Mobile Safari (iOS) HTML5 Audio 5.1

Hi there, I've made a HTML5 audio player which serves surround sound files (mp4). Works perfect on Safari desktop, but not on iOS. Is the mobile Safari Version unable to play multichannel files? cheers Henry

This started happening to me yesterday. Crazy bizarre. Text is almost unreadable.

Anyone else having the issue, to see a blurried website after zooming in / out sometimes? It's just like my iPod wasn't able to sharpen the site again after zooming. Already killed Safari and restarted the iPod. Problem happens again sporadic after some hours. It's not really reproduceable.

  • Is Mobile Safari's in-app multitasking (audio stream in one tab, browsing in another) gone for good?

I cannot remember the last iOS version this feature actually worked, but in the past, I used to be able to open a tab in Mobile Safari, begin streaming audio from a website, pinch in to bring up standard UI again, and then open up another tab within Safari itself and continue to browse the web. All the while the streaming audio is still playing in the background.
Now (and actually for the last few iOS versions, it's been a while), you cannot browse Safari while listening to a Safari audio stream at the same time. To me this makes no sense at all, because it's just a simple backgrounding concept. I can go off and use any other app on my phone, but not Safari itself.
There ARE a few ways to kind of trick Safari into allowing you to browse and listen, but it's a poor workaround. You can go to the website, tap-and-hold on the stream URL, then select Open in Background. Doing so will begin the stream and keep you in the current webpage and then allow you to open more tabs.
HOWEVER, if you ever select that audio stream tab, you can't control it consistently, and most of the time you'll get stuck in that tab and your solution is broken.
For YEARS I've been waiting for Apple to fix this silly limitation with each new iOS release, but every time I find that it's never fixed. I'm just surprised that I don't hear more people complaining about it, because it's been a huge source of frustration for me for so long.
Does anyone else experience this frustration or know if this is intentional (which would be enormously depressing if Apple purposely designed these functions) or if there are any better solutions to it than what I've come up with?

    Thanks for the heads up.
Odd that I can't just email their support department.
I'll post back with my results.

  • How can I have html5 audio continue to play in background in iOS7 from my flex mobile app

I have mobile app I've developed in flash builder 4.6 (flex 4.12 sdk) and I have a stagewebview component which contains HTML5 audio (mp3 retrieved from my web server and streamed / played via the app)... I want to have the ios version of the app CONTINUE to play the mp3 / html5 audio when the user presses the home button on their iphone or opens another app... so that when multitasking, my audio continues to play (where theres no other NEW audio started, for instance).
I have added the following to my manifest but it still doesnt do what Im after. I used this in another mobile app where I just play audio from the url directly in flash builder (i.e. NOT via webview component) -- but here it seems the webview suspends (Im guessing)...

Is there a way around this so my audio continues to play? My test device is an iphone 4 running the latest version of ios7

You can import audio files into Logic (as easy as drag and drop).  You can download these loops from the Internet from a variety of sources both free and paid.  Just do a Google search for those.
Once you've imported the file into Logic Pro, right click on the audio region and scroll down to the "Convert" option about halfway down the menu.  The top option will be "Add to Apple Loops library" - click this, and it'll add the file into your Apple loops.
It won't affect the other loops in the library.

  • Unable to playback audio on Safari iOS

    Hi,
I am testing a simple Edge Animate animation that it has only 1 audio file and 1 simple button with audio playback action. Nothing more.
I test it on Safari Mac OS and works normal, but I am unable to make it work on Safari iOS 7 for the iPad.
Nothing happens when I touch the button. I tried with preload audio and not, with MP3 and M4A, and my browser works OK as a regular HTML5 audio playback file works simply fine. Now I am clueless.
I am using Edge Animate 4.1 for Mac OS 10.9
    Thanks
    Ignacio

I am using 2014.1 that creates 5.0 Edge Animate files according to what I see in the edge.js files. I think it's the latests as Creative Cloud doesn't offer me any other update so far...
I want to transform this HTML into a phonegap app, and it's not working there either, so I have no interest on testing it on Chrome, also this may work on Safari, so I'm only interested on that, I don't care about other browsers...
Same thing in Edge Animate CC 2014 works perfectly. I have read in other threads of this forum that there are some issues with latest version and audio playback on Safari iOS.

