Mounting a (local) Directory as a Volume?

I am wondering how to best 'fool' the filesystemhandlers to do this:
I have several volumes that I ended up merging, and I was wondering if anyone would suggest a way to mount directories as logical volumes, to recover pointer information: Many programmes (such as iTunes, and some other critial programmes, such as my fontmanager) use *volume labels* as their pointers, that I do not want to fix in every instance (as thereare far too many), so for example, a directory that used to be at:
/Volumes/Disk1a1/data
..is now at:
/Volumes/Disk0a1/Disk1a1/data
I would like to do something clever, like making a symlink as such:
/Volumes/Disk1a1 (the symlink) pointing to /Volumes/Disk1a0/Disk1a1
...then edit /etc/fstab or whatever else I need to edit to make a mount point for the symlink, and mount it as a logical volume, using the symlink pointer in /Volumes to redirect to it.
Has anyone done this on OSX?
I know I can do it on Linux/Solaris, but OSX is a bit different in many ways: Most of what I have seen on the subject covers remote volumes via SMB, or similar, but this is a local device, and I want to mount directories on it as additional logical (local) volumes (e.g. virtual volumes) instead of partitioning the device.
I am also thinking of playing around with R/W DMGs and automounting those, if I have no other way. I'm wondering if this slows down anything, for as long as I use uncompressed DMG files, I'm not sure how much in terms of system resources is wasted by mounting (and accessing) them.
I have my reasons for doing this, including allowing mixed case-insensitive and CaSe-SenSitive volumes to coexist on the same volume without partitioning it, as it would allow me easy access to certain kinds of volumes that I do not often need, that I can mount via any source, including network mounts, external media mounts, etc..
Aye, I could repartition the device, and I will need to do this to fix the fact that I formatted it as CaSe-SenSitive, a format that Adobe never accepted. In an ideal world, my OS boot partition will be case-insensitive, my /Users directories CaSe-SenSitive, and my (previous) additional volumes merely local directories with a virtual mount point, or DMGs with a logical mount point.
The most critical part is if I can create mount points in fstab for directories via symlinks, or some similar method.
I also have some doubts about if Adobe SW will yammer at me if the /Users/username path is on a CaSe-SenSitive volume structure, or if it only matters that its main support frameworks and application datum are on a case-insensitive volume. Time shall tell me, either way. I would rather not need to modify every filename in the Adobe.pkg/Adobe.app files; and yes, other systems will be launching Adobe programmes via the server as a shared resource, or can run them via a VDT if the server CPUs and local resources (e.g. SAS 15K dswap rives) are desired for rendering operations. (Too bad there is no truly global 'fool all of Adobe CS3' fix for 10.5.x: Maybe one day I will write some scripts to do that, covering every CS3 component, instead of just the basic three...)
I appreciate any guiding hand in this matter... Thank you for reading.

  • Mounting a local directory in Forte 4.0 (Sun One?)

    Okay, I'm relatively new to Forte and am probably missing some detail that is quite stupid, but for some reason I can't mount a new local directory in Forte (on win98 system). I select "Mount", choose "local directory", but then no matter what directory I select the "Next" and "Finish" buttons remained grayed out so I can't get anywhere! It's not a big crisis, but a little annoying just the same. Can anyone out there tell me what I'm missing? Thanks.

  • Server 2003 to 2008 DCPromo fails - "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

    I've done the adprep32 on 2003 server standard for /forestprep, /domainprep, and /rodcprep without an error, as instructed by several docs on web.  But in final stage of dcpromo on 2008 server standard, it fails with
    Active Directory Domain Service could not replicate the directory partion CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=local from the remote Active Directory Domain Controller Old-DC.
    "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."
    I've found several docs online, but non-helped.  After about 20 hours of numbing fingers, I found docs to manually move DNS and DHCP from 2003 server to 2008 server.  But the Active Directory on 2008 server won't start because I can't get that
    DCPromo to finish.
    Is there a way to manually move the login ID's and passwords to 2008 server and activate the Active Directory Service?
    Thanks.

