Moving from SQL server 2005 to SQL server 2008 ... for a MS/SQL newbie.

Hello,
I am in charge of moving an existing SAP NW BI (SPS20) from a MS SQL Server 2005 database on Windows Server 2003 (x864/64 bit) Platform to a MS SQL Server 2008 database/Windows Server 2008 Platform (x64/64 bit).
The SID of the SAP system will remain the same.
The thing is  that I have always worrked so far on Oracle/Unix environements, windows/MSSQL is an entire new world for me,
so I am quite worried.
I  have read many sap notes/installation guides/forum posts regarding this operation, I will describe here my understanding
of the techinical operations that I will need to perfrom.
Could you correct me if I am wrong, as well as give me your comments ?
1/ I will need to perform an SQL server database copy within a homogeneous system copy.
2/First ,I'll have to install on the target environnement the SQL server 2008 database. I'll have to install the SQL Server Database Software with SQL4SAP (no need to install the database server software manually, right ?). Afterwards, I'll install on the target environnent, SAP Netweaver 7.0 SR3 with a modified Instalaltion Master DVD.
3/ On the source environement, I'll perfrom a database backup of the SQL Server 2005 system and restore the database on the target environement. since I choose to perfrom a restore of the database , there is no need to follow all the steps described in sap note 151603 :determine the file structure of the source database, create the directory structure for the target database, etc ...
4/ Once the restoration is finished, I use SAPINST and finish the homogeneous copy :  >additional sofware->system copy>target system->central system --> Based on AS Abap --central installation
Your comments are welcome.
Thank you for your attention
Best Regards.
Raoul

Hi Raoul,
you also need a modified Kernel DVD for the installation on SQL 2008 (see SAP Note 1152240).
And don't forget to install and patch the Visual Studio c++ Runtime (also described in that note).
I also would recommend to restore the backup and then install SAP NW 7.0 SR3 and use the restored SQL 2008 database.
So the basic steps are:
1. Perform backup and restore to SQL 2008
1.1 Install SQL 2008 with SQL4SAP
1.2 Backup old database
1.3. Restore backup on SQL 2008
2. Install VC runtime on Win 2008
3. Create modified Kernel DVD
4. Create modified Master DVD
5. Perform system copy target installaton with - additional sofware->system copy>target system--->central system --> Based on AS Abap --central installation and use the SQL 2008 database
You could also use SQL Server 2008 R2 which was release last month.
Please also check Note 1476928

You should really consider doing the load using a data load rule. If that isn't the problem, it may be that you are having a real performance problem. If you are moving enough data to require a half hour load, it should be probably be loaded from a text file, or even a spreadsheet, using a data load rule. Text file loads are a bit better than excel, especially when there are formatting issues. <BR><BR>Lock and sends are fine for changing parameters and doing adjustments, but heavy duty data loads really work a lot better with load rules.

  • How to enable high availability on SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2

    Dear Folks,
    I would like to ask you about this thing. I'm working for IT department for bank in Myanmar. Our bank have up to 96 branches across all of Myanmar including H.O. We are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 for our banking
    information system. My main problem is having to backup and restore the database backup files every time the servers in branches goes down for whatever reasons. I want to deploy this feature of high availability and failover cluster using Windows Server 2008
    and SQL Server 2005. Our branches have 2 Servers. One is for Primary and other is for Backup. What I want to do is that, I want to change Backup Server to Primary Server whenever the Primary Server goes down for whatever reasons. All the working data and databases
    from Primary will immediately replicated into Backup Server along with all the IP information of Primary Server. Please give me step by step guide for this process.

    Try below

    I will recommend you to upgrade SQL server to newer version for support as well as flexibility.

  • Importing Data from MS Access into SQL Serevr 2005 via Linked Server: User-Dependent failure

    I am operating an Express version of SQL Server 2005 on a Windows XP machine.
    I have successfully setup a linked server to a remote Access (.mdb) database. With my user account (Windows authentication) I can retrieve and store data without any problem.
    I have another user (apparently with same settings as my own account) that is always failing to get the data.
    The Error message he gets is:
    OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "TSU_Tmp" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\DSITSO-NT0001\Exchange\Database5.mdb'.  It is already opened exclusively by another
    user, or you need permission to view its data.".
    Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "TSU_Tmp".
    Here below the code used to set up the linked server (coming from the Code Snippets of SQL Server 2005).
    EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
    @server = N'TSU_Tmp',
    @provider = N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
    @srvproduct = N'OLE DB Provider for Jet',
    @datasrc = N'\\DSITSO-NT0001\Exchange\Database5.mdb'
    EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
    @rmtsrvname = N'TSU_Tmp',
    @useself = N'TRUE',
    @locallogin = NULL,
    @rmtuser = N'Admin',
    @rmtpassword = NULL
    We both run the script, actually is a Stored Procedure, (see code below) on the same XP machine where SQL Server is running.
    EXEC('INSERT INTO tblFcst
    (StartBUCode, StartBUType, StartBUSeq, StartTrz, StartCty,
    EndBUCode, EndBUType, EndBUSeq, EndTrz, EndCty,
    FcstCreationPeriod, FcstValidForPeriod, Fcst, FcstExternalReference,
    IsProcessed, IsSolved)
    SELECT TSU.BUCodeSend, TSU.BUTypeSend, TSU.BuaNoSend, Null AS StartTrz, Null AS StartCty,
    TSU.BUCodeRcv, TSU.BUTypeRcv, TSU.BuaNoRcv, Null AS EndTrz, Null AS EndCty,
    TSU.[Current week], TSU.[Forecast for week], TSU.[Volume trp m3], TSU.[TSU_ID (Don''t touch me)],
    0 AS IsProcessed, 0 AS IsSolved
    FROM TSU_Tmp...tbl_TSU_trpm3 AS TSU;')
    PS: it is run using an 'EXEC(String)' format as at compile time of Store Procedure the Linked Server is not existing and otherwise compile would fail.
    We tried it with different files, in different locations. It always wors for me, never for him...
    The files were not used by anyone else. The folder(s) where they were stored are open to "Everyone".
    So I concluded it should be something linked to the User... :) But I really do not know what, as said apparently we have exactely the same setup in our Login profiles.
    Any idea or suggestion is welcome.
    Thanks
    Luca

    Hi Luca Lentati,
    According to your description and T-SQL statement, we need to verify if the download and install the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 as a provider.
     If the 64bit SQL Server is running on the server,  The error, the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 is not support, I reommend you download and install the Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 as a provider.
    The error 7303 message indicates that the linked server does not have correct login mapping. You can execute the sp_helplinkedsrvlogin stored procedure to set the login information correctly. Also, verify that you have specified the correct parameters
    for the linked server configuration.
    In addition, if the issue still exists, I recommend you copy the access file to local Server, and create linked server between them , check if it can run well. If yes, it means that
     the account which SQL server uses to run the service does not have read/write access to that file share.
    There is an article about configuring a Linked Microsoft Access Server on SQL 2005 Server , you can review the following article.
    http://www.aspfree.com/c/a/Microsoft-Access/Configuring-a-Linked-Microsoft-Access-Server-on-SQL-2005-Server/

  • SQL Server 2005 64BIT Linked Server Cannot fetch a row using a bookmark

    We get the following error SOMETIMES when trying to delete a row from an Oracle 10g database table via the SQL 2005 64BIT linked server.
    DELETE [edwdev]..SYSTEM.SAIC_ARTIFACT_LOG FROM tblArtifactLog src WHERE src.source_seq_no = SAIC_ARTIFACT_LOG.art_seq_no and src.source_name = 'edwdev' [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Cannot fetch a row using a bookmark from OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "edwdev". [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7333). The step failed.
    They keyword here is SOMETIMES. The job would fail 100% of the time before applying ODAC 10.2.0.3.0, after the ODAC install the job fails about 40% of the time. We have this setup in a test enviornment and yes there are rows of data in the table everytime the job runs.
    As far as the OraOLEDB10.dll install we have a date of 2/20/07 but a version of 10.2.0.2. I am wondering if this shouldn't be a new version.

    LearnMoreAgile wrote:
    so does that mean no one at oracle can guide me in this issue before i goto microsoft ?How has the Linked Server been created in MSSQL? OraOLEDb.Oracle is the class name for the Oracle OLEDB provider which should appear in your list of OLEDB providers in your favourite windows dev tool or when creating the linked server. If it doesn't appear likely you didn't choose to install it. I don't know if it's a default install with the 64bit client, but the ODAC client contains the .net provider and not the OLEDB provider.

  • MSS SQL Server 2005 - Partitioning - Review Note 869407 for Status

    I was reviewing OSS Notes today in preparation for applying BW 3.5 Support Stacks 16 - 18 and stumbled on this note regarding partitioning on SQL Server.  Thought I'd share it.  Read the full note if partitioning on SQL Server is something you want.
    <a href="https://websmp230.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=869407&nlang=&smpsrv=">Note 869407 - Partitioning on MS SQL Server 2005</a>
    MS SQL Server 2005 partitioning in BW 3.5 (NW04) and 7.0 (NW04s).
    This note is only valid for MS SQL Server 2005 pilot customers.
    If you implement this note on your MS SQL Server 2005 you should first contact SAP because partitioning on MS SQL Server 2005 is still in a partitioning pilot phase .
    The current pilot phase for SQL 2005 table partitioning was extended and will end approx mid/end of 2006 although SQL 2005 is already available.

    First of all please be aware HSODBC has been desupported since 15th of March 2008. When starting a new project you should start with a supported product and this product is called DG4ODBC and it is available as release 11.
    Looking at the provided listener it shows several configurations issues.
    Have a lokk at yout tnsnames.ora => you mentioned to use the listener servicing port 1521.
    This Listener serves 2 SIDs with the same name:
    SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = yscc02)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/101)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = yscc02)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/101)
    (PROGRAM = hsodbc)
    (ENVS = "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/101/lib32:/usr/lib:/u01/app/oracle/product/101/hs/lib32")
    So when you now connect, the listener does not know which service to spawn. Please check out Metalink note:

    when you want to continue using HSODBC although I strongly recommend you to use DG4ODBC which is configured as mentioned in Metalink note:

  • EPSI Dashboard problem after moving from reporting services 2005 to 2012

    I have created a Dashboard with Allscripts EPSI with a Reporting Services Report.  After we changed from Micrsosoft Reporting Services 2005 to 2012, the report now gets cut in half.  I turned a ticket in to Allscripts and they said that it had
    nothing to do with their software, that it had something to do with a setting on our Reporting Services server.  Please point me into the right direction.

    Hi Jason,
    Based on my understanding, after you move the report from Reporting Services 2005 to Reporting Services 2012, the report can’t display well.
    In Reporting Services, upgrading a report definition in SQL Server Data Tools is the only way to upgrade the .rdl file. In your scenario, if the .rdl file isn’t upgraded in the new environment, it’s expected that the report won’t display well. So please
    open an .rdl file in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) within the new environment, then the Report Designer will automatically create a backup file and upgrades the report to the current namespace. After a report is upgraded, you might notice
    additional errors, warnings, and messages. This is the result of changes to the internal report object model and processing components, which cause messages to appear when underlying problems in the report are detected.

  • IChat Server - Moving from one Mac OSX 10.5 server to another

    Hi
    I have found and read several posts about migrating Mac OSX 10.4 iChat to Mac OSX 10.5, but that's not quite what I want to do. I have deployed a new Xserve on our network and have moved/migrated all services from my old Mac OSX 10.5 server to the new unit now, with the exception of iChat.
    Does anyone know how I can move all of my existing users/settings across from one server to another? I don't really want to have to recreate all the set-up on the new server and it would be much easier if there was a way of moving the iChat Server from one server to another. iChat seems to install itself in lots of places on 10.5 server and I suppose I'm looking for somebody who can tell me which files/folders need to be moved over to the new unit in order for it to work.
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

    Paul,
    stop the ichat server on both machines using:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.jabber.jabberd.plist
    make a backup of /etc/jabberd, /var/jabberd on the target machine
    copy the contents of the directories /etc/jabberd and /var/jabberd from the source machine to the destination machine, ensuring that owners and file permissions are maintained.
    restart the ichat server on the target machine thus:
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.jabber.jabberd.plist
    and it should work. I say should 'cos I have never actually had a reason to do this, but there is no reason I can see that this will not work.
    Note that this assumes that the user community (names) on the target machine are the same as the source, certificates if you use them are in the same place and, I guess it should go without saying, but the name of the ichat server and DNS names are the same. Note that DNS must be correct and pointing to the target machine.

  • Moving from P2P Windows to Standalone Mac Server

    Hi all, I hope you can help me with a large problem. For the last 2 years we have been running up to 50 windows machines on a peer to peer network, we have now reached breaking point. After a bit of gentle persuasion, we have purchased the following.
    A DP 800Mhz G4 Quicksilver
    Unlimited Client Edition of Tiger Server 10.4.3
    Here's the problem, how effective will this system | software be at pretending to be an active directory server (pdc)?
    #1 I want to set up is windows users accounts with authentication to access files over the network.
    #2 I would like to store all their files both on their machines and on the server.(Home Directories)
    #3 At some point we would like to set up a VPN between two sites for file access.
    I have used macs for a long time, but only in the sense of design and production. I understand networking and protocols well, but this is a bit daunting, any help on a beginners guide? How would you go about setting this up?
    Thanks for your help.

    There are two reasons for doing this.
    A: Windows liscensing practices leave a lot to be desired, we are a small company with 40 employees, but we are expanding and hence need to look forward to having an expandable infrastructure - at the 'right' price.
    B: The network currently consisits of mostly PC clients, but we are gradually changing over to macs - (A great deal of of work is graphics / web based).
    I always used macs for everything and have never had any problems (no major ones at least), this seems to be the next logical step. The server software turned up yesterday, so it's all hands to battle stations.

  • Pulling data from oracle into sql server 2005

    hi,
    these days i am working on sql server 2005 on windows server 2008 64 bit.
    and oracle 10g on 32 bit unix.
    my problem is that when i am pulling data from oracle into sql server it shows me about *500-700 entries less*.
    why this is happening? is it because 32 bit to 64bit? or is it because of different os?

    Akki,
    are you using snapshot or replication from MSSQL? I am doing the same thing, hope to share your experience.
    I am using import/export from MGT studio and pull some data from Oracle database, I am working on how to update the changes on these tables pulled from Oracle.
    Thanks,

    SQL Server databases have three types of files:
    Primary data files
    The primary data file is the starting point of the database and points to the other files in the database. Every database has one primary data file. The recommended file name extension for primary data files is .mdf.
    Secondary data files
    Secondary data files make up all the data files, other than the primary data file. Some databases may not have any secondary data files, while others have several secondary data files. The recommended file name extension for secondary data files is .ndf.
    Log files
    Log files hold all the log information that is used to recover the database. There must be at least one log file for each database, although there can be more than one. The recommended file name extension for log files is .ldf.

    Hi,
    You have the wrong values in the tnsnames.ora entry.
    You have -
    HUAWEI_DCDB =
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1523))
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=hsagent))
    (HS=OK)
    but the CONNECT_DATA information is incorrect. it should be -
    HUAWEI_DCDB =
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1523))
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=HUAWEI_DCDB))
    (HS=OK)
    The sid needs to match the sid defined in the listener.ora for the gateway.
    The actual tnsnames.ora entry should have spaces at the beginning of each line except the first, as they are lost in the forum entries.
    Once this is fixed you may also have a problem unless you put a user and password in the create database link statement -
    create public database link HUAWEI_DCDB connect to "userid" identified by "password" using 'HUAWEI_DCDB';
    One other point is that 10.2 HSODBC is now desupported and has been replaced by the 11g Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC). You should plan to install and use that instead of HSODBC to be on a fully supported product.

    Mike

    I am trying to set up the Master Repository with the MS SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver. I copied the sqljdbc.jar file into the /drivers directory, but it is not appearing in the drop down list. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    EDIT: I have solved the problem by looking at the instructions in the Thread: "Not able to estabish connection with SQLServer2005 from the Topology Manage" At first glance I did not think this would relate to my issue.
    Edited by: user9535932 on Nov 12, 2008 3:14 PM

    Hi,
    The driver will not appear in the list, but you can do this way.
    JDBC driver MS SQL Server 2005 :
    com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
    URL MS SQL Server 2005 :
    jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433;selectMethod=cursor;databaseName=xyz;integratedSecurity=false
    Hopefully it solve your problem..

    We are trying to connect ORACLE server from sql server 2005 using Linked Server Feature in SqlServer 2005
    Generally Oracle Client software is needed for this activity in the sql server machine.
    Can we use "Oracle InstantClient" instead of "Oracle Client Software" to connect ORACLE using Linked Servers ?
    Please give us your views, any existing reports similar to this activity
    Thanks & Regards,
    Palani

    Thanks for your reply
    I agree that Oracle Client software is used to connect oracle from SQL SERVER 2005.
    But my doubt is can we use Oracle InstantClient instead of Oracle Client software to connect oracle from SQL SERVER 2005
    with respect to Oracle Instant Client - I would like to know the development steps (Not the installation steps of Oracle Instant Client in windows machine) to connect ORACLE server.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Palani

  • How to calculate the HFM Cube size in SQL Server-2005

    Hi
    How to calculate the HFM Cube size in SQL Server-2005 ?
    Below query used for Oracle. Then what is query for SQL Server?
    SQL> select sum(bytes/1024/1024) from dba_segments where segment_name like 'FINANCIAL_%' and owner='HFM';
    SUM(BYTES/1024/1024)
    SQL> select sum(bytes/1024/1024) from dba_segments where segment_name like 'HSV FINANCIAL%' and owner='HFM';
    SUM(BYTES/1024/1024)
    Regards

    What is your objective? The subcube in HFM is a concept which applies to the application tier - not so much to the database tier. The size of the subcube is the unique number of data strips (data values for January - December inclusive, for example) for the given entity, currency triplet or Parent.Child node. You have to account for parent accounts and customs which don't exist in the database but are generated in RAM in the application tier.
    So, if your objective is to find the largest subcubes, you could do this by querying the database and counting the number of records per entity/value (DCE tables) or parent.child entity combination (DCN tables). I'm not versed in SQL, but I think the script below would just tell you the schema size and not the subcube sizes.
    Check out Accelatis.com for a third party software product that can do this for you. The feature is called the Subcube Analyzer and was written by the same team that wrote HFM, so they ought to know how this works :-)