  • Safari HTML5 Audio Bug

    Hello,
With Safari, it is not possible for me to play HTML5-Audio. I've tried it on several demo sites, but always the same.
    e.g. http://demos.w3avenue.com/html5-unleashed-tips-tricks-and-techniques/sample-04-a udio-demo.html
The demo page from Apple also does not work -> http://www.apple.com/html5/showcase/audio/
    Safari 5.0.3
    Windows 7
Does anyone have the same problems?

    Hi,
It's actually a web application i.e. it runs as a series of web pages from a URI. That said, it sizes itself dynamically to render on different devices and is designed to be run on any web browser (mobile or otherwise) on any device. However, I'm encountering issues with mobile browsers (not just Apple I might add) that will not allow preloading of HTML5 audio even if they're on a WiFi connection. I will have to re-think my design and perhaps develop a stand-alone App rather than a web page using similar technologies.

  • Safari 6 lost audio in HTML5 videos

I used to be able to play HTML5 videos in Safari without a problem--but as of the past week or so, I get no audio. I did a couple of courses through Coursera this summer and the HTML5 videos worked fine. But now that I've started new courses, I have to use Chrome (which I don't like) or use the Flash versions of the video which are not as good. Anyone else encountering problems with HTML5 videos audio?
I've seen older posts about Safari not playing nice with Youtube HTML5s; but that's a long time ago and my Safari was working fine with HTML5 until the last week or so.
    My MacBook Pro is mid-2012 and running : OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

I was just searching for a solution to this exact problem before posting it here myself.
I am also a regulat Coursera student and had managed to watch and hear the HTML5 option videos without problem.
It must be difficult to visualise for people who aren't signed up to Coursera but not unlike YouTube, there are both Flash and HTML5 versions of lecture videos with inline content often in the form of quizzes (or tests, as we call them in the UK!). However, unlike YouTube, it is possible to change settings on the video page.
Just recently (probably aroung the same time Dominique noticed problems) the audio ceased functioning using the HTML option and the in video content and quizzes stopped using the Flash option.
I reported the problem to Coursera but got a pretty unhelpful response.
    From Coursera:
Sorry to hear about this, and thank you for letting us know.
We have not had an unusual amount of students reporting issues with the video playback. If its a specific Video, please let us know which one so we can check it. If its the same for all videos on this site, and the problem is slowly getting worse, it sounds like an issue with your browser or cookies and cache.
First, could you please try clearing your browser’s cookies and cache and then let me know if the problem persists? You can find instructions on how to clear various browsers here.
(Link to page which lists the following)
    Google Chrome (newest)
Note: Ubuntu users may have to install the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package to make the videos work in Chromium.
    Firefox (23)
Note: The video speed change feature for lecture watching is not yet supported in Firefox.
    Safari (newest)
    Internet Explorer (9 or newer)
Also, could you kindly tell me what happens if you try this in another browser? You can find a list of Coursera’s supported browsers here.
If those suggestions don’t work, would you mind sending me a screenshot of the problem that you encountered? This will help us better diagnose the issue.
I got the feeling from the response that they hadn't read my message properly as it is not really possible to send a screenshot of either missing quiz or audio.
Anyway, for the record, I had already tried disabling extensions etc. and have cleared cookies and cache as Coursera suggested which has not brought the HTML5 audio back.
Every now and then, I do get an in video quiz using Flash but it's only about one in ten lectures. But the problem is extremely fustrating because it means that I have to load the video lectures multiple times (depending on how many quizzes etc. there are to watch the video in Flash until it reaches a quiz then reload it in HTML5 then reload it in Flash until the next quiz etc. etc.

  • "Autoplay" doesn't work for playing audio in mobile Safari (iphone)?

I have 2 problems that would like solve, please help me. The first one is I've noticed that QuickTime doesn't play audio automatically when setting attribute "Autoplay" to true. The second my problem that I need playback audio in background mode, that is without opening Quicktime player window. Below my code how I try doing it...
    <OBJECT ID='ctl05$MPHolder_MediaPlayer' classid='clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B' codebase='http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab' height=0 width=0> <PARAM name='src' value='http://kvinelearning.eu/iphone/els/IphoneSoundTest/2.mp3'> <EMBED height=0 width=0 SRC='http://kvinelearning.eu/iphone/els/IphoneSoundTest/2.mp3' controller='false' qtsrc='http://kvinelearning.eu/iphone/els/IphoneSoundTest/2.mp3' autoplay='true' PLUGINSPAGE='www.apple.com/quicktime/download' EnableJavaScript='true' NAME='ctl05$MPHolder_MediaPlayer' /></OBJECT>
Thanks all in advance and waiting replies.
    Valeriy.

