Kindly guide me how i can make this partition in my use.

I'm going to presume your disk is physically inside the computer.
(You didn't describe the system, nor where that drive was. In fact, you gave no usable hardware information.)
If you have ANYTHING in the computer that you would find painful to lose, such as another OS ...
If you have never installed Solaris before ...
... get a new disk drive and have that be the only disk in the computer.
Yes, that means actually spending money, but you will be happier with the results.
The Solaris installation process wil see your disk (or disks if you have more than one) and it will ask you where you want to install the OS. You will be presented with a number of opportunities to customize your choices. Solaris does not need third party utilities to prepare the hardware. So long as your components are known to be compatible, it wil "just work".
---> Just leave the space unconfigured. Let the installation process take care of it.
Learn by installing the OS.
Then re-install it immediately again with different defaults.
Then re-install it again, with yet a different set of settings.
Don't try to get fancy with multi-boot or alternate-boot lash-ups.
Keep everything simple and you will become competent at this.

How to search and mount partitions in solaris
Hi
I am new to Oracle solaris. I have a dual boot of windows S03 and solaris. I want to install Open Office which I downloaded and copied to D drive when I was in windows. Now how do I navigate to the D drive in solaris. When I select Places/Computer, I see CD drive and a folder named File System . I don't see any other drives.
I would like to know what is the GUI option to navigate to the drives. I remember, Ubuntu and Fedora do show the drives. Please help me
Regards
SrinivasDo you know if the Windows partition is NTFS or Fat32? If it's NTFS the only way you can see it is with additional third party software. If it's FAT32 or some type of FAT partition then you can mount it first and then it will show up under the GUI.
The easiest way to do it would be to burn it to dvd or copy it to usb and then use:
sudo /path/setup to install OO.

Currently I have three hard drives with:
Disk1: Solaris 10
Disk2: SXDE
Disk3: OpenSolaris (ZFS)
What is the proper way to mount Disk3 from Solaris 10 or SXDEHi
I think that the command that you need is 'zpool import' (on its own it will list pools that are available to import).
You may have problems if the version of ZFS on disk 3 is higher than the drivers on either Solaris 10 or SXDE (I recently tried importing an SXCE created ZFS partition into FreeBSD 7, but it failed for this reason).

Hi can anybody tell me if i can mount a NTFS partition under Solaris 10??
Thanks for ur help.<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>korsabad wrote on Wed, 11 January 2006 06:23</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
if you use solaris x86 and the ntfs-partition
Not possible. NTFS has those windows-security-id's (you know, those about-40-character-long-id's) for each object which cannot be read from solaris.
</td></tr></table>
I think writing to NTFS is nearly impossible (due to changes of the NTFS version, security stuff, and so on).
However reading from an <u>unencrypted</u> NTFS partition seems to be a possible thing. I do not know if a tool or a driver <u>already</u> exists but I think it is a possible task to write a tool that reads from NTFS partitions.
I think writing a tool that reads from UFS partitions under Windows is an easy task, too. I wrote such a tool for reading the EXT2 file system under Windows long time ago.

Error in mount FAT in Solaris 10 x86.
Hi all,
I did try mount an FAT partition in Solaris, but I receive an error, see:
# /usr/bin/prtpart /dev/rdsk/c1d0p0 -ldevs
Fdisk information for device /dev/rdsk/c1d0p0
** NOTE **
/dev/dsk/c1d0p0 - Physical device referring to entire physical disk
/dev/dsk/c1d0p1 - p4 - Physical devices referring to the 4 primary partitions
/dev/dsk/c1d0p5 ... - Virtual devices referring to logical partitions
Virtual device names can be used to access EXT2 and NTFS on logical partitions
/dev/dsk/c1d0p1 IFS: NTFS
/dev/dsk/c1d0p2 WIN95 Extended(LBA)
/dev/dsk/c1d0p5 IFS: NTFS
/dev/dsk/c1d0p6 IFS: NTFS
*/dev/dsk/c1d0p7 WIN95 FAT32(Upto 2047GB)*
in bold is the partition that I want mount.
dir that I want mount in:
# pwd
/mnt/windows
# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 /mnt/windows
mount: /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is already mounted or /mnt/windows is busy
/dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is not mounted, when I navigate to mnt/windows it is void..
what is wrong?
thanks to all...Well, you can't stand in the directory you are trying to mount, if you stand in '/mnt/windows' you will not be able to mount anything over it. (thats what 'busy' means in this context).
Basically your pwd can be anything except the mountpoint.
Hence, try a 'cd /' first, then try again.

