Modifying XML Stored in a CLOB

I've got XML documents stored in a column using the CLOB datatype on a 10gR2 database.
We once tried to use the XML type, but there was a 64k size limit I think (can't recall the specifics, maybe that limitation has since been fixed). Do you happen to know?
My problem is that now I need to write a script to modify the format of the date found between the <date-created> </date-created> XML tags within each CLOB.
For example <date-created>2007-01-01 00:00:00</date-created> would become <date-created>01-01-2007 00:00:00</date-created>.
I can certainly figure out how to parse the XML and do an UPDATE to each row through a PL/SQL script, but before I go down that road I thought I'd ask if there are any tools that might make this task easier for me? I have thousands of entries that need modified, so it must be an automated process.
For example, maybe there are some PL/SQL procedures for manipulating CLOB data?
I figure it doesn't hurt to ask before I start this task if there's an easy way to go about this or if anyone else has had a similar problem to solve and could share the code they used.
Thank you

it's YYYY-MM-DD and other rows (the newer ones) have the format MM-DD-YYYYOk, i thought you're changing the date format for all the rows and hence i was wondering if looping through each row is required or not. Anyway, i still think you can filter out all the rows with the older format, and just use a single update statement to update the xml node values for those.
hr@XE> create table myxml(id number, xmlcol xmltype);
Table created.
hr@XE> insert into myxml values(1, '<root> <date1> 01-04-2007 </date1> </root>');
1 row created.
hr@XE> insert into myxml values(2, '<root> <date1> 11-04-2007 </date1> </root>');
1 row created.
hr@XE> update myxml
set xmlcol = updatexml(xmlcol,'/root/date1/text()',
to_char(to_date(extractvalue(xmlcol,'/root/date1'),'DD-MM-YYYY'),'mm/dd/yyyy')    );
2 row updated.
hr@XE>  select id, xmlcol from myxml;
        ID
XMLCOL
         1
<root>
  <date1>04/01/2007</date1>
</root>

  • Can I create an XSD from XML data in a CLOB?

    Environment:
    Oracle 11.2.0.3 EE on Solaris.
    Very much an XML newbie so please be kind!
    I have spent the past few days pouring through the documentation and various blogs, especially this one, but ... I need some help.
    I am trying to extract XML data stored in a CLOB and produce a flat file for the user's consumption.
    They have sent me what they think is the XSD for the XML data but when I look at the data in the CLOB I don't see the tags documented in the XSD.
    I'd like to produce an XSD based on the actual data to compare with what they've sent.
    Is this possible?
    I am able to query the XML data using the tags I see in the data using XMLTable and it's working fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the XML side of the world, where you will love it and curse it, just like any other piece of technology.
    So as I understand it, the scope of your operation is to extract information from an XML file and then write that information to disk, correct?
    Some questions
    - Why is the XML stored in a CLOB instead of an XMLType column?  Without knowing the system history, it is a valid question.
    - How big are the XML?  The reason I ask this is because when the XML is stored in XMLType columns (of Object Relational structure or SECUREFILE BINARY XML format), then Oracle can parse the XML substantially easier than when it is stored as a CLOB.  If the XML is fairly small, you may see no performance difference between the two.
    The Oracle DB itself has no built in ability to generate a schema from an XML file.  In order to do that, you would need to use some third party tool that has that functionality built in.  For example, XML Spy can do this.  Other tools can as well, but that is what came to mind first as it is what I use.  The one thing to remember is that the schema it builds represents that one instance of XML.  Other instances of XML may be different and not validate against the schema you generated, but still have been valid against the unknown original schema.
    You can register the schema in the database and then use the XML to create an XMLType instance associated to the schema and then validate the XML that way.  One example can be found at XML DB FAQ and here is another example Re: XML Schema validation
    Hope that helps you continue on.

  • Writing reports from XML embedded in a CLOB

    I need to write some reports using custom data that is stored by a COTS application.  This software supplier stores this custom data in an XML structure and then writes it to a CLOB in the table.  We are using Oracle 9.2.0.6.0 and we have the complete BusinessObjects suite of tools.  I guess I'm not sure of an approach on how to get this information out and onto a report - any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Read XML message from a CLOB

    We are currently receiving XML messages from a business partner that goes

    I parse the XML doc into a domdocument and then loop through using xpath.valueof to pull the individual values from the nodes and then build a generic insert. It works quite well with a small number of columns. I'm not sure how it would work with a lot of columns. You can get code examples from Steve Muench's book "Developing Oracle XML Applications".