QuickTimeKirk, thanks a lot for your answer, but I'm interesting in Mobile Safari, not IE, FF or Opera This is these problems appear only for iphone browser, for others ones it works fine, even in Safari for Windows. So, autoplay still doesn't work... And please consult me about quicktime player browser's plugin, I mean why I cannot play sound with javascript function [documetn.getElementById("qtplayer").Play()] without opening sound track in plugin window? I really need playback in background. Or is it feature of quicktime?
    Thank you in advance,
    Valeriy.

  • When will WebGL be supported on iOS Mobile Safari?

In our enterpirse we have developed a WebGL application using Three.js framework. Now, our customer wants it to run on Apple iPad. The problem is that we have found out that WebGL is only supported on iOS by using iAd. So we are wondering when will WebGL be supported on iOS mobile Safari to decide what to do.
    Thanks!

Dunno, it's a bit off topic, but there's no way that an emulated ARM build of flash would even run at all on iOS at the current point, let alone 7 years ago.
It's not that you can't build good flash, it's just that people don't. As you've said, you can use a dumbed down, non-extensible Adobe GUI to spit out javascript, and it'll tank just the same. Adobe Photoshop used to be the most blazingly fast application on the Mac. Adobe are a different story these days. Flash is a resource hog, whereas javascript is outright inefficient at moving graphics around, although it is improving substantially.
Flex, on the other hand, is open source.
Flash was actually created by Adobe. Adobe owned the vector graphics bezier patents, so Macromedia couldn't build a GUI editor for their Shockwave platform, which was sort of C++ territory, for making CD ROMS. Not used a lot because of the manual type of input required.
Macromedia bought flash as a cheapo animation program with some strange usability ideas (such as applying boolean intersects to overlapping objects without asking you), but combining this legally-released and patent-free GUI editor with shockwave export capabilities made shockwave accessible to non-technical users. Who would pile on loads of effects, run it natively as an app to test, and then deploy it in a web plugin which runs far less efficiently. That's not exactly Flash's fault, but the fact that they've just ported it wholesale a whole bunch of times without a proper human rewrite makes for evil performance, a problem you don't have with javascript. You don't have to get what Adobe want to give you as a binary, like it or lump it.
iOS ***** in many ways, the fact that you have to reverse engineer everything and crack if you want to get even the most basic level of customisability and extensibility that you would expect on any decent computer is genuinely frightening. That device could also be up to absolutely anything behind your back, and you'd be none the wiser staring at the GUI. Just trust apple. Or ask somebody who has been prodding around in there with a sharp screwdriver.
Neither Adobe nor Apple have an entirely ideal character for the relationship to have worked. Adobe own a shedload of patents when it comes to the maths behind image processing technology. Adobe Postscript is built into OSX, comes from NeXT. Mr Jobs lost his rag with Adobe when Adobe forced Apple programmers to work on the code related to PostScript in some sort of high security bunker, and wouldn't let them take away anything but binaries. This made the development work a massive hassle. The Apple programmers also suggested that a lot of the code was hidden out of shame rather than out of protectionism. Adobe's real strength is legalised monopolies on basic image processing technology, they've owned it since they turned over Paintbox's patents on alpha blending of pixels.
Been using Apple & Adobe products as my day to day workhorse stuff for over 20 years. Adobe used to be just as bad as the other software firms for generally mean behaviour, but they did write hand-optimised C++, and every year they'd raise the bar with features that you actually need. Each new version would save you weeks in a month.
Post-internet, whole different ballgame. Different setup, $bns at stake now. Land grab for the new ultra-consumerised computer technology. The good thing about consumers is that you can subject them to abuse, they get a yea or nay decision. Do you want what we're giving you?
These sorts of computer industry companies used to be toolmakers for the graphics industry.
Now they're supplying the communications technology for everything. Consumables plugged into every industry in the world. That sort of power is a corrupting influence.

