Moving the Digital Editions folder out of Documents

Hi Everyone,
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard). Is there a way for me to move the Digital Editions folder out of my Documents folder without screwing up the software? (I'd like to put it in a separate folder where I keep all of my ebooks.)
It would be a big help if you have any suggestions.
Sincerely Yours,
ISB

You got the basic idea.  I would:
Make sure you quit ADE
Copy your current Digital Editions folder to where you want it to be (important make it a copy) and maybe rename it if you don't want it to be called Digital Editions.
Rename the Digital Editions folder in your Documents folder to something like "Old Digital Editions"
Open up Terminal window and type ln -s (and add a space at the end)
Drag the folder that you created in step 2 onto the terminal window - this will add the full path onto the command line (ie the /Volumes/SecondDrive/ebooks/de above)
Type in a space and then "~/Documents/Digital\ Editions"  without the double quotes into the terminal.
In a finder window make sure it worked by making sure there is now a "Digital Editions" folder that opens up to the folder you created in step 2.
Launch ADE and make sure it still works.
Good Luck...

  • Moving "My Digital Editions" folder

I am trying to move the "My Digital Editions" folder from the default location under "My Documents". When I do so, I have to add my ebooks back to the library (which is OK), but Digital Editions also then adds a "My Digital Editions" folder with a manifest.xml file back under "My Documents".
Is there anyway to change the default location of this "My Digital Editions" folder?

Kudos to robervanbregt (#33) for providing the symbolic link pointer. I just want to suggest to all the frustrated people above that symbolic links can provide users with a tremendous amount of flexibility in where they store their stuff and can help with all the problems described above, and more, so people shouldn't ignore them just because they sound a bit tricky in facty they aren't too hard to manage at all.
For mac users there is a good little utility called SymbolicLinker that makes it really easy to create symbolic links with just a right click on the folder name. I recommend it. Something like symbolic links have been in windows since Vista - see #28 from Anders for the manual instructions; there is at least one tool (Symlinker) out there that attempts to make it easier, but I've never used it so windows users may have to shop around and experiment until they get one that they like.
Anyway, with symbolic links you can place your Digital Editions folder anywhere you like - secondar hard drive, usb drive, even on a network drive, or in your Dropbox folder. You will still need a symlink file sitting within your Documents folder called "Digital Editions" on a mac (or "My Digital Editions" on windows). That symlink file is tiny, and you can forget about it once you've put it in place.
So this helps if all you want to do is store your books and the index on perhaps a secondary harddrive, or a usb drive, or in Dropbox. However it seems that some people want to hide the Digital Editions folder away somewhere and file their actual books somewhere else. That can be done.
When you download a non-DMR ePub, download it straight to its final destination, and use the add item command in ADE. The file will stay exactly where you put it. No problem.
If you've bought a DRM-protected file, it will appear in the form of a .acsm file that ADE will run and download the ePub file, which will end up in the digital editions folder (which as we've already seen, can be placed anywhere on your system by using a symbolic link). However if you want to go one step further and put your ePub in a separate folder somewhere else, that does need a manual step. Copy the ePub and put the copy where you want it to be finally. This could take all of ten seconds, but if you want to make it quicker, create another symbolic link to the final destination of the file and place it inside the Digital Editions folder. Then you don't have to spend time navigating to the final destination: just copy the file, click on the link and paste the file. Then add the book to your library selecting the version in the new location, and delete the version in the old (Digital Editions) location. Not too hard, unless you download more than a few DRM books a day. (Note you can select multiple books at one time to add them, but I haven't found a way to delete them in a batch.)
True, users shouldn't have to do stuff like this - applications should be designed to meet users' needs, and ADE falls short in this area, as well as in others. But it's not actually a big deal to set up a manageable alternative system that allows you full choice where to put things. And right now I don't know of another application that can help me manage both DRM and non-DRM files the way I want to.
My approach is: on my desktop computer (where I usually buy things) I put everything in a single folder on Dropbox, symlinked from the mandatory Document folder location. I use that Dropbox folder also as my download folder for non-DRM files, so everything is together. On my laptop, I also use ATE but without symlinking to dropbox - I use the default folder location so that the manifest.xml files don't get mixed up, as I have a different but overlapping set of books in each library. However there are no actual books in the default folder on my laptop, they all stay in the Dropbox folder, of course.  This also makes adding a book to Aldiko in my Android very easy. I just navigate to the dropbox folder from the Aldiko file function, go to my digital editions folder and select the file for import.
BTW What's this in the ADE help page about using a USB drive or emailing the file to yourself?  Does anyone actually do that in the 21st century?

