Modifying Shortcut Menus - how do you do it?

Is it possible to modify existing "Shortcut Menus" (used to be called contextual menus I think) to have other items or modify the current choices? These are the menus if you right-click or control-click on something in most, if not all, applications.
What I would like to do is to add items to the list of the "Open With" when you right-click on a file in Finder. I don't want to do an "always open with" but just want a specific program in the list of choices that is not there currently. I was hoping that Finder would "learn" about this choice after doing the same thing many times, but it doesn't seem to be able to learn new choices and put them in the list.
Would also like to be able to put items in Safari's right-click menu.
Another funny thing that happened today is that in Safari, I right-clicked on a link, and instead of the normal "Open Link in New Window" there was the string "localized string not found", and in fact a couple of the menu items had this string instead of what should have been there. Any ideas about this funny "bug"?
Have looked but can't find anything yet to help tell me how to do this or what the "localized string not found" is implying?
Thanks very much...
-Bob

Contextual Menu Modules are special files (plug-ins) installed in one of the three Contextual Menu Items folders in OS X - one in /System/Library/, one in /Library/, and one in /Home/Library/. Existing CMMs cannot be directly modified. There are also some built-in CMMs that are integrated into OS X but are not located in any of the above mentioned folders.
If a default application does not appear in the Open With drop down menu, then select the Other option from the menu. A file Open dialog will appear and you can then locate the application you want to use as the default for a specific file association. If you want the association to apply to all files of the particular type then after choosing the default application click on the Change All button.
As for your Safari problem I'm not sure what is the cause of it, but I would assume something is either missing or corrupted. I would start by trying the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
It's also possible that if you've been mucking around in the system software or in application packages, then you may have inadvertently moved, damaged, etc. some essential component.

  • Party HD and Passport HD menus - how do you get rid of them ?

I am building a project and it complained that I have Passport HD menu as an "orphan".
I just ignored and built.  Seems to be transcoding ok.
In the past, I've had the dreaded Party HD menu pop into my project from nowhere.
Both of these menus entered the project without being invited and have caused me problems in the past.
A while ago I had to build my project up again from zero after Party HD caused me problems.
Whats the best way of dealing with these menus if they turn up in your project uninvited?

Both of these menus entered the project without being invited and have caused me problems in the past.
Well, the Party, at least, is the default in the default menu group, so you probably did "invite" it in, even if unintended.  Sorta like Bill Hunt or Robodog in the lounge.  A simple "snakes" and there they are....
The real issue, as you have discovered and struggled with, is that sometimes, they won't leave when "uninvited."
Whats the best way of dealing with these menus if they turn up in your project uninvited?
Try to undo if you catch it at the magic moment.  Delete if later.  If the delete results in the orphan message, I don't think anyone has found a true solution.  Ignore and proceed, or start over are the two methods that work.

  • How to programatically set and save shortcut menus in to a control?

I want to create some some shortcut menus for multiple controls of the same type, I want to do it programatically so I dont have to go one by one editing the custom menus, or copy paste the same control since I would have to re-build all my controls every time I want to add a new shortcut menu option (becouse I dont know yet how many options I will need). How can I programatically add a element to the shortcut menu of a control, and save it in to it? For example, in shortcut menu activation event, I can modify add/remove elements, but this do not save on to the shortctu menu you edit statically in edit mode of the vi. Ty!

There is no need for a time out. If someone right clicks on the control with the menu, a menu activation event is fired for that control. If the make a selection a menu selection event is fired for the control, otherwise it is like they never clicked on the control in the first place, nothing happens.
Write a small example for yourself and run it with execution highlighting turned on. You'll see what I mean.

I recently purchased an external hard drive to back up my iMovies. When I try to open the movies on the backup I get a message "you may not have permission to modify that folder" How do I change permissions on the backup?

    Hi
One Must NEVER move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Projects - or - alike
on DESKTOP/FINDER - Ever ! - ONLY Within the iMovie Program ! else all connections are broken and hard to impossibly to mend !
but rather do as described here under
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • How do you change the shortcut keys for Firefox in Welsh For Mac?

I'm using Firefox in Welsh on Mac (asking in English to hopefully get more answers), and every time I try to do the shortcut for copy (cmd+C), it hides the window (since Hide in Welsh is Cuddio, the shorcut for that is now Cmd+C). I usually forget this, and proceed with using the shortcut for copy only to anger myself when I realise that I've hidden the window.
My question is, how do you change the shortcut keys on Firefox so then I can change the Hide shortcut and give Copy the cmd+C shortcut? I'm also using OpenOffice.org in Welsh, and they are using cmd+C for copy and cmd+H for Hide.
Is there any way that I could do this myself? Its rather annoying for me, and its rather weird to use Cmd+X for Cutting text instead of copying.
    Thanks.

