Monitoring Database with a Firewall

What's the recommended procedure for monitoring (via OMS) a database that has a firewall? Install a separate OMS on the same side of the firewall for the given database - or use a central OMS repository on the other side of the firewall? What are the strengths/weaknesses of each? If I use a central OMS repository - then I must open ports to communicate between the 2 - which can be a weakness to the DMZ. I prefer the central OMS repository if at all possible.
Just looking to see what other folks have implemented.

Firewall is built into the Security Center for XP and Vista, updates in place, so why do you need another 'free' one?  Also, the better AV programs also have a firewall quality to enhance the operation. Not aware of any WLM conflicts.

  • Web AS 6.40 Sneak Preview: Problems with monitoring Database with SQL Studi

    Hello!
I'm new with SAP and SAP Web AS, and I installed the SAP Web AS 6.40 Sneak Preview recently. I'm exercizing with the tutorials, and in the Tutorial "Car rental Application", a "QCR_RESERVATION" database is created and deployed.
The deployment worked fine, but I'm having problems accessing the SAP DB with SQL Studio.
At first, I didn't find SQL studio in my SAP installation, so I installed it afterwards. I now tried to log on with the data mentioned in the tutorial (localhost, C11, SAPC11DB and "sap"), and got the error "Database not running (-709)". Looking at the SAP Management Console, I found a database with the name "J2E", so I tried this one.
But now the problem is, that with user SAPJ2EDB and password "sap", I get the error "(-4008) Unknown username and password", and the same error with the combination "control", "control".
What is my mistake? Could anybody give me a hint? Maybe there is something wrong with my Web AS 6.40 Sneak Preview Installation? I don't remember having changed any settings during installation ...
    Thank you in advance
    Bärbel Wolf

    Dale, thank you very much.
Your hint really is useful, I know myself, I'd most probably need unlocking my admin user soon. )
But nevertheless, I'm still looking for the right password for the database user "SAPJ2EDB".
As I'm encountering problems with the "Quick Car Reservation" tutorial (the entity bean seems unable to access the database, too), I'd like to check the QCR_RESERVATION database with my SQL Studio. Maybe there's something wrong with it.
    Greetings
    Bärbel

  • Alert Log File Monitoring of 8i and 9i Databases with EM Grid Control 10g

Is it possible to monitor alert log errors in Oracle 8i/9i Databases with EM Grid Control 10g and EM 10g agents? If yes, is it possible to get some kind of notification?
I know that in 10g Database, it is possible to use server generated alerts, but what about 8i/9i?
    Regards,
    Martin

    Hello
i am interested in a very special feature: is it possible to get notified if alerts occur in alert logs in an 8i/9i database when using Grid control and the 10g agent on the 8i/9i systems?
Moreover, the 10g agent should be able to get Performance Data using the v$ views or direct sga access without using statspack, right?
Do you know where I can find documentation about the supported features when using Grid Control with 8i/9i databases?

  • Apex with Database XE behind Firewall?

Hi. I have an Apex application that I would like to put up on the Internet. The associated database must be protected with a firewall between it and the HTTP server. I would like to use the Express Edition (XE) version of the database, at least initially.
Is it possible with XE to have a listener connect through a firewall to an HTTP Server?

Absolutely, wasn't talking about the internet facing firewall in the DMZ but the inner firewall between the OHS/Apex Listener server and Database. Obviously the best solution is to have a reverse proxy server in the DMZ (i.e. between inner and outer firewalls) and the OHS and database on the internal side of the DMZ.
First case Standard HTTP or HTTPS port open on the outer DMZ firewall to OHS/Apex Listener Server obviously better to be HTTPS, SQLNET listener port to access Database on the inner firewall better if it's a not the standard 1521
Second Case Standard HTTP or HTTPS port open on the outer DMZ firewall to reverse proxy server, non-standard HTTP(s) e.g. 7777 to OHS server on the inner firewall there would be no firewall between OHS and Database in this case.

  • Unable to monitor two databases with same name on two different hosts

I have got two databases with same name on two different hosts. I added one database to the list of monitored databases. Now If I try to add the other one , I get the message that the database is already being managed.
Can't we monitor two databases with same name on two different hosts?

you can... while saving the target, give a different name.. for eg target-2

  • BC4J is not Working with a Firewall

I have developed a BC4J application with JDeveloper 9.0.3.1 and have deployed it to Oracle 9iAS 9.0.3 on RedHat 9. The application server resides in our company DMZ and connects through a firewall to Oracle 9iDB.
I monitored the connections at the database and two of the connections (one old and one new) are used every time I access the database.
The application fails with a broken pipe after about 15 minutes (the firewall timeout). It works fine with no firewall. I believe it fails because it can not check the old connections due to the firewall blocking them.
How to I keep this from happening? How can I make the application server open a new connection every time with out checking the old connections? BC4J seems to fail when I turn off pooling or implements any of the other changes suggested by the following threads:
BC4J AM pooled sessions dropped by firewall
Removing an Application Module form the Pool in a JSP Page
    Thanks,

    Hi Adrian,
Actually, the query I have post was a simplification of the real one.
The real one is the following, and there I think it is not possible to rewrite it without the group by>
    SELECT T1.ItemCode , SUM(T1.OpenQty) , SUM(T2.OnHand) , SUM(T1.OpenQty)- SUM(T2.OnHand)
    FROM RDR1 T1 inner JOIN OITW T2 on T1.ItemCode = T2.ItemCode
    WHERE T2.WhsCode = '01'
    GROUP BY T1.ItemCode
    HAVING SUM(T1.OpenQty)- SUM(T2.OnHand) > 0
Anyway, thank you very much for your idea.

    Hello Manisha,
The one of the possible reasons for this is due to lack of H/W.
Increase your RAM size to atleast 2GB and utilise the same while you are installing ECC in database parameters step..
If the issue is with H/W, then this should fix the issue.
    Hope it helps,
    Regards,
    Satish.

  • Co-location of persistent chat and monitoring databases on Standard Edition server

Hello, I've seen all kinds of different answers to this question around the web with conflicting answers.
We have a basic IM/Presence only install of Lync 2013 and now want to deploy Monitoring and Persistent Chat roles.
As per this blog, it states you can co-locate all of these on one FE server.
    http://windowspbx.blogspot.ca/2012/07/aaa-donotpost-install-lync-standard.html
Which does match what this TechNet article states:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398131.aspx
However, in the Blog, it says you need to install Full SQL Server 2008 in order to collocate, yet this goes against what TechNet says is possible, in that you can have all databases in one instance:
Each SQL instance can contain only a single back-end database (for an Enterprise Edition Front End pool), single Monitoring database, single Archiving database, single persistent chat database, and single persistent chat compliance database.
I guess my question is, can I simply install Monitoring and Persistent Chat using the same default SQL Server 2012 instance that was installed along with the Front End Standard Edition server (RTC instance)? Or should I create a new instance? Or do I need
to install a new SQL Server 2012 somewhere on a different server altogether?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Lync standard edition server has SQL express database by default to host RTC instance. Monitoring server required SQL reporting services, SQL express does not have reporting components part of it. Hence, you required full SQL version for monitoring
    and archiving deployment.
Technically, you can install full SQL server on the standard edition server itself. But , it is not recommended in production environment. It's good idea to install SQL server on a dedicated server for hosting monitoring and archiving database.
    Thanks

  • Web Application Transaction Monitoring Alerts with "wrong" Path

    Hello,
i have created some web transaction monitors, such as
http://foo.htm who is  hosted on the server foo123.cologne.org.
    It works.. but
we have also a mssql monitoring, the discovery of the mssql management pack discovers the reporting part of mssql server on our managementserver Operations12.cologne.org. So (it's right..) the server Operations12.cologne.org is a member of the SQL Instances;SQL
    Compontents;SQL Computers group.
When the web transaction monitor generates an alert, it have the pathname Operations12.cologne.org and not the pathname of the "right" server foo123.cologne.org.
For our mssql admins i have build an email-notification, when somethings going wrong at our sql servers (member of the SQL Instances;SQL Compontents;SQL Computers group) they received a mail.
The problem is, that they received a mail, when a web transaction monitor generated one, because the pathname is the name of our management server, because the management server is a member of thos sql server groups.
Someone have an idea to fix my "problem"?
    - Best way: changing the path names of the web transaction monitorings... but how? i can't find anything to change..
    Kind regards
    Wolfgang Winter

Thank you, it's a help to decide, what to do, so i have to solutions:
    - installing an agent to the web-appliction-hosting-server and configure it as a watcher node
(may be i will have problems with our firewall admins, because they have to allow the communications and.. when the hosting watcher is down, i have no alerts.. when i use more than one watcher nodes (good).. i have the wrong path names..
    - configure a part of our management server group without  SQL-Reporter Component as a watcher node
(more easy, because i have to tell my firewall admins: "the server foo456 is the standard watcher node"
Crazy.. because i don't know, how to assign the web transaction monitors to the "causing" server.., for mail notification and for our integration to HP Service Desk...

