Moving ASM disks from Host to Host

Hello all,
should anyone have tried this or should anyone be able to point ou some sort of documentation for this issue would greatly be appreciated;
I have two hosts that have an Oracle Database resident on filesystem that is storage replicated from between to disk groups and that on the destination the control file is used to "import" the new database.
My issue would be if anyone has tired the same with ASM and if would it be possible to have a certain scenario;
Shutdown database on source,
Replicate the disks via Storage,
Scan for the disks on the destination
<Tweak the disks so that they can be imported ?>
Import the disks to the ASM Instance
Fire up the database on destination
If anyone has some usefull insight would be most apreciated.

Francisco

Hi,
at the bottom of my last post, I did point you to some whitepapers on the ASM side, identifying what needs to be done in case of an ASM diskgroup.
So yes this will work with ASM, you simply have to mirror the whole luns and this should work.
However regarding the other points:
=> Replicating via. Oracle is definitely faster than storage. Just think of it: Oracle only needs to forward the changed of a block (never the whole block) with the help of the redologs, whereas Storage mirroring always has to take the whole block (+Redologs). So this is roughly double the data needed to be transferred than Oracle. Additionally blocks which Oracle does not need to forward (like ASM header/tablespace header information). Hence if you say it is slower, this cannot physically be the case. Only exception is if your infrastructure for network is not configured the same as the storage network is (or you have an error in setup).
=> DR with Oracle Dataguard is way below 5 Minutes if you configure it correctly. If you setup ASM mirroring between both nodes and setup a cluster than you have no downtime at all.
=> For the last point look at Snapshot Standby. This is exactly what they need + it provides DR all the time.

  • Moving ASM disks from one datacenter to another to different machine

    Environment: 4 node RAC
    Version: 11.1.0.7
    Storage : ASM (Oracle ASM library)
    DB size : 3TB
    We need to move the database to another data center to high power servers(more cpu & ram & different brand).
    if we shutdown the db and Disks are moved from data center A to B. can we easily mount these diskgroups on servers in Data center in B?
    I guess this is possible....so after Disks are moved to data center B. From oracle perspective, just need to ADD diskgroup name in ASM_DISK_GROUPS parameter and mount it?

    user8860934 wrote:
    if we shutdown the db and Disks are moved from data center A to B. can we easily mount these diskgroups on servers in Data center in B?ASM labels are written on the disks itself. If all the disks in an ASM diskgroup are intact, and is compatible version wise with that ASM instance, then that instance can mount the diskgroup.
    I guess this is possible....so after Disks are moved to data center B. From oracle perspective, just need to ADD diskgroup name in ASM_DISK_GROUPS parameter and mount it?Yes. Also assuming that on the physical o/s side, ASM has the required access to these disks.
    Be careful of how the disks are moved though. If those disks are "touched inappropriately" by the storage admins when zoning/LUN masking/whatever them, they will corrupt data on it - and ASM will be unable to use these disks.

  • Migrating ASM disk from singlepath to multipath

    Hi,
    I need to migrate the single path for the SAN disks to a multipath access mode.
    Here is my environment :
    Oracle DB : 11gR2 Enterprise version (2 Node RAC)
    OS : Oracle Enterprise Linux 5
    DB file system : ASM disks with ASMLib
    disk used : SAN disk
    Multipath software : EMC Powerpath
    single path names are : /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, .. etc.
    Multipath Name would be : /dev/emcpowera, /dev/emcpowerb etc.
    From different metalink document and google, I came up with the following steps for migrating the ASM disks from singlepath to multipath :
    (** Perform the below steps on both the nodes)
    1.     Open ASMLIB configuration file: /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm (Backup this file at this point)
    3.     Edit the variable ORACLEASM_SCANORDER to provide the prefix path of the multipath disk.
    For example:
    The multipath disk name would be /dev/emcpowera, /dev/emcpowerb etc. (Since we are using emc powerpath), set the ORACLEASM_SCANORDER variable as follows:
    ORACLEASM_SCANORDER="emcpower"
    4.     Edit the variable ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE to exclude the single disks (/dev/sd*) from scan process.
    ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE=”sd”
    5.     Reboot both the nodes.
    Are the above steps fine? Any addition/ modification needed ? Please advise.
    Raised an SR for this, but did not get a direct answer.
    Also. Do I need to set the ASM_DISKSTRING parameter to any specific value for my ASM instance? It is currently set to NULL.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    no actually that's all there is to it.
    Since you use ASMLIB, the disks will be presented the same to ASM. So there is no need to change the DISCOVERY_STRING.
    Only thing I personally would do (for testing purposes) is the following:
    1.) Check before migrating that all disks are there (oracleasm listdisks), then
    2.) Disable the automatic startup of the crs stack (crsctl disable crs), that you can test everything (including reboot) without having the clustarstack start automatically.
    3.) If after the reboot the oracleasm listdisks sees all disks you are fine
    4.) Enable crs again (crsctl enable crs) and start the clusterstack (crsctl start crs).