How to create a separate /var partition on solaris non-global zone
Hi
I found no simple way to create a separate /var partition in solaris non-global zone.
I am using solaris 10 u9 and my root pool is zfs. My zone's zonepath is also separate zfs fs.
But, I do not know how to make the /var as a mountpoint of another zfs dataset since /var is not empty.
I also do not know if there is a way to install a zone with /var as a separate (outside '/') partition.
That will be really useful.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Edited by: vadud3 on Sep 20, 2010 12:16 PMI meant a separate zfs fs with mountpoint '/var' in a non-global zone.
I am insisting, because I do not want /var to fill up the '/' on non-global zone.
With default non-global zone installation, you cannot avoid that.
My zonepath itself is a zfs fs. I also have a zfs dataset provisioned to the non-global zone.
I cannot create a zfs fs out of that dataset and mount it as '/var' becasue by then non-global zone
already installed content on '/var'
I want the '/var' as a separate dir or mountpoint, the same reason global zone gives you that option during install.

Chown -R user hung on nfs4 mounted partition
Hi,
Using Solaris 10 on sparc. NFS v4 as server with default configuration on
Global zone and nfs4 client on 2 zones.
share -F nfs -o rw=server-t /nfs/shareddir
ls -ald /nfs/shareddir
drwxr-xr-x 2 104 staff 512 Jul 29 16:34 /nfs/shareddir and server-t is a zone .
on server-t (nfs client)
mount -F nfs <nfsserver>:/nfs/shareddir /usr/local/shareddir
ls -ald /usr/local/shareddir
drwxr-xr-x 2 user staff 512 Jul 29 16:34 /usr/local/shareddir
<user> is not created on nfs server so /nfs/shareddir is created such that
owned by UID 104 which is UID of user on client.
now problem is when a lot of directories were successfully created in
/usr/local/shareddir and following command is given on only 1 client, the
process was hung..
chown -R user /usr/local/shareddir/<somedir>
above command was hung for hours finally was killed. ( this directory
is actually shared between 2 NFS4 client on solaris 10 zones)
what could be reason and is there anything missing in the configuration
recommended for NFS4, on server and client /etc/default/nfs is untouched.
there are hugh number of directories and files of large size created on client side..where chown command was run(for same user which already owns that mounted partition)
Please let me know,
Thanks, jonnybarnes wrote:So this is partition sdb2, I have partition sdb1 mounted as /var, which is also weird because my system doesn't seem slow or sluggish, but I don't really know how often /var is read or written to. If I get a new SATA cable and attach the drive to a different port, it won't become like /dev/sdc will it and thus make my system complain about having no /var folder?
It might, but that's why you should always use persistent block device naming. With udev the device nodes for your partitions might also change after a reboot so you really shouldn't rely on them. -
Disk repair using the format - repair command with a mounted partition
I was going to repair some bad blocks on a disk by using the format command with the repair option. When I entered the block number to be fixed it came back withthe question of:
"Repair is in a mounted partition, continue?"
Will I hurt anything on my system if I answer yes to continue or should the partition be unmounted before I do this?
ThanksDid you have any answer?

Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.

1. check that it is ext4
2. if it is, man chmod and man chown
yes. i use chown xxx:xxx to solved problem.
NOOO! Never chown entire partitions!
If you would have read the mount man page you would have seen how you can mount partitions as rw for users
Here's what I use for vfat (usb stick)
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb vfat users,exec,dev,suid 0 1
I'm guessing you just need to add ext4 instead of vfat and it should work. You can mount without sudo and it'll be rw