  • IOS 8 Mobile Safari Issues

Since upgrading to iOS 8 I have experienced issues when using Safari to log into my mobile bank. During the log in process, after entering the 3rd requested character of my password, the focus automatically 'tabs' from this field but the 'Continue' button is not responsive and a blue 'cursor' appears behind it. To continue I have to either click back into the last password character field and click 'Go' or click back into another field on the screen which then 'enables' the button.
I did not have this issue in iOS7 and Chrome browser does not have the issue. The website has not been changed so why has it suddenly changed its behaviour since the upgrade?
Further to this, since the iOS 8.1 upgrade, the 'scroll wheels' used to select, say, a date of birth do not 'remember' the value that you have scrolled to if you click on the next entry field without selecting 'Done'. Again, this was fine until the 8.1 upgrade.
I don't think saying that websites aren't compatible with the Safari updates is good enough as all other browsers I've used do not have the issue.
    Any suggestions?
I'm definitely taking the plunge and using Chrome from now on (any issues I've reported seem to have been fixed within a few days), if not moving away from Apple all together if an issue isn't acknowledged and/or fixed (I can see via Google searches that other people are experiencing issues).

I've experienced something similar in that I was on vacation and trying to access the hotel's wifi. And what you expect to happen happened, click on the network to join and the terms and conditions page comes up. My  mobile safari even said 'done' as in that it was a success. But in reality the right page hadn't come up and while it showed that I was online,, I really wasn't. I had to open a different browser to get the proper terms page to come up.
I do think there is an issue with how safari handles certain codes. Unfortunately I don't think there is much a user can do beyond have the work around (having browsers other than safari handy). If Apple decides to fix any coding issues with Safari, they'll just quietly do it and roll it out with an iOS update.
You can send them feedback and let them know that your bank's site doesn't work but beyond that there's not much users can do.

  • Disable AirPlay in Mobile Safari

I see a lot of questions about enabling AirPlay, but I actually need to disable it for certain videos I have on my site. I found Apple's guide on doing this in HTML5 at http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/AudioVideo/Conceptual/AirPl ayGuide/AirPlayGuide.pdf. However, when I did what it said to opt out (x-webkit-airplay="disallow") it didn't disable AirPlay at all. I found other sites that suggested using the word "deny" instead of "disallow" and if I do that, I still have AirPlay but the audio only. However, when I push that to my Apple TV via AirPlay, it exposes the stream URL instead of any "nice" metadata; this is a live stream using .m3u8.
    So my questions are:
Is there any way to truly remove AirPlay entirely via HTML5 and Mobile Safari? (I know there are bookmarklet hacks to re-enable it but we're looking at the common user in this scenario, who won't think of that.)
If the best I can do is disable the video push, which is acceptable, is there any way to control what Apple TV shows on screen for the audio track?
    Thanks.

  • Image Won't Display In Mobile Safari

I'm developing a website, it validates properly, and it works perfectly in Chrome, FireFox, Internet Explorer, and Desktop Safari. The only problem that I'm having with it is in Mobile Safari for iOS. I have a div element with an <img> tag inside it. On a desktop browser, it will show it. However, iOS will display a missing image icon instead. This only occurs on iOS. You can test it out yourself by going to http://covu.optini.com first in your desktop browser and then again in your Mobile Safari browser. Could anyone please give me some insight as to why this would be happening? Thanks. All the other images display correctly in Mobile Safari.

Update: It works perfectly on iOS5 Mobile Safari. It isn't working on iOS 4.3.3's Safari.
I hate to double post, but the edit button wasn't showing up.

  • HTML5 Audio CSS broken in iOS8 UIwebview

I am using the HTML5 <audio> tag in UIwebview in a number of Apps.
The style of the audio bar and the controls is preset by Apple and that's fine, but I could use CSS to give the audio tag the desired width.
Up to iOS7, this worked nicely (e.g. "audio {width:100%;}" would stretch the audio element to full width, including the progress bar).
In iOS8, Apple obviously broke the CSS Support, so I cannot resize the audio bar in any way.
Can I hope that this will be restored in an iOS update soon?
Or are there any other possibilities to change the size of HTML5 audio elements?

    Volume Control in Firefox 11+
This is an problem that has cropped up recently. Some of you may have noticed that the volume controls have disappeared from the audio player in Firefox 11+. True, you can mute it, and the volume controls are still controllable via the keyboard’s up and down keys, but the volume slider itself was removed due to two bugs. I assume this will return in the future, but for now, in case you were wondering what happened to them, it’s not your fault. (You can, of course, use the Media API to build your own set of custom controls.)
