Movieclip link to new webpage

Question

I want to have a movieclip "button" that when clicked will go to another page on a website, a different URL, not another frame in the flash application. I am trying to use this actionscript

procedures_mc.p_dropdown_mc.p_body_mc.newPage = "update0709.html";
procedures_mc.p_dropdown_mc.p_body_mc.buttonMode = true;
procedures_mc.p_dropdown_mc.p_body_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goToPage);
function goToPage(e:MouseEvent):void
   targetPage = (e.currentTarget.newPage);
      navigateToURL(targetPage);
I get this error when I run it
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "update0709.html" to flash.net.URLRequest.
at header03_fla::MainTimeline/goToPage()
I want the new page to open in the current browser window and not to open a new browser.

You have targetPage as a URLRequest, and that is correct, but you reassign it in the functon - that is not correct...
var targetPage:URLRequest = new URLRequest("update0709-2.html");  //CORRECT
procedures_mc.p_dropdown_mc.p_body_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goToPage);
function goToPage(e:MouseEvent):void
   targetPage = (e.currentTarget.newPage); //NOT CORRECT
   navigateToURL(targetPage, "_self");
If you want to get some string newPage from the clicked clip then you will need to do a new URLRequest with it... and there's no reason to wrap that in parenthesis.

    navigateToURL(targetPage, "_self");