    I've already looked at it, and used it to google. Tried every suggestion I could find. Below is snippet of the file:

  • Mounting a local folder

    Using OS X 10.6.4, can I mount a local folder? Here's what I want to do. I have piece of software that I'm trying to install on my MacBook Pro. The software requires additional files. I have those files on in a folder on the MBP. The software prompts me to insert the cd with the files into the drive. The software will not allow me to browse to the local folder. The contents are 6.5 Gb. I'd rather not bother with having to burn all those files onto discs.
    So can is there a way I can just tell the OS to mount the folder so that (hopefully) the software reads it as a CD and will read the files from there?
    thnx in advance,
    --Joe

    You might try creating a .dmg disk image file from the folder:
    Disk Utility>File menu>New>Disk Image from folder
    Double-clicking the .dmg file would then mount it as a volume.
    It would probably take a while to create a 6.5GB disk image, but it would be faster than burning to optical media.

  • Mounting a bitwise backup of lvm2 volume

    i used dd to create an image of an unmounted lvm2 volume which is approximately 10G in size.  i had various reasons for doing this instead of snapshots (i needed the whole volume) or a file-based backup (i needed to do forensics on corrupted data).  however i am unable to mount this image using standard tools:
    $sudo losetup -d /dev/loop0
    $sudo losetup /dev/loop0 myimage
    $ sudo mount /dev/loop0 mymountpoint
    $EXT4-fs (loop0): bad geometry: block count 6553600 exceeds size of device (3184458 blocks)
    as you can see, the loop device was newly created on line 2 above and then i was told that this device, which was created using the given image file was too small for the image file (WTF?).  this is an image of an ext4 filesystem being mounted on a directory residing in another ext4 filesystem.
    TIA

    Still no answer? I do have the same trouble on my iMac G5 PPC with 10.5.8: I just replaced the MOB and Time Machine insists to create a new bkup! Attempted with "tmutil" command but doesn't work on my OS...it is really impossible to tell the machine to learn the new address? I DON'T want to believe it!
    Tks for any help

  • "There was an error opening this document. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is i

    "There was an error opening this document. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."
    I tried different versions, no avail.
    I think it has to do with the password somehow, but I do not know. I can copy the files from the web folder to my desktop and they open fine (after entering the password AGAIN), but I can not open them directly form the web folder - it does not ask for the password again, just pops up the error.
    Adobe's support really upset me (insert explicative here) by keeping me on the phone for 20 min, collecting all sorts of information about me (not the problem) with some lady who barely spoke English, just to tell me to go to the website. No surprise they need to charge for tech support, customer service is doing everything but "service". I hate companies that do this. I am thinking of using another PDF reader, I have heard good things about them. Check
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PDF_software
    Has anyone ever been able to find a fix? I can not find anything on this site.

    Howdy, Moritz!
    Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not an issue of filename and language conflicts, at least in my environment. I highly doubt that's the root cause of this issue.
    The PDF files in my tests have all had very simple names, such as 123.pdf and test.pdf, as well as more complicated names with spaces in them. Nothing about the files contains anything outside of the English language, including the content and filenames.
    From everything I've been able to determine, this is a WebDAV-related security issue that affects programs like Acrobat Reader. I know for a fact that MS's KB892211 WebDAV patch doesn't create the issue, however MS's update to that 892211 patch DOES create the issue. As I've outlined earlier in this thread, my extensive testing has proven this more than once.
    At this point, I haven't been able to accurately uninstall the update to 892211 after the update has been installed. And, as far as I can tell, the update to 892211 comes down from MS as a Office and/or Windows Update component. So, everyone has it, the uninstaller doesn't work, and there's no documentation detailing what registry entries are being changed when the update to 892211 is installed.
    My ultimate goal is to bring a test machine to the point just before the update to 892211 goes on, fire up the Registry, Process, and File monitors on my test box, and install the 892211 update. This should give me an accurate picture of what I need to restore in order to rid the machine of the update to 892211.
    Until Microsoft officially fixes the issue, I am not totally sure how this will be resolved. I've ceased my work on the issue for now since copying the PDF file from the WebDAV share to the user's desktop gets the user what they wanted in the first place - the ability to open the PDF file!
    Maybe, once some other projects slow down a bit, I might get back to creating a solution, but it's going to be a "hack" no matter which way you slice it. I'd much rather MS spend their time creating the solution. If I have to do it, my fee to MS will be quite HIGH! :*)

  • How can I schedule an export to excel format of an OBIEE Analysis or Dashboard to a local directory ?

    Hello,
    I would like to schedule with an agent some reports in OBIEE 11g that must be exported in excel format to a specific local directory.
    There is a need for a group of OBIEE users to have a set of reports ready (exported in .xlsx) every morning.
    Furthermore, if the previous scenario is possible then could I deliver a whole OBIEE Dashboard with the same way?
    Any input will be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
    As of now , we are not able to save the report in shared location in Linux /Unix.
    Windows it is possible.

