Moving Physical SQL Cluster into Virtual SQL Cluster based on Hyper-V Failover

Hello All............I have a SQL Cluster based on Physical Hardware that has Three-3 instances as well. I have setup a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (2012 R2) and have built Virtual/Guest SQL Cluster (2012 R2) upon it.  Now, I intend to move
the instances/databases from Physical SQL Cluster to Virtual SQL Cluster.
1.  Is this supported?  If so, I would appreciate any guidance on it?
2.  Is P2V of SQL Cluster supported in Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2?

Hi Sir,
Please refer to the following blog regarding moving SCCVM SQL database to another SQL server:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2013/04/02/how-to-move-the-configmgr-2012-site-database-to-a-new-sql-server.aspx
It is quoted from the  similar thread :

But it seems that is a migration of system center production , I would suggest you to post the question to system center forum :

  • Moving Physical Cluster into Virtual Cluster

    Hello All...........I have a Physical SQL Cluster 1 cluster1.domain.com (Node A and
Node B) using SAN A.  Physical SQL Cluster contains
    three-3 instances.
I have built a Hyper-V Failover Cluster and upon it I have also built a Guest/Virtual SQL Cluster 2
    cluster2.domain.com (Node A and Node B) using SAN B.
Now, I want to move the instance/databases from Physical SQL Cluster 1 cluster1.domain.com to Guest/Virtual SQL Cluster 2 cluster2.domain.com.  Is this supported?
Or do I have to add the Virtual Nodes (NodeC and
NodeD) to cluster1.domain.com and then failover the
instances/database to new virtual nodes and then remove the Physical Nodes (NodeA and
    NodeB).
Also, confused as to how would I manage the Storage as old Physical SQL Cluster
cluster1.domain.com uses SAN A and I have new Virtual SQL Cluster
cluster2.domain.com on SAN B.  Would I be requiring to change the instances/databases location as well?
Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Hello,
There is a good bit of different things going on here so I'll try and make it short.
Normally, it wouldn't be a problem to add in new nodes (virtual) to the current physical, install SQL Server, and eventually evict the physical nodes in order to migrate. However, you're using a different SAN for the storage. You could *still* do this, but
you'd need to have SAN replication on the backend between the two and set it up very much like a 2008/R2 geo-cluster.
The *easier* way, depending on clients, would be to either log-ship or mirror the databases to the new instances. When you have time to cutover, fail the mirrors to the new cluster and then remove mirroring. The clients would need to either be aliased or
re-pointed. It could be done less cleanly by using a cname change for the old to the new but I'd stay away from that.

  • Extending Physical Cluster into Virtual Cluster

Hello All...........I have a Physical SQL Cluster cluster.domain.com (Physical_NodeA and
Physical_NodeB) using SAN A.  Physical SQL Cluster contains
three-3 instances.  I intend to move this cluster into my Hyper-V Failover Cluster enviornment and I want to get rid of both Physical nodes (Physical_NodeA and
Physical_NodeB) along with shared storage on SAN A.  I have devised following approach:
    -  Extend existing Physical Cluster cluster.domain.com on
(Physical_NodeA and Physical_NobeB) with shared storage
    SAN A
        - By adding Virtual Nodes (Virtual_NodeC and
    Virtual_NodeD) to cluster.domain.com
    - Creating LUN/s that are shared by all four nodes (Physical_NodeA, Physical_NodeB, Virtual_NodeC and Virtual NodeD) on
    SAN B
    - Moving Instances/Databases location to new LUN/s on
    SAN B
    - Failover to new Virtual Nodes either Virtual_NodeC or
    Virtual_NodeD
    - Evict Physical_NodeA and Physical_NodeB
    - Remove Physical_NodeA and Physical_NodeB from Host Group at
    SAN A
    - Remove LUN/s from SAN A.
Your thought on above procedure would be appreciated.

I am not sure why you want to do all of these.
Why cant you just get the new virtual environment up and running with SQL Server and just migrate the databases to the new cluster?
I think the amount of downtime you incur would be less in this approach.

  • How to Perform Forced Manual Failover of Availability Group (SQL Server) and WSFC (Windows Server Failover Cluster)

I have a scenario with the three nodes with server 2012 standard, each running an instance of SQL Server 2012 enterprise, participate in a
single Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) that spans two data centers.
If the nodes in the primary data center are unavailable due to data center outage. Then how I can able to access node in the WSFC (Windows Server Failover Cluster) in the secondary disaster recovery data center automatically with some script.
I want to write script that can be able to check primary data center by pinging some IP after every 5 or 10 minutes.

You are trying to implement manually what should be happening automatically in the cluster. If the primary SQL Server becomes unavailable in the data center, it should fail over to the secondary SQL Server automatically.  Is that not working?
You also might want to run this configuration by some SQL experts.  I am not a SQL expert, but if you have both hosts in the data center in a cluster, there is no need for replication between those two nodes as they would be accessing
the database from some form of shared storage.  Then it looks like you are trying to implement Always On to the DR site.  I'm not sure you can mix both types of failover in a single configuration.
FYI, it would make more sense to establish a file share witness in your DR site instead of placing a third node in the data center for Node Majority quorum.

  • 2 Node Hyper-V failover cluster with sql server

I have 2 IBM Servers with Server 2012 installed and both machines have SQL server express. Is it possible to create HYPER-V Failover between the 2 servers including the SQL SERVER Instance meaning if the main node fails the second server will take over.
The second will act as virtualized failover of the main node with failover instace to act as active to active approach.
I hope can someone give me an advice with my question.

Sure you can do that. But it's a long story what's better SQL Server FCI or AlwaysOn. See:
    FCI Vs. AlwaysOn
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff929171.aspx
(biggest issue with AlwaysOn - it does require Enterprise license so is COSTY)
    Good idea to ask here:
SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-us/home?forum=sqldisasterrecovery
In any case you'll need either physical or virtual shared storage. For FCI to host everything and witness disk and for AlwaysOn just for witness (AlwaysOn does replication between DAS on it's own).
    Good luck :)

  • Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    -  The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2
    -  Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.
    1.  I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them.  To make sure I do not miss out anything.
    2.  Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?
    3.  What requires special attention in this scenario?

    Thanks for the reply.
So, I do not need to do anything and just simply add both the cluster and standalone into VMM and then simply use the Move option.  Please, confirm if I have understood it correct.
Yes. But be carefull. First shut down your VM's
if possible and configure them in such a way they don't automatically start. If you install the SCVMM Agent, some Hyper-V related services are restarted, when some VMs start during that process you system may stall. I have seen this multipe times.
There is another dirty option that worked of us perfectly. Export the VMs. Then import those VMs to a local disk on one Hyper-V Server. Refresh the Hyper-V Server and Virtual Machines on that Hyper-V Server. Give it a few minutes. Then do
a Live Migration while at the same time makeing it "Highly Available" by moving it to your CSV. Works flawlessly. DO NOT IMPORT THE VMS TO YOUR CSV, otherwise you can't change it to "Highly Avaiable" unless you have
two CSVs. Importing it straight to a CSV does not make them Highly Available.

  • View log not showing physical SQL generated in OBIEE 11.1.1.6.7

    Hi,
I am currently using OBIEE 11.1.1.6.7 version. In this version I am unable to view the physical SQL generated by OBIEE under Administration --> Manage Marketing Jobs --> Select a Job --> Click on View SQL OR Administration --> Manage Sessions--> Select a Job --> Click on View SQL. It is not showing the physical SQL generated by OBIEE for a report or segment which I have executed.
It was available in previous version i.e. OBIEE 10.1.3.4.2.
I have searched in metalink and it has been suggested to use the following <Filters> section into instanceconfig.xml file. I have added the following details into existing instanceconfig.xml file and then restarted the BI services. Still the problem persist.
    <Filters>

