Migration Assistant to Update Second Mac

Hello,
I used Migration Assistant to install my new Mac, now I was wondering is it possible to keep them in sync
using that? I mean, does it overwrite everything, or just new files? Like Time Machine.
To be more clear, I want to just migrate new programs/settings I installed to old Mac since first migration,
instead of copying the whole old Mac again to new one.

Thanks, but thats not what I mean. I must have hundreds of changed files on computer, and I want to sync those 2 computers, just like Time Machine only adds changed or new files to backup.

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive. I told it to look for a drive, yet it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive ... it just endlessly looks for other computers. Why is it looking for other computers at all, when I told it not to?

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • HT3231 why do all these pages not tell you where migration assistant is on a mac pro. they all say what to do when you have it however this is of no use if you are unable to find.

why do all these pages not tell you where migration assistant is on a mac pro.  They all say what to do when it is on however this is of no use if you are unable to find it in the first place.

In the Utilities folder, which is in Applications. You could also use Spotlight to search for it.

  • Migration assistant to copy from mac mini internal drive to second internal drive fails, 'not enough space'

I have a 2011 mac mini and I just installed a second internal HDD using an OWC data doubler kit. So now I have two internal HDD.
The original HDD is 750 GB and the new one is 1 TB. After the installation I manually formatted the 1 TB drive with one Mac OS Extended  (Journaled) partition.
I then installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the new 1 TB and during the installation tried to use Migration Assistant to move my user account over (mainly to get all the iTunes and iPhoto stuff).
The original HDD 610 GB used, so 140 GB free.
Migration Assistant correctly detects the original HDD but when I try to copy things over it says there is not enough space.
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to get Migration Assistant to move my stuff from the original HDD over to the new one?

I feel like such an idiot. I had manually tried to copy files over using the command line before I found out about the Migration Assistant tool. My manual copy had used up 500 GB.
I deleted all of that and now I have no issues with the Migration Assistant.
    Sorry for taking your time!

  • Migration Assistant not recognizing other Mac via FireWire

I am trying to transfer files from my G4 Mirror Doors Power Mac to my new Intel iMac via the instructions that come up on the new iMac. I am running the latest version of 10.4 on the G4.
I have the two machines connected via FireWire. I restarted the G4 holding the "T" key down and sure enough, the floating "FireWire" icon comes up but shortly after that, the new iMac says, "There are no versions of OS X on the older machine" which is obviously not true.
I tried the Ethernet route and loaded the Install Disk from the iMac into the G4 as instructed but that disk did not recognize either of my 2 internal drives as valid for installation.
    Any suggestions?

FWIW, I have had no problems using Migration Assistant or understanding its prompts, at least when using the version included in the recent Migration and DVD and CD Sharing Update. In this version or later, every option has both a title & descriptive info below it & there are no places I can see in which everything is called a document. You may want to check your MA version number & make sure it is version 1.2.3 or later, as described in About the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update. This may help avoid any confusion you have had.
However, keep in mind that MA is designed to migrate files from one backup or startup disk at a time. It will transfer items from one home folder on a connected drive to the corresponding one on the new drive but these items must be enclosed in a home folder (in /Users/) on that drive. If you have elected to store these items on a non-startup drive lacking that hierarchy, you must import them using some other method & decide where to put them on the new drive. MA cannot make that decision for you.
Moreover, if you tell MA to import only your "Documents" folder, it will not import such items as your Movies, Music, Pictures, or other home folders, so for example your ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library file will not be imported, nor will be your ~/Music/iTunes folder (which contains your iTunes database files, even if the iTunes Music folder containing all your music files is stored elsewhere).
Without knowing exactly how you have 'piecemealed' other files & folders into your new drive, I do not know what to tell you to do to best complete the migration process. If you can supply more info about that, & about where exactly the original files & folders are stored on the older Mac, perhaps I or someone else can give you more useful info about doing that.

  • I am having problems with migration assistant (windows pc to Mac 2011) When I get to the 'Quit other applications' box and click continue, nothing happens. There are no other apps running - any ideas, please?

I am having probems with migration assistant. Trying to transfer data from a windows laptop to iMac 2011. It was working fine when I did the set-up yesterday, but it was going to take hours to transfer some videos so I quit the process with the intention of doing it again at a later stage. However today I find that everytime I get to the 'Quit other applications' box on the Mac and click 'continue', nothing happens. Have checked mission control and confirmed no other apps running. Tried several times with the same result every time. Migration Assistant running on my laptop with the 'Waiting for mac to connect' box displayed. Mac is connected to wi-fi OK as able to use Safari and access internet. Any ideas, please?

Thanks for your suggestions. Have managed to get Migration Assistant working but now have a new problem, i.e. where does it save the transferred files?!! Searched a few forums and it seems it saves it under your old username, or suchlike. Anyway I tried logging on as a new user using my old user name but there were only a handful of files there, couldn't locate the majority of stuff from my old laptop. Anyway I don't intend to go through any more hoops with MA - will just save the important stuff to an external drive and transfer it that way. Not impressed with MA at all. I thought it was supposed to be a user-friendly tool to simplify the transfer from pc to Mac - not my experience, I'm afraid!

  • Migration Assistant to an Intel Mac?

Will it be possible to transfer things like current user settings from my current mac to a new intel mac?
Anyone whose done this, please let me know....
    Thanks,
    -David

The Migration Assistant comes up early in the setup process and works fine. I moved my PB to the iMac with only one error, that due to a software registration issue and it was easily fixed by entering a registration code.

