Multi core shulder / power managment

Hello I would like to use latest power management from kernel 3.15 instead of p-state.
I've notice that cpupower returns strange info does someone experience same behavior?

  • Macbook (not pro) Core Duo power management

    Hey,
    I pretty new to Arch, but not new to linux. I fell in love with Arch the first time I booted it of the CD for installation.
    I decided to install Arch on my macbook, because I need linux for work. It works well, I don't have fan-speed problems or touchpad problems, but I do have power management issues. I have install and configured CPUFREQ, laptop-more, acpid and kpowersave and I made sure that all of those daemons are running and working. Powertop reports that with turned down backlight the wattage never drops below 17.8 which is too high. OSX uses about 11.
    Now I expect the wattage to drop to 11watts but I just don't understand what hardware is causing trouble. Even with the pure, standard installation of ARCH I still get 17-18 watts of power consumption without any programs running (except for cpufreq and backlight-control).
    It's driving me completely nuts. I recompiled kernels with all kinds of patches. Please, someone help me!

    CPU freq-scaling is working perfectly. I included cpufeq-info output while idling (doing absolutely nothing) and compiling a Kernel. The ondemand governor scales each CPU individually; sometimes CPU 1 is at 1.67 - 2.0 while CPU 2 is at 1.00 and visa versa every other second.
    I don't think frequency scaling is the answer to this problem I'm having. I think it's other hardware that is not properly supported by this flavor of linux at the moment. Here is a list of things I looked at:
    1. Bluetooth - subsystem removed from kernel; no modules running/installed that would interact with this piece of hardware
    2. Touchpad - Mactel patch removed the high number of interupts
    3. Wireless - uses about 1.7 - 2.2Watts; I don't want to/cannot turn this one off!
    4. Graphics - Intel 950G on board; xf86-Video-Intel driver installed. I know about the DRI issue eating up Watts. Would like to keep this on because of compiz. about 1.5 - 1.9 Watts... unsure about this one.
    5. iSight Camera - No drivers installed, not activated??!?!
    6. FireWire - Doesn't make a difference. Nothing attached to any of the ports!

  • Power button/Pins/Multi Core Cable.

    Hi,
    I have a G5.
    The small circuit board and black connector connected to the power button on the front of the case has a number of pins and space for a multi core cable - what function does each cable have? Which one (cable or pin) is positive for the power light for example.
    I wondered if there was any type of service manual or helpful guide to explain the above to me?

    this handles events in coordination with kernel (laptop-mode being a kernel feature since 2.6.6) and acpid (it inserts events and actions that are executed additionally to what acpi's handler.sh specifies). Therefore maybe it would be cool to have it integrated on the acpid page. Based on battery level threshold it can - sync your hdd, switch to a more powerfriendly cpu frequency, hibernate/suspend, and more.

    PS. Innkeeper, could you try to make a list of what features there are that you expect from a powersave-replacement?
    laptop-mode and software suspend are two examples of features where the heavy lifting is provided by the kernel, and you only need something to trigger the right thing - can be a daemon (like acpid, cpufreq, powersave) or a userspace resident program that does the polling or subscribes to some kernel notification and triggers whatever it thinks appropriate (such as kpowersave, gnome-power-manager). I am not sure into what category falls the original powersave.

  • Problems with SpeedStep and Windows Power Management: SYSTEM FREEZES!

    I am running an E6600 on my MSI 975X PUE-Mainboard @ 2,4 GHz.  I am experiencing a strange problem that seems to be related to EIST and/or Windows Power Management:
    As soon as I set Windows Power Management to "Presentation" or any other mode that lets Windows throttle the CPU frequency the system freezes randomly: no bluescreens, no error messages...the only option is to hit the restart button...
    However, if the Windows Power Management Option is set to "Desktop" the system runs just fine!
    Has anyone else experienced similar problems? 
    Any suggestions?

    Intel clearly states that:
    "An OS that supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology is required. Current supporting OSs include:, Microsoft Windows* XP SP2 includes native support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology."
    and further:
    "Finally Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology must be turned on in the OS. Currently, for Windows* XP SP2 operating systems Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology by default is off. To turn it on do the following: Under Control Panel – open Power Options Under the Power Schemes pull down menu To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology ON select, “Minimal Power Management,” power scheme.  To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology OFF select, “Always On,” power scheme."
    If I select the "Minimal Power Management" power scheme, the CPU frequency will drop to about 1,6 GHz and the Voltage (CPU-Z) to 1,136-1,144 V.  Whenever I do that the system will eventuelly freeze.  Skipping through a video file in Media Player Classic is sometimes enough to cause the system to hang. 
    If I select the "Always On" power scheme the system will run stable, no freezes will occur, but the CPU will ALWAYS run @2,4 GHz and the voltage WILL NOT be reduced to 1.14 V.

    Unfortunately, a clean re-install of Windows XP Pro did not take care of my problem.  I've already tried that.  The system is not overclocked and is running with default settings.  Speedstep is enabled. 
    It is interesting to notice, that Dual Core Center always causes my system to freeze, even though Windows Power Management Options are set to "Always On".  I read a lot of bad things about this program and that is one more reason for me to avoid using it.
    Well, I have forwarded my problem to Intel and MSI Support, maybe they will come up with any solution.
    Until then, further suggestions are very welcome...

  • PSE 10 both Organizer and Editor crash on multi-core hardware; set affinity to single cpu mode fixes

    As I have noted in thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/941128 I have found that both the editor and the organizer for PSE 10 crash in a multi core environment, I am running WIndows 64 bit, latest updates (includes sp1), I had the same problems with Windows 7 32 bit.
    Solution is to set the affinity to a single cpu.  From the task manager, select the 'processes' tab, find the exe (eg PhotoshopElementsOrganizer), right-click, select 'Set affinity...' and reduce the number of CPUs selected (checked) to exactly one.  (Under different versions of Windows the exact means for doing this varies, but the essential steps are the same).  It doesn't matter which cpu you select, but if you do both the Editor and the Organizer, put them on different CPUs.
    Given that pretty well all hardware these days is multi-core, my assumption is that Adobe test in a virtualized environment and so do not discover this type of unreliabillity.  Adobe really do need to test their software more thoroughly as the exact same problem existed in PSE 6, so it is hardly new to them.

    The solution is in the above.
    Should Adobe read this, they should take note that a virtualized environment does not provide a decent fidelity emulation of multi-core CPU systems.  The ONLY way to test the reliability of an application is on REAL hardware.

  • X61 power manager on Win 7 64bit

    I have installed Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate edition on my X61 with 4Gb RAM. 
    Fully charged, the power manager shows over 2 hours available time, but the problem I have is that the machine will, without any warning, perform a "critical power level" shutdown when the power available is still showing in excess of 1 hour.
    After reconnecting the charger and restarting the machine, the power manager now shows almost empty - just over 5%.
    All drivers and utilities are the latest available, based on the System Update tool.  The battery also does not come up as being on the recall list, and in all other respects is in good condition - the cycle count is only 56. The power manager reports version 3.31
    Has anyone else observed similar behaviour for the power manager on an X61 ??

  • MacBook Pro Power Management Issues and "Broken" Bootcamp

    This is not a question but rather a solution I have discovered to a problem I have experienced many times now.
    My Core 2 Duo 15" MacBook Pro (non-LED version) has exhibited several issues with the systems power management hardware.
    Firstly: Occasionally the system will refuse to turn on. This has happened to me twice, it usually happens when I am running on just batteries. The very first time it happened I was in a meeting and had important data I had to get from the laptop, I was silently panicking. After swearing at my new 2.5 grand pride and joy, I happened to read an old support article relating to older PowerBooks which exhibited the same problems. Apple recommended taking the battery out and then holding the power button for several seconds and then reinserting the battery. This apparently resets the power management hardware feature -- and it worked, and has worked three times since.
    Secondly: I have had a persistent problem when running Bootcamp. Sometimes the machine doesn’t go to sleep properly and although it everything looks right it continues to run (and perhaps, like me, you’ve backed it away in your bag and hence didnt notice it burning up. What has happened to me several times is that it literally "breaks" Windows XP. When you wake the computer or turn it back on (if the battery drained) then youll find Windows running PAINFULLY slow. If you press CTRL-ALT-DELETE (to bring up the task manager) I would see that the CPU is working very hard (at nearly full utilization) and it is so occupied that it won’t respond to anything I do at all. No matter what I did (I attempted a system restore, which was a two hour task with the computer running in its "broken" state) nothing would bring windows back to life. The first two times this occurred I was devastated because the only thing left for me to try was to remove the windows partition and install it fresh (thus losing all my files and settings -- although for the record you can still access the windows partitions files through Mac OS X). This ruined a near full day for me each time the computer did this (having a lot of settings and tweaks and installed programs to reapply). The third time this happened I did the "trick" listed above and reset the MacBook Pro's power management hardware. this has solved the problem ever since (two additional times now). I post this in case someone experiencing the same issue searches the forum.
    I dont know the technical explanation but obviously there is an issue within this series of MacBook Pro's power management. Perhaps it relates to the "artificial" BIOS the system presents to windows through Apple's EFI system (Windows requires legacy BIOS to operate and all Intel Macs alternatively use EFI, so an extra "trick" had to be added by Apple for Windows to be compatible).

    If nothing seems to help, call AppleCare again, and tell them the battery replacement did not solve the problem and that you tried the above and tell them the results you got.