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
We used to view the log details (physical SQL) using Manage Marketing Jobs in OBIEE10g.
In OBIEE11g we can see the job details and when selecting a job (under Action column Details link) there is an option in left pane as 'View Log'. If I click on 'View Log' it is showing as 'No Logs Found'.
Just wanted to confirm if this is an issue in OBIEE11g.
Also, I believe there is a limitation in 'Manage Session' to view the number of job details whereas in 'Manage Marketing Jobs' section we can increase the number of jobs to be displayed.
    Thanks,

  • Virtual memory in a hyper-v failover cluster

    Hi all,
We have a window 2008 R2 hyper-V failover cluster working fine. It has two hosts, with 104 GB of memory on each of them.As I added new virtual instances I had been updating memory.
The point is that as I do that page file for virtual memory has been growing and now System volumen has only 20 GB free space.
I had like to go on adding memory for new virtual instances, so I need to fix this problem.  Which is the recommended configuration for this? Can I disable virtual memory as long as I have an enormous quantity of physical memory available?
    Thank you very much.
    Kind regards,
    David.

    Hi,
that enormous page file at Hyper-V Servers make no sence.
We do not need to configure virtual memory for physical Memory that is assigned to VMs.
    Check this for more informations:

  • Row Number() over partition by Order by in OBIEE Physical SQL

    Hi ,
I created a OBIEE report in Dev using Answers. When I move the same report to Live, the count of rows was more in Live environment when compared to Dev.
The objects count is same in both Dev and Production.
WheniI verified the log file, I found that the Physical SQL in test has
    ROW_NUMBER ()
    OVER
PARTITION BY c1, c4, c5 order by c1,c4,c5) whereas the physical SQL in Production has
    ROW_NUMBER ()
    OVER
    PARTITION BY c1, c4, c5, c8,c9 order by c1,c4,c5,c8,c9)
How this Partiton is done in OBIEE. I have just copied the report from catalog and moved to production. There is no changes in report.
Whether there are any settings to control it? HOw OBIEE does this Row Number() Partiton ? How can get this similiar to Test?
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Johnny

    Hi Saichand,
The links were helpful. But i am not getting how it is working in test and not in live.
I found one difference while deploying . The column names of the object both in Test and Production had spaces. For E.g: Full Name
When this column Full Name is pulled to the repsository in test , it automatically put double quotes for the column names in the physical sql when it hits the database.
But, In production , when I pulled the column the report gave error as Invalid Identifier since OBIEE generated column name as Full Name without double quotes.
Then I changed the column in Phyiscal Layer repository by having double Quotes for all columns. Afte that report worked fine.
Whether this has caused any issue in Row Partition.
Is there any setting to have column name in Double Quotes ?
    Thanks,
    Johnny

  • Logical SQL to physical SQL in datamodel.

I am designing a report in BI publisher and for that I am creating a datamodel.
My datamodel contains 4 dataset with 4 different logical SQLs and all use source as Oracle BIEE.
When I generate/execute xml from datamodel I observed in nqquery.log that BI publisher is executing each logical SQL in sequence.
That is OBIEE first send logical SQL of one of the dataset and then convert it to physical SQL. After first physical SQL is completed then only it is converting second logical SQL to physical.
So logical to physical query is happening in sequence rather than in parallel.
My datamodel contains huge logical SQLs and OBIEE takes almost 40 seconds each to convert it physical query. This will result in total 160 seconds for just converting 4 logical SQLs to physical SQLs.
Does anybody know if there is any setting where I can manage to convert multiple logical to physical in parallel?

    Hi Experts,
    Please help on this.

  • Difference between logical and physical SQL

    Hi all,
I created a dashboard prompt and added some columns from the dimensions and one column from the fact table.
When I run the report in the dashboard and filters using the prompts,I see in the logical sql that all the filters have been applied to the report, but when I check the physical SQL only the filters on the dimensions columns have been applied.
I don't see the filter on the columns from the fact table.
Is there any reason for that?
    Regards

I could figure out what was the issue.
My fact table was using a different MV as source table. The fact table column I was using in the prompt was not mapped correctly to the one in the MV.