  • I would like to select the location of my "My Digital Editions" folder. How can I do so?

The options / preferences for Adobe DIgital Eds seems quite limited. In particular, users should be able to choose the location where digital items are stored. The default arrangements throw off my document syncing. I do not want the My Digital Editions folder in My Documents. Is there currently a way to choose the location of the My Digital Editions folder? Will there be in the future? After all, it is my computer.
    Thanks, Michael

Moving this discussion to the Adobe Digital Editions forum.
Michael I am sorry but Adobe Digital Editions does not support a custom location for the My Digital Editions folder at this time.

  • Edit location of the "My Digital Editions" folder?

Is there any way to change the file path/directory location for the "MyDigital Editions" folder? I am required to put folders with my content files in a particular subfolder of "My Documents". I won't be able to use ePub docs if I can't change the folder location. Example: I need to change .../My Documents/My Digital Editions to .../My Documents/Required/My Digital Editions.

There's no way to do it from Digital Editions itself.
You can do it by making directory junction (on PC, and I'm sure Mac has something similar).
Move the directory and any files you already have from  .../My Documents/My Digital Editions to wherever you want them.
    Open a command prompt
    Navigate to .../My Documents.
Type mklink /d "My Digital Editions" "wherever you put the directory"
The new directory does not even need to be on the same drive.

If your .epub books are not DRM, just use the free and superior Calibre instead.

  • "Unable to find 'Digital Editions' Folder"

    Hi everybody,
I tried several times to install, uninstall, reinstall, etc. Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.1.
Unfortuately, the result is each time the same : I get a box telling (in French) "Unable to find 'Digital Edition' Folder".
I created manually a "Digital Editions" and a "My Digital Editions" folders in the "My Documents" (or Documents?) folder in Vista (in fact, my D: HD).
I did the same in the User\Me\Documents Folder, just in case.
The software is still unable to locate the desired folder.
I searched the program folder and did not find any config file such as an .ini file to give me any information.
I searched the registry and did not find any entry to tell me where that folder could be.
And, there is no preference menu in the software to manually choose a "Digital Edition Folder"
So, does it mean that software will never work on my computer?
Is there anything I can do to make it work?
    Thanks in advance
    Philippe

Oops! I saw too late that there has been already a thread about that issue... for 2 years!!!
    And still no satisfying answer!
Congratulations, Adobe, how efficient you are!

  • Can't Find Solution for Could not find Digital Editions folder

I have checked many posts but I cannot get my ADE to work.  I get the message "Could not find Digital Editions folder."  I am running Windows 7 Enterprise.  I have tried several solutions but the things they are talking about do not exist on my computer (D drive for instance).  Can someone please, please, please help me or either direct me to the proper answer....

I don't know much about your efforts from your email - such as what you did
to install ADE and when, and whom you're talking to about your problem (ADE
or Microsoft).  So, I'll have to wing an answer - and I hope it helps!
When ADE installs, it sets up an Adobe Digital Editions folder, which
contains the software and, by default, is installed on Drive C.  If you
elected to install the software, but did not complete the installation, Win
7 will show you an icon but won't have the software to back it up.  On your
desktop, right-click on the ADE icon, and click on Properties at the bottom
of the drop-down window.  A small window should appear with the location of
the software.  If it's empty, ADE was not installed properly. It should show
    you a drive and folder.
So, if it's there, then what's next, you say.  Something is wrong with the
registry if Win 7 won't open ADE and it shows up in the icon properties.

  • Book file missing in Digital Editions folder.

My PC has a folder named Digital Editions. Presently, it contains a PNG (Picture) and annotation of a purchased book.
Normally, clicking on the book cover and selecting "Open with Digital Editions", the Digital Editions program immediately open with the book ready to read.
In this instance, clicking on the book cover and selecting "Open with DE", opens the DE program MINUS any sign of the book.
What remedy do I have, in order to recover the book for reading?
    Please advise.

