txt" to my JRockit home as C:\bea\JROCKI~1\jre\license.bea
    Tried again. Restarted WL server. Restarted JRockit Mission Control.
    Get error: A license for Memory Leak Detector could not be found on the JRockit at (1.5) weblogic.Server (3052).
    The license file does not exist at: C:\bea\JROCKI~1\jre\license.bea
    Any advise on how to install license or who to contact for help?

    Installed Mission Control 3.0.3.
    Got following message when I attempted to run Memory Leak:
    A license for Memory Leak Detector could not be found on the JRockit at (1.5) weblogic.Server (192).
    Error: Can not find component Memory Leak Detector for JRockit * in the license file.
    Please check http://www.jrockit.com/license for license updates.
    I believe that we're using the latest downloads of WebLogic 9.2.x and JRockit.
    WebLogic is running using 9.2.3 and JRockit build R27.4.0-90_CR358515-94243-1.5.0_12-20080118-1154-windows-ia2
    Contents of C:\bea\jrockit_150_12\jre\license.bea:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <bea-licenses>
    <license-group format="1.0" product="JRockit" release="*">
    </license-group>
    </bea-licenses>
    Could WebLogic be misconfigured?
    Any diagnostics to help figure out the licensing?
    Any other ideas?

  • Memory leak in Skype 7.4.0.102 on Win 7 x64

    Ever since upgrading to the latest version of Skype on my Win 7 x64 box, I've had nothing but issues with Skype having a huge memory leak.  It'll start out running fine when I boot up, hovering around 141K of memory usage (even though I think that's still higher than it should be), but after leaving it open for a while, it will just continue to creep up.  Yesterday I had to kill the Skype.exe*32 process from Task Manager because it was up to 1.2 GB of memory usage.
    Previously it had not gotten that high, but I have seen it as high as almost half a gig.  I've tried all the usual stuff, removing and reinstalling, making sure I'm running the latest version, etc.  The memory leak is still there.  Has anyone experienced this issue with 7.4.0.102?  If so, has anyone found any resolution?

  • Avoid Bug 7146375 ORA-4030 MEMORY LEAK IN (Xml generation) in oracle 10g

    Hi All,
    I have to generate an xml from database which contains around 4 lac records. I had written a query using XmlSerialize and XmlElement.
    It does run properly for records less than 2 lacs.
    But when the record count goes above 2 lacs..it is throwing the following error -
    { ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 1032 bytes (qmxlu subheap,qmemNextBuf:alloc)
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.XMLTYPE", line 111!}
    For the above error - I have tried increasing pga from 480M to 800M, but still we are getting the same error.
    After researching i found out -
    Cause
    This is caused by the following bug:
    Bug 7146375 ORA-4030 AND MEMORY LEAK IN SESSION HEAP: "KOH DUR HEAP D"
    Solution
    Bug 7146375 is fixed in 11.2
    So i tried out the query in another a db which has 11g installed and my query runs perfectly fine for records of upto 4 lacs.
    But since we have oracle 10g on our clients machine, are there other ways to achieve this XML generation other than this?
    Thanks.

If Oracle have investigated and created a bug report that says the solution is to upgrade to 11.2, then that's the answer, otherwise they would indicate that a particular 10g patch set can also be used.

  • Memory leak on latest Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Win XP SP2

    Dear Adobe Developers,
    I have encountered a strange problem. I open a PDF file of size about 16.5 MB, I search trough it and then the memory allocated starts steadily growing until it fills out the entire RAM and the virtual memory as well. Strange thing is this only happens after I perform a search through the file; if I don't do it, all stays within normal. I was wondering if it is not a memory leak of some kind? I use Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on Win XP with Service Pack 2 on Celeron 1.7 GHZ, 256 DDR RAM, 320 GB HDD ect .. Normally the RAM occupied by the OS itself is only about 100 MB so there are ~150MB left free. But they seem not to be enough even when we add to them the virtual memory.
    Greetings,
    Georgi Popov, BG

    >I have more than 700 MB virtual memory.
    That's probably not enough for normal operations. A couple of
    gigabytes is safer.
    There may be a problem, though. This doesn't sound like normal
    behaviour. Acrobat may be cacheing text - does the size stop
    increasing if you search for something, and find it, on the LAST page?