  • Moving TM disk from Network to USB: cannot see previous backups

    Hi,
    I have decided to move my external USB disk from the Airport Extreme USB port to my computer USB port to speed up backups and restores.
    Unfortunately it seems that I cannot see anymore previous backups in the disk using TM.
    The disk was accessed through the network and it was setup to have user level access to it: each user have his folder on the disk.
    So, what I have done is to move back the disk to my computer, I have run disk utility to check and fix the disk since when the drive is attached to the AE with user privileges, it will report errors once you connect back to the computer. Once that permission errors were addressed, I have moved the time machine backup to the disk root and I have told TM to use this new disk as backup location.
    Then I have made a new backup to the disk and it seems that TM was able to detect the previous backups because it has added only few GB to the backup.
    Then I have moved to a random folder were I have made changes, and I have started TM: when I do that, TM window will switch me back to "MyComputer" where I can see all drives.
    I can move around but I am unable to move back in time, like there are no other backups.
    TM backup file is about 140 GB and I can fully access it by using finder: I see that all previous data is there, but TM cannot see it.
    I have not changed computer name,
    I have tried to use the TM option to "open other TM disks" but It doesn't show any other disk in the select window.
    Does anybody know what is happening and how I can try to fix?
    thanks!

    Thanks for the replies,
    I would like to move from a wired network TM backup to a local firewire/USB backup.
    So the first error I have made is to have deleted the user directory in the Airport Extreme external USB disk: I have moved the TM sparse bundle file to the new location but I didn't noticed that other hidden files were there.
    Second, I was unable to browse the older TM backups using TM and it seems that I cannot "browse other TM backups" using such TM option because the window were not showing me any drive.
    I have then realized that I have to mount the sparse bundle to see it in such TM option: then it seems to work perfectly.
    So there is no need for me to find a solution to use again the same backup with the local disk: if I need something in future I will use the TM option to browse other backups and I think I will be able to recover any file from there. May be I cannot recover mails in this way.
    I think it is also possible to fix by using the procedure listed in the previous link: I didn't try just because I don't want to spend more time on this issue and because I have not enough free space on other drives... but...
    ...it should be enought to:
    1- connect a new drive to the computer;
    2- mount the old TM sparse bundle image;
    3- use SuperDuper to copy all contents of mounted sparse bundle image into the new attached drive;
    contents of the sparse bundle image seems to be equal to the structure and names used by a new fresh backup on a local USB disk, so I suppose that it could work... if someone wants to try a tell if it is so... thanks!

  • Moving Hard Disk From one Mac to Another

    I am thinking of buying a new macbook. I have the C2D 2.16 Ghz right now. So if I would buy, lets say the new 2.4 Ghz model, could I just take the hard disk from the one I use now and put it into to the new Macbook?
    Would it boot up?
    Thanks!

    As i understand you already have a MacBook and your thinking of buying a new one, to witch you want to have all your present data.
    Instead of removing the physical HD from one and reseating it in another you cloud try one of these options out:
    1.
    If you have 10.5 on your present MacBook you might think of using TimeMachine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
    -great feature restores your whole system as you see it
    2.
    You have a utility called Migration Assistant, you´ll find this in Applications>Utility folder:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554?viewlocale=en_US
    3.
    Use a firewire cable to transfere the information you need.
    Best of luck.

  • Moving TM disk from wired to wireless

    Can you do an initial backup onto an external disk via firewire (from a MacBook) and then plug the disk into airport extreme to subsequent wireless backups?
    thanks!

    sherthang,
    The short answer is "no." Time Machine uses a different method to store the backup(s) when they are network-connected, making the two incompatible.
    Now, I have seen anecdotal evidence that Time Machine can be "spoofed" a bit in order to get the job done. It involves beginning with a new Time Machine backup over the network, then interrupting the backup to switch to a "wired" connection. You would then complete the initial backup while wired, and finally move the backup drive to its network location for future (smaller) backups.
    I haven't tried this myself, but I have seen reports that it works. I don't have much faith in Time Machine's ability to re-start an interrupted initial backup, but any problems I had in this regard were from the initial release of Leopard (with no updates). Time Machine has had several fixes since then, and as I say, I have seen reports that this method works.