  • How can i save the data from the Oracle database to my local directory

    How can i save the data from the Oracle database to my local directory instead Of saving the data file to the Directory created on the Oracle Server ?
    I require to design the Procedure which will pull the data from various tables and needs to store the data in the Client's local directory.

    Since SQL*PLUS runs on the client, you can use SQL*PLUS to spool data to your local drive.
    You could also use the database to write a a specified drive where all users have access to (mapped network drive, e.g.). I wouldn't recommend doing it that way, but it is sometimes useful when the files are created in some nightly batch run.

    Did you make sure your library (call it x) starts is named libx.so (atleast, on linux, possibly libx.dll on windows, not sure)? It will not load otherwise, and you must specify -agentlib:x (rather than saying libx.so). Yes, it is "funny" how it gives the same uninformative error message for a wide variety of errors. It will also give you this same error message if there are still unresolved symbols upon loading your library (which would be my second guess).

  • Moving Mail Users from a Local Directory to Open Directory

    Hi,
    We have been running a standalone mail server for a few years. We have recently upgraded to 10.5 for all of our servers. We have also been running an Open Directory server for the last year or so. Now I am trying to move my email users from the Local Directory on the Mail server to the LDAP server. Obviously we do not want to change account names, so I find I need to delete the local user and then enable the user through the LDAP. This works fine, but I need to bring the original IMAP files/folders forward.
    My question is what is the best practice? I thought backing up the Mail folder in each user's Library and reimporting it would work, but it won't take the IMAP mbox (I can see all the .emlx files in the backup of the user's Mail folder).
    So again, I had a user called user1 in my mail server Local directory say server1. I also have an Open Directory server2 with the same username on it. I have bound server1 to server2. I can see the server2 (OD) accounts on the server1 (mail). I then need to delete user1 from Local server1 directory in order to enable mail to user1 from the OD. This does work, but again, I need bring the mail files/folders to the new OD account on server1.
    thanks,
    mike

    Tony,
    Let me check of the migration manual, thank you!
    I really thought this was going to easier than this. The current accounts are IMAP, and therefore when I "hook up" the new OD account, which doesn't really need anything done on the client side because it is the same username and password and server as the current Local account. When it syncs, the old emails on the IMAP account in the user's Mail program clear since the new OD account is empty on the server.
    I just really thought duplicating the Mail folder in the client's home Library would allow me to import the emails back in. I have tried highlighting the mailboxes (Inbox, and personal folders), archiving them, and then reimporting seemed to work, but I need to beat it up before I start working on live accounts. One account I did try lets me read the emails from the user, but when I try dragging them to the IMAP folders from the import folder, I get a NULL character problem on IMAP append error. NOT to chase that, but it was something else that tripped me up.
    You do bring up a good point, I think the accounts were originally setup as POP and IMAP. I'll chase some ideas about that.
    Let me play around, you've been great considering my awful explanation of this different situation.
    thanks again,
    mike

    Hi,
    Did you talk about the Microsoft Azure Active Directory Sync tool ?
    If yes, this issue occurs if one or more of the following conditions are true:
    An object in the on-premises Active Directory has an SMTP address that's the same as the SMTP address of the object that's reporting the problem.
    An object in the on-premises Active Directory has a mail attribute that's identical to the object that's reporting the problem.
    An object already exists in your organizational account and has the same SMTP address or mail attribute as the object in the on-premises Active Directory

  • Help with utl_file (read/write file from local directory)

    Need help reading/writing file on local machine from plsql using 10.2 DB.
    I am trying to read/write a file from a local directory(laptop) without success.
    I have been able to read/write to the database server directory but can't write to directory on local machine.
    The utl_file_dir parm has been set to * and the db restarted but I can't get it to work... Here's the plsql statement.
    out_file := UTL_FILE.FOPEN ( 'C:\PLSQL', 'TEST.TXT', 'W' ,32767);
    Whenever I run it continues to write to c:\PLSQL dir on the database server. Have looked at the "Directory" object and created MY_DIR = C:\PLSQL but it writes to the db server.
    Running 10.2 on a remote windows server, running PLSQL using sql*navigator.
    Thanks in advance for your help..

    I don't see how you expect the server to be able to see your laptop across the network, hack into it and start writing files. Even if it could, what if there is more than one laptop with a C: drive? How would it know which one to write to?
    Is there a shared drive on the server you can access via the laptop?