  • How to retreive the modified XML data?

    Hi..
    i had a problem in retrieving the modified xml data.
    Iam using apache's DOMParser
    In the my class my xml data is stored in a string.so i used following statement to read xml data from that string:
    String abc="<? xml version=... some data goes here"
    InputSource in=new InputSource(new ByteArrayInputStream(abc.getBytes()));
              DOMParser domParser = new DOMParser();
              domParser.parse(in);
              Document doc = domParser.getDocument();
              Element root = doc.getDocumentElement();
    and i did some operations like adding ,removing and replacing elements etc.
    It was fine when the checked the data.
    but..i need my modified xml data as String.
    is there any method to retrieve the modified xml data "as it is" in String?

    You can use XMLSerializer.
    Here is an example that dump your document on the console:
    OutputFormat formatter = new OutputFormat();
    formatter.setPreserveSpace(true);
    XMLSerializer serializer =
    new XMLSerializer(System.out, formatter);
    serializer.serialize(doc);
    where doc is your Document.

  • [Forum FAQ] How do i use xml stored in database as dataset in SQL Server Reporting Services?

    Introduction
    There is a scenario that users want to create SSRS report, the xml used to retrieve data for the report is stored in table of database. Since the data source is not of XML type, when we create data source for the report, we could not select XML as Data Source
    type. Is there a way that we can create a dataset that is based on data of XML type, and retrieve report data from the dataset?
    Solution
    In this article, I will demonstrate how to use xml stored in database as dataset in SSRS reports.
    Supposing the original xml stored in database is like below:
    <Customers>
    <Customer ID="11">
    <FirstName>Bobby</FirstName>
    <LastName>Moore</LastName>
    </Customer>
    <Customer ID="20">
    <FirstName>Crystal</FirstName>
    <LastName>Hu</LastName>
    </Customer>
    </Customers>
    Now we can create an SSRS report and use the data of xml type as dataset by following steps:
    In database, create a stored procedure to retrieve the data for the report in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) with the following query:
    CREATE PROCEDURE xml_report
    AS
    DECLARE @xmlDoc XML;
    SELECT @xmlDoc = xmlVal FROM xmlTbl WHERE id=1;
    SELECT T.c.value('(@ID)','int') AS ID,
    T.c.value('(FirstName[1])','varchar(99)') AS firstName,
    T.c.value('(LastName[1])','varchar(99)') AS lastName
    FROM
    @xmlDoc.nodes('/Customers/Customer') T(c)
    GO
    P.S. This is an example for a given structured XML, to retrieve node values from different structured XMLs, you can reference here.
    Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) OR SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). If this is the first time we have opened SQL Server Data Tools, click Business Intelligence
    Settings for the default environment settings.
    On the File menu, point to New, and then click Project.
    In the Project Types list, click Business Intelligence Projects.
    In the Templates list, click Report Server Project.
    In Name, type project name.
    Click OK to create the project.
    In Solution Explorer, right-click Reports, point to Add, and click New Item.
    In the Add New Item dialog box, under Templates, click Report.
    In Name, type report name and then click Add.
    In the Report Data pane, right-click Data Sources and click Add Data Source.
    For an embedded data source, verify that Embedded connection is selected. From the Type drop-down list, select a data source type; for example, Microsoft SQL Server or OLE DB. Type the connection string directly or click Edit to open the Connection Properties
    dialog box and select Server name and database name from the drop down list.
    For a shared data source, verify that Use shared data source reference is selected, then select a data source from the drop down list.
    Right-click DataSets and click Add Dataset, type a name for the dataset or accept the default name, then check Use a dataset embedded in my report. Select the name of an existing Data source from drop down list. Set Query type to StoredProcedure, then select
    xml_report from drop down list.
    In the Toolbox, click Table, and then click on the design surface.
    In the Report Data pane, expand the dataset we created above to display the fields.
    Drag the fields from the dataset to the cells of the table.

    I have near about 30 matrics. so I need a paging. I did every thing as per this post and it really works for me.
    I have total four columns. On one page it should show three and the remaining one will be moved to next page.
    Problem occurs when in my first row i have 3 columns and in next page if I have one columns then it show proper on first page but on second page also it gives me three columns insted of one. the first column data is exactly what I have but in remaining two
    columns it shows some garbage data.
    I have data like below.
    Metric ColumnNo RowNo
    1 1
    1
    2 2
    1
    3 3
    1
    4 1
    2
    so while grouping i have a row parent group on RowNo and Column group on ColumnNo.
    can anyone please advice on this.

    What software are you using to create the website? Perhaps there is some command you can implement on the website to force the entire file to be downloaded. If you use Dreamweaver, you might ask in that forum. If you make the link an ftp link rather than a http link, you might guarantee that the file will be downloaded in its entirety, but the download location will not necessarily be in a temp folder.

  • Modifying XML files with JDOM

    Hi:
    I've been trying to get up to speed with JDOM, and while it seems pretty intuitive, I've been having a problem w/ modifying XML documents.
    Namely, once I get a Document object from a (skeleton) XML file, do changes made to the Document object through, say, addContent() propagate to the original file? My gut feeling is no, although this was certainly what I had expected initially.
    Here's a code fragment of what I had tried to do to populate a barebones XML file:
                   Document doc = builder.build(output);
              // add 100 elements, all the same
              for (int count = 0; count < 100; count++)
                   Element curr = new Element("book");
                   // create child nodes for book
                   Element title = new Element("title");
                   title.addContent("Book " + (count + 1));
                   Element author = new Element("author");
                   author.addContent("Author " + (count + 1));
                   Element price = new Element("price");
                   price.addContent("Price " + (count + 1));
                   curr.addContent(title);
                   curr.addContent(author);
                   curr.addContent(price);
                   doc.getRootElement().addContent( curr );
              }

    Mikael,
    This sounds like one of the many quirks (perhaps bugs) related to how FrameMaker handles non-FM files in books. The current book model doesn't play well with XML files as chapters and this seems like yet another problem. Apparently, if an xref does not target another .fm file in the book, Frame assumes that the target file is not in the book and therefore will not be in the book PDF.
    There have been discussions here about this in the past. The solution that I use is to run an API client before publishing that converts all XML files to .fm files, and redirect all xrefs appropriately. Then, book features work as expected and PDFs come out as normal. This is not feasible, however, without the automation from the API client.
    There may be some who would say that the best approach is to use XML and books the way that the designers did account for... that is, the whole book becomes an XML document with entity references to the separate chapters. In my work, though, this model was not appropriate... rather, I needed a binary FM book to act like a book, except with XML files as chapters. So, I think I understand your situation.
    Is API programming or FrameScript an option for you? I think it may be the only way to get what you are looking for.

    DB XML has built in encryption support inherited from Berkeley DB. You should use the DbEnv::set_encrypt() method to enable it:

    I am trying to do the exact same thing right now.  I am having moderate success with oItem.GetAsXML into a string, then using REPLACE to change the itemcode value (it exists in about 18 places, for me, because the XML gives you other stuff, like the contents of OITW).
    Then I just write my string to a temp file and bring it back in to the new object and do the add.  Here's my code:
               tempXML = System.IO.Path.GetTempFileName()
                'retrieve template item object's xml into string
                itemObjectXML = zTmpltItm.GetAsXML
                'replace the template item code with the new one
                itemObjectXML = Replace(itemObjectXML, String.Format(ItemCodeXML, zTmpltItm.ItemCode), _
                                String.Format(ItemCodeXML, zNewCode))

    The one thing I wonder about is how large can the XML string end up being.  I think .net has a 32K limit, but the GetAsXML function does return a string.
    I'm doing this in 2007 and I have a problem with some of the values returned, however (like the SHGHT1Unit field).  I have a separate post for that one.
    I don't know if my way is "best practice" or even advisable, but I do have it working.
    PS: you've got to have this statement before doing the xml copying:
    oCompany.XmlExportType = SAPbobsCOM.BoXmlExportTypes.xet_ExportImportMode
    Added a PS