This could be worth a bug. It shouldn't happen that some shortcut keys get (re)used for other actions and Cmd + C should be considered as one of them.
You can try to make the change in this file: cy.jar/locale/browser/baseMenuOverlay.dtd
    <pre><nowiki><!ENTITY hideThisAppCmdMac.label "Cuddio &brandShortName;">
    <!ENTITY hideThisAppCmdMac.commandkey "C"></nowiki></pre>
    English language pack: en-GB.jar/locale/browser/baseMenuOverlay.dtd
    <pre><nowiki><!ENTITY hideThisAppCmdMac.label "Hide &brandShortName;">
    <!ENTITY hideThisAppCmdMac.commandkey "H"></nowiki></pre>
You can find the file cy.jar in the chrome folder in the Firefox application folder.<br />
The file cy.jar is a ZIP archive, so you need a program that can open such an archive and edit the file baseMenuOverlay.dtd.
I'm not on a Mac, so can't do any testing in this matter. I just downloaded the Welsh (cy.xpi) language pack for Mac and had a look in it.

  • How do you modify the default Execute thread count in Weblogic Server 9.2?

How do you modify the default Execute thread count in Weblogic Server 9.2?
How can you tune the starting number of weblogic.ExecuteThread on server startup and/or set minimum number?
Is there an option from the console?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

Self tuning will automatically manage the threads but however you can still control the min and max by adding the min and max values for each instance either directly adding in config.xml or through JVM settings
    1) Modifying the config.xml
Just add the following line(s) to each server definition :
    <server>
    <name>AdminServer</name>
    <self-tuning-thread-pool-size-min>100</self-tuning-thread-pool-size-min>
    <self-tuning-thread-pool-size-max>200</self-tuning-thread-pool-size-max>
    </server>
    2) Adding some JVM parameters
It's safer the following way :
add the following option in your command line : -Dweblogic.threadpool.MinPoolSize=100

  • In iMovie, how do you modify the duration of all the clips at once?

In iMovie, using Mavericks O/S, how do you modify the duration of all the clips at once?

To set the duration of any clips to be added in the future select the project then "Settings" above the viewer.    Adjust the slider to the right of "Clips" to the desired duration.
To change clips already in the timeline, select all of the ones you want to change (so they have a yellow border), click on "Adjust" then click the info button (i in a circle).  You will see "Duration:"  Set the time in seconds and press return.

  • How do you add/make properties to layers/timeline without shortcuts?

How do you add scale, position etc to a layer on the timeline without using shortcut keys?
I used the tools to scale and whatnot, and know you can use shortcuts but is there a menu where you can add those properties and make them show up in the timeline?

I'm not sure that I understand your question.
Every layer has a Position property and a Scale property. You don't need to add them.
If you're asking about how to _show_ the properties, then it's just a matter of clicking the triangle next to the layer name in the Timeline panel and then clicking the triangle next to the name of the property group. (The Position and Scale properties are in the Transform property group.)
See this page: "Layer properties in the Timeline panel"

  • How can you modify the displayed columns on a Related Information List?

How can you modify the displayed columns on a Related Information List? For example, how could you add the "Type" column to the List of columns displayed for Service Requests when you are viewing the Contacts Detail page?
    Thanks

I'd have to say I think this is one of the biggest flaws in the OnDemand system currently. The solution I have come up with is to create reports and put them in webapplets showing the data I want to show. I have then removed the standard Related Info List Objects and added weblinks to create new records as the button on the List object is also gone.
Keep in mind that doing this does slow things down a little, so it may not work if you have a big user base.

  • How do you crop an image, then modify that cropping?

This takes the cake for simpleton question of the day.
Cropping an image in Illustrator or in InDesign is a breeze.
But how do you control it in Fireworks?
I make a selection with the marquee tool, go to edit and choose crop selected bitmap.
Now, do you mean to tell me that there is no way to modify that crop after the fact?
Can you at least delete the crop without deleting the image?
    This cant be this unintuitive.
    Surely Im missing something...

Masks, yes, masks are great! If you just want to hide parts of your image from view, create a mask. Masks can be other bitmaps or vector objects. Create and position your mask object over your original bitmap. Select both then Modify > Mask > Group as Mask. You can easily undo the masking. White areas in a mask reveal the underlying object. Black or transparent areas in the mask cause your original image to be transparent for those pixels. Grey or semi-transparent produce a proportionally transparent result.
There's also the Paste Inside option, where you can paste your bitmap into a vector shape. The nice thing there is that you can move your bitmap around. (I'm pretty sure, anyway. I don't use this feature.)
Anyway. You have lots of options to remove or hide pixels. The approach you take depends on your needs and preferences.
If you have an image to share and a goal to achieve, we might be able to advise you better.