  • How to determine the mount point for directory /tmp ?

    Folks,
    Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
    I am installing Grid infrastructure. I am on step 7 of 10 (verify Grid installation enviroment) and get this error:
    "Free Space: Rac2: /tmp"
    Cause: Could not determine mount point for location specified.
    Action: Ensure location specified is available.
    Expected value: n/a
    Actual value: n/a
    I have checked the free space using the command:
    [root@Rac2 /]# df -k /tmp
    Output:
    Filesystem     1k-blocks     used     Available     Use%     Mounted on
    /dev/sda1     30470144     7826952     21070432     28%     /
    As you see above, the free space is enough, but could not determine mount point for /tmp.
    Do any folk understand how to determine the mount point for directory /tmp ?
    Thanks.

    I have just checked "/home/oracle/.bash_profile". But in my computer, there is no "oracle" under /home directory.Is this your first time Linux and Oracle installation? I had a brief look at your referenced link. The reason why you do not find a "oracle" user is because the instructions use "ora11g" instead, which, btw, is not standard. The directories of your installation and your installation source can be somewhat different from known standards and you will have to adjust it to your system.
    My best guess is that you have either missed something in the instructions or you need to ask the author of the blog what is wrong. The chance to find someone here who has experience with these custom instructions is probably unlikely.
    I suggest you try to locate the cluster verification tool, which should be in the bin directory of your grid installation. Alternatively you might want to check the RAC, ASM & Clusterware Installation forum: RAC, ASM & Clusterware Installation

  • How to select variable filename from local directory with fn to load xml

    I would like to select a specific xml file to load from a local directory. The file name is composed of “Title” + “number sequence”.  I know the Title (in this case its XLink07), but I need to select the latest number sequence or the latest by date stamp.
    For example, the local directory has the following files:
    XLink01[36735298100].xml
    XLink02[36735298100].xml
    XLink02[36735298101].xml
    XLink07[36735298100].xml
    XLink07[36735298101].xml
    In this example I need to select file XLink07[XXXXXXXXXXX].xml where XXXXXXXXXXX is the highest number within the XLink07[XXXXXXXXXXX].xml files.  Title is Xlink07 and function should return Number sequence [36735298101]. Files with higher number sequence have later date stamps than files with lower number sequences. I need to select the highest number or the latest date stamp for the file that begins with XLink07….
    My action script to load the local .xml file without any function to select the correct file is:
    Security.allowDomain("*", "*")
    var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    xmlLoader.load(new URLRequest("XLink07[36735298101].xml"));
    xmlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, showXML);
    function showXML(e:Event):void {
    XML.ignoreWhitespace = true;
    var Innards:XML = new XML(e.target.data);
    tweet_name.text = Innards.XLink01[0].screen_name;
    tweet_1.text = Innards.XLink01[0].text;
    tweet_date.text = Innards.XLink01[0].created_at;
    Thanks for the help if anyone can script that function for me if its possible.

  • Error: filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect

    Using Acrobat Pro 8.1.3. and Flash CS3 ... Have a link on Flash site to a PDF file for people to print/download sheet ... When link is clicked, Acrobat opens and display the error message : "there was an error opening this document. The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect" ...
    Needless to say, all of these things are FINE with NO error whatsoever.
    I know it's not Flash, the link itself works. Computer crashed 2 weeks ago, had to reinstall everything, including Acrobat Pro, and redownload updates ... All was working fine B4 crash (including link from flash and opening of linked files with Acrobat), not anymore since reinstall ... Wondering if some update/patch is messing it up ... Help anybody? Thanks a lot!

    How do your users generate the link? Windows makes it surprisingly difficult to reference a file. I usually resort to 3rd party tools that allow me to copy a file name or path.
    Much to my surprise, I find that if I use '''Insert|Link''' and ''browse'' to the required file, it generates a fully qualified URI and it works correctly when sent and received in Thunderbird. That's TB31.5.0 on Windows 7 Pro. So the transmitted URI will have this format:
    <code>
    file:///F:/projects/xyz/xyz%20Project%20Spend%20Production%205%20off.xls
    </code>
    It won't work if you just drop in a plain old DOS type filename.
    Yes, it's a chore to browse to the required file when you have it in plain sight in front of you in your file manager. I'm using FreeCommander XE which is able to generate properly formed pathnames and copy them to the system clipboard, and these can be pasted as-is into message body, or pasted into the address box in the Insert|Link dialogue.
