Monitor RAC (nodeapps, scan, etc)
Hi,
We have recently set up a 11g RAC environment but we could not find any way of monitoring the nodeapps, scan vips, crs in Grid Control 11g. We get notify if an instance or listener is down but if a CRS or VIP is down or relocated, is there a way of getting alert messages from Grid Control?
Thanks.
Yes ... you can achieve that ..
First you need to configure the cluster using below link :

TNS-12520 when connecting via TCPS on 11gR2 RAC with SCAN Listener
I am struck trying to implement TCPS on our Oracle RAC SCAN Listener. I have added to our Oracle 12c systems, but not on a RAC with SCAN.
I created a wallet and certificate on one of the nodes, and copied it to the node and created auto login on each node. I exported the trust.jks and identity.jks, and loaded them in my test java program as the trust store and key stores. I have added the wallet location to the listener tns and sql ora files.
When attempting a TCPS connection, the ssl handshake succeed, but the client reports error:
ORA-12520, TNS:listener could not find available handler for requested type of server
The nodes scan listener log reports the TNS error, listener_scan1/alert/log.xml, when the connection is using TCPS on port 2484:

How to monitor RAC services and nodeapps in Grid Control
Hi,
I have created a number of RAC service names such as GL on a 2-node RAC and would like to use Grid control 10.2.0.2 to monitor the availability of those services and nodeapps. I was not able to find anything in Grid Control that would allow me to configure that. What are being monitored now are the listeners, database instances and nodes. Would it be possible to monitor more than just the RAC listeners, instances and nodes?
thanks.I don´t think that there is an out-of-the-box metric. However, CRS monitors your services and Grid Control monitors CRS errors. If you need more granular monitoring, I have 2 suggestions:
1) user callouts:
2) extending oracle enterprise manager
I have written a paper on how to extend oem at [http://www.ora-solutions.net/web/papers/]
"Extending Oracle Enterprise Manager to collect HP-UX glance data"
You can follow the instructions to build a new target type called "RAC_SERVICE" and add your serivces as targets, e.g. S_BATCH, S_ONLINE, S_HR.

Best Practice for monitoring RAC 11gR2
Hi,
I have RAC 11gR2+ASM on two nodes.
I would like to get your advice what are the most critical things i should monitor - Regarding RAC COMPONENCTS
ThanksHi,
here i am mentioning some basic monitoring
1)interconnect switch is working properly or not(private network)
2) check which instances are running on which nodes
3) check if ASM,listeners,nodeapps,gsd,vip..... are running or not.
Each instance carrying planned load (balanced?).
– Shared storage access is equal.
– Interconnect Load
-Latency
– High CPU usage - Oracle processes getting enough resources.?
Thanks -
Looking for opinions on the X-rite product colormunki or spyder etc. to calibrate my monitors with the Epson 3880. My preview screen for printing in LR 5.7.1 looks VERY grainy (at times) and often the printer does not produce accurate color renditions of the monitor screen. Do folks have an opinion on this or a path they followed to produce the best prints having post processed in both Lightroom and Photoshop?
Excellent. Thank you. I did not realize that you were working with two sets of profiles, one for the monitor to ensure correct color/brightness etc that best duplicates what you will receive from the printer, and a second color profile that adjusts the printers interpretation of the print colors for the type of medium (paper, e.g., gloss, hot press, etc) that you are using to produce the product. This now makes sense to me. Therefore, if I am using the correct color management profile in the color management section of the LR print module, e.g. let's say an Epson Hot press paper, if my printed product does not render the colors in the same manner as I viewed them on the monitor, my next step would be to calibrate my monitors using a X-rite device or Spyder etc.
Going back to the X-rite Colormunki verses for example a spyder of x-rite i1Display Pro, I assume that the colormunki is able to create a profile for both a monitor as well as the paper you are using. The Colormunki is twice the price of the i1Display Pro. (I guess it scans the paper). Unless you are using a non-standard paper from a manufacturer that HAS NOT created a profile which you can download, you do not need a Colormunki and the i1Display Pro (or Spyder) to calibrate the monitor is all that is necessary.
Finally, your point about ensuring you do not "double" manage the color profile in the software (LR or PS) and the printer driver software is very helpful. The Epson 3880 printer driver allows you to turn off the color management by the printer but you also can set an input profile, printer profile, and a host of other settings etc depending on your production objective. You were correct in that, in some cases,I was double managing the color, hence, my product was much more accurate when I choose one or the other.
Thanks again for being so clear and taking the time to respond in detail. Much appreciated. -
Hi,
Do I need to consider and resgister SCAN with DNS or just use SCAN as VIP before I install RAC 11G R2 ?Hi,
In case you decide to use the Grid Naming Service (GNS),the GNS daemon will allocate three IP addresses from the range of addresses offered by the DHCP server. The IP addresses are Address records in DNS that resolve to the SCAN name in a round robin fashion
In /etc/hosts on each node of the cluster – a single IP for the whole cluster. Helps bypass the OUI installer limitation of DNS defined SCAN.