Format - analyze - purge a disk with mounted partitions
I'm trying to format a machine with multiple disks. To do this, I've been instructed to run format, then analyze, then purge on each of the disks. Unfortunately, each disk has at least one mounted partition and when I try to run purge, I get the following message:
"Cannot do analysis on a mounted partition."
I've been able to get around this problem on all but one of the disks by using umount and making appropriate edits to /etc/cfstab. That said, I'm stuck on the first disk where mounts like / and /var exist. It's my understanding that you can't unmount / - if this is the case, how do I purge the disk where / is mounted?
Thanks,
DavidYou do realize the end result is that you will have no usable OS, right? If you do that's fine but I wanted to put that out there.
Reboot from install media and run the commands from there. They will be in the single user environment.
Cheers,

hi there
i have several partitions, windows, backups,etc...
i want to mount them! :-)
once i had one of my partitions to be mounted on startup by editing the fstab
then i added some other partition the same way , which worked fine, but then i get messages like "permission denied" as a normal user even if i want to browse the first partition i added which worked befor!
ok after trying and trying and geting more and more different error messages i added my partitions in fstab like the preconfigured floppy is in ;-)
(but with correct filesystems, not all vfat)
then i tryed following code with that customized fstab and with original fstab (addedlines=comments)
[matto@hansa matto]$ mount -t vfat /dev/discs/disc0/part8 /mnt/mukku
mount: only root can do that
[matto@hansa matto]$
now i think i have to give my user "matto" rights to mount partition
i also just used the option "user" in fstab and i get permission denied errors....
with option "defaults" its not getting better... but why? i can browse "/" to as user, ok not all subdirectories :-) but i am "on" "/"
i am really confused and frustrated now , because now i can't even reach my recordings partition which i could reach befor :-/
btw is there any good and easy to use multitrack recording software for linux?
greetings mattoAlternative is to use other tools for ntfs. Take a look at these threads:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=ntfs
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=ntfs
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=ntfs
but I have no idea if this works and if it's safe. It's much better option to use fat32 partition for windows-linux data exchange.
BTW if you use windows to create fat32 partitions it can create maximum 32gb fat32 partitions. You will have to create additional fat32 partitions if you have more space to share with linux (the funny thing is that windows says it can read/write to/from bigger fat32 partitions without a problem but it's just a limit on creation of such partitions :-)). -
Program to easily mount partitions
I am using Xfce, I am searching for an application that would let me mount partition easily without typing.
Something like when you start knoppix and you have all the icons of every partition on desktop. You only have to click to mount.
I don't want to edit fstab. Also I have many drives and change them frequently so using fstab file is a no way.
TIARox desktop will do this for you. That is one of the key things I use it for. I keep icons on my desktop for all my major disks and removable drives and so on. A single click on the drive icon will run the standard mount command, leveraging the information you must have previously entered into fstab. I have never found a way to make it execute customized mount commands, although there may be a way to do this - if anyone reading this knows, please add to this thread.
To try out rox, just download package "rox" from the Arch archives (pacman --sync rox) and try it out per:
rox --pinboard=default
This will give you an initially pretty bleak looking grey desktop with one folder on it called "home". If you right click that icon and select the Backdrop item, you can post a picture or pattern of your choosing to the desktop background. Looking better already, no?
Now for those disk icons you were looking for... Using that one single folder called Home, navigate over to your /mount directory. Drag and drop icons from there onto your desktop. Now you have icons for your drives of interest on the desktop. You can change the actual icon image easily via the "set icon" selection after you right click the icon. Here you will also see a mount command, although you won't need it.
Now, simply single click the desktop drive icon and voila! your drive is mounted. Unmounting takes two clicks - right click the icon and select the "unmount" option.
Rox remembers everything you have done (background image, icons, etc.) and will redraw your desktop just as you left it next time you start Rox. You can easily embed it into a startup mechanism to have it start automatically. If you are using XFCE4, the easiest way is to create a directory called ~/Desktop/Autostart, and in there, put a one line shell script that does the "rox --pinboard=default" command. By the way, you don't have to use the name "default". You can call your default desktop anything. Rox allows you to have multiple different desktops if you want. Being AR, I have named mine "xfce4-rox-desktop". Call yours whatever name appeals to you. I used "default" as a simple example.
Rox is enormously capable while being light and fast. You will be amazed if you spend some time with it, read the documentation on their web site and play around. Rox is great. I use the combo of XFCE4+Rox as a fully functional replacement for heavier window-manager/desktop combos like KDE or Gnome. No flames against either of those - I just wanted "faster and lighter".
Good look, and if you have further questions, don't hesitate to post.