  • MD3000 - Change Access From Host to Host-Group

    I've got a Hyper-V partition on an MD3000 called "HyperV-CSV".
    At present, in the "Host-to-Virtual Disk Mappings" it is only accessible by "Host HyperV1".
    I'm trying to allow host HyperV2 access as well, and without causing problems.  What I have done is created a Host Group called "HyperV-Group" where both HyperV1 and HyperV2 are members.
    So what I think I need to do is change the access of the Virtual Disk from "Host HyperV1" to "Host Group HyperV-Group".
    My questions though - will this disconnect the disk from HyperV1 briefly while making the change? Will this properly allow both HyperV1 and HyperV2 to access this virtual disk?
    This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Hi AlexMtl,
    It seems the host accesses internet via wifi ,right ?
    The host still can access internet after removing bridge connection then reboot , right ?
    If it is the case , please refer to following setps :
    1. remove bridge from wifi then reboot it to ensure host can access internet
    2. create a new internal virtual switch
    3. share wifi connection  to the new Vswitch (right click wifi connection --> properties --> sharing --> check "allow another network ..."  and select the new internal Vswitch in the drop list)
    4. configure an IP for the new Vswitch same subnet as VM's IP
    5. configure VM's gateway same as the IP of new Vswitch (also configure the DNS server IP for VMs)
    Hope this helps

  • Asm disk on NFS/NAS in linux

    Hi,
    Currently i am having one diskgroup of 1.5TB on SAN in linux. Now there is a requirement to increase the space in the server and the space can only be added from NFS/NAS drive. I am planning to create asm disks using 'dd' command.
    I have below queries:
    1. Is it feasbile to keep the asm disk from both SAN & NAS drives.
    2. asm_diskstring parameter is not set as we are using multipath and created raw devices then how to set the parameter to detect the asmdisks.
    3. Can any one suggest me the size of one disk on NAS in linux.
    4. I tried with losetup and with this i can create upto 8 disks. If i create disk of 250GB using 'dd' command then is there any risk?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,

    I won't mix SAN and NAS disks in the same ASM disk group. Also keep in mind that NAS now introduces a whole new set of underlying dependencies that need to be satisfied in order for ASM to mount those disks and the database instance to use it. Not exactly the best of ideas for a robust system where keeping the number of moving parts to a minimum is required.
    IP is also a horribly slow medium to use for a storage protocol. It can have a significant negative performance impact.

    How i could resize asm disk from 450 G for example to 100 Gb for my new rac installation?
    Sorry for my english:(

    Hi mmusette, hi all,
    please, allow a little clarification. ASM allows resizing disks:
    From: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/storeman.htm#sthref1727
    Resizing Disks in Disk Groups+
    The RESIZE clause of ALTER DISKGROUP enables you to perform the following operations:
    Resize all disks in the disk group
    Resize specific disks
    Resize all of the disks in a specified failure group
    If you do not specify a new size in the SIZE clause then ASM uses the size of the disk as returned by the operating system. This could be a means of recovering disk space when you had previously restricted the size of the disk by specifying a size smaller than disk capacity.
    The new size is written to the ASM disk header record and if the size of the disk is increasing, then the new space is immediately available for allocation. If the size is decreasing, rebalancing must relocate file extents beyond the new size limit to available space below the limit. If the rebalance operation can successfully relocate all extents, then the new size is made permanent, otherwise the rebalance fails.
    However, if you have setup the ASM disk on a physical disk partition, you probably will not be able to resize the partition without destroying the data on the disk. If you, however, used a volume manager to create volumes and you based your ASM disks on those volumes (through RAW devices or directly) AND your volume manager allows resizing the volumes, you should be able to make use of the command mentioned above.
    Thanks,
    Markus

    Hello Harish,
    I don't think that there is issue of discovery string as I can see list of all disks path for ASM, but couldn't include(checked) listed disks for new ASM disk group. I couldn't see any option to trace for OUI while providing configuration for setup, it may trace the information when it starts installation. Please, correct me if I am wrong.
    Configuration of /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm is as follows:
    ORACLEASM_ENABLED=true
    ORACLEASM_UID=oracle
    ORACLEASM_GID=oinstall
    ORACLEASM_SCANBOOT=true
    ORACLEASM_SCANORDER=""
    ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE=""
    How scan order can resut such a issue during installation? I couldn't understand.
    Anyway, I did modification in /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm as you have suggested, then reinitiated installation process after system reboot, modified parameters are listed below for your reference:
    ORACLEASM_SCANORDER="emcpower sd"
    ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE="sda sdb sdc sdd sde sdf sdg"
    BUT COULDN'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE.

    Hello All,
    we have created shared folder on multiple client machine in domain environment on different 2 OS like-XP,Vista, etc.
    from some day's When we facing problem when we are access from host name that shared folder is accessible but same time same computer when we are trying to access the share folder with IP it asking for credentials i have type again and again
    correct credential but unable to access that. If i re-share the folder then we are access it but when we are restarted the system then same problem is occurring.
    I have checked IP,DNS,Gateway and more each & everything is well.
    Pls suggest us.
    Pankaj Kumar

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that the same shared folder can be accessed by name, but can’t be accessed be IP address and asks for credentials.
    Please try to enable the option below on the device which has shared folder:
    Besides, check the Advanced Shring settings of shared folder and confrim that if there is any limitation settings.
    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

  • How to store data from Host.vi in cRIO-9074

    TejasKumar Patel
    I implemented a advance Measurement and Control system using cRIO-9074
    with c-Series I/O cards( NI 9217, 9411, 9264)
    I have some questions about it,
    (1)- Data rate from FPGA targate to host vi is too low. how can I increase
    it, when I run my host VI, sometimes all temperature sensor update at
    same time and sometimes one by one, can you please give me some hint, how
    can I correct it, I used two FIFOs for NI-9411 digital pulses, I put all
    Digital input and all analog output and input in a seperate while loop in
    FPGA targate VI.
    (2)- I have to write that data to analyse for further result. I tried all
    possible way to write data including wite to spreadsheet.vi, write to
    text.vi, Data storage.vi, Write to measurement.vi. All this VI work
    efficientlywhen it run individualy, But when I connect this VI to
    writedata from FPGA host VI. than it always give empty file.
    I saw your post in NI discussion forum about how to write data from
    Host.vi, But still I am confuse that how can I creat a protocol between
    host VI and Fpga target vi. to write the data in a file. I have nearabout
    38 channel to write data.
    (3)- I have to measure time difference between two digital pulses, to find
    a flow rate. I am using counter for it with risisng edge shot.vi, but when
    i get a timestemp when there is risisng edge for the second rising edge
    how can I get timestemp. Its like i have to measure time between two
    pulses, I triend waveform measurement.vi to find cycle period. but it not
    worked. any other was to measure it.
    I am stuck in this question since from last one month. I already followed
    NI-discussion forum solution but it doesnt work. I think the way I applied
    is may be wrong.
    Looking forward to hear from you soon.
    Plese send an additional email copy to [email protected]
    Thank you and Best Regards,

    Thanks Joseph for your support,
    1-      If I count the ticks between the pulses it always seems different ….because this method I already tried, but it does not work,  like some times it shows 9099 tick and at the second pulse it shows like some more or less ticks not the same ticks every time. To complete my project, the biggest problem is the data storage.
    2-      As you gives the solution in NI forum, “low level file I/O Vis such as Write to text file” FPGA target not support this VI. And mainly I want to write data from HOST.vi, because I am process those data …and I need to store it. For to figure out my result.
    3-      If I use “Write to text file. VI (Sub-VI ) to FPGA.vi, it not support because it support string data and I have FIXpoint data. And can you explain me what is low level file IO, and how can I use in fpga.vi??
    4-      Yes, for my project time stamp it really necessary, for data analysis.
    5-      I need the time stamp to find out what was the system response at the time.  As our project based on weather temperature, I need time stamp.
    Waiting for your reply,
    Thanks and Regards,
    Patel

  • How to find out the memory status of RT PXI controller from host?

    I want to find/read the memory status of the RT controller from host programmatically. Can any one have any idea about it? If yes can please share your valuable suggestion.

    Hello Vijay,
    Check out the attached example, it monitors the CPU usage as well as the memory usage. You will need to install our STM component that you can download here:
