Migrating from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1 on a new machine

I want to migrate my tiger server to a leopard server which will be on a new machine. What is the best way to deal with two computers have the same server name? Install the leopard sever when unplugged from the network and give it the same name as my old server and then copy all the files over? Or install leopard server as server2.xxx.com and then change the name later?
Thanks for your help.

I would recommend shutting off mail services and then booting your server on another drive and, using Carbon Copy Cloner, copy the disk to the new server. Disconnect the old server from the network, connect the new server and then boot it up and immediately start an upgrade on the new server to 10.5.0 then 10.5.1. If it fails, revert to the old before starting mail services.
I did that upgrading an old sawtooth 10.4.11 to a mini with 10.5.1 and it went well except for all the virtual hosts for web sites. Still have not solved that one - just did the upgrade this weekend.

Hey, migration from an old mac late 2008 aluminium to a brand new mac book air. Only the new one has firewire. Transmissiom via wifi estimates ~50h. Is there a faster Way to sync? Tanks in advance

I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X.  The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar:  Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.
    Good luck.

  • How do I migrate from my old mac that lost its display to my new mac?

How do I migrate from my old iMac that lost its display to my new iMac?

That can depend on what model iMac is the old one. With some models it's relatively easy to remove the hard drive. once out, you can use a device like this:
Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0 - connects any 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive
to connect the old drive to the new Mac. It will show up exactly as if you had an external hard drive in an enclosure. Them you can access the drive.
Can you give us an idea of what iMac variant the old one represents? The are four broad families: G3; G5: G5, and Intel. You can usually find the processor information the same tag that has the serial number.
I believe that, if you enter its serial number in tis Apple web page:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
it will give you a description of the computer with the pertinent information.

  • Migrate from Palm Desktop/OS 10.4 to OS 10.6 & new iPod Touch?

I'm very dependent on Palm Desktop 4.2.2 to keep my life organized. My old Palm died long ago, but I like Palm Desktop more than any other alternatives I've seen. I've ordered a new iPod Touch. I'm pretty sure that, to use it with my iBook (running OS 10.4.11) that I'll need to upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard if I want to share info with the Touch.
Moreover, I think I'll need to sever any ties to my beloved Palm Desktop: I don't think it's compatible with OS 10.6. I've explored similar posts, but haven't found an answer I could use or understand. So if someone knows of an online description of migrating from Palm Desktop to either the equivalent Apple products or to Google, I'd appreciate the URL.
The main feature I like in Palm Desktop is the ability to create links between all the modules. For example, I can set an appointment with a doctor, then attach the doctor's contact information and attach a memo that has a list of questions and directions to the new office. My existing database is cross-linked between all these types of info.
Is there any way I can retain these cross links when I migrate? Do any of the Apple PIM programs let you create these kinds of cross references with new information? Does Google or some other software let you do this better?
From what I've read, it sounds like getting the information exported into a format that can be imported to a new program isn't easy. BTW, I'll also be migrating from Eudora to either Mail, Thunderbird mail, or some third party equivalent. I won't use any flavor of Outlook. Is there something about MobileMe that would make this migration easier?
Can you tell that I'm operating on the very fringe of what I'm technically able to understand? I've stuck with Palm Desktop for 8 years. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone could provide -- in an easy, step-by-step way. Forgive me if this information exists elsewhere. Directions to that info also would be appreciated.
Quickly exceeding my technological Comfort Zone,
    Marganne

The Palm Desktop works fine with 10.6.6 (and even Hotsyncs to Palm, though I gather this is irrelevant to you). However it is dependent on Rosetta, so (avoiding speculation to conform with the terms of this Forum) were Rosetta to be removed in a future system upgrade the Palm Desktop would be inoperable.
You're not going to be able to salvage the contents and use them in a linked fashion in the same way. It's possible to salvage the contents, though it's going to entail some work.
MEMOS - Evernote (basic version free) is a good replacement and extremely flexible: its contents can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch. The contents of the Palm Memos can be imported into Evernote using the Palm Desktop Memos Importer for Evernote (free)
CALENDARS - Palm Desktop menu File>Export and export Date Book as vCal. In iCal File>Import and import the vCal file into iCal - it will appear as an 'On My Mac' calendar. Use File>Export>Export to export this as an .ics file. Create a new calendar under your MobileMe login name (I'm assuming you've upgraded to the new MobileMe calendar) and import the .ics file into this. Delete the previously imported calendar. (If you don't want to use MobileMe just leave the imported calendar where it is.)
You can't separate the Palm categories and you will need to go through it making any necessary adjustments.
It's worth considering BusyCal, which is like  'Pro' version of iCal with much better handling of ToDos and many extra facilities. On an iPod Touch it's well worth considering Week Cal which, though I've not tried it, appears to be a much better calendar than the rather basic built-in one.
TASKS - you will have to enter these manually, one at a time - it doesn't appear to be possible to import them into iCal. iCal won't handle repeating ToDos - BusyCal will. They also make BusyToDo for iOS which reads the ToDos from the MobileMe calendar and handles them separately and much better.
ADDRESSES - you can export these as a vCard - select all first - and import that into Address Book (watch out for duplicates if you are already using Address Book).
It's not clear if you have MobileMe: if you don't want to sync between computers or iPhone/iPod Touch you don't need it, but if you do it's the best way - Google and Yahoo have issues. However you should be able to sync to an iPod Touch using iTunes, though as I don't have this device I don't know whether there are any downsides.

  • Migrate from macbook 10.6 to macbook pro 10.5 with time machine

A disaster fried my macbook. It was running 10.6 and time machined to a timecapsule. I have bought a macbook pro running 10.5 (excitement!). I want to get the data from the timecapsule to the macbook pro without a hitch. I have a family pack of 10.6. I will eventually install 10.6 on the macbook pro.
I understand that on setup you have the option of importing (using migration assistant?) from a time machine backup. But does this work if the macbook pro is 10.5 and the data is of a 10.6 backup?
If there will be problems, what are the solutions? Should I initially upgrade the macbook pro to 10.6? If so, does the family pack 10.6 disk do a complete clean install? That is, would this affect installing the ilife suite and other stuff from the macbook pro install disks?
Alternatively, should I take the harddisk out of the fried macbook and put it in the macbook pro, then clone that system, e.g. carbon copy cloner, and proceed that way?
As you might guess, I am dazed and confused.
    Your humble servant, &c,
    kizkij

If both systems are the exact same system, simply taking your hard drive out of the broken machine and installing it in the new machine should give you no problems. At the very least, take the hard drive out of the old system and put in an external enclosure, then mount the drive to the new computer, and you can drag/drop your files.
Snow Leopard will let you do a clean install (I booted from the SL disc, then used Disk Utility to wipe the drive, then proceed with installation). You can use your Apple software installer disc (for that system) after you upgrade to Snow Leopard with no problems.

  • Migrating from '04 imac (G4, Tiger 10.4.11, 1Gmem) to new iMac '09

I can't get the two migration assistants to connect since they get stuck in an infinite loop. I saw in one post about upgrading the OS on the iMac but I don't even think I can b/c it's so old. What other options do I have for using the migration assistant.

do both imacs have firewire ports? i think they should, although the old one may only have firewire 400. the new one has Firewire 800 only, I just checked. connect them by an appropriate firewire cable and boot the old mac in target mode (reboot it and hold "t" at the chime". then it will show up as an external drive on the new imac and you can migrate using migration assistant wuth the option to migrate from another hard drive or TM backup.

  • Migration from 7.0.2-10000 to 9.1.1 with new Hardware

    Hello,
a customer from us wants to upgrade from Version 7.0.2-10000 to the new CUCM 9.1.1.
I know that we have to use new hardware.
    My plan is the following:
    - Update all needed phone firmware to the latest in 7.0.2
    - Install the patch ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.1.cop.sgn
    - Install Version 9.1.1 on the old hardware
    - Take a backup from the installed 9.1.1 on the old hardware
    - Install the 9.1.1 on the new hardware
    - Restore the taken Backup from the old hardware with the new Version
    - Do the licensing stuff
    - Great all things are running...
Can someone apply this way to migrate??
    Thanks a lot...
    Christian

If you want to avoid the phone FW upgrade after going to 9.1.1, upgrade to the same loads on your current version so you can control the upgrade process and do it with small groups of phones at a time.
Other than that,if your MCS supports the target version, you're good to go with that plan.

  • Migration from Photoshop Album Starter Edition 2.0 to PSE9 on new PC running Windows 7 ?

Troubles in the migration of 12.000 carefully tagged pictures to new PC and new PSE9
I finally was able to use my old catalog, created with Starter edition 2.0, with all his tags, on my new computer in Photoshop album Edition 3.2, and this works normally, but will stop after now less than 10 times using it ( as no more registration is possible ).
Photoshop Elements 9 is now running on my pc, BUT, when I try to convert the old catalog ( catalog.psa ), it fails with the following message : "The conversion failed cause the file of your catalog is corrupted. Try to fix it into your old software, and start again ". But, in my old software Album 3.2, there is no possibility to "repair" the catalog ..... And when I try "Open as" with PSE9, it says " This type of file is not supported ".
So, my catalog.psa which is indeed an MS access file cannot be converted in catalog.PSE9db. I was thinking that maybe an older version of Elements would be helpful, but I can't find any available trial. Any idea to help me further ?

    Thank you Mark ,
This is a very quick and complete answer and I was lucky enough to be able to download the needed software.
Unfortunately, when I tried to upgrade Phtoshop Album Starter Edition 2.0 to 3.2, it says that the tags will be kept ( saved ), but when opening 3.2, all pictures are there, but no tag at all ....
Is there anything else ( or more ) I could try to recover those tags ?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

We are migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. We have a new Exchange 2013 server will all of the roles installed, but none of the mailboxes have even been moved yet. We are seeing some of our users getting prompted to accept the self signed certificate
on the exchange 2013 server. Exchange 2007 server is still handling all of the mail flow and connectors. Any reason why some of our users would be prompted with the certificate for the exchange 2013 server even though their mailbox is still on exchange 2007.
Our users are on outlook 2010.

  • Advice on migrating from G5 to Intel Core Duo Mini

I'm running 10.5.8 on a G5 and wanting to migrate to a new Intel Core Duo Mac Mini running Snow Leopard.  I would like to migrate all of my files and settings and applications to the new machine, but am looking for advice about potential pitfalls.  I've read in some of the other discussions about problems with software from my G5 overwriting the Intel versions of the software on the newer machine, but could not glean enough from those to fully understand what the issues are.  My principal software components that I don't want to have to reinstall are things like CS3, Office 2008, and older versions of things like iMovie, etc.  I have a Time Machine backup that I could also migrate from, but don't know if that will alleviate potential problems.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Before you jump the bandwagon, make sure to have read this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
Sometimes the Migration/Setup Assistant doesn't work between PowerPC and Intel Macs. The CoreDuo Mac Mini is not much of an improvement over a G5 except for the native Windows virtualization, and support for Snow Leopard, and Intel Mac only applications, and built-in Front Row support.  The Core2Duo Mac Mini on the other hand supports Lion,  and generally is faster than a G5 except for the few applications that are G5 optimized or can take advantage of the higher RAM upgrade possibilities than most of the Mac Minis, and the G5 supports Classic applications where the Mac Mini Intel versions do not.  So before getting the Mac Mini make sure all the applications or at least some can take advantage of the Mac Minis own advantages.

  • Migrating from PSE for Windows 6 to PSE for Mac 6 including metadata

Can't find anything in the knowledge base on this.
I am giving up on Windows. Its just too messy and ugly. One of the final changes will be migrating from MS Windows Vista and PSE 6 to a brand new Mac, using LEopard 10.5.2 and PSE for Mac 6.
I want to migrate my images from the Windows machine, as well as the metadata organizing information. Surely I am not the only one with this need. I know I can save the mages in a mutually readable file format, export, and have them on the Mac, but I have a great deal of metatdata and image organization in the Windows version of PSE 6.
Please tell me how to migrate the entirety of PSE for Windows to my new Mac.
    Thanks.....

Some related questions-- can Bridge CS3 search sub-folders? Could I filter for a Keyword at the top of a tree, and locate all files with that keyword in sub-folders?
While exporting files from PSA2 on a PC I am using Share / Email to attach my existing keywords. Can they be drag-and-drop added to a Hierarchy in the Keywords panel? (Either from the Filter panel where they are automatically listed and counted, or from the "Other" location in the Keywords panel where they appear italicized?)
I had deluded myself into believing that PSE6 for the Mac included Organizer. Would Lightroom be a logical option for organizing? Particularly if I want to catalog many images on CD without storing them on disk? Can it be purchased separately? What other options would you recommend?

  • Best Way to Migrate from MBP iPhoto '09 to MBA iPhoto '11

Need to migrate wife's iPhoto '09 library from my MBP over to her new MBA which has iPhoto '11.
The iPhoto library seems larger than it should be given the number of photos and i understand this is because it retains the complete change history of each photo? Is there a function that automatically removes all but the final version of each photo?
Also, it is recommended that I uninstall iPhoto '11 and replace with iPhoto '09 (given some of the comments about '11 being buggy)?

Is there a function that automatically removes all but the final version of each photo?
No. Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
If you don't want this feature of iPhoto then the best advice is to use another app. This version control is hard-wired into iPhoto.
it is recommended that I uninstall iPhoto '11 and replace with iPhoto '09
    To re-install iPhoto 09
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Using the Go Menu in FInder menu and select Go To Folder
    In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder window will open at that location. Remove any packages that have iPhoto in the name.
    3. Re-install 09 from Installation Disk
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Renaming TFS Server name upon migration from TFS 2010 to TFS 2012

We are migrating from TFS 2010 on existing server to TFS 2012 on new server. All components (TFS 2012, SQL 2012, SPS 2010) are directly on the new server similar to existing server (TFS 2010, SQL 2008 R2, WSS 3.0).
The new server has a new name, however the service provider that does the actual migration,
    wants to rename
the new server to be same name as the name of the original existing server when it is shutdown. The rename is intended to be done using
    netdom utility.
I noticed there are articles by microsoft and others that describe various issues that may arrise as
result of TFS server rename. However service provider still plans to rename based on his field experience and best practices.
What do u recommend to do in this aspect ? Why would it be necessary to rename and not use the new name (DNS can map old name as well to the new IP) ? What are the actual risks in such rename and is it worth it ?
    Thank u

    Hi Cathy,
    Thank u for your reply.
We know that renaming the new server to the same name as the original one, is
not a must for the migration to work. The issue in question is as follows :
    1. A Microsoft partner that has hands on experience in TFS migration, and planned to migrate for us, recommends to rename the new server name, to the original server name, utilizing net_dom command, and to do it during / after  same procedure u
    provided link to.
    2. We found Microsoft documentation that cautions about renaming the server, e.g. renaming SQL server which is in our case on same machine where TFS 2012 is to be installed. However, the partner urges us to rename, explaining that net_dom should perform
the rename safely without caution risk.
Kindly let u sknow if Micorsoft considers such rename with net_dom to be a good
practice in low risk for such migration,
or better keep the new server name as it is and just map the old server name in DNS to the IP of the new server.
    Thank u.

  • A few months ago when I switched over to icloud from mobile me I set up my icloud with a new email address and now I can't get my calendars to sync with my iphone.  I can't cancel either account-the icloud or mobile me.

Please help!  I have two separate email addresses -my old mobile me and the new icloud and now nothing is syncing with my iphone.  I'm not sure how to get everything back to syncing the way it was before I changed everything over to icloud.

If you really did migrate from MobileMe to iCloud, you would have the same address as before.
It sounds as though you didn't actually migrate from MobileMe to iCloud, you just started up a brand new iCloud account.
You won't be able to access MobileMe now. If you failed to move everything over to iCloud properly, then all the data and the account has been deleted as Apple said it would at the end of July.
To get everything to sync, you need to make sure all your devices and computers are logged into the same iCloud account. Possibly what has happened is some are still using the old (now deleted) MobileMe account and some are using the new iCloud account.