Hello,
I'm curious as to how some folks monitor their RAC clusters with 3rd party application?. I'm concerned about the VIP mostly and to ensure DB connectivity.
VIP doesn't bind PORT on other nodes, When I down node 1
This is the problem I' running into with my VIP tests. When I sat back and thought about it, I'm sure RAC is doing this as designed.
Recently we had a problem were a NODE was doing a call trace for ever. All processes were halted. the VIP was ping able. Port was open, and connections could be made, however the listeners could not respond. This in fact caused an outage with a 3 node cluster due to the fact that the VIP was mostly available from a TCP point of view.
My tests will use this to connect:
(DESCRIPTION =(LOAD_BALANCE=on)(FAILOVER=on)(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = VIP1)(PORT = 1525))(CONNECT_DATA =(SERVER = DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME = DEVN.domain.com)(FAILOVER_MODE=(TYPE=SELECT)(METHOD=BASIC)(RETRIES=12)(DELAY=5))))
Changing the ADDRESS for each VIP in the cluster. This ensures we test each vip individually every time and we can use the service_name. In theory, if the failed over VIP on another node was listening on the correct port, we would see the VIP up and responding to queries, even tho another server was down.
In my recent problem, Oracle Grid control FAILED to realize anything was down as well.
My next plan was to figure out a monitor that would do the DB query, if the DB query failed due to VIP fail over, ensure that we get a "connection refused" and it's ping able and still call it "good".
Any other suggestions?user9932993 wrote:

In theory, if the failed over VIP on another node was listening on the correct port, we would see the VIP up and responding to queries, even tho another server was down. As far as I am aware, you will not be able to connect to the database in the explained config above because there won't be a listener process running on this IP address. If the VIP fails over to another node, only the VIP will be failed over, not the listener, unless you configure a package in Clusterware that the listener should also fail over. In the given scenario you should not be able to connect if the VIP has failed over to another node (again, as far as I am aware).
Or do you mean "replying to pings" in stead of "responding to queries"?

How to Monitor RAC "Health" and how to Administer
Now, we are using the RAC that we have setup... i am managing now 11.2.0.3 RAC on windows and 10.2.0.5 RAC on OEL...
Can I ask, what are the things that needs to be checked in these setup...like what are the logs that I need to check.. how do i monitor well the Clusters...
its like what are the things that I have to constantly monitor in RAC..sort of RAC "health" monitoring....
thanks!Hi

Monitoring RAC services in Windows
I have a 2 node RAC database installed on Win 2003. I've had the Database service go down a few times kind of "magically". I'm looking into the kind of magic that caused this (suspect it was a storage issue), but in the mean-time I need to send out an alert to someone if this goes down. Does anyone have a good way/tool to monitor OS services and send out an e-mail when one goes down?
Aren't you using grid control?

Hi
suppose that I have got a RAC (Oracle 11gR2) environment and my SCAN IPs are
172.21.28.115
172.21.28.116
172.21.28.117
I can define TNS name like this
RAC=(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=scan)(PORT=1521))
(CONNECT_DATA=
(SERVICE=DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME=rac.com)
)Consider that I don't want use DNS in client side ,_But my RAC servers have a DNS for SCAN_
for example my application server can't use DNS
Now can I substitute the IPs with scan like follow example ?
RAC=(DESCRIPTION =
(LOAD_BALANCE=YES)
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=172.21.28.115)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=172.21.28.116)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=172.21.28.117)(PORT=1521))
(CONNECT_DATA=
(SERVICE=DEDICATED)

)Do I miss any thing if I don't use DNS in Clients?
thanksConsider that I don't want use DNS in client side ,But my RAC servers have a DNS for SCANyou can still use VIP to make connectivity even you've configured SCAN.
entry would be same as we were using in 10g.

