MS Word 2003 - highlighting problem

Hi, i have a problem with Word 2003, which i have as part of office 03 pro edition.
When i drag select some text in it, typing something in doesn't overwrite it, it just sticks the new text in infront of the selection. Pressing backspace also doesn't delete it. the only way to remove the text is to select it and hit Del before typing anything. I've tried putting my office CD back in and hitting repair, and i've tried hitting reinstall (which replaces all the files and presumably registry data without having to uninstall first, all it does differently to a fresh install is bypass the product key stuff and go on the validation from previous install), but after either of those the problem's still there.
has anyone had a similar problem or does anyone know of a solution?

ah jack, if only all problems were as simple as hitting the insert key. unfortunately this problem can't be solved with that.
StefanS, I've tried what i think you mean, removing it via "add/remove programs" in control panel and reinstalling chosing custom and the minimum components. I didn't think it would work, since this copy of office has been fine on this computer for the first 6 months or so and has worked on my old computer fine for years.... and then it didn't work.
Since my windows explorer is messed up too, i may have some sort of virus, although symantec corporate 10 can't see anything. whatever it is, i have enough problems i think to warrant a reinstall of windows via the toshiba product recovery CD (hope this OEM copy doesn't need activating, i hate how u can only activate windows 3 times per CD and after that you have to buy windows again) I recently bought an external hard drive, so i'll back up stuff onto there and wipe my computer.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

  • Opening Word 2003 manual problems

    Hello,
I have a manual with linked bitmaps and imported bitmaps. All bitmaps that are links, are not imported in Pages 08.
A table with imported bitmaps (bitmaps that are in the Word doc) has only 30% of the pictures.
I also opened our Word doc in OpenOffice 3.0. This conversion is 100% succesfull.
I am trying Pages. Using it is indeed easy, but how can I convert our manuals (300 pages totally) to Pages without losing the pictures ?
    Thanks,
    Hubert Anemaat

Since Word is not an Apple product, you'll should repost your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac Office products, rather than on an Apple forum, as they're obviously geared more toward the issue at hand.

  • Problem printing #10 envelopes on HP c410a printer with word 2003

Having problem printing #10 envelopes on Hp c410a printer from MS Word 2003 on MS XP system, I have tried all the options under the MS Word program and as well under the printer setup options. I just can not get it to print.

    Hi there stol08,
Try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03275041&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
It can fix a lot on its own and if not give a better idea of what is going on.
    Best of Luck!

  • Anyone else having problems creating autotext entries in Word 2003 after installing Acrobat 10 pro?

After installing Adobe Acrobat 10 Professional I can no longer create Autotext entries in Word 2003.
It seems to specifically be a problem with the Acrobat PDFMaker plugin for Microsoft Office as if I dont install that option Autotext does work however I need that functionality.
    I've tried version 10.0.0 and 10.1.3.
Is anyone else having this problem?

It looks like Acrobat v7 had a similar issue preventing Microsoft Word from saving changes to the Normal.dot template which was later resloved in the 7.0.5 patch.

  • Problem Publishing Handouts to Word 2003

I am having a problem publishing from Adobe Captivate 4 to Word 2003.  I have followed all steps to create the file:
    Open an Adobe Captivate project.
    Select File > Publish.
In the Publish dialog box, select Print.
In Project Title, enter the desired name without the filename extension (.doc).
In Folder, enter the full path for the folder in which to save the file or click Browse to locate the folder.
Select an Export range. The export range is made up of the slides that you want to export to Word. You can select all slides, the current slide, a selection, or a range of slides.
    In Type, select Handouts.
Select from the following Handout Layout options:  Use Tables In The Output, Slides Per Page, Caption Text, Add Blank Lines For Notes, etc.
    When you finish, click Publish.
The problem occurs when I open the Word doc--all slide notes and info is there, but the images themselves are not in the Word doc.  I have tried publishing as a storyboard, lesson, handout and step by step--the issue occurs in all scenarios.
    Thank you!

    Hello
Perhaps you already checked it, but I did not read it in your posting: in the Handout Layout Options, did you activate 'Include objects and Question slides'? Those objects are all the 'graphical' things like images, the captions (not the text in the captions), the drawings...

  • Word updated to 2003 - now problems

    My colleague's version of Word was just updated to 2003;
however, he is using the same PC, same operating system, and same
RoboHelp Office (X.0.2) as previously (he uses both RoboHTML and
RoboHelp for Word). He is getting multiple Word error messages
(e.g., "Word has encountered a problem...", "Do you want to start
    in safe mode?", etc.)
I recall Peter advising that when initially installing Word
and RoboHelp, a person needs to install Word FIRST, and then
install RoboHelp after Word. But what about in this case -- when
Word had been on the PC but was just UPDATED to 2003 -- would a
person need to de- and reinsall RoboHelp in this instance?
Note: My colleague also attempted downloading the Word 2003
patch but ran into problems with that too.
Thanks much for your insights and help!

"Just" updated. That's a big change so uninstall RH and
    reinstall it.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Problems converting word 2003 to pdf

When I print word to pdf, the resulting pdf document has missing text and paragraphs.  The only way I seem to be able to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall the original software.  It is driving me mad.  I have done this about 20 times now.
    Can any one PLEASE help.

    Hi there
It doesn't seem to matter how I do it, whether it is creating pdf by file print method or convert to pdf.
It also happens when I print as pdf through MYOB.
Windows XP Professional with SP3, Word 2003 with SP3 as part of Microsoft Office Pro 2003 and Acrobat 9.0 Pro Extended - Version 9.4.5.236.
Am getting pretty desperate.  Would really appreciated your help.
I have attached a page for your reference.  All the coloured rectangles should contain text as per the first.
    Kind regards

  • Problem converting Word 2003 document to PDF using Acrobat 8

I have tried without success to generate a PDF from a Word document that is 191 pages long and contains many hyperlinks.
Although I have generated similar PDF documents in the past using the Acrobat PDFMaker macro button within Word (which preserves all the links, unlike printing to PDF), the one I am currently working on does not generate a PDF document.
It appears to follow the normal process of searching for hyperlinks, converting to PDF, etc - which takes close to 35-40 minutes, but once it looks to be done, it shows a brief Adobe splash screen and disappears entirely.
I have searched online and through various forums and can't find any explanation.
    I would appreciate any input.
    Thank you!

Try printing a few pages to the Adobe PDF printer to be sure the creation process works. If that works, then go back and empty your TEMP folder, particularly if your 191 pages includes many graphics. You might also want to use the Compress feature in WORD 2003 for graphics to reduce the resolution of all the graphics (it is in the lower left of the first tab of the format menu for WORD graphics).

  • PDF to Word 2003 problem

I am running Acrobat 9 and Word 2003.  I want to export the .pdf file as a .doc file.  This has worked in the past, but currently doesn't.  I open the <file.pdf> file and then click export --> word.  The document initialized but the OCR doesn't run.  When I open the <file.doc>, it looks like an image.with the little box around it.  I also tried exporting to <file.rtf> and to <file.txt> with the same result.  What am I doing wrong here?

You have to run OCR in Acrobat first, then export. OCR is not typically run as part of the save as process unless I have missed something in the new versions.

  • OT: Problems with docs from Word 2003 in Word 2008

First, my apologies because this is probably off topic but no one answered in the officeformac.com forum.
    Now, to my question.
I often have to work with Word documents (from 10 to 100 or so pages) that have been created using Word 2003 for Windows. In these docs, track changes is turned on.
When I open them with Word 2008 for Mac (in compatibility mode) everything works okay. I can edit and changes are tracked (with bubbles at the side and all).
However, when I copy the doc back on the server (samba share) and open the doc again with Word 2003 on a Windows machine, the docs are often (though not always) messed up. To be precise, all the tables are split up in such a way, that each row of a table appears on it's own page. All the content is there, but the tables are spread over multiple pages.
I have all the Mac and Word updates installed and also installed the Windows fonts.
Has anyone had similar experiences? Any ideas what could be causing this?
    Best regards

My only thoughts would be to try NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both of which are extremely MS Office compatible, and work on Leopard. They also have PC versions as well.
MS Office on Macs has never been a really good fit, and as you are aware, support from MS is poor to nonexistent.

  • Acrobat standard 6 user defined bookmark from word 2003

    Hi..
I've been trying to convert word 2003 documents to pdf using acrobat standard 6. All seems fine except the user defined bookmarks in the word document.
The bookmarks work fine from the bookmark pane but when accessing them through the hyperlinks within the document the destinations are wrong. The pointer will jump to the page it is in or maybe 1-2 two pages adjusent to the page the bookmark actually is in.
Can someone help me with fixing this problem?
    Cheers!

    Steven,
If it happened after an uninstall as you indicated, you may have to go to the add/remove in the control panel and do a repair on Acrobat. If the printer works, then you need to check that PDF Maker also works (it uses the printer). Asking about the printer was the first check and it passed.
I am not good at the PDF Maker options, but looks like that is the problems.
For MrEclipseguy, you need to be looking at the same options. Check things out in WORD first and then play with the other part. In WORD, there are issues with enabling the toolbar that is highlighted in other topics. I do not remember the solution.

  • RH8 for Word 2003. Runtime Error 5152: Cant move focus to control

Hi, I am trying to open a word file from the RoboHelp source files and am getting the following error:
Runtime Error '5152': Can't move focus to the control because it is invisible, not enabled, or of a type that does not accept the focus.
I am using Word 2003 and RoboHelp 8. I didnt not change anything in the code, its a RoboHelp provided code. RH was installed with my netword id and with admin rights. When I click debug, it highlights the following piece of code.
    Private Function IsRoboHookLoaded() As Boolean
        IsRoboHookLoaded = False
        ' No addins, not loaded
        If (AddIns.Count = 0) Then
            GoTo IsRoboHookLoadedExit
        End If
        For i = 1 To AddIns.Count
            AddInName$ = LCase$(AddIns.Item(i).Name)
            If (AddInName$ = "robohook.wll") Then
                If (AddIns.Item(i).Installed = True) Then
                    IsRoboHookLoaded = True
                    Exit For
                End If
            End If
        Next
    IsRoboHookLoadedExit:
    End Function
Also, when I click end and try to close the Document, I get another error:
Runtime Error '5152': Method 'Name' of Object 'AddIN' failed.
It again highlights the same piece of code on debug.
Can you please suggest why this might be so?
    Thanks in advance.

The formatting is lost if the robohelp.dot template is not present in the same folder as the word document I am trying to open (and edit). The template is still present under application data\templates. Below are your answers:
So if you have the robohelp.dot in the application data\templates folder and open the project and the doc, the fomatting is gone in the doc and it is is plain text, correct? - Yes
Are any styles attached to the text at all? - Yes
For instance if you highlight what was a heading 1, is it still heading 1? - Yes - It still shows as heading 1, but not as big and coloured as the headings in documents with robohelp.dot
if you create a new help project, do you run into the same problem? - Yes
I tried copying the styles from robohelp.dot to my document, but still it doesn't reflect the changes.
I want to be able to open the document (with the robohelp template and its styles attached to it) and edit it, without changing any styles/formatting.
I am not an expert on this but my feeling is it has something deeper to do with other than just the location of the template or the styles. There should be a reason for  the runtime error 5152: "Can't move focus to control....".

  • Microsoft Word 2003 Conflict

I installed Adobe Standard 9 this weekend and it appears to be conflicting with Microsoft Word. I can no longer double-click on a Word file to open it, I can move the cursor in Word document using the left button on my mouse, and I can no longer highlight text in a Word document using the left button on my mouse. I can still move the cursor and highlight text using the arrow keys. There were some Microsoft security updates that I installed about the same day, but I have uninstalled those with no effect. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Thanks.

As I stated in my previous post, I reverted back to Adobe 7 on the computer
I use every day, but I apologize for not mentioning another alternative. I
still needed the ability to read Adobe 9 files that I could not open with
Adobe 7 and I still needed the ability to complete fillable PDFs that would
not fill with Adobe 7, so instead of requesting a refund (which you already
know is a pain in the behind), I installed Adobe 9 on a newer computer at my
office that is running Windows 7. For some reason, the problems with MS Word
2003 do not occur when running Adobe 9 in Windows 7 environment. So, when I
have an Adobe file I cannot read or fill, I have the person who uses that
computer, read or fill that Adobe file for me. I did not upgrade to Windows
7 on the computer I use every day because "Act! for Advisors" which I use
for my work is not very compatible with Windows 7 unless I upgraded that
program, too. I don't know about you, but I avoid upgrading my operating
system until I absolutely have to because the transition has always been
very time consuming and quite an ordeal for me.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill
