Missing desktop files

I recently went to move photos from iPhoto to a DVD to backup files. It seems I inadvertently copied 6000+ movies and photos to my desktop. (I have no idea how all files were selected.. I had only chosen a handful) Computer froze, but is now back online - however, it's sluggish and delayed. I checked Activity monitor to see where all the CPU is devoted, but there is nothing happening. I can get my HD to show up on the desktop (but only by clicking where I know it shoud be), as well as external hard drives, but all other icons/folders have vanished... unless I look in finder - and there they are. When I try to free up desktop space by trashing thru finder, it says the files can't be deleted as they are in use. Zapped pram, rebooted and repaired from disk, verified permissions etc.. all to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

...unless I look in finder - and there they are.
Since you are able to move them, at least toward the Trash, try creating a folder, dump a bunch into that, then another folder for another bunch, etc. The idea is to reduce the quantity of items that Finder is forced to try to display at any one time.

  • How to recover missing desktop files?

While in Adobe Bridge, my friend accidently dragged his User folder to the Shared User folder (the graphics pen sorta grabbed it withouthim noticing). He tried to drag it back out of Shared, but it said it couldn't be modified. So he rebooted, and it started up with his own user being as if new, with none of his files or prefs. So then he tried dragging his desktop, docs folders, etc back from Shared to where they belonged in his user. That worked for everything except the Desktop. When he tried to copy that,it asked if he wanted to replace the existing (blank) desktop with the one from the shared folder, which showed all his desktop files. But when he okayed it, the resulting desktop was blank. He doesn't know if he accidently overwrote in the wrong direction (he doesn't think so), or if something else happened. He's a photographer and had hundreds of edited image files in folders on the desktop- so all his recent work since a back up a few weeks ago is gone. Spotlight cannot find any of them by name, nor any other desktop files but the new blank one. so the files are at least not visible, if not gone. Here's the thing: if you run Terminal and look at the desktop file, it shows 2,064 items... which might be his files (?). But i have no idea how to get at them. Nothing shows in the Desktop trash hidden file. Is there anything short of expensive recovery software that might find these files, which are probably not overwritten yet? (he's being careful not to use the drive so that they don't get overwritten)

Trying to diagnose something like this third hand probably isn't very effective. But when you open Terminal you are "in" your home directory. If you then issue this command:
    cd Desktop
and hit return you will then be "in" your Desktop folder. If you then issue the list command:
    ls -al
you will get a list of all the files and folders that are in the Desktop folder. If he sees everything, then the stuff is there. He could try creating a new folder in his home folder, call it something like fromDesktop, and then issue this command (this assumes he is still "in" the Desktop folder):
    mv * ~/fromDesktop
This will move everything from the Desktop folder into the fromDesktop folder. A list command will verify things:
    ls -al ~/fromDesktop
If all his stuff is listed, but he still can't see it in its new location using the Finder, then it could be that somehow the invisible bit got set.
And for Finder's sake, tell him to stop saving all that stuff to the Desktop! Put stuff in folders in his home folder. I've seen cases where excessive numbers of files dropped on the Desktop brought the Finder to its knees for many hours. Every single thing on the Desktop is treated as a window by the Finder, and having a ton of stuff there is needlessly slowing things down. And he should be backing up every night, not every couple of weeks. There are many programs available that will do this automatically. If he is in business he should be using one. Not to mention burning separate CDs of things for every client.

  • Missing Desktop File

I was transferring some files from my phone on to my G585 laptop. I made a file and transferred over 120 pictures from my phone in to the file. Now the file is gone. Its not anywhere to be found. Search give me nothing, and it's not in the recycle bin. The pictures are not on my phone any more and can not be found on my computer. Where did they go?

Maybe the folder is hidden. Go to Control Panel and search for Folder Options. From there you can choose to display hidden files/folders. See if that works otherwise I would assume its been deleted.

  • Missing .xml files

As part of something identified by the FBI as a scam (called "Reveton"), I had my Safari page temporarily frozen (apparenly simply by substituting their selected page as my home page), and with a good deal of "hoop-jumping" to "unfreeze" my computer with the help of both ISP and Apple tech support, I am once again able to use Safari and other stuff seems restored as well, but I find my "Pages" documents can be read or accessed because they are missing their ".xml files". This apparently pertains only to those files , upgraded or not, which appear on my desktop without being in folder whether or not I've upgraded them to the new Mavericks status from the recent upgrade. I can create new documents without a problem.  This is an "advertisement" for using the new coud tool for automatic update, or somethign like it, which I do not ordinarily do. (Guess I'm gonna have to change my ways....)
Any ideas for a remedy or method of recovery, or do I just chalk this one up under the phrase "learning curve"?

The Pages and missing .xml files seem to have restored themselves, probably when I shut off the lovely thing when I went to dinner.  I can open the files that I could not open before. I've heard that these things clean and heal themselves; I think I just saw it in action.

  • Desktop files disappearing ?

I have a 2010 white Macbook with OS 10.6, and halfway through this morning 85% of my desktop files and icons disappeared while I was elsewhere. I've looked in Spotlight for them, checked the trash, and they are nowhere to be seen - has anyone any idea what has happened and where they might have gone to ? It is bizarre, and even slightly amusing for a moment, but I've looked high and low for them on the machine and can't find them anywhere. Most of my work is contained in those files, so that is worrying, and 40GB's of iPhoto has also gone missing. I have backups, so not a problem, but I'd like to find out what has happened - or is happening - before I reload my desktop, especially if the same thing is going to happen again.

[1] MacDropAny has been busy working for me for months. The way I have it set up it simply syncs my desktop to a copy on the Dropbox server. It's never deleted anything, until yesterday, when it synced a nearly empty desktop back to itself, which as I said, and you then agreed, explains the disappearance on Dropbox.
[2] I'm unsure as to what you mean about Dropbox and copies. If I sync something on my computer to my Desktop, I can still access the file on the laptop with no internet connection, and indeed, often do so. I'm pretty sure you simply have the file on both ends. You can, after syncing, delete the file on either your computer or on your Dropbox without it affecting the other - unless you are using MacDropAny which simply syncs your chosen files instantaneously.
[3} "Business account" simply refers to the size of my Dropbox. I'm a one man band, no one else accesses it.
    CountDOWN
[3] gottit Interesting - leads us to suspect #[1] is perpetrator.
[2] Can you turn MacDropAny off temporarily? If so, run a test. Make a Test.txt file - save to desktop.. Drag/Drop from Mac Desktop to Dropbox icon. What happens to the original test.txt file on your Desktop?
In my experience with such an act, the original 'DIS'appears from the Desktop and 'A'ppears on Dropbox - i.e., as if you moved it on your Mac from one folder to another folder - NOT copied from one HD to another HD. The latter is actually what is happening is it not?
Be interesting to know if MacDropAny prevents  the normal Dropbox behavior I just described.
Dropbox was intended to behave just like another folder on your Mac. No need to SYNC cuz you are working on the file from the Dropbox folder
[1] I am now trying to figger out why you need this syncing App to be involved? Why not just use Dropbox normally? Doesn't solve the mystery....
[0] BLAST OFF !! It is clear that the files/folders on Dropbox disappeared first. MacDropAny then synced that fact. We are back to
Why did they disappear from Dropbox? Not quite square one, but I'll bet that Dropbox support could have some input. Bet they have it all backed up to where they could restore Dropbox to ±the time before the poltergeist struck.

  • Word 2001 is Missing  the "File" Menu

I am missing the "FILE" menu from word. I Have the apple menu edit, view, insert, format etc... but "FILE" is missing.
I rebuilt the desktop trashed word's preferences, zapped PRAM. Copied the App from a cloned hard drive but "FILE" will not come back no matter what I do.
The app does respond to the keyboard commands found in the file menu but I don't have all of those memorized. And it seems to work fine otherwise.
Any clues to help me trouble-shoot this would be appreciated.
    THANKS
    G4 Digital   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Jack,
Go back into Preferences and trash the Word Preferences again. And empty the trash. In fact use Sherlock to make sure all Word Settings files are gone.
I used to get this (and still do sometimes). I seemed to get it more with Excel and the Data menu. Can't say how long it would be gone for, but as soon as I needed to use it to sort data, I'd see it was gone.

  • Missing itil file in windows 8

I keep getting the error of missing itil file in windows 8.  I recreate the itil file and itunes works fine once.  After I log out of itunes the next time I launch it I get the same error.  Where should Itunes be located in windows 8 directory structure and where whould the itil file folder be located within that structure?

Temporarily choose Duplicate Display then change back to single display and Icons may reappear on main display. (It worked for me.) The Show Desktop selection was already in place on my machine and toggling it does not fix this issue.
The best fix would be on MS's end. Removing the extended display from my laptop inconsistently clobbers the Icon positions on the desktop.
Since I park all my Icons on the main desktop (not on the extended display) there is no excuse for the OS to move the Icons to the extended display ESPECIALLY when the display is not present.

How can i get the missing directx files ( ddhelp.exe,dxapi.sys,d3dm.dll and d3dpmesh.dll) installed
    Thanks for any help
    Ken

    Hi Ken,
Sometimes video card software packages will refresh DirectX files to ensure that the latest are on the PC. If the process is flawed then it's possible that the video card driver update is a problem.
Consider going back to a known good Windows restore point before the issue started.
Open up the Run window and enter the following:
    cmd
sfc /scannow ----> this may take a while and it will attempt repairs if needed.
Try this Microsoft DirectX diagnostic tool.
If you need to re-install DirectX then the DirectX download is here.
If all else fails then try the suggestions from this tip on how to manually install DirectX files.