  • Migration assistant from windows to mac using Ethernet cable

I have just bought a year old MacBook Pro and have been trying to transfer date from my windows laptop to the mac using the migration assistant.
The first time I tried this process it tried to do it via wifi and the information message stated it would take 28+ hours, but the connection was lost after a few hours and the process stopped.
I would like to restart this using an Ethernet cable from the windows laptop to the mac, but when migration assistant starts it automatically defaults to wifi and doesn't give me an option of choosing to use an Ethernet cable.
How can I force it to use this cable? Because it will take too long by using wifi.

  • HT4796 Migration assistant from PC to MAC

My PC accidentally got shut down during migration, do I have to restart from the beginning or will it continue transferring where it left off.

I recommend to delete all the files you don't need from your PC before using Migration Assistant. Those files will be transferred to your Mac and you will lose space.
Then, you can open Windows Migration Assistant and start transferring files. In case that your Mac asks you for a password to log in after transferring, it's the same password as you had on the PC. If you didn't have any password, you have to set a password > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101

  • Tiger migration assistant not finding old mac's OS X Panther Disc

My new Intel G5's Tiger Migration Assistant isn't finding my old Power Mac OS X Panther Disc.
I have several partitions on my old mac, a few for various versions of classic environment, etc., and my firmware is up to date. I just got an Intel G5 and the migration assistant is finding only the V9 partitions. It says wiating for disks to appear but the Mac OS X disc never does.
I haven't used those V9 parts in a long time. I kinda wish I had gotten rid of them.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Henry

    Thanks for the response.
I just ran across something that I hadn't seen before. In the forum it said that the user names need to be the same name on both machines. Mine is different because I want to use both on the same network eventually, and I'd since had a son with the same name so I needed to add an ititial...
If they can be different, then...
I did what you suggested, but still the only disks that appeared were the various os 9s. They are on a seperate partitioned disk, so I went in and disconnected that one. Now I start up the computer and the OS X disc is there and seems happy, but after I start the Migration Assistant now, and it leads me to the point where I have to restart the old computer after hooking up the firewire, I restart, hold the T and it starts-up and then turns off. I'm thinking that's bad.
I have a start-up issue that I didn't think was related, but I'm no guru and this is now a start-up issue. Maybe, if you ahve the time, you couls glance at that and let me know if you think so:

  • HT2518 how do i find/use my iTunes after using migration assistant from pc to mac

someone please help!!! i bout a macbook pro and i used the migration assistant to transfer everything from my pc the the macbook. it said it was sucsessful. i found the files in my utilities folder but i can not figure out how to use the itunes and or merge it with the one on my macbook. when i open the itunes on the desktop nothing is there. my old itunes has both uploaded music and bought music. i want all of the music transfered. any help appriciated. i couldnt find this answer anywhere on the site.

I have the same problem? I have found out that the migrated files cause a new user to be set up . You have to go to your  system preferences icon ( the black & white one with gears) open it up and clic on users & groups under title of System. In there you have to unlock the lock and go to the newly created user I think it shows up as a house. Clic on that and your system will change to that new user. Your files will be in this new users files. I found mine this way but even though I found them I still cannot move or transfer them into my I-Mac I-Tunes program.
If anyone knows how we can do that we would be very thankful

  • Migration assistant waiting for your mac to connect

I'm trying to utilize the migration assistant to migrate from Windows XP3 to a new iMac.  The migration assistant connects and shows me the selected XP machine, but the XP machine is stuck on "waiting for your mac to connect."  I've confirmed both machines are on the same subnet, I can access the folder shares from the mac, etc.  Uninstalled Symantec Internet Security, disabled windows firewall, made sure firewall is disabled on Mac, no stealth mode on router, etc.

  • HT4796 I keep trying to install the migration assistant from pc to mac and the software will not install.  It continues to get interrupted.

I am trying to install the Migration Assistant that will transfer my Itunes accout from a PC to a MABookAir.  The install is interrupted and unable to complete.  Would someone be able to walk me through where the glitch might be?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • Migration assistant demanding update

I'm trying to migrate files from a iBook G4 running 10.4.11 to a new Macbook Pro.  I have them connected by network/ethernet cable and the new computer is demanding that I update the old computer, but the old computer does not see the need for an update.  Meanwhile, they will not talk.
I can pair them on blue-tooth, but can't make migration assistant work.
    Please help.

  • Used migration assistant, profile on Lion Mac doesn't have permission to profile folders

I used migration assistant to copy my profile from my Snow Leopard MacBook Air to my new Lion MacBook Air.  Everything seems to have copied, but I log into my profile and get permission denied errors when trying to open any profile folders (desktop, documents, Library, etc).  Control panel crashes as it probably can't write to the user preferences folder because of permissions.
I have tried disk utility, but it still doesn't work.  I tried safe mode, but that didn't help either.
Any thoughts?  (other than changing permissions on every single folder!)

    1. Boot holding CONTROL+R
    2. Choose your language
    3. Choose Utilities from the top menu bar and open Terminal
    4. Type: "resetpassword" without quotes.
    5. The Reset Password Utility will open:
    6. Highlight your Hard Drive in the top section
    7. Select your username in the first drop down
    8. Leave the remaining options alone and click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the screen to reset your permissions and ACL's associated with your home folder to what they should be.
    9. Close the Utility.
    10. Click the Apple and choose "Restart"
If your issues persist after this you will need Terminal commands to resolve this.
If you need to supply me your shortname so I can give you the proper commands
Your shortname is the name of the folder in "Macintosh HD/Users/" with the house icon.