  • Thinkpad L520 Power Management Issues

    Hi all,
    I have to report several issues with my Thinkpad (Core i5 2520M).
    Both seem to be related to power management, that's why I decided to put them in one thread.
    The problems occur on battery and with ac power connected, I have a 90 Watt power supply.
    I am running Windows 7 x64 on my laptop, and I've applied all patches from Microsoft Update and Lenovo System Update.
    All drivers are up to date. I am using the latest BIOS file (1.20).
    The first problem is: My Thinkpad does not automatically increase CPU speed, it is always staying at 800 Mhz.
    Even running Prime95 does not trigger some upscaling.
    I experienced the same behaviour under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which I booted to check the problem.
    In Windows, I set all power management options to full power (Windows Energy Control Panel and Lenovo Power Manager as well), still no change. 
    A complete BIOS reset (with removing the CMOS battery) did not change the situation.
    The only workaround so far is, to run a software called "ThrottleStop", and to uncheck the box saying "BD PROCHOT". After doing so, the CPU is scaling up to 2.5 Ghz, but still does not enter Turbo mode.
    The program has to be re-run after every boot to enable upscaling.
    The second issue is:
    I have bought a secondary hard drive bay, and the containing disk keeps spinning down after a few seconds of idle. (Yes, seconds!) The disk is working fine, does not have SMART errors and does not show this behaviour in another laptop and as an external USB drive.
    I disabled all power savings options again (Window, Power Manager, and Disk AAPM), which could cause such behaviour, but still no luck. The first hard drive is an SSD, therefore I can't tell, if this drive is also affected by that behaviour.
     UPDATE: After booting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I can verify that the behaviour is identical to Windows.
    Since both of these problems seem to be related to some part of the power management, I am wondering if there is some bug in the BIOS itself or maybe some faulty system driver.
    Any help on that would be appreciated, since normally working with the Thinkpad is rather annoying, considering the slow speed and the constant spin-up/down of the drive.

    Same here, the secondary hard drive is not seen in BIOS or in the BIOS boot menu.
    After booting Windows/Linux, the drive works fine.
     UPDATE: Even in good ol' DOS, the drive is seen. (I just booted DOS for a firmware update of an SSD drive, which was installed in the hard drive caddy.)
    Where did you get the BIOS v1.32? The latest on the Lenovo Website and in System Update is 1.20..
    Can you verify something for me too?
    On my L520, Turbo Mode does not work at all, how about yours?
    You can verify under Windows using hwinfo (http://www.hwinfo.com/ ).
     For Linux, there's http://code.google.com/p/i7z/ , but you'll have to compile it.

  • W530 Power Manager for Win 7 x64

    I just installed Power Manager for Win 7 x64 Version 6.64.4 on my new W530 and tried to set Battery Maintenance and there is no button to do so on the battery page.  Why isn't it there and what can I do to get it back?  I mostly use AC and want to maximize battery life.

    I think you might have to click "Advanced" on the main screen to get the battery maintenence option to appear.

  • X61 Power Manager + Access Communications trashed in latest updates

    My X61 has worked flawlessly for a year or so until the latest System Updates. Thinkpad Power Manager 2.36 will not display the main page when you try to open it anyway you like i.e. Fn+F3 or control panel links. It starts up on the task bar but can't be seen on the desktop and Energy Star Profile is not active although all the Vista OS profiles still work. Same deal with Access Connections 5.02. The utility simply won't load although Fn+F5 brings up the profiles. I am sure there must be others in the same predicament?

  • X200 Power Management Issue

    Hello Everyone,
    First time posting here in the Lenovo Community, hoping some of you can provide guidance.
    When we place any of these computers into Standby Mode, they will succesfully enter Standby.  The next time we try to enter standby mode, they will not enter, it will simply hang.  The only way we can successfully enter Standby again is if we reboot the machine.
    So, long story short, the laptop will only go into standby after a reboot. 
    We use System Center Configuration Manager to deploy our X200, T400 and W500 laptops.  We used to be running X61, T61 and T61p's, and never had this issue.  All drivers are up to date and we're running XP.
    Is there any trick to getting standby to run properly?  We have the Power management driver, Power Manager and the System interface driver installed.
    Any desktop deployment people have any luck with this?

  • X120E Multi Core Warning -The hardware is not functioning properly. What now?

    Ran the Thinkpad ThinkVantage Test and received a Warning on the CPU Multi-core test.
    The hardware is not functioning properly. To correct the problem:
    Turn off the system.
    Detach the power cord and wait for one minute.
    Re-attach the power cord and re-boot the system.
    Re-run the test.
    Performed the above, still receiving the warning.
    What next?

    Have you contacted Lenovo Support? The only thing I can think of is either a straight-up hardware defect or maybe cooling fan blockage of some sort. Could be the RAM, though it's unlikely. Still, if it consistently has this issue, and something like Prime95 errors out on one of the cores, you may need to RMA it.

    Power Manager version 3.65
    but the main problem is, it says battery is not installed...
    Everything are in original package.
    and i have a Energy Management installed and it recognize it on their...
    so how come i am having an issue with power manager?
    i had done the basic step measure, e.g. uninstall, reinstall...

    You "can" install the LTT programs, however you "should not" install the Power Manager feature, after the main programs intallation. Use the Energy Management on your 570.