You can suggest something like that to Adobe, but be aware that change to
this program suite comes slowly - very slowly.

  • Good idea? . . . Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume

Read the below quote from Mac Performance Guide. Is it a good idea? I know a bit of DOS, so I am used to command line commands but even after after Lloyd Chambers explanation, still not sure what is going to happen?
    ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
The reason I want to move my Mail folder out of the home directory is because I plan to have a SSD as my boot drive and the home directory is on the boot drive, correct?
"Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume
This trick lets you move your Mail folder out of your home directory onto your data volume. I’ve used this technique for years so that I can forget about having to back up my home directory (default location for Apple Mail) and simply back up my one data volume: Master. The same trick can be used for any similarly irritating program that insists on storing its data in your home directory, rather than giving you a choice (a few programs are too brain-dead for this to work). Programs like iTunes let you choose where to put your music; use that option.
Your Apple Mail folder is in the Library folder of your home directory.
The trick requires starting Terminal. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop here! You are going to make a symbolic link.
    0. Quit Apple Mail, and make a backup of your mail folder.
    1. Copy the Mail folder to the top level of your data drive (or elsewhere, then modify step 3 appropriately).
    2. Rename the original mail folder to Mail.old as an additional backup.
    3. Start a Terminal window and type:
    ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
This makes a symbolic link to the folder Mail on the volume Master (type the name of your volume, and use quotes around it if the volume name contains a space character). The resulting file Library/Mail is a tiny file that says “look over there on /Volumes/Master/Mail instead”.
From here on out Apple Mail won’t know the difference! Launch Apple Mail and verify that it worked. If you encounter problems, simply copy your backup back into place."

I just put the entire /Users/myaccount on another drive.
Unlock Account control panel - advanced options -
    /Volumes/volname/Users/myaccount
Move the whole enchilada instead of just mail. Definitely want to get Safari or web browsers cache which does a lot of I/O also. maybe put /Users on 2nd SSD or 10K VelociRaptor. Or just use your 640GB drive for /Users

    Hi Shreya,
That answer seems to work in purchased books but in my case I dont know who is the ebook provider in lebrary.  I asked library people and they did not give me any contact to reset the activation.  I will try again to find out that contact. I was wondering if there is any way at our side so we can fix this.  Probably there is nothing. Thanks anyway.

We plan to remove this limitation in the free Personal Edition of Lumira before the end of this year.  In the meantime, as mentioned by Chris, you can initiate the 30 day trial option which you can activate from within the "Home" page of the Personal Edition of Lumira.

  • Printing to PDF in Digital Editions breaks out the file

I don't like that if you allow printing of a PDF in your DRM permissions that a user of Digital Editions can print to a PDF and essentially "break" the DRM by creating a new DRM-free PDF.
Is there a way to prevent this?
Thanks for the help. (I'm not the ACS server tech guy, but just hoping someone can help so our tech guy can stop this from happening - without turning off printing completely.)
    Mike

Any new activity on this?  I've only been putting up files with No Printing Allowed in the DRM settings.
Is there a way to allow printing, but not allow some one to print to a new DRM-free PDF?

  • Search text fails in Digital Editions 3.0 if document is encoded as PDF

I installed Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 and attempted to do a text search. I found that if the document was encoded as ePub, the search worked fine. If the documented was encoded as PDF, the search fails. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hmm, it shouldn't be that much of a problem. I searched my entire drive for "digital editions", and this is the whole thing:
    /Applications/Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.app
    /Users/user/Library/Caches/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app
    /Users/user/Documents/Digital Editions
    /Users/user/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.bom
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.adobe.DigitalEditions.plist
The application itself, three small files scattered in your user account, to unimportant installation receipt files, and another preference file in the root Library folder. Removing those should remove everything related to version 3, which is what I have installed.
Where I substituted "user" above (for the three entries of /Users/user/...), replace that with whatever the actual name of your user account is.
Edit: I double checked the installer using a small app that sorts out every file in an installer, and where each item would normally be installed. The main app is literally the only item in the installer. The receipts are created by the OS per the installer's data, and the other minor preference files are created when the app is first run. There is nothing else.