  • Monitor database connections in a database pool

    Hi,
Do you know how I can monitor database connections in a database pool.. ? I am using Jboss container.
The purpose is to monitor connections that are closed and refresh them.
    Thanks,

There a firewall.. across which my application makes connections to the database.. the firewall times out due to the inactivity. and my application dies.
I was thinking may be I could check for the database connections in a pool and then one that is not being used for a long time .. close it and again refresh the connection.

  • Manualy onfigure database with grid control

    Hi All,
I am using EM grid control 10g r4 to monitor many of the 9i and 10g databases in the environment.
    Need help in this scenario.
On a db server (10.2.0.2) I have grid control agent (10.2.0.4) installed and able to monitor databases on it.
Recently my colleague created a new database with ’local EM database control’ instead of using centralized grid control. In this case how can I manually configure this new database to point to EM grid control.
    Please let me know
    ~Thanks

You can attempt a rediscovery from within Grid Control.
On the server where you want to discover the target database set the ORACLE_HOME to the agent home and then execute:
    agentca -d
This should rediscover and find your database.

  • I can no longer load Google since I upgraded to the new version of fierfox & its definitely not anything to do with my firewall. How do I figure out what the problem is?

I upgraded to Firefox 4 and every time I try to open the home page with the Google search bar teh connection times out and its unable to connect. If I type any other address in the address bar it will open up the site, it's only Google it won't open. I've worked through every step on the Firefox support page and checked all my settings, run scans for malware, checked the firewall settings etc and even with my firewall, antivirus & spam filters all turned off I still can't open Google. I even uninstalled Firefox 4 and went back to version 3.6.16 but still have the same problem. Will I ever be able to Google again? Is there anything else I can try? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I started a thread in safari maverics, I ment to put it in iOS Safari.  New Thread lists all the steps I've taken.  No I haven't tried another browser.  I've only ever used Safari on my iDevices.

  • How to use your own database with your users to authenticate in a Web app?

    Hello, everybody!
I'm starting to write my first web application and I'm going to use JSF, JPA and EJB3 in this application. One of the first things that I have to do on it is the authentication part where I'll have a page with a user name and a password for the user to login. So, as I'm new to all this in Java (I've already implemented this on .NET in the past), I was studying the Java EE 5 Tutorial, especifically the section "Example: Using Form-Based Authentication with a JSP Page". But I saw that the users that the sample application uses come from the file realm on the Application Server. The users are created there and assigned a name, a password and a group. After the users are in the Application Server we can simply uses forms authentication declaratively in the deployment descriptor (web.xml).
But the problem is that this doesn't work to me as I already have my own database with my users, so I want to use it instead of having to create the users on the Application Server.
So, I'm asking you how to do that. Of course I'm not expecting that you place the code here to me as I know that such a thing could be complicated. Instead, I'm asking if you know about some tutorial, article, book or something that teaches how to do what I want. But I would like to see theses examples using JSF and/or EJB3 because these are the technologies that I'm using to develop. It's a pity that the Java EE 5 Tutorial doesn't have an example using a custom database as I know that this situation is very common in the majority of web sites.
    Thank you very much.
    Marcos

From memory, it goes like this... You just create a
raw jdbc connection on your user database using a
special "login" DB user account, which has
permissions only to an "authenticate" stored query,
which accepts two arguments: username & password, and
returns a boolean 0 or 1 rows found. When I implemented this in .NET's ASP.NET I had the same solution. I had an special user created in the database that I used to log in. When the real user entered his username and password I was already logged in and I had just to check his username and password agains the right table in my database.
But that was only possible bacause when I connected to the database using my hidden user, I used the rights APIs in ASP.NET that coordinate the authentication process. This means that before login in, no one could access any resources (pages, atc...). So what I'm saying is that I can't manager this manually in Java. Java has to have some API or whatever to allow me to control the login process programmatically, while letting the Application Server control the access to the resources.