  • Accessing devices through .desktop files

Hi. I'm quite a new Arch user, and I miss some kind of a center place where all icons for device access are located, like Window's My Computer. I thought I'd make one for me
But I cannot access a device when it's not mounted. I can create a .desktop file pointing to /dev/dvd for example, but it only works when DVD has been selected in the "Recently plugged devices" plasmoid or opened in Dolphin. Before that, it is not mounted, and therefore, I can't access it. So what I'd like is the ability to automount DVDs/CDs/pendrives/memory cards as soon as they are plugged in, not when a program tries to access them. I tried to tinker with /etc/fstab a little, but as it turns out, my pendrive doesn't always use the form of the same file in /dev/ it can be /dev/sdf, /dev/sdg...
Is there an easy way to do this? I don't only mean pendrive, but a set of .desktop files which will point me to all periherals. (I've got a card reader with 4 slots, so it would be geart to have 4 .desktop files for the cards only)

The confusion of Mac OS 9 versus Mac OS X desktops is understandable. The logical path as it is called of both are different. Mac OS X, being a multi user system has its own Desktop folder for each user. What you see on the Desktop in Mac OS X, is under:
Hard drive -> Users -> logged in name -> Desktop
What you see on the desktop in Mac OS 9 if no multiple users is set, is in:
    Hard drive -> Desktop Folder.
In earlier versions of Mac OS X, you had an alias to Desktop Mac OS 9 in your Home folder which pointed to Hard drive -> Desktop Folder.
You can still access it by using the Finder's Go menu -> Go to folder and select the path:
    /Desktop Folder/
That will access the boot drive's Desktop folder.
If you have another Desktop folder you wish to access, go to
    /Volumes/name of volume/Desktop Folder/
By default Mac OS 9 does not have multiple users set, and ties Desktop folders to the volumes that have them, and not a User folder.

  • Copying files from Zip Disks that have desktop files?

I'd like to copy files from a bunch of old zip disks to my external HD. Many of the disks have desktop files. How do I copy over the entire contents of the zip disc? When I last tried this awhile back it seemed cumbersome to deal with those desktop files. Was I missing a simple solution?

    Hi Lee,
Open the Zip Disk in the Finder, Select ALL, then while holding the Command key down, click on the Desktop file to deselect it, then drag the bunch over to where you want to copy them to.

  • How to get desktop files to stay on the desktop

Please help. Desktop files keep disappearing from the desktop. So far, the only way that I can return them to the desktop is by a Restart. I can find the items in a folder labeled "Desktop" in User/(Name), but I can't find how to get them to return to the desktop proper, in a way that they stay there. Am I posting this in the wrong forum? This is my third try with no responses

  • Ufoai-data might be missing language files

Wanted to report this as a bug on the bug tracker, but the bug tracker doesn't let me register myself, so here I am.
I have a problem with the new release of UFO: AI (version 2.4). ufoai-data might be missing language files. I don't have (nearly) any text in UFO: AI, no story introduction (besides "introduction_sentence_1"), no Ufopedia entry (it says something like "grenade_launcher_txt") and no mail text (only says "mail_txt"). An ufo: ai dev thinks, that the packager might have forgot to build the language files.
Could someone confirm, that there is a problem and that it is the missing language files? Thanks.

Just in case anyone is still having this issue running ufoai, also make sure to check in your in-game settings that language is set to "English" or whatever language you like.  My was set to "No Language" by default, and changing the exec line is absolutely neccessary even if you select a language.
In XFCE, I went to /usr/share/applications directory and edit ufoai.desktop as root.
    Change the line "Exec=ufo" to "Exec=/usr/bin/ufo +set fs_i18ndir /usr/share/ufoai/base/i18n/"
Then restart from your menu and set your language.  You are good to go.
Thought this might be helpful, sometimes ingame settings are easy to overlook.

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • DW CS5 Missing Related Files Problem

    Hello
Hoping somebody may be able to help me with a missing related files problem in CS5. I've tried Adobe phone support but they couldn't solve the problem.
*Some* of my sites (but not all) are not showing all the files related to that page. My pages are typically in .asp vb server model and contain .asp virtual includes (header, nav etc) plus .js and .css linked files
However DW is only showing the .asp includes as related files and not css or js ones. In design view the CSS is displaying correctly, and all styles appear in the CSS inspector but not showing as a related file in the bar. In CS4 it works fine.
I've tried deleting the site and recreating it, copying the files to a new folder and setting up a fresh site, creating a new folder and downloading all files from the remote server but no joy. I've also tried refreshing related files. if I click on the filter in the bar it only shows the asp includes and nothing else.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated, this is a great feature when it works
    Cheers

    UPDATE:
Managed to solve this problem, this is a new issue to DW CS5, previous versions do not seem to exhibit this problem
It occurs when you use site root rather than document relative paths for js/css etc files AND don't have the remote site url (web url) specified in the site setup | local info dialog, or do not have it fully qualified with http://
ie. ../js/file.js works fine without a remote web url but /js/file.js does not show the related file in the bar unless a remote url is defined.
Hope that helps anyone else that encounters the same issue!

    Regards
    Mohammed Abdul Muqeet

    Hi,
    Try these 3 solutions
    1. Did you start vncserver services as:
    service vncserver start
2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
    # nc -vz localhost 5901
You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
    3. service iptables stop
    Hope This Helps
    Regards,
    -DK