Hi,
In ACR I adjust the image so that it looks OK for me.
But there are a little differences in ACR and PS viewing the image (color, contrast etc).
In programs like windows foto-viewer there is an other difference (relative to ACR and PS) >> images have more contrast and darker than viewing in PS.
An other program Irfanview shows the image with less color (saturisation).
I have made a test print (in a photo centre), that image results in something between Irfanview and PS.
Question:
What is the best program or way to adjust the color / contrast etc so that I get an photo-image (on paper) that is the same as what I see on mij monitor screen.THANKS! STATION_TWO for the "over-correct-answer" you give................
If I'm honest, the answer of Richard was for me enough to realize where I made a "wrong inference" in understanding color management.
He is for me the best teacher in this case, I've learned something from him because he's talking on my level.
By the way: the english language is not my native language... so my questions should have to be read with understanding of grammatical expressions from other languages >> ("The color management is know by me…").
Again: Richard, in this case, read my question properly and has helped me on my way. -

Any ideas?How does SCAN work?
“When a client submits a request, the SCAN listener listening on a SCAN IP address and the SCAN port is contracted on a client’s behalf. Because all services on the cluster are registered with the SCAN listener, the SCAN listener replies with the address of the local listener (Using SCAN the connection is initiated using the SCANIP, but is established using the VIP) on the least-loaded node (Each scan listener keeps updated cluster load statistics) where the service is currently being offered. Finally, the client establishes connection to the service through the listener using VIP on the node where service is offered. All of these actions take place transparently to the client without any explicit configuration required in the client.”
So, to SCAN Works you must aware:
Server (cluster)
-The service must be registered on Local/Scan ListenerI believe I've done this now but see below.
Database (rac)
-You must use remote_listener parameterThe remote listener parameter I have is:
SQL> show parameter remote listener
NAME TYPE VALUE
remote_dependencies_mode string TIMESTAMP
remote_listener string rac-scan:1521
remote_login_passwordfile string EXCLUSIVE
remote_os_authent boolean FALSE
remote_os_roles boolean FALSE
result_cache_remote_expiration integer 0
Cient
-Must resolve all SCAN Names and VIP Names (check with nslookup)I'd made a mistake there. My VIP names were not available from DNS.
-Must access port of Listener
Try it:
http://levipereira.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/configuring-client-to-use-scan-11-2-0/
Thanks, that document was useful however I don't think I've got it completely right as yet as I have no listener_scan2.

Script fro monitoring RAC services when they failover or relocate to other
when SERVICE relocate/failover to NODE1? how to catch this.? Do we have any monitoring for Services and where they are running?
Hi,
yes the Event Monitor of the clusterware will notify this.
And you can react on these information (on the server) with the help of a FAN Callout:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/hafeats.htm#RACAD7133
You even could react on client side. In this case you would use ONS (Oracle Notification Service).

A scan ??????
Thank youHi @twonsy,
I see by your post that you are unable to scan, when running the Print and Scan Doctor, you got a error on the Twain.
I can help you with this.
I have provided some steps to setup Admin rights on a new user account, check the Services and to install the printer again.
Please follow these steps:
Create a new profile with Administrator Rights. Create a user account .
On the Windows 8, hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box.
Check the Windows Image Acquisition Services:
On the Windows 8, hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box.
Type in services.msc and click on OK.
In the Window, please right click on Windows Image Acquisition Service and then click on Properties.
In the Properties window, please click on Dependencies window and check the dependencies.
It should be “Remote Procedure Call” and “Shell Hardware Detection”. If you find anything else, please advise.
Close the Properties window.
In the main Services window, in the list make sure Windows Image Acquisition Service shows 'Started' in the Status column and 'Automatic' for the Startup Type. If the option to stop is available, click stop and then click start.
In the main Services window, in the list make sure that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) shows as 'Started' in the Status column and 'Automatic' for the Startup Type.
In the main Services window, in the list make Shell Hardware Detection services shows as 'Started' in the Status column and 'Automatic' for the Startup Type.
If the other two in the services are not started, please restart these services and then restart the Windows Image Acquisition service. Just right click and select start on each one.
Temporarilty turn off the Antivirus software and the Real Time scanning through the Antivirus software, since it may stop the services.
When you run the installation, right click on it and Run as Administrator.
Please let me know the results.
Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!
